--> 00:02:13.039 Ephesians chapter 4, verses 17 through 24. 00:02:13.520 --> 00:02:19.280 Before we get there, I'd like to notice with you what Paul does in those first 16 verses. 00:02:19.680 --> --> 00:02:35.759 That's where it ends in verse 16. 00:02:36.000 --> 00:02:46.639 Here in verse 17, Paul switches from the positive instructions to the negative instructions, from the do's to the don'ts, from the thou shalt's to the thou shalt not. 00:02:47.919 --> 00:02:59.120 But have no fear, my friends, for wherever God speaks, there is grace upon grace, both when he says yes and as we shall see when he says no. 00:02:59.360 --> 00:03:12.000 So beginning in verse 17, now this I say and testify in the Lord that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do in the futility of their minds. 00:03:15.680 --> 00:03:24.560 He's writing a letter to a bunch of Ephesian Gentiles, and he tells them not to walk as Gentiles. 00:03:25.039 --> 00:03:27.360 It's a little tongue-in-cheek, it meaningless thoughts? 00:04:34.879 --> 00:04:36.560 Look to your Bibles, Paul tells us. 00:04:36.720 --> 00:04:50.319 Verse 18, they are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to their hardness of heart. 00:04:53.120 --> 00:04:57.040 Oh, my friends, we could spend our entire morning just in that verse. 00:04:57.360 --> they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks to Him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 00:05:38.879 --> 00:05:43.040 You see, it's this ignorance about the things that are most important. 00:05:43.519 --> 00:05:51.600 They don't know about God, and they don't want to know about God, because they already know enough, so that they don't strangers to the covenants of promise. 00:06:38.319 --> 00:06:43.519 What Paul is telling us here is not some new teaching on Christian living. 00:06:45.120 --> 00:06:46.560 They already know this. 00:06:47.279 --> 00:06:57.600 This is a loving and gentle confrontation from the heart of a pastor to his people who know what it means to walk like a Gentile. 00:06:58.480 --> 00:07:00.079 Why are all the people there on the Sabbath day are watching Jesus to see, Mark says, whether he would heal him on the Sabbath so that they might accuse him. 00:08:27.439 --> 00:08:31.759 And Jesus said to the man with the withered hand, Come here. 00:08:33.840 --> 00:08:43.679 And he said to all of them, Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to kill? 00:08:45.039 --> They're overcome with shame because they've already repented in their hearts. 00:09:14.480 --> 00:09:16.159 They know what they did was wrong. 00:09:16.320 --> 00:09:20.399 They know they've disobeyed you or hurt somebody else. 00:09:20.720 --> 00:09:27.200 What that kid needs is a hug and a conversation about why sometimes they do the things we know we aren't supposed to do. 00:09:27.440 --> 00:09:36.240 But more commonly, and I think more of us are familiar with this, is the kid who crosses his arms and froze his eyebrows and somehow stares at that spot of wall right past your elbow. 00:09:36.559 --> 00:09:38.320 He won't look up at your eyes. 00:09:38.559 --> 00:09:49.840 He'll stare through the wall before he looks at you because all he wants is for you to just go away and leave him alone so he can keep doing the thing he knows he wasn't supposed to be doing in the first place. 00:09:50.559 --> 00:09:53.519 There's no repentance in that heart yet. 00:09:54.000 --> 00:09:57.360 What that heart needs is a confrontation. 00:09:59.440 --> 00:10:06.080 And that's exactly what our Lord does with these Pharisees who are acting like stubborn children. 00:10:06.720 --> 00:10:07.919 Verse 5. 00:10:08.879 --> 00:10:16.240 And Jesus looked around at them with anger, grieved at their hardness of heart. 00:10:16.639 --> 00:10:18.240 You see where we're going here? 00:10:19.679 --> 00:10:22.639 And he said to the man, stretch out your hand. 00:10:23.279 --> 00:10:27.279 And he stretched it out, and his hand was restored. 00:10:28.080 --> 00:10:37.440 Verse 6 The Pharisees went out and immediately held counsel with the Herodians against him, how to destroy him. 00:10:38.639 --> 00:10:45.039 A man's hand was just healed, and all they care about is that they got shown up on their turf. 00:10:45.279 --> 00:10:52.799 They got proven wrong, and they respond with anger and hardness of heart to destroy the one who taught them something about love. 00:10:54.559 --> 00:11:04.720 And such hardness of hearts characterizes the Gentiles who don't know God, just like it did the Pharisees who did not know God. 00:11:05.519 --> 00:11:10.639 You see, here in Ephesians 4, there's this cycle that Paul's laying out for us. 00:11:10.879 --> 00:11:32.879 A hard heart leads to ignorance about the things of God, which leads to being further away from God and godly living and more alienation, which leads to more darkness, which leads to more hardness of heart and more ignorance and more alienation, and it goes and it goes and it goes and on and on and on, further away from God towards eternal judgment. 00:11:33.120 --> 00:11:38.480 The Gentiles go in darkness and in hardness of heart. 00:11:40.399 --> 00:11:42.799 And now we turn to verse 19. 00:11:44.159 --> 00:11:49.679 In verse 18, in that sequence, Paul tells us what a futile mind is like. 00:11:51.440 --> 00:11:55.200 Here in verse 19, Paul begins to show us what they do. 00:11:55.759 --> 00:12:00.720 What is somebody who has no love in their heart, is ignorant of the things of God? 00:12:01.200 --> 00:12:02.879 How do they live? 00:12:04.720 --> 00:12:15.759 Paul says, they have become callous and have given themselves up to sensuality, greedy to practice every kind of impurity. 00:12:17.919 --> 00:12:21.759 They have given themselves up, completely handed themselves over. 00:12:22.240 --> 00:12:27.919 Matthew uses this exact same phrase to describe what Judas did to Jesus. 00:12:28.639 --> 00:12:29.039 Right? 00:12:29.200 --> 00:12:32.399 He handed him over, completely betrayed him. 00:12:33.120 --> 00:12:36.080 Do with this what you will, it means nothing to me. 00:12:38.000 --> 00:12:43.360 And that's what we and all of our friends who've yet to know Christ. 00:12:44.960 --> used all over your New Testament, but honestly, the best place to understand what it means is right here in Ephesians 4, when Paul tells us exactly what he means by sensuality, when he says they are greedy to practice every kind of impurity. 00:13:39.360 --> 00:13:42.399 This greed doesn't just mean wanting money. 00:13:42.960 --> 00:13:44.159 We know that, right? 00:13:44.240 --> 00:13:50.240 poison, right? 00:14:13.519 --> 00:14:15.200 Man, I can I just need a drink. 00:14:18.080 --> 00:14:24.159 But really, my friends, we are all greedy after so many things. 00:14:28.399 --> 00:14:32.000 Beautifully, Jesus felt this feeling. 00:14:34.480 --> 00:14:37.200 This insatiable hunger, this craving. 00:14:38.799 --> 00:14:54.159 In Luke chapter 22, Christ says to his disciples, I have earnestly desired, it's the same word in the Greek, I have been greedy to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. 00:14:55.279 --> 00:15:01.440 The man's about to be betrayed, handed over, mocked, beaten, and crucified, and he knows it. 00:15:01.919 --> 00:15:14.720 And yet he can't get off his mind because he's looking forward to it and craving it so strongly, the moment when he could say, This is my blood poured out for you. 00:15:17.919 --> 00:15:26.720 Oh Father God, may we hunger and thirst after such beautiful things as your son did. 00:15:31.039 --> 00:15:32.720 What are these Gentiles? 00:15:33.519 --> 00:15:37.679 Bleak and darkened in their godlessness and hardened hearts. 00:15:37.840 --> 00:15:39.759 What are they hungering for? 00:15:41.039 --> 00:15:42.639 The text continues, right? 00:15:42.879 --> 00:15:47.120 They are greedy to practice every kind of impurity. 00:15:48.879 --> 00:15:54.320 These Gentiles, they want things, they hunger and crave after things that are not clean. 00:15:56.320 --> 00:16:07.200 They want things that are defiled and dirty and unfit for common use, rotten eggs, spoiled milk, forbidden fruit. 00:16:08.240 --> 00:16:23.279 They want dying, decaying, rotting, meaningless, vain and empty things that pertain to the senses, that are physical, that are sensual. 00:16:24.720 --> 00:16:30.159 Their hearts burn with desire for sensual things that they ought not to want. 00:16:32.159 --> 00:16:34.480 And make no mistake, my friend. 00:16:36.240 --> 00:16:41.039 These Ephesians know exactly what Paul is talking about.
