know, the same is true in God's family. 00:07:01.680 --> 00:07:11.120 Sometimes there are Christians who have walked with Jesus for two or three years in their faith, who are really mature. 00:07:12.959 --> 00:07:18.240 But we're not surprised if somebody's been following Christ for six months or a year or two or three years. 00:07:18.480 --> 00:07:21.439 We're not surprised if they still have some growing up to do. 00:07:22.000 --> 00:07:23.920 There's still room to mature. 00:07:25.600 --> 00:07:41.040 But if there are people who have been children of God for ten years, for twenty years, for thirty years, then we should be surprised and even concerned if they still act like two-year-old Christians, shouldn't we? 00:07:44.319 --> 00:07:48.399 My brothers and sisters, God expects us to grow up. 00:07:51.040 --> 00:08:00.480 We don't trust in Jesus, get baptized, join a church, and then suddenly just stop growing. 00:08:01.040 --> 00:08:04.560 That's not what Jesus intended. 00:08:04.879 --> 00:08:12.240 In fact, in a statement to the ancient church in Ephesus, God repeatedly reminded them that he expected them to grow up. 00:08:12.399 --> 00:08:16.160 We see this at the end of this section that we began to read this morning. 00:08:16.399 --> 00:08:24.240 If you have your Bible still open, you can look at verses 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 at the end of that first major section. 00:08:24.480 --> 00:08:30.480 And in those last verses, there are five statements about growing up as Christians. 00:08:31.120 --> 00:08:37.840 He says that we're to grow to maturity, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ. 00:08:38.240 --> 00:08:43.600 He tells us to no longer be children, to grow up in every way. 00:08:44.639 --> 00:08:48.639 He talks about making the body, that's all of us together, grow. 00:08:50.960 --> 00:08:53.519 We are to be about growing up. 00:08:53.759 --> 00:09:01.519 Now, for a few minutes, I just want to take a short time here to survey the beginning of this chapter, the first six verses. 00:09:01.840 --> 00:09:05.120 In a few weeks we'll pick it up again in a little more detail. 00:09:06.240 --> 00:09:09.039 But first we have to understand where we are. 00:09:10.000 --> 00:09:20.480 Perhaps more than any other part of the Bible, the first three chapters of the book of Ephesians lay out what it means to be a Christian. 00:09:20.720 --> 00:09:27.840 There's some rich, deep stuff there that you can dwell on for a lifetime. 00:09:29.200 --> 00:09:38.240 Beginning in the fourth chapter, we find not what it means to be a Christian, but what it looks like to be a Christian. 00:09:38.639 --> 00:09:42.559 And these first 16 verses of this chapter are all about growing. 00:09:43.360 --> 00:09:45.840 We could simplify it maybe in this way. 00:09:46.799 --> 00:09:51.519 The first six verses are about growing together. 00:09:51.840 --> 00:09:53.279 They're about growing together. 00:09:53.440 --> middle section is about growing in faith. 00:10:06.480 --> 00:10:10.720 The last part of these first 16 verses is about growing in service. 00:10:11.200 --> 00:10:17.279 And we could say then that the last part of the chapter, verses 17 to the end, are about growing in character. 00:10:17.759 --> 00:10:19.759 It's all about growing. 00:10:20.320 --> 00:10:24.480 But that first section is growing together. 00:10:25.759 --> 00:10:30.960 Very clear about the themes of unity and togetherness and oneness. 00:10:31.200 --> 00:10:34.399 But we miss quite a bit if we jump right to that point. 00:10:47.519 I, therefore, a prisoner of the Lord. 00:10:47.759 --> 00:10:56.559 Now we have to pause there because whenever we see the word therefore in Scripture, we need to stop a minute and see arrows painted on billboards, usually in a right angle, pointing down so you could locate where the campground was that we were looking for. 00:11:32.960 --> 00:11:36.559 That's what the word therefore does in your Bible. 00:11:36.960 --> 00:11:41.600 Now here it serves as a transition to the next part of the book. 00:11:41.679 --> 00:11:45.840 So the first part tells us what it means to be a Christian, the second part what it looks like. 00:11:46.000 --> 00:11:54.720 So he wants us to begin thinking about what it looks like to be a Christian, but to do that, he's got this gigantic arrow pointing back to the first three chapters. 00:11:55.279 --> 00:12:02.799 Because of what it means to be a Christian, this is what it looks like to live it out. 00:12:03.840 --> 00:12:10.480 That big arrow points back to the first three chapters, telling us what God has done. 00:12:11.279 --> 00:12:30.960 If you look back at chapter 3, verse 18, he tells us that we should have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and the length and the height and the depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that we may be filled with all the fullness understand the salvation, I now urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the gospel. 00:12:58.799 --> 00:13:16.639 The gospel is so glorious, he says, that it empowers, it enables, it motivates the believer in Jesus to live in such a way that his life demonstrates the beauty of the gospel. 00:13:18.240 --> 00:13:50.399 To put it another way, if you have no desire to be baptized, if you have no desire to have humility in your life, if there's no desire to be gentle, to have patience, to put up with other people, if loving unity is not a part of who you are, then you either don't have the 00:14:11.360 --> 00:14:16.399 He was held as a prisoner because of his faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. 00:14:17.519 --> 00:14:22.159 He was turning the world upside down with the gospel. 00:14:22.720 --> 00:14:24.320 So he was in prison. 00:14:26.080 --> 00:14:35.679 But I can't help but think in this context that maybe there's a little bit more to that statement than just being a literal bound prisoner. 00:14:38.000 --> 00:14:44.159 I think what he's communicating here is that he was a prisoner because of the gospel. 00:14:44.960 --> 00:14:47.279 He was a prisoner because of Jesus. adopted in Christ, and on the other side of the teeter-tater or the other side of the scale is our lifestyle, our way of living, our attitudes, our actions that are growing in maturity. 00:19:14.400 maybe even required, for someone in a position of authority. 00:19:58.799 --> 00:20:08.880 We've often heard throughout the years how Congress has turned down presidential nominees when certain to be fostered or developed, it was something to be gotten rid of. 00:22:52.640 --> 00:22:59.759 But in God's mind, it is of greatest importance in the life of the believer because it is the prime because Jesus and the gospel are worth it, then the Spirit of God begins to work in us, displaying his character through us. 00:23:49.920 --> 00:23:55.920 As children grow and mature, they develop a seminar or a conference on learning to be humble. 00:24:51.119 --> 00:24:55.039 The world doesn't teach gentleness, but it does teach assertiveness. 00:24:57.920 --> 00:25:06.960 And all of that,
