00:06:24.240 One of the most astonishing acts of God recorded in Scripture occurred during an act of worship. 00:06:24.480 --> 00:06:26.399 During an act of worship. 00:06:26.959 --> 00:06:38.000 Much of the Old Testament book of Exodus details the layout and the construction of the tabernacle, sort of a tent-like traveling temple. 00:06:39.199 --> 00:06:52.160 The next book, Leviticus, begins to lay out all of the requirements for worshiping God at that tabernacle, all of the purification rites, all of the rules and regulations for offerings and sacrifices. 00:06:52.720 --> 00:06:59.040 God was preparing his people to come together and worship them at this tabernacle. 00:06:59.920 --> 00:07:10.319 And then finally, God took Moses' brother Aaron and his four sons and set them apart as priests. 00:07:11.600 --> 00:07:22.480 They offered a sacrifice that was intended to atone for their own sins so that they would be purified to serve as mediators between God and the people. 00:07:24.000 --> 00:07:27.759 That is how the ninth chapter of the book of Leviticus ends. 00:07:28.560 --> 00:07:31.120 It's a great and awesome part of Scripture. 00:07:31.199 --> 00:07:43.600 It's a great and magnificent moment, as everything is now ready in the life of Israel for Israel to meet their God at the temple, to come and gather together and to worship him. 00:07:44.399 --> 00:07:47.680 It's a wonderful, wonderful position in which to be. 00:07:49.120 --> 00:07:53.759 And then we read in Leviticus chapter ten these words. 00:07:54.399 --> 00:08:09.199 Now Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, each took his censor and put fire in it, and laid incense on it, and offered strange fire before Yahweh, which he had not commanded them. 00:08:10.399 --> 00:08:13.920 Now pause and process that statement for just a moment. 00:08:15.199 --> 00:08:27.759 Two of the four sons of the newly ordained high priest of Israel are present and excited and ready to serve God and to worship him with all of their people. 00:08:28.240 --> 00:08:30.800 They're enthusiastic about doing that. 00:08:31.040 --> 00:08:36.960 Just as I trust all of us were enthusiastic to come and worship our God together this morning. 00:08:38.159 --> 00:08:44.240 So they grab some religious implements and they proceed to do just that. 00:08:44.399 --> 00:08:45.600 But there are two problems. 00:08:45.840 --> 00:08:49.360 First, they offered strange fire, it says. 00:08:49.840 --> 00:08:56.720 And that strange fire leads to the second problem that was not commanded by God as something that they should do. 00:08:57.440 --> 00:09:01.120 Taken together, those two issues tell a clear story. 00:09:01.440 --> 00:09:07.039 These two newly minted priests did things their own way. 00:09:08.559 --> 00:09:18.639 They decided that they had the right and the authority, the training and the knowledge to worship God the way they desired to worship. 00:09:19.440 --> 00:09:22.080 God had never authorized what they did. 00:09:22.399 --> 00:09:28.480 He never approved of it, and so it was considered strange, out of the ordinary, not normal. 00:09:29.279 --> 00:09:37.120 Now, today, today Nadab and Abihu would be lauded as trailbreakers in the ways of worship. 00:09:37.600 --> 00:09:41.679 They would be the headliners at the creative worship conferences. 00:09:43.840 --> 00:09:46.240 But then comes the astonishment. 00:09:46.720 --> 00:09:53.360 In the very next verse, it says, And fire came out from before Yahweh and consumed them. 00:09:54.000 --> 00:09:56.559 And they died before Yahweh. 00:09:58.559 --> 00:10:05.200 However, we might react to that, and I'm sure there are various ways, one thing is clear. 00:10:05.519 --> 00:10:11.759 From that passage, we know God cares about how his people worship. 00:10:12.960 --> 00:10:17.759 Nadab and Abihu ignored God's prescriptions for worship. 00:10:18.000 --> 00:10:31.519 And so Moses went on to explain in that chapter that Yahweh said, Among those who are near me I will be sanctified, I will be set apart, and before all of the people I will be glorified. 00:10:32.960 --> 00:10:38.320 You see, Aaron and his sons were to be the standard bearers of God's holiness. 00:10:38.480 --> 00:10:46.799 They were to display before all of the people that God is holy, that he is set apart, he is distinct, he is different. 00:10:48.159 --> 00:10:53.919 Instead, they turned worship into something common, not holy. 00:10:55.120 --> 00:10:57.120 And God took their lives. 00:10:58.879 --> 00:11:04.639 It should not surprise us to hear that things were not much different 650 years later. 00:11:05.279 --> 00:11:14.000 The pattern of ignoring what God had said, what God had prescribed, and worshiping however one wanted was the rule of the day. 00:11:14.159 --> 00:11:18.240 And in response, Amos proclaims to them three woes. 00:11:19.200 --> 00:11:27.759 Now that's kind of an ancient way of saying what we would say today as watch out and not in a good way. 00:11:28.879 --> 00:11:32.480 God is coming and he's not happy. 00:11:33.120 --> 00:11:36.480 You've heard the phrase, Mama is not happy, then nobody's happy? 00:11:36.879 --> 00:11:40.480 Well, take that a hundred times more. 00:11:40.799 --> 00:11:43.120 God's coming, he's not pleased. 00:11:45.039 --> 00:11:51.759 I'd like you to look with me at chapter 5, verses 18 through 27, as we really get into what's going on here. 00:11:52.000 --> 00:11:57.679 Here we see the detailed pattern of worship that Israel had come to accept as normal. 00:11:59.759 --> 00:12:05.600 In verses 18 through 20, we see that the people are theologically confused. 00:12:06.559 --> 00:12:11.919 And then in verses 21 to 24, we see their patterns of worship condemned. 00:12:12.080 --> 00:12:18.480 So let's look back at verses 18 through 20 first at being confused about the day of the Lord. 00:12:18.879 --> 00:12:22.799 They really, really wanted this day of the Lord to come. 00:12:22.879 --> 00:12:25.120 Now we're not told what they thought about it. 00:12:25.360 --> 00:12:31.919 We're not told how they viewed it, except that they were excited about it and they wanted it here now. 00:12:33.519 --> 00:12:41.679 Typically, in ancient Israel, the day of the Lord was viewed as a time of God's victory over all of his enemies. 00:12:42.559 --> 00:12:47.759 That was good news for Israel because Israel thought, hey, God's enemies are our enemies. 00:12:48.000 --> 00:12:52.799 Our enemies are God's enemies, so if God is coming in victory, that's good news for us. 00:12:53.200 --> 00:12:56.080 Our enemies are going to be abolished, they're going to be gone. 00:12:56.320 --> 00:13:01.759 Why would anyone not want God to come in crushing victory over his enemies? 00:13:03.840 --> 00:13:07.039 We're told that they longed for this day. 00:13:14.559 --> 00:13:16.559 Of Israel wandering in the desert. 00:13:16.720 --> 00:13:18.080 You remember this story, I'm sure. 00:13:18.159 --> 00:13:21.919 They were wandering in the desert and they were craving what they had left behind in Egypt. 00:13:22.080 --> 00:13:23.759 They were craving meat. 00:13:25.120 --> 00:13:28.960 They wanted good, solid meat to sink their teeth into. 00:13:29.919 --> 00:13:33.279 Of course, that wasn't a good thing because they weren't trusting God. 00:13:34.399 --> 00:13:42.320 Same word is used in 2 Samuel 23 of someone who is so thirsty that even a drop of water would be refreshing. 00:13:43.039 --> 00:13:45.039 They craved a drink of water. 00:13:45.679 --> 00:13:52.879 Solomon says in Proverbs 21, verses 25 and 26, the desire of the sluggard kills him. 00:13:53.039 --> 00:13:55.919 All day long he craves and craves. 00:13:56.080 --> 00:14:01.200 This word is so intense that it is connected to the idea of coveting. 00:14:01.759 --> 00:14:06.399 Israel is coveting the day of the Lord. 00:14:07.600 --> 00:14:12.559 Sadly, they had become overzealous about a good thing. 00:14:13.519 --> 00:14:15.519 That never happens to us, right? 00:14:16.799 --> 00:14:20.639 Some of us might become a little overzealous about pie this evening. 00:14:21.600 --> 00:14:23.600 That might not be a good thing. 00:14:24.159 --> 00:14:28.720 Few days at Thanksgiving, we might be a little overzealous about all the good food that's put in front of us. 00:14:28.799 --> 00:14:31.360 That's not, you get what I'm saying, right? 00:14:33.279 --> 00:14:37.440 Now we think of the day of the Lord as the end times. 00:14:38.080 --> 00:14:46.000 Israel probably wouldn't have thought that way so much as the day of the Lord being the time when they could get a leg up on their enemies. 00:14:46.960 --> 00:14:48.879 When they would be the ones in control. 00:14:49.120 --> 00:14:53.360 So if God were to help them along in that way, it would be even better. 00:14:55.120 --> 00:15:01.200 Wanting God to fulfill his plan is a good thing. 00:15:01.919 --> 00:15:06.559 Wanting God to carry out what he has promised to do is a good thing. 00:15:07.120 --> 00:15:10.639 But Israel was confused about what that good thing was. 00:15:10.960 --> 00:15:15.200 And as a that overemphasis on the blessings of God, they move into the false doctrines of a prosperity gospel. 00:15:38.879 --> 00:15:46.720 Some today overemphasize the work of the Holy Spirit and become off-center in their beliefs about the work of the Spirit. 00:15:47.039 --> 00:15:53.360 Israel was driven to desire a twisted form of the day of the Lord. 00:15:54.559 --> 00:15:57.120 Watch out, Amos because a lion has come out of nowhere and is chasing you. 00:16:20.720 --> 00:16:29.840 You are fleeing with all of your might away from the lion, and as you're running away from the lion, you only come face to face with a 700-pound grizzly bear. 00:16:30.879 --> 00:16:32.639 Is that really what you want? 00:16:34.879 --> 00:16:39.600 Or after a long, hard day, all you want to do is go home and relax. 00:16:40.320 --> 00:16:42.080 The couch is calling. 00:16:43.600 --> 00:16:52.720 So you go home and you just stretch out on the couch, and then seconds later you shriek because a snake has slithered out from beside the cushions and has bitten you on the hand. 00:16:54.240 --> 00:16:55.600 Is that really what you want? 00:16:59.120 --> 00:17:06.640 Is not the day of Yahweh darkness and not light and gloom with no brightness in it? 00:17:10.000 --> 00:17:18.400 Watch out, friends, lest your enthusiasm over a particular doctrine or practice lead you to a warped view of God's word. 00:17:20.480 --> 00:17:31.119 We don't know exactly when the prophet Joel wrote, but he said in Joel chapter two, the day of Yahweh is a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and thick darkness. 00:17:31.359 --> 00:17:40.960 He describes an army, like blackness there is spread upon the mountains a great and powerful people, their like has never been before, nor will be again after them. 00:17:41.359 --> 00:17:54.799 Speaking of the Assyrian army, and yet Israel sat comfortably in place, with no fear of what was going on around them, feeling quite secure in their twisted theology. melodies of their worship songs have become nothing but noise to the sovereign God. 00:18:41.119 --> 00:18:43.759 And don't just don't just glance at those verbs. 00:18:43.839 --> 00:18:45.839 Don't Doug Stewart has written, like the student who received an F for a paper he thought was brilliant, or the employee fired after doing what he thought was excellent work, or the person whose spouse suddenly announces that he or she wants a divorce when the marriage seems to be going so well, the Israelites were undoubtedly stunned at such a reversal of their expectations. 00:19:46.799 --> 00:19:48.079 Astonishing. 00:19:58.480 --> 00:20:05.920 Back in Amos chapter 2, Amos shined a light on the hearts of God's people, describing what they were doing. 00:20:06.160 --> 00:20:11.839 Amos said, You trample on the poor, you crush the needy. 00:20:12.799 --> 00:20:16.400 They hated truth and they crushed people. 00:20:16.720 --> 00:20:26.160 And yet they wanted God to crush their enemies while they ignored what he had to say and worshiped him improperly. 00:20:28.240 --> 00:20:33.279 Watch out if you think you can play fast and loose with God's word without consequences. 00:20:34.400 --> 00:20:39.680 Watch out if you think God will accept your self-centered versions of worship. 00:20:40.319 --> 00:20:42.720 For Israel, it was all a show. 00:20:43.359 --> 00:20:52.400 But they came dutifully, every opportunity to offer sacrifices, to do their duty, without any heart change. 00:20:52.480 --> 00:20:59.440 That's why God said, Let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream. 00:20:59.839 --> 00:21:11.200 Rather than seeing God as someone in whom they could trust, they saw God as merely another one of the panopoly of gods that they could the scriptures that we heard a little bit earlier, had that heart of stone taken out and replaced with the heart of flesh, his character will be seen in you like an ever-flowing stream. 00:22:27.279 00:23:03.759 With equity, with evenness, with rightness. 00:23:04.160 --> 00:23:11.519 Psalmist goes on to say a little bit later in verse 13, He will judge the world in righteousness and the peoples That was the path Israel took. 00:24:06.880 --> 00:24:21.440 When false doctrine rules our theology and worship, we are moved then to a false understanding of what God says, and then we are open to moving away from God Himself toward things that begin to compete with him. 00:24:22.799 --> 00:24:28.319 As time progressed, Israel came to accept the worship of other gods alongside Yahweh. Saturn. 00:24:42.240 --> 00:24:45.920 Yes, they had moved to worshiping planets. 00:24:47.039 --> 00:24:53.839 Bad theology led to improper worship where things that are not gods competed for Israel's 00:38:09.199 So let's consider Jesus for a moment from Isaiah chapter 11. 00:38:09.360 --> 00:38:12.480 This is God's prophetic statement about his son. 00:38:13.360 --> 00:38:17.280 His delight shall be in the fear of the Lord. 00:38:18.320 --> 00:38:24.239 He shall not judge by what his eyes see, he will not decide disputes by what comes into his ears. 00:38:24.880 --> 00:38:30.320 But with righteousness, with rightness he will judge the poor. 00:38:30.719 --> 00:38:34.960 He will decide with equity for the meek of the earth. 00:38:35.920 --> 00:38:43.760 Yes, he will strike the earth with the rod of his mouth and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked, but righteousness shall be the belt of his waist. 00:38:43.840 --> 00:38:46.400 He's going to have faithfulness tied around his garments. 00:38:48.159 --> 00:38:53.119 What Israel failed to do, Jesus did perfectly. 00:38:58.800 --> 00:39:11.760 When we were weak, even sinning against God Himself, Jesus came to
