in the book of James, and we're going to pick up where we left off. 00:04:11.280 --> 00:04:19.360 It's not hard because on this passage, the last time we looked at it, we only, only got to the very first verse. 00:04:19.680 --> 00:04:22.959 And that wasn't because I got lost along the way. 00:04:23.199 --> 00:04:37.199 Uh that very first verse was incredibly significant for us and is the context for what we are looking at now, especially verses 3 through 12. 00:04:37.680 --> 00:04:46.720 So, verse 1, uh, James spoke very directly and pointedly, and James has a way of doing that. 00:04:49.279 --> 00:05:08.240 If you don't get a little uncomfortable with what James is saying, I don't, I'm not trying to make you uncomfortable, but if we're not a little taken aback by what God says to us through the scriptures, then there's a deeper problem. 00:05:09.040 --> 00:05:31.519 Um and last time the focus was really on me and others like me, um, who stand and have the audacity to open their mouths and say, My friends, this is what God has said, this is what it means, and and here's what I think we need to be doing with it. 00:05:32.399 --> 00:05:40.639 And James says, Walt, be careful, be careful, little mouth, what you say. 00:05:40.720 --> 00:05:48.879 And I I took that children's uh song, uh, little children's chorus, be careful, little mouth, what you say. 00:05:49.120 --> but what he is talking about is not a childish matter. 00:06:03.199 --> 00:06:11.680 And in the very first verse, he directs it to those who open God's word, and he says, there shouldn't be very many Jewish churches, the messianic churches, we would say today, that James was writing to. 00:06:39.439 --> 00:07:00.879 It was the most highly exalted position in that community, and it was what young boys aspired to, and the result was that there was a glut of would-be wannabe teachers of God's word who were neither spiritually mature nor rightly motivated, and he says, better fewer than many. begins to expand on that and moves from the rather narrow focus of the teacher of God's word, and parenthetically that applies not only to the preacher-teacher, it applies to the use of word gifts. 00:08:34.399 --> 00:08:44.879 Among the spiritual gifts, there are a number of what are called word gifts that have to do with speaking and exhortation and prophetic utterance and so forth. applicable to a Sunday school teacher, adult, or children, they're applicable to Iwana workers. 00:08:58.960 --> 00:09:14.639 They ought to be applicable to all of us, whether it's with our children or with our friends, as we have spiritual friendships, that we seek to have an influence for God in the lives of other people and to be influenced by God. 00:09:14.879 --> 00:09:17.039 And the word stands central in this. 00:09:17.200 --> 00:09:25.279 So that first verse applies in general to everyone, but specifically to the formal teacher. 00:09:25.519 --> 00:09:36.159 Now he begins to expand that in verse 2, where he says, For we all, and James is speaking himself, for we all stumble in many ways. 00:09:36.240 --> 00:09:43.279 If anyone does not stumble in what he says, he's a perfect miraculous thing that happens, where when the writers of Scripture were writing what ended up being Scripture, they may have had no idea what God was going to do with that writing or that 2,000 years later we'd still be focusing on and analyzing it and applying it to our lives. 00:12:48.320 --> 00:13:08.399 In those cases, in those situations after the fact, we realize God so superintended the process, so led, that the end result is not only the stumbling, fumbling words of James or of Paul or of Peter or of anyone, but are the very words of God. 00:13:08.639 --> 00:13:11.360 God protects cursing, contentious, sensual, and vile. 00:16:34.639 --> 00:16:48.559 And that's only a partial list of the way the scriptures describe this little flab of flesh, this little two-ounce muscle
