Oh, that's amazing. 00:05:02.000 --> 00:05:04.319 I wonder whose idea that was. 00:05:04.879 --> 00:05:14.480 And the frog, quite proud of his incredible idea, opened his mouth to tell them whose idea this was. 00:05:15.680 --> 00:05:17.839 And that's when he fell to his death. 00:05:18.560 --> 00:05:22.879 Um, wow, the first service got that punchline a little bit better than you guys did. 00:05:24.000 --> 00:05:26.639 I just boom, ended like that. 00:05:26.800 --> 00:05:32.160 He went to go tell them whose idea it was, and it led to his demise. 00:05:32.319 --> 00:05:47.680 The frog, determining his life in the temporary winter cold, was definitively unsatisfied and decided to direct his time, energy, and efforts towards an ideal that ended up not being worth the price. 00:05:48.000 --> 00:05:51.040 The winter that the frog lived in was not permanent. 00:05:51.279 --> 00:05:54.399 It obviously had not been a matter of survival. 00:05:54.480 --> 00:06:00.639 He had been surviving many winters up till this point, so it wasn't that he wasn't able to live through them. 00:06:01.120 --> 00:06:09.040 The situation was not a matter of that, but it was a matter of chasing after what was perceived to be a better life out there. 00:06:09.920 --> 00:06:14.240 An idea in his mind that directed his time, energy, and efforts. 00:06:14.480 --> 00:06:18.160 And that brings me to the question as we get started here this morning. 00:06:18.480 --> 00:06:28.079 Are you seeking a life that is worth your time, energy, and efforts, or are you chasing after an ideal that's ultimately not worth the price? 00:06:28.319 --> 00:06:36.000 Are you living a life, as the text is going to ask the question, are you living a life that is worth living? 00:06:36.240 --> 00:06:42.000 And for clarification, I'm not referring to the inherent value that every single life has. 00:06:42.240 --> 00:06:46.560 We as Christians would affirm that every life matters. 00:06:46.720 --> 00:06:49.680 Every life has inherent value and worth. 00:06:49.920 --> 00:06:57.120 From the womb all the way to the tomb, every single life at every single stage of development has intrinsic worth. 00:06:57.279 --> 00:06:59.120 That's not what I'm referring to. 00:06:59.279 --> 00:07:04.959 However, we would also affirm that not every pursuit in life is of equal value. 00:07:05.120 --> 00:07:17.519 And for example, if I were to tell you that my life as a father was characterized by me sitting on my butt, watching TV, watching ESPN all day and eating tacos, uh, you would say that it's not worth it. 00:07:17.680 --> 00:07:25.519 That rather I should be getting up off my butt, turning off the TV, uh, put the tacos away, and engage with my children. 00:07:25.600 --> 00:07:30.800 That's a far more worthy pursuit than my own selfish desires and needs, right? 00:07:30.879 --> 00:07:32.720 You try you see what I'm saying here? 00:07:32.959 --> 00:07:36.959 So there are things in life worth pursuing and things in life that aren't. 00:07:37.120 --> 00:07:42.160 And that's what I would say is where we're going to make that distinction. 00:07:42.399 --> 00:07:52.480 And just as the frog pursued a life that was mere fantasy and yet not worth his life, there are many fantasies in life that we can pursue, but none of them are worth it. 00:07:52.639 --> 00:07:58.720 I want us to examine this morning a life that is worth living. 00:07:58.879 --> 00:08:03.759 I want us to look at what that kind of life looks like from the words of the Apostle Paul. 00:08:03.920 --> 00:08:11.040 And very simply, I want to summarize the life worth living is not any type of ritual or spiritual exercise. 00:08:11.199 --> 00:08:14.879 The life worth living is a life given to Jesus Christ. 00:08:15.360 --> 00:08:22.720 That's the summation of what we're going to unpack here this morning is a life given over to the Lordship of Jesus Christ. 00:08:22.959 --> 00:08:36.399 And if you're new here or if you're not a Christian and you're kind of checking this whole Christianity thing out, I'd encourage you to uh to think on these things as we unpack them what we believe is worth living. 00:08:36.639 --> 00:08:47.440 I can tell you both from the testimony of Scripture and just from my short time uh here on earth that there are many things demanding our time, energy, and attention. 00:08:47.679 --> 00:08:48.639 Many things. 00:08:48.879 --> 00:08:55.840 You got family, you got work, you got finances, you have an infinite amount of things asking for your attention. 00:08:56.240 --> 00:09:01.360 And there are many things that we are tempted to give our time, energy, and efforts towards. 00:09:01.600 --> 00:09:03.600 But in the end, they're all temporal. 00:09:04.159 --> 00:09:05.279 They're all temporal. 00:09:06.320 --> 00:09:09.200 So are those things worth living life for? 00:09:09.679 --> 00:09:16.080 I would say not, which is why I'd encourage you to think on these things, if that's where you're at. 00:09:16.240 --> 00:09:21.600 Before we take off in verse 27, I want to set up the context for where we're going to be anchoring down in the text. 00:09:21.759 --> 00:09:27.600 Uh, Philippians is a letter written by the Apostle Paul to the church in the Roman colony of Philippi. 00:09:27.759 --> 00:09:35.440 Unlike many other wholesale letters to churches, there was no um large scandals uh happening at this church. 00:09:35.600 --> 00:09:39.840 There weren't threats of false teaching uh sinking into this church. 00:09:40.000 --> 00:09:48.639 Uh there were, however, very real pressures that the Philippian Christians were experiencing, um, and those came from societal and governmental persecution. 00:09:48.879 --> 00:09:52.559 They were experiencing those kinds of pressures. 00:09:52.960 --> 00:09:57.840 And Paul himself is writing this letter from a Roman jail. 00:09:58.080 --> 00:10:03.519 He's writing this letter from jail because he just wouldn't shut up about who Jesus was. 00:10:04.960 --> 00:10:13.759 In light of the struggles that the apostle and the Philippians were experiencing, Paul writes this letter to encourage and embolden the Christians living there. 00:10:14.000 --> 00:10:20.559 In verses 1 through 11, Paul greets the Philippians and expresses his love and affection for them as partners in the gospel together. 00:10:20.639 --> 00:10:26.159 It was not just me and them, it was us working together for the gospel of Christ. 00:10:26.320 --> 00:10:34.879 In verses 12 through 18, he reassures the Philippians that what has happened to him, again, he is writing this letter from prison, okay? 00:10:35.200 --> 00:10:37.679 He's living his best life now, okay? 00:10:37.919 --> 00:10:40.399 From prison, writing this letter. 00:10:40.559 --> 00:10:46.639 Um he writes that he what has happened to him has served to advance the gospel of Jesus Christ. 00:10:46.720 --> 00:11:02.799 And not only is Paul in prison, but there are other preachers out there coming along and tainting Paul's name, trying to drag him through the mud, ruin his reputation, and Paul shrugs it off saying, You know what, I don't care what their intentions are towards me, as long as they're preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ. 00:11:03.519 --> 00:11:12.159 And then in verses 19 through where we're going to be this morning in verses 27 through 30, he gives the Philippian church his perspective on suffering. 00:11:12.399 --> 00:11:23.360 Paul gives an emphatic summary statement on his attitude towards suffering in verse 21, in which he says, For to me to live is Christ and to die is gain. 00:11:24.399 --> 00:11:30.240 While he is here on earth, he is going to be Christ's ambassador to the world. 00:11:30.480 --> 00:11:38.960 And if he experiences any type of opposition that claims his life, it doesn't matter because he gets to gain eternal glory with God in heaven. 00:11:39.279 --> 00:11:41.679 Imagine having that kind of perspective. 00:11:42.000 --> 00:11:48.480 Can you imagine trying to oppose a person with that kind of mentality and attitude on life? 00:11:48.720 --> 00:11:49.200 You know what? 00:11:49.279 --> 00:11:51.279 While I'm here, I'm just going to talk about Jesus. 00:11:51.360 --> 00:11:53.679 And if you kill me, it doesn't matter. 00:11:54.080 --> 00:11:57.679 I'm going to go to heaven and I'm going to be with God for forever. 00:11:57.759 --> 00:12:03.200 You couldn't touch the Apostle Paul, and that's why he made such a noise in his day. 00:12:03.519 --> 00:12:08.720 He went through shipwrecks, he was stoned, he was beaten, he was jailed. 00:12:08.879 --> 00:12:16.399 Nothing you can do could slow this guy down because to him, to live is Christ and to die is gain. 00:12:16.480 --> 00:12:21.200 And in light of that attitude, Paul makes a bold charge in verse 27. 00:12:21.600 --> 00:12:22.960 So join me in the text. 00:12:23.200 --> 00:12:24.159 Verse 27. 00:12:24.559 --> 00:12:28.799 Paul says, only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ. 00:12:28.960 --> 00:12:36.879 And we need to stop there and unpack what that's saying there because there are tremendous implications for everything else we're going to look at here this morning. 00:12:37.360 --> 00:12:48.399 That phrase, let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, if you look at the original languages that the Bible was written in, accurately reads, live as citizens of the kingdom. 00:12:48.720 --> 00:12:52.559 Live as citizens of the kingdom of the gospel of Christ. 00:12:52.799 --> 00:12:55.279 Behave as citizens of the kingdom. 00:12:55.360 --> 00:12:58.639 And that's the life I want to argue is the life worth living. 00:12:58.799 --> 00:13:10.080 The gospel of Jesus Christ is the means by which the kingdom of God is manifested, and it is an eternal message for an eternal reality that cannot disappear or be taken away. 00:13:10.639 --> 00:13:17.279 A life lived for this message and for this reality is a life that will make an everlasting difference. 00:13:17.759 --> 00:13:26.000 If you're here this morning and you are a Christian, I would argue that your primary allegiance is not to the good old US of A. 00:13:26.720 --> 00:13:30.080 It's not to a political party or any human cause. 00:13:30.399 --> 00:13:32.720 It's not even primarily to your family. 00:13:33.440 --> 00:13:38.559 Your allegiance is to the rule and reign of King Jesus. 00:13:39.039 --> 00:13:45.200 Because King Jesus and his kingdom can never disappear or go away. 00:13:45.519 --> 00:13:50.159 The Babylonian Empire, it changed over time and it disappeared. 00:13:50.320 --> 00:13:51.279 It died. 00:13:51.600 --> 00:14:00.480 The Greek Empire, everything Alexander the Great conquered and accomplished, changed over time and the Greek Empire died. 00:14:00.639 --> 00:14:06.000 The Roman Empire, one of the greatest empires the world has ever known, changed over time and it died. 00:14:06.080 --> 00:14:12.480 And I'm I'm willing to bet that the good old US of A has changed over time and will eventually pass away. 00:14:13.120 --> 00:14:15.519 The US of A is not going to last here long. 00:14:15.919 --> 00:14:19.440 Neither is any other temporal reality that we live in. 00:14:19.759 --> 00:14:28.639 Which is why our life given to the eternal reality of King Jesus and his reign and rule in our life is the one thing worth living for. 00:14:28.799 --> 00:14:31.679 And I hope I'm communicating that to you this morning. 00:14:31.840 --> 00:14:38.559 The beauty and significance of the life worth living is that devoted as a citizen of the kingdom of God. 00:14:38.720 --> 00:14:44.159 So the question we naturally stumble upon is what does it mean to behave as a citizen of God's kingdom? 00:14:52.879 --> 00:14:56.320 And I'm glad you're asking that question because I have a nice neat outline for you. 00:14:56.399 --> 00:14:58.879 Type A personalities, okay, who like to take notes. 00:14:59.120 --> 00:15:04.080 First point here this morning: a life worth living is loud. 00:15:04.240 --> 00:15:06.559 A life worth living is loud. 00:15:08.559 --> 00:15:25.120 Verse 27 says, Let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear that you are standing firm in one spirit with one mind, striving side by side for faith in the gospel. 00:15:25.279 --> 00:15:37.279 I want us to back up and say, see that Paul is saying that I want you to live as citizens of the kingdom so that whether I'm there or whether I'm absent, I may hear of you. 00:15:38.080 --> 00:15:48.559 Paul has a certainty here that he is going to hear of the Philippians and their conduct and how they're living life, if they're living as citizens of the kingdom of God. 00:15:48.960 --> 00:15:51.360 Their witness is going to be loud. 00:15:51.679 --> 00:15:53.759 He has so much confidence here. 00:15:54.080 --> 00:15:58.720 He doesn't even know if someone's going to come and visit him in jail and give them a progress report on the Philippians. 00:15:58.879 --> 00:16:02.480 He doesn't know if he's going to be able to come and visit them in person. 00:16:02.720 --> 00:16:06.320 He doesn't know if he's going to be able to catch it word of mouth through the rumor mill. 00:16:06.639 --> 00:16:15.200 He knows for one thing that if the Philippians are living as citizens of the kingdom of God, it's going to make some noise, and he is for sure going to hear of it. 00:16:17.120 --> 00:16:21.840 The way they live echoes through their communities, their families, their workplaces. 00:16:22.159 --> 00:16:27.679 It's not a quiet endeavor, it's one that eventually is going to draw the attention of a watching world. 00:16:27.840 --> 00:16:31.039 If you read the book of Acts, that's exactly what happens. 00:16:31.360 --> 00:16:37.039 All the Christians we're doing in the book of Acts, we're telling other people about Jesus and loving people. 00:16:37.679 --> 00:16:40.879 Like, that's not loud and obnoxious, okay? 00:16:41.039 --> 00:16:42.879 I know loud and obnoxious. 00:16:43.039 --> 00:16:46.000 I've worked with teenagers for 10 years, okay? 00:16:47.600 --> 00:17:00.639 Lovingly telling people about Jesus and meeting the needs of people around you out of that love is not loud and obnoxious, and yet they drew the attention of the people around them. 00:17:00.879 --> 00:17:06.799 That's the story of the book of Acts, is the gospel spreading through the noise the church made. 00:17:07.039 --> 00:17:14.559 And so I want to ask here this morning, in light of that, how loud is your faith? 00:17:15.440 --> 00:17:19.440 What kind of noise does your faith make in your life? 00:17:20.480 --> 00:17:22.559 Do your kids hear your faith? 00:17:22.720 --> 00:17:24.559 Do your neighbors hear your faith? 00:17:24.640 --> 00:17:34.240 Do your coworkers, professors, supervisors, your commanding officers or your subordinates, do they hear your faith in your life? 00:17:34.400 --> 00:17:38.000 How loud is our witness as a church? 00:20:57.119 --> 00:21:01.599 What kind of noise might we make together as a church? 00:21:02.160 --> 00:21:08.640 The life worth living is loud in its witness because it makes a difference in eternity for others. 00:21:08.880 --> 00:21:23.680 Paul is so certain that if they're behaving as citizens of the kingdom, if they're living that life that is worthy of the gospel, uh Paul writing this to the Philippians 2,000 years ago was certain that he would hear of the noise that their witness was making, no matter what. 00:21:25.359 --> 00:21:31.839 What kind of noise might we make as we pursue the life worth living as citizens of the kingdom? 00:29:20.079 --> 00:29:26.480 But uh it was a slow day, it was at a call center, we didn't have much work at that point, so we all gathered together in a circle. 00:29:26.559 --> 00:29:32.160 I got drawn in to just kind of hear what they were talking about, and they were talking about all the hot button cultural issues, right? 00:29:32.559 --> 00:29:37.440 Talking about LGBTQ, uh women in the military, abortion. 00:29:37.680 --> 00:29:41.920 I'm not sure what a bunch of old veterans doing circling up talking about those issues. 00:29:42.000 --> 00:29:47.839 Like usually it's like old war stories, but at that point it was solving all the world's issues. 00:29:48.079 --> 00:29:55.839 And I I got pulled in just to kind of sit in here, but then there came a point in that conversation where they turned to me and said, What do you think, Jeremy? 00:30:59.119 --> 00:31:04.319 I didn't stand at their desk with the anti-abortion sign, I wasn't picketing their position at all. 00:31:04.480 --> 00:31:10.319 I just simply shared with as much grace as God gave me at that moment what I believed as a Christian. 00:31:10.400 --> 00:31:14.799 And what it did for some people at that moment is it flipped a switch. 00:31:15.200 --> 00:31:16.880 This guy's a Christian. 00:31:17.519 --> 00:31:20.880 He hates people, he discriminates. 00:31:23.359 --> 00:31:32.960 And at that moment, I began to realize that there is very real pressure by simply sharing your faith, even in an American workplace. 00:31:34.079 --> 00:31:35.039 It happens. 00:31:35.759 --> 00:31:36.720 It's going to happen. 00:31:36.880 --> 00:31:40.720 Jesus says, if the world hates you, no, it hated me first. 00:31:40.799 --> 00:31:42.079 It came after Jesus. 00:31:42.319 --> 00:31:44.720 A master is not greater than his servant. 00:31:44.880 --> 00:31:48.720 If they persecuted Christ, they're going to come after his followers. 00:31:48.880 --> 00:31:52.720 That's why the disciples scattered when they came for him. 00:31:53.680 --> 00:32:08.079 But the reason we ought to have boldness is not because we have some sort of uh intestinal fortitude that we can muster through somehow, is because the one thing that matters in life cannot be taken away from you. 00:32:08.400 --> 00:32:10.240 It can't be taken away from you. 00:32:10.400 --> 00:32:17.519 It doesn't matter if they come for your life, it doesn't matter if they come for your job, they cannot take away what you have in Jesus Christ. 00:32:17.839 --> 00:32:18.720 They can't. 00:32:19.039 --> 00:32:23.920 Psalm 118, verse 6 says, The Lord is on my side, I will not fear. 00:32:24.079 --> 00:32:25.599 What can man do to me? 00:32:25.759 --> 00:32:32.240 If God is in my corner, come at me, because you can't do anything to touch me unless he gives you permission. 00:32:32.400 --> 00:32:35.759 And again, to live is Christ and to die is gain. 00:32:35.920 --> 00:32:44.480 Romans chapter 8, verse 35, Paul speaking again to the church in Rome, writes this passage, and this is one of my favorite verses in all the Bible. 00:32:44.720 --> 00:32:49.359 Verse 35, he says, Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? 00:32:49.599 --> 00:32:50.880 A hypothetical question. 00:32:51.119 --> 00:32:52.640 Fill in the blank if you'd like. 00:32:52.799 --> 00:32:54.319 He gives us a few options here. 00:32:54.480 --> 00:33:00.799 Shall tribulation or distress or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? 00:33:01.119 --> 00:33:03.359 Wow, Paul, that's a lot of options. 00:33:04.640 --> 00:33:10.480 Shall any of these things remove you from the love of God that you have in Christ? 00:33:10.880 --> 00:33:11.759 I don't know, Paul. 00:33:11.920 --> 00:33:12.799 You want to answer? 00:33:13.039 --> 00:33:14.079 Verse 37. 00:33:14.640 --> 00:33:14.960 No. 00:33:16.240 --> 00:33:16.559 No. 00:33:17.759 --> 00:33:26.640 In all these things, in all the hardships you might experience in all these things, we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 00:33:26.799 --> 00:33:40.319 For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. 00:33:40.559 --> 00:33:43.680 Nothing, nothing can come against you. 00:33:45.039 --> 00:33:53.599 And that is why Paul says, to live a life worth living, to behave as a citizen of the kingdom of God, we ought to be bold. 00:33:54.400 --> 00:33:57.680 Bold in our witness, bold in our faith. 00:33:58.799 --> 00:34:01.680 Not afraid of anything that might come our way. 00:34:02.000 --> 00:34:07.599 Because the one thing that matters that matters in life cannot be taken away from you. 00:34:08.880 --> 00:34:16.880 Open Doors Ministry is an international ministry that uh ministers to the needs of the persecuted church worldwide. 00:34:17.599 --> 00:34:22.079 And they uh they shared the following true story about a Muslim convert to Christ. 00:34:22.960 --> 00:34:26.159 There's a gentleman named Bagas, and that was not his real name. 00:34:26.320 --> 00:34:29.599 It was an alias uh for the sake of the interview they were conducting. 00:34:29.679 --> 00:34:34.400 He came to know Jesus in 2014 and was baptized the following year. 00:34:34.639 --> 00:34:43.599 And looking at the external circumstances of his life, it would be easy to conclude that since following Jesus, his life had not since improved. 00:34:43.760 --> 00:34:46.480 Before he came to Jesus, he was a trash picker. 00:34:46.639 --> 00:34:49.679 After following Jesus, he was still a trash picker. 00:34:49.840 --> 00:34:52.639 Like things did not get infinitely better for him. 00:34:52.800 --> 00:34:56.320 He kind of remained in the same uh position as he was. 00:34:56.480 --> 00:34:58.480 But something changed in Baggis. 00:34:59.119 --> 00:35:03.039 They asked him, How did you feel after following Jesus? 00:35:03.199 --> 00:35:05.039 And he said, very different. 00:35:05.360 --> 00:35:07.519 I felt happy and restful. 00:35:08.079 --> 00:35:12.320 And that kind of seems like just like a really petty answer, but but look at this. 00:35:12.480 --> 00:35:20.079 Baggis then began quietly mentioning that he was a house church leader of 15 former Muslims in his village. 00:35:20.320 --> 00:35:26.400 The journalist also discovered that Baggis' life was far from untroubled as a follower of Christ. 00:35:26.639 --> 00:35:33.280 A villager had seen Baggus sharing his story of Jesus with a neighbor and reported him to the village authorities. 00:35:33.519 --> 00:35:41.679 The authorities dragged him and 15 others to the paddy field and threatened to kill them unless they canted their faith and returned to Islam. 00:35:42.480 --> 00:35:52.159 And in light of that pressure, that that instant, imminent moment of persecution, Baggis refused and remained firm in his new faith. 00:35:52.400 --> 00:36:02.159 And while his life was spared, he is now forced to live apart from his wife and children, spending his days on the street, and now he can only see them periodically. 00:36:03.440 --> 00:36:06.320 If you ask Baggis, is it worth it? 00:36:07.519 --> 00:36:08.559 Absolutely. 00:36:09.840 --> 00:36:12.559 I never regretted my decision to follow Jesus. 00:36:12.639 --> 00:36:17.199 He said without a hint of doubt, I'm following him wholeheartedly. 00:36:18.079 --> 00:36:24.400 And that's a man who lives a life in a country where Christianity is essentially outlawed. 00:36:24.559 --> 00:36:31.760 You and I live in a country where we get to celebrate our faith, we get to live out our faith, we get to proclaim our faith. 00:36:32.880 --> 00:36:36.320 My question to you is, what's the worst that could happen?
