00:01:09.359 You have heard me speak before of William Cooper. 00:01:10.719 --> 00:01:24.640 A friend of John Newton, William Cooper struggled with severe depression, and at times he was overcome by something perhaps more akin to schizophrenia. 00:01:24.959 --> 00:01:30.079 He was even committed to a mental institution at one time because it was believed that he was insane. 00:01:31.200 --> 00:01:36.319 But that commitment to a mental institution was God's grace. 00:01:36.640 --> 00:01:49.599 Because it was there in that mental institution that the Lord's grace grabbed hold of William, and from then on Christ never let go, no matter how much Cooper struggled. 00:01:50.159 --> 00:01:56.959 Now William was a poet, and the Lord used him to write many, many hymns, some of which we still sing today. 00:01:57.280 --> 00:02:06.400 One of those hymns that we don't sing, although it's being brought back a little bit, is a song entitled God Moves in Mysterious Ways. 00:02:06.640 --> first song to be the fruit of insanity. 00:04:08.240 --> 00:04:20.480 Sometime around 1000 BC, God used another poet to work to give us a song born out of trial and we might even say out of insanity. that later on we'll be able to better understand how Peter uses it and what God expects us to get from it. 00:08:13.439 --> 00:08:27.360 So I'd like us to look together at Psalm 34, but to do that, we have to go back further towards the beginning of our Bibles with an account that is recorded in 1 Samuel chapter 17. 00:08:27.759 --> 00:08:32.960 Now I'm sure that you are very familiar with this account. 00:08:33.600 --> 00:08:46.960 1 Samuel chapter 17 is the true story of a one-sided battle between a young man named David and a giant named Goliath, thank you. 00:08:47.200 --> 00:08:50.240 A young child answered that question for me in the first service. 00:08:50.399 --> 00:08:52.559 No adult could, but a young child did. 00:08:55.039 --> 00:09:04.000 Now the Holy Spirit ensured that certain details are recorded for us in the pages of Scripture. 00:09:04.240 --> 00:09:09.360 And it's important for us as we put pieces of Scripture together to catch those details. 00:09:09.440 --> 00:09:14.159 And one of those details is here in 1 Samuel 17 and verse 4. 00:09:14.480 --> 00:09:25.440 It says, There came out from the camp of the Philistines a champion named Goliath of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span. 00:09:26.320 --> 00:09:29.279 Now you know the rest of the story. 00:09:30.000 --> 00:09:40.399 David, the youngest child in his family, was at home keeping the flocks and the herds that belonged to his family, while his older brothers were sent off to war. 00:09:40.960 --> 00:09:47.039 At one point, their father sent David to the front lines with some food for his brothers and to bring back some news. 00:09:47.600 --> 00:10:09.759 But that just happened to be the time of a standoff between the armies of Israel and the armies of the Philistines, with Goliath himself coming out day after day, challenging the armies of the living God, saying, Send out one person, one person to fight me, just us, the two of us, standing out in the battlefield. 00:10:09.919 --> 00:10:11.440 Let's see who wins. 00:10:13.120 --> 00:10:23.679 Israel sent no one until David saw that challenge as not a challenge of armies, but a challenge to the God of Israel. 00:10:23.919 --> 00:10:39.120 And so David, young David, went out to meet Goliath on the battlefield, doing so armed only with a shepherd's staff, a sling, and five pieces of ammunition, stones from a brook. 00:10:39.759 --> 00:10:44.240 And so we come to first Samuel seventeen, verse fifty. 00:10:45.840 --> 00:10:53.200 So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and he struck the Philistine and killed him. 00:10:53.519 --> 00:11:02.639 There was no sword in the hand of David, and so David ran and stood over the Philistine, and took his sword and drew it out of its sheath, and killed him, and cut off his head with it. 00:11:02.960 --> 00:11:06.480 When the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they fled. 00:11:06.960 --> 00:11:20.720 And the men of Israel and Judah rose with a shout and pursued the Philistines as far as Gath and the gates of Ekron, so that the wounded Philistines fell on the way from Sha'a'rim as far as Gath and Ekron. 00:11:21.759 --> 00:11:25.039 Of course that made young David a celebrity. 00:11:25.360 --> 00:11:29.759 And after that point Saul, Israel's king, grew jealous of David. 00:11:29.919 --> 00:11:46.559 And so we see in the next chapter, chapter 18, verse 6, as they were coming home, when David returned from striking down the Philistine, the women came out from all the cities of Israel singing and dancing to meet King Saul, with tambourines, with songs of joy, and with musical instruments. 00:11:46.799 --> 00:11:53.679 The women sang to one another as they celebrated, Saul has struck down his thousands, and David his ten thousands. 00:11:54.480 --> 00:12:03.519 And Saul was very angry, and this displeased him, and he said, They have ascribed to David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed thousands. 00:12:03.840 --> 00:12:05.919 What more can he have but the kingdom? 00:12:06.159 --> 00:12:10.559 And Saul eyed David from that day on. 00:12:15.679 --> 00:12:17.360 What happens from here? 00:12:19.039 --> 00:12:24.000 Over the course of the next few years, Saul sought to kill David. 00:12:24.320 --> 00:12:32.799 He used various means and various methods to try to take young David's life, and David was constantly on the run. 00:12:32.960 --> 00:12:37.840 At one point, David was on the run from King Saul, and he went to a small community called Nob. 00:12:38.159 --> 00:12:41.440 At Nob there was a little sanctuary there, and there was a priest. 00:12:41.919 --> 00:12:46.799 And he got some food from the priest, but something else happened there. 00:12:48.480 --> 00:12:58.559 In chapter 21, we begin to see that that happened to be the place where for one reason or another Goliath's sword was stored. 00:12:58.960 --> 00:13:02.000 The priest there had watch over Goliath's sword. 00:13:02.080 --> 00:13:04.639 We don't know why, we're not told the details around that. 00:13:04.879 --> 00:13:13.200 But David was on the run, and so he got some food, some bread from the priest, and he also took with him David, I'm sorry, Goliath's sword. 00:13:13.679 --> 00:13:15.759 Now I'd like you to look with me. 00:13:16.000 --> 00:13:18.879 That's 1 Samuel 21, verse 10. 00:13:21.200 --> 00:13:31.600 And David rose and fled that day from Saul and went to Akish, the king of Gath. 00:13:33.600 --> 00:13:35.360 Where had Goliath been from? 00:13:37.519 --> 00:13:38.080 You got it. 00:13:38.639 --> 00:13:39.039 Gath. 00:13:40.559 --> 00:13:48.240 David fled from his own king to Goliath's hometown, carrying Goliath's sword. 00:13:48.720 --> 00:13:50.879 Now you remember Goliath the giant, right? 00:13:51.120 --> 00:13:53.039 He also had a giant sword. 00:13:53.279 --> 00:13:57.440 Everywhere he went, people would know whose sword that was. 00:13:58.960 --> 00:14:01.120 And so he went to Goliath's hometown. 00:14:01.279 --> 00:14:05.840 And it seems as though the people of Gath took David captive. 00:14:06.000 --> 00:14:07.039 Look at verse 11. 00:14:07.200 --> 00:14:11.600 And the servants of Akish said to him, Is not this David the king of the land? 00:14:11.759 --> 00:14:14.399 Did they not sing to one another of him in dances? 00:14:14.559 --> 00:14:17.600 Saul has struck down his thousands, and David his ten thousands. 00:14:17.679 --> 00:14:18.799 They've been listening. 00:14:19.039 --> 00:14:20.720 They've been paying attention. 00:14:21.759 --> 00:14:26.639 And David took these words to heart and was much afraid of Akish the king of Gath. 00:14:27.279 --> 00:14:36.960 So he changed his behavior before them, and pretended to be insane in their hands, and made marks on the doors of the gate, and let his spittle run down his beard. 00:14:37.360 --> 00:14:41.840 Then Akish said to his servants, Behold, you see and was taken captive. 00:15:10.000 --> 00:15:18.159 Evidently they were not going to kill him, so David did everything he could to make them not want him around. 00:15:18.720 --> 00:15:21.840 So he acted as though he were insane. 00:15:23.679 --> 00:15:29.120 And then we read David departed from there and escaped to the cave of Adulum. 00:15:32.240 --> 00:15:37.600 Running from his own king, he 00:16:04.960 This is how David felt and thought in the midst of that desperate time. 00:16:06.320 --> 00:16:15.200 That setting is important because it helps us understand how we, as the children of God, ought to react to times of desperation. 00:16:16.960 --> 00:16:22.320 Did David believe that his ingenuity saved him, rescued him? 00:16:22.960 --> 00:16:25.200 What are we to learn from David's experience? 00:16:25.440 --> 00:16:28.320 How are we to apply this to our own lives? 00:16:29.360 --> 00:16:38.320 Well, William Cooper said in poetic ways, fearful saints, fresh courage take, and trust him for his grace. 00:16:38.559 --> 00:16:43.279 But David said, Trust in the care of your God. 00:16:44.080 --> 00:16:46.159 Trust in the care of your God. 00:16:48.000 --> 00:16:52.720 He then shows us in this chapter, verse chapter 34, how to do that. 00:16:53.039 --> 00:17:05.200 How the child of God, the desperate, the depressed, the anxious, the worried, the troubled, even the exiled our God is weak and not worthy to be trusted, or that he is strong and mighty, good and gracious, worthy of all of our trust and all of our praise, but it is only a humble heart that can make God
