--> 00:06:36.639 I want to do a little quick foundation before we kind of jump into what we're talking about, but I want to look at one key verse right in the beginning of Acts. 00:06:36.800 --> 00:06:50.079 So if you take your Bibles, you probably many of you maybe know this verse, but in Acts chapter 1, verse 8, these are some of the last words of Jesus before his ascension to heaven. 00:06:50.480 --> 00:06:58.560 And it's an important verse because, in a sense, this verse is kind of the theme verse for the book of Acts. 00:06:58.720 --> 00:07:03.040 And it's also, in a sense, a theme verse for what we're talking about today. 00:07:03.360 --> 00:07:04.560 Acts 1.8. 00:07:04.879 --> 00:07:07.360 And this is, I'm just jumping right in the middle here. 00:07:07.439 --> 00:07:09.600 I'm not reading it all, but just this verse. 00:07:09.839 --> 00:07:12.079 But you shall receive power. 00:07:12.240 --> 00:07:27.040 Jesus is talking to the disciples, but you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you shall be my witnesses both in Jerusalem, and all Judea, in Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth. 00:07:27.279 --> 00:07:37.199 So what Jesus is telling his disciples here, they're supposed to wait until the power of the Holy Spirit comes, which happens in the next chapter when Pentecost comes. 00:07:37.600 --> 00:07:41.279 And then he says, You shall be my witnesses. 00:07:41.439 --> 00:07:44.079 Now, my translation says, my witnesses. 00:07:44.160 --> 00:07:47.439 It's not just you shall be witnesses, but he says, my witnesses. 00:07:47.680 --> 00:07:52.800 So we're supposed to go out and represent Jesus Christ as his witness. 00:07:53.439 --> 00:07:57.680 So he says, you shall be my witnesses, and then he tells us where to go. 00:07:57.920 --> 00:08:02.319 In Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the remotest part of the earth. 00:08:02.560 --> 00:08:11.199 So it's through power, it's through the Holy Spirit, it's being a witness for Jesus, and then he tells the geographical areas here. 00:08:11.360 --> 00:08:15.439 So that's kind of the foundation of what we're going to look at. 00:08:15.759 --> 00:08:26.879 Now, what I want to do just quickly today is what I believe is happening, actually happened in the first century. 00:08:27.120 --> 00:08:28.560 Think about this thought. 00:08:28.879 --> 00:08:34.639 I think God in all generations has a special work that He's doing. 00:08:34.799 --> 00:08:38.879 I think there's a special work that's happening in our world today. 00:08:39.039 --> 00:08:44.559 And I also think back in the first century, there was a special work that was happening back then. 00:08:44.799 --> 00:08:49.279 So we're going to look at one of these back then, and then we're going to talk about what's happening. 00:08:49.360 --> 00:08:54.159 Now we're kind of going to go from first century to now and first century to now. 00:08:54.320 --> 00:08:54.639 Okay? 00:08:54.879 --> 00:08:56.080 You're with me? 00:08:56.480 --> 00:09:09.360 So turn with me to Acts chapter 7, and we're going to read just the end of that here about the death of Stephen as he was being persecuted. 00:09:09.600 --> 00:09:11.600 So Acts chapter 7. 00:09:11.759 --> 00:09:14.159 We're just jumping in the story here again. 00:09:14.480 --> 00:09:20.080 Acts chapter 7, verse 59, and we'll read into the early part of chapter 8. 00:09:20.399 --> 00:09:22.000 Acts 7, 59. 00:09:22.159 --> 00:09:29.840 And they went on stoning Stephen as he called upon the Lord and said, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit. 00:09:30.080 --> 00:09:36.879 And falling on his knees, he cried out with a loud voice, Lord, do not hold the sin against them. 00:09:37.120 --> 00:09:39.919 And having said this, he fell asleep. 00:09:40.320 --> 00:09:44.879 And Saul was in hearty agreement with putting him to death. 00:09:46.320 --> 00:09:57.120 And on that day a great persecution arose against the church in Jerusalem, and they were all scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles. 00:09:57.360 --> 00:10:01.919 And some devout men buried Stephen and made loud lamentation over him. 00:10:02.159 --> 00:10:10.799 But Saul began ravaging the church, entering house after house, and dragging off men and women, he would put them in prison. 00:10:11.039 --> 00:10:15.519 And those who had been scattered went about preaching the word. 00:10:16.879 --> 00:10:36.960 So my contention is today that one of the great works of God in the first century, you wouldn't think of this happening as it were, but it was the persecution of Christians that brought about the expansion of the church. 00:10:38.000 --> 00:10:48.399 So when Stephen was being persecuted here, Saul was in hearty agreement, who later became the Apostle Paul. 00:10:48.639 --> 00:10:52.639 And we see that there was a great persecution arose against the church. 00:10:52.799 --> 00:11:00.799 They were in Jerusalem, and they were, it says here in this first verse, they were scattered throughout all the region of Judea and Samaria. 00:11:01.120 --> 00:11:08.879 Remember in Acts chapter 1, Jesus said, You shall be my witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. 00:11:09.120 --> 00:11:17.200 So here, the first part where they were in Jerusalem, that's where they were, the persecution brought them to Judea and Samaria. 00:11:18.080 --> 00:11:21.679 And it says, Saul began ravaging the church. 00:11:21.840 --> 00:11:27.440 So it wasn't just a quiet kind of persecution, but it was a radical persecution. 00:11:27.600 --> 00:11:31.360 He was ravaging the church, entering house after house. 00:11:31.440 --> 00:11:37.840 So he wasn't just going to where they were worshiping, but house after house, dragging off men and women, and he'd put them in prison. 00:11:38.000 --> 00:11:41.279 So I mean it was a difficult time for these believers. 00:11:41.519 --> 00:11:43.200 And then look what they did again. 00:11:43.360 --> 00:11:46.159 Those who had been scattered went about preaching the word. 00:11:46.480 --> 00:11:52.559 So they weren't just in Jerusalem anymore, but they were scattered now because of the persecution, and they were preaching the word. 00:11:53.039 --> 00:11:54.399 Keep that thought in mind. 00:11:54.559 --> 00:12:00.159 Now turn over to Acts chapter 11, and we're going to see what happens next. 00:12:01.120 --> 00:12:03.919 It's just such an interesting story. 00:12:04.399 --> 00:12:08.240 Acts chapter 11, verse 19. 00:12:09.279 --> 00:12:10.720 Acts 11, 19. 00:12:10.879 --> 00:12:23.440 So then those who were scattered because of the persecution that arose in connection with Stephen made their way to Phoenicia and Cyprus and Antioch, speaking the word to no one except to Jews alone. 00:12:23.600 --> 00:12:34.240 But there were some of them, men of Cyprus and Cyrene, who came to Antioch and been speaking to Greeks also, preaching the Lord Jesus. 00:12:34.639 --> 00:12:40.799 So what you have here, you've got people who are going out because of the persecution. 00:12:40.960 --> 00:12:52.320 Some are going just talking to the Jewish people, and then you've got others here who are actually coming to the city of Antioch, and now they're speaking to Greeks who are not, again, non-Jewish people. 00:12:52.480 --> 00:12:53.679 And what are they doing? 00:12:54.320 --> 00:12:57.279 They're preaching the Lord Jesus Christ. 00:13:02.159 --> 00:13:06.559 Well, this whole thing is orchestrated by God. 00:13:06.879 --> 00:13:17.039 We don't think about that with persecution, but it's orchestrated by God for people to go out, they were preaching the word, they were preaching the Lord Jesus, and they're going. 00:13:17.840 --> 00:13:21.600 Well, that's what I think happened in the first century. 00:13:23.919 --> 00:13:31.519 I want to talk just a little bit here about what's happening today with persecution. 00:13:31.600 --> 00:13:35.519 This is kind of a side note, but we need to talk about it. 00:13:35.840 --> 00:13:46.240 With the area of persecution of Christians, last year they're estimated that there were 90,000 Christians around the world that were killed for their faith. 00:13:46.480 --> 00:13:54.639 People are saying that's one every five or six minutes a believer is killed around the world for their faith. 00:13:54.960 --> 00:14:01.440 More Christians are being killed than any other major religion in the world today. 00:14:01.919 --> 00:14:03.600 So why is that important? 00:14:04.000 --> 00:14:13.360 Well, I think we should be praying for believers who are facing persecution for them to be strong and in their witness. 00:14:13.519 --> 00:14:20.320 We should be praying for the persecutors, like Saul, who later became Apostle Paul. 00:14:20.639 --> 00:14:24.799 Pray that persecutors as well would come to know Christ. 00:14:24.960 --> 00:14:28.240 That's what I want to tell you about today is what about the work of God today? 00:14:41.120 --> 00:14:52.399 The first century that was that persecution that drove the Christians out, and they went to from Jerusalem to Gea, Judea, Samaria, and then to the Greeks there in Antioch. 00:14:52.960 --> 00:14:54.240 But what about today? 00:14:54.399 --> 00:14:56.000 What's going on today? 00:14:56.320 --> Many Muslims and Christians are coming out of Middle East conflicts in Iraq and Syria, for instance. 00:15:24.159 --> 00:15:29.919 They're going to moderate Muslim countries like Jordan and Lebanon. 00:15:30.320 --> 00:15:33.919 Many hundreds of thousands of them are going to Europe. 00:15:34.960 --> 00:15:52.159 Kathy and I had a team the other year to Berlin, and we were there in Berlin, and we saw literally hundreds of people that every day they go out seven in the morning to seven o'clock at night, and they're waiting for their number to be called, to be approved, to come in. 00:15:52.320 --> 00:15:54.480 But they just stand there and they wait. 00:15:54.720 --> 00:15:58.320 One guy we had visited with, he'd been waiting a whole month. 00:15:58.480 --> 00:16:04.240 He just comes and every day and he's waiting for his number to come before he can be interviewed and approved. 00:16:04.399 --> 00:16:09.120 I mean, they're just coming, thousands and hundreds of thousands of them. Germany, in Berlin last year, there were 1,200 Muslims who believed in Jesus Christ and were baptized in a church. 00:16:33.200 --> 00:16:34.399 1,200. 00:16:35.679 --> 00:16:40.639 And they were from Afghanistan and Iran. 00:16:41.200 --> 00:16:50.799 In Hamburg, there were 900 Pakistanis and Afghanistans coming to faith in Christ. 00:16:50.960 --> 00:16:56.080 Not just only believing, but also being baptized. 00:16:56.320 --> 00:17:02.240 In refugee camps, churches are starting up and people are coming to Christ. 00:17:02.480 --> 00:17:13.920 In Lebanon, there's an evangelical free church in Beirut that's ministering to refugees and also has a global fingerprints program, and they're seeing people come to Christ. 00:17:14.400 --> 00:17:19.119 There's thousands of Muslims who are coming number of Muslims who had come to Christ already in an eight-year period. 00:17:32.000 --> 00:17:39.759 And then afterward they said, maybe we shouldn't have told you that number, because if that believers or more, and they're saying this, they're doing this within a 20-year window frame, but there's 69 movements of when David Garrison was writing this book that has never happened in the Lord means, if it's just being quiet, if they were singing, if they were praying. 00:32:00.400 --> 00:32:03.759 I'm not sure, but they were whatever it was, they were ministering to the Lord. 00:32:03.920 --> 00:32:12.720 They were seeking God first, and they were fasting, so they were skipping some time of eating, but to seek the Lord and to worship him. 00:32:13.039 --> 00:32:22.079 It doesn't say that they were asking for anything, and they might have been, but it says they were ministering to the Lord, and when they were doing this, the Holy Spirit came. 00:32:22.400 --> 00:32:36.400 Now, I don't know if he spoke audibly or just they heard it in their minds, but they knew that the Holy Spirit was calling them to something special, and that was to send two of their five leaders out to be missionaries, Barnabas and Saul. 00:32:36.559 --> 00:32:41.759 And they ended up going out a few verses later, which now became the first missionary journey. 00:32:41.920 -->
