our lives, it's kind of associated with the term having a life mission. 00:07:56.079 --> 00:08:16.959 You know, this morning we're going to be talking about what we should be doing with our lives, not in the sense of what our profession is to be or where we should be living, but just what our lives should be invested in, what we should be giving our time and our attention and our energies and our efforts to as we live our lives. 00:08:18.959 --> 00:08:26.000 Now, literally speaking, the term true north is different than the term magnetic north. 00:08:27.439 --> 00:08:33.440 True north is a geographical direction that always remains the same. 00:08:34.080 --> 00:08:44.159 Magnetic north, on the other hand, is a point in the Arctic regions that's continually shifting location based upon the activity of the Earth's magnetic fields. 00:08:45.840 --> 00:09:00.799 Now, it is very possible for us to end up having our lives lived and influenced by forces around us so that, like magnetic north, they're pulled off from actually true north. 00:09:00.960 --> 00:09:09.279 And we can find ourselves when our lives are ended, having invested or given our lives to the wrong things. him say, Well done to us. 00:09:24.080 --> 00:09:34.080 But in order for that to happen, it is important that we have a clarity in our own mind on what it is that we should be doing with our lives. agree today that the Bible is true. 00:09:51.279 --> 00:09:56.080 And that all of the Bible, from beginning to end, is important. 00:09:58.240 --> 00:10:05.519 But I would like to suggest to you that not all of the Bible is equally important. 00:10:07.200 --> 00:10:18.559 And that the two passages we are going to look at this morning are some of the most important passages that there are in the Bible. 00:10:19.919 --> 00:10:31.600 And that in these two passages, in the first, that we often call the Great Commandment, we are going to find what true North is for our lives. 00:10:32.159 --> 00:10:41.440 And in the second, often referred to as the Great Commission, we are going to find how to live true North. 00:10:42.000 --> 00:10:44.080 The first will help us find it. 00:10:44.399 --> 00:10:47.759 The second will help us to live it. 00:10:48.399 --> 00:10:54.879 So if you have your Bibles open with me, let's turn to Matthew chapter 22. 00:10:57.360 --> 00:11:02.159 The book of Matthew is the first book in the New Testament. 00:11:02.720 --> 00:11:11.039 It is the record of Jesus' life and ministry, recorded by one of his disciples named Matthew. 00:11:11.440 --> 00:11:20.480 When we step into the 22nd chapter, we're stepping into this last week of Jesus' life that is spent in Jerusalem. 00:11:20.799 --> 00:11:30.159 He has traveled there, and Easter is not far in front of us, and the events that are taking place in here are often associated with the Easter season. 00:11:30.480 --> 00:11:36.080 Jesus has ridden into Jerusalem with the crowds shouting Hosanna around him. 00:11:36.320 --> 00:11:47.279 And now as that week is unfolding, he is finding himself in the city of Jerusalem and having significant conversation and discussion and debate with the religious leadership. 00:11:47.840 --> 00:12:01.360 They are increasingly hostile to him and uncomfortable with him because of his growing popularity and his willingness to be bold and open in pointing out their own hypocrisy. 00:12:01.919 --> 00:12:16.159 So they are looking for any and every opportunity they can have to somehow depreciate him in the eyes of the public and position him in some way that they can justify their criticism of him and even do away with him. 00:12:17.200 --> 00:12:20.000 This passage is set in that context. 00:12:20.320 --> 00:12:24.080 And we have Jesus being asked a question by a critic. 00:12:24.320 --> 00:12:29.840 And it's his answer to this critic's question that helps us to find true North. 00:12:30.480 --> 00:12:34.399 You may be very familiar with this passage, but let's read it once again. 00:12:34.639 --> 00:12:39.039 We're in Matthew chapter 22, and we're reading, beginning at verse 34. 00:12:40.399 --> 00:12:49.679 When the Pharisees heard that he, that is Jesus, had put the Sadducees to silence, they gathered themselves together, and one of them, a lawyer. 00:12:49.919 --> 00:13:01.120 That was a term referred to somebody that was very skilled and studied in the Old Testament law, particularly the first five books of the Old Testament written by Moses. 00:13:03.360 --> 00:13:06.799 This person, a lawyer, asked him a question testing him. 00:13:07.440 --> 00:13:11.919 Teacher, what is the great commandment in the law? 00:13:13.519 --> 00:13:29.279 Now, certainly this was a matter of discussion and debate among the religious leaders who specialized in all of the details and kind of just becoming a student of the scriptures, not necessarily practitioners of them. 00:13:30.320 --> 00:13:32.159 What is the Great Commandment? 00:13:32.399 --> 00:13:40.879 They had determined that there was, as we understand, 613 commands in those first five books, the law. 00:13:42.000 --> 00:13:43.519 613. 00:13:44.399 --> 00:13:47.519 So the question is, which one's the greatest? 00:13:47.759 --> 00:13:49.679 In some way, we would like to hear from you. 00:13:49.840 --> 00:13:55.360 This question is not being asked from a sincere person, asked a respectful rabbi. 00:13:55.519 --> 00:14:06.559 This question is being asked from the perspective we would like to get you to say something that we have the opportunity to criticize and hopefully corner you in such a way that we can depreciate what people think of you. 00:14:08.960 --> 00:14:11.039 What would you think Jesus would say? 00:14:12.639 --> 00:14:28.240 I admit that what first comes to my mind is that he probably would turn to these ten statements that God gave to Moses when he brought the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt and gathered them at this mountain called Sinai, where he met with them. 00:14:28.480 --> 00:14:37.279 He called Moses to meet with him on the top of that mountain, and he delivered to Moses these ten statements written on tablets of stone. 00:14:38.320 --> 00:14:43.919 And what I would think probably be the great commandment is the first one. 00:14:44.320 --> 00:14:48.320 You shall have no other gods before me. 00:14:50.879 --> 00:14:54.799 So I'm struck by the fact that that's not where he goes. 00:14:56.080 --> 00:15:12.240 In fact, he goes to the book of Deuteronomy, and this is a passage that comes out of the message that Moses is giving to the children of the generation that came out of Egypt, who were gathered around the mountain when Moses went up and received these tablets of stone. 00:15:13.519 --> 00:15:22.879 They wandered in the wilderness because of their disobedience and semi-obedience to God until they, that generation that was brought out of the land of Egypt, had all died. 00:15:23.120 --> 00:15:27.759 And now their children are the generation that God is going to take into the land of promise. 00:15:28.639 --> 00:15:34.480 And Moses is now reviewing for the children what it was that God had said to their parents. 00:15:34.960 --> 00:15:41.919 And in Deuteronomy chapter 6, verse 5, Moses goes to say, this is the Greek command. 00:15:42.080 --> 00:15:43.679 Well, it's not even one of the ten. 00:15:46.559 --> 00:15:48.399 But that's where he goes. 00:15:57.840 --> 00:15:59.360 And with all your mind. 00:16:00.559 --> 00:16:06.000 Now there is no question that for a Jewish person, that was a significant passage. 00:16:07.200 --> 00:16:17.840 It comes from the context where when Moses says, Hear, O Israel, the Lord your God is one, and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. 00:16:21.600 --> 00:16:31.200 You know, we are we are often finding ourselves being told and reminded that God loves us and he sent his son to die for us because he loves us. 00:16:32.000 --> 00:16:37.360 What is a good reminder is that God wants us to love him in return. 00:16:39.600 --> 00:16:41.759 As parents, we understand this. 00:16:44.080 --> 00:16:47.440 We love our kids, and we want what is best for them. 00:16:48.720 --> 00:17:00.879 But what really is fulfilling and just gives us that sense of satisfaction and delight and joy is to have our children love us back. 00:17:03.600 --> 00:17:07.279 And Jesus is saying, this is the great commandment. 00:17:08.640 --> 00:17:15.920 God Leviticus, a set of instructions for the priests, and instructions on how God would want the children of Israel simply to relate to and live together. 00:18:07.200 --> 00:18:09.599 Where are you getting this stuff? 00:18:10.799 --> 00:18:16.160 When we think about it, this really is, in essence, what the Ten Commandments are telling us. 00:18:16.720 --> 00:18:25.039 The first four talk to us about how we relate to God, know other gods before him, not take his name in vain, no idols honor the Sabbath day. 00:18:25.359 --> 00:18:34.400 The next six, all starting with honoring your father and mother and not lying and not committing murder and whatnot, all have to do with how we relate to one another. 00:18:35.440 --> 00:18:38.319 When we think about it, this is really impressive. --> 00:19:22.079 When I was in high school, I had a math teacher that I particularly enjoyed and appreciated. 00:19:23.519 --> 00:19:33.599 He had the ability to take these complex math concepts and done for us. 00:19:42.079 --> 00:19:49.039 And I would suggest to you that what he has done for us is told us what true North is for our lives. 00:19:49.839 --> 00:19:52.319 What does God want us to do with our lives? 00:19:52.640 --> 00:19:59.119 Why he wants us to love him supremely, and he wants us to love others as ourselves? 00:20:03.039 --> 00:20:07.759 Now I think you're sitting there saying, Well, I'm not sure you've really helped me. 00:20:08.880 --> 00:20:13.920 Because doesn't that sound a little bit kind of vague? 00:20:15.119 --> 00:20:21.119 Sure, I know that that's what it says, but how do I do it? 00:20:25.599 --> 00:20:32.880 Gary Chapman is a marriage and a family counselor that a number of years ago wrote a book called Five Love Languages. 00:20:34.000 --> 00:20:41.839 What Gary and his research had concluded is that there are primary ways that people communicate love to one another and also interpret and receive love. 00:20:42.400 --> 00:20:44.880 In other words, how do I know somebody is loving me? 00:20:45.119 --> 00:20:47.680 Because they are conveying love to me in this way. 00:20:48.000 --> 00:20:51.599 Very interesting that our oldest child is a daughter. 00:20:51.839 --> 00:20:54.079 We have four, and she is married. 00:20:54.240 --> 00:20:57.279 And in the early years of her marriage, it was very interesting. 00:20:57.359 --> 00:21:03.599 She spent a lot of time investing and doing special things for her husband when his birthday would come around and at Christmas time. 00:21:04.640 --> 00:21:12.640 But he didn't reciprocate by spending a lot of time and thinking about what to do and what gift to give and whatnot. 00:21:12.799 --> 00:21:20.000 And what they finally discovered is that our daughter's primary love language is giving gifts. 00:21:20.480 --> 00:21:24.960 And she was looking for her husband to do that in return for her. 00:21:26.240 --> 00:21:34.960 That wasn't his primary love language, so although he thought it was nice that she went to all this work and did all these things for her, he didn't do that in return for her. 00:21:35.519 --> 00:21:37.680 And it was frustrating for her. 00:21:38.079 --> 00:21:42.799 What Gary Chapman learned was that there's five primary love languages. 00:21:43.200 --> 00:21:52.960 And the first one is simply words of affirmation, communicating with second one is material gifts, and this is the idea of presenting somebody. 00:22:04.559 --> 00:22:09.519 This is a lot of what goes on at birthdays and Christmas time and that sort of thing. came up with was acts of service, doing things for somebody, communicating to them that they are important and that they are special. 00:22:32.960 --> 00:22:42.240 Another one that he came up with was physical touch, things like holding hands and embracing, that sort of thing, conveying to somebody that they are loved. 00:22:42.400 --> 00:22:46.400 Another one is simply quality time, being with He shared with him that closing and parting meal that you and I may have heard referred to as the Last Supper. 00:23:56.319 --> 00:24:06.079 And in the conversation that took place that evening and Israel's first king, Saul, was sent on a mission, and he was instructed by the prophet Samuel to go to the Amalekites, a very wicked people who had taken advantage of the children of Israel at a very when he came back, he was bringing all the spoils with him, and the prophet Samuel confronted him and said, What's all this stuff? 00:25:52.720 --> 00:25:57.599 And Saul said, Oh, well, we brought
