Again with the mindfulness?? Well, yes. But hear me out. This is not another podcast that will tell you to sit down on the cushion and watch your breath for 30 minutes. Why? Because you don't have time for that, am I right? You're a busy mom, or hustling dad, or whatever you wanna call it. You have kids tugging at your pants, knocking on your bathroom door, and waking you up at hours you never wanted to meet up close.

But all of that doesn't mean you can't enjoy the beautiful gifts that mindfulness practice can bring you. In this episode, I'm sharing with you some ways in which you can practice being more mindful and aware while still doing your daily routine with and without your children. As simple as that.

Would you become an enlightened Buddha out of those practices? Probably not. But that's not the point anyway. But you very well might become a more attuned parent, more sensitive and open with yourself and your children. And doesn't that mean the world?

Apparently, we have to start another school year with COVID still present in our lives. When this episode was first published, things looked different. Today we have vaccinations for 12 years old and above, but many children still have to go to school in the shadow of a global pandemic.

How do you motivate your children? What are the ways by which you can communicate your message to your children, no matter their age, and make them interested in what you have to say?

This is not about getting them to listen in a disciplinary kind of way. This is about making a true connection with them, sharing your world with them, and finding ways to convey your message in a motivating way, helping them become who they wish to be.

These are the topics I discuss in today's episode with my guest, Dr. Jim Van Allan. Jim is a speaker, trainer, and podcaster with clients across the nation. He runs the successful podcast 'Communicate to Motivate' which discusses developing strong communication skills in all areas of life. Jim is the Vice President of Schools for the Jon Gordon Companies and runs the Positive Schools program. He and his team provide training for all K-12 schools on leadership, communication, and culture. Jim is also a professor of communication studies with Keiser University teaching public speaking, interpersonal communication, and business and professional communication in a fully online setting.

It's time to talk about attachment parenting. And more specifically, is it any good? Attachment parenting is a method developed by William and Marth Sears, and is a very popular parenting method these days. Attachment parenting followers focus on a close relationship with the baby and developing sensitive communication with it.

Sounds good, no? But the problem is that attachment parenting has its flaws, and it's time to talk about them. This is why I created this podcast episode, which turned out so long I had to split it in two. So this is part 1, where you'll learn what attachment parenting is, what are the Seven Baby Bs (fundamental principles) of the method, and how it came to be. Do you know how they say "when life gives you lemons, make a lemonade?" 🍋

Well, I love lemonade. I love lemons even more. But some lemons I would rather live without.

Two months ago, my country entered another round of escalation with the rulers of Gaza strip. For almost two weeks, they fired rockets into Israel, which meant that we could hear a war siren at any hour of the day and run into shelter. One rocket even hit a street not far away from my home, killing one man. Not my kind of a lemon, you see?

But in the process of those two weeks, I could notice some things about myself as a parent, and that's what I want to share with you in this episode.

2020 is a year that will be talked about and remembered for a long time. And I think that one of the main things that we are going to see in the coming years are changes to educational systems and long-held beliefs.
When covid hit and lockdowns started to be part of our lives, every parent had to become a kind of a homeschooler. While some of us are happy to bring the kids back to school, some are willing to continue in the homeschooling adventure to some capacity.
But doing homeschooling right requires knowledge, support, and understanding. This is why in today's episode I'm talking with Gabi Haberer. Once a school principal and now a homeschooling mom and a proponent of homeschooling, Gabi devotes her career to help parents transition to homeschool via her online community.

Welcome to the 50th episode of The Apparently Parent Podcast! Yay! I'm so happy you're here, celebrating this with me. When I started working on this podcast, I didn't think we're going to go through a global pandemic, lockdowns, and all that stuff, but we did, and I think that working on this podcast, putting out a weekly episode even with all that was happening, was one of the things that really helped me manage those tougher times.

To celebrate this achievement, I put up a special episode, in which I invite you to travel back in time.

You see, in the podcast, I sometimes talk with interesting guests who have something to say about children, parenting, and the in-between. And I have started to ask each guest one specific question at the end of the conversation. And this question goes a little bit like this:

If you could go back in time, and meet your younger self, right before you became a parent, what would you like to tell that younger self?

I really like this question, because as a therapist, I think this mental time travel can be really powerful. Whether we are moving backward or forward in time, as long as we keep the perspective, we can actually learn a lot and help ourselves in the process.

By going back in time and "talking" with your younger self, you can find a new place of compassion, understanding, and wisdom within yourself. You might also see how much you have progressed and grown through the years.

In this episode, I invite you to listen to the answers that my wonderful guests have provided to this question. I hope you'd take the time and listen because I'm sure you might find yourself in one or more of the answers.

And after you listen, I invite you to think about this question yourself and answer it on your own. Maybe take a piece of paper, or open a fresh page in your journal and write it down. As America is stepping into a new presidency, at the end of a tumultuous couple of weeks, I wanted to re-publish an older episode. This was originally published in the wake of the Black Lives Matter movement after the murder of George Floyd. Back then I wanted to talk about how we, as parents, have a responsibility to address those issues with our children, and proposed some ways to do so.

I think it's a good moment in history to address these issues again. Whether you live in the US or not, it's good to be able to talk with your children about what is going on in the political and social spheres of our lives. By creating an open dialogue, you can help your children become more aware and conscious. And I am one who believes that this is important if we want to create a better world.

Congratulations! We have officially got to the end of 2020. Who would have thought that this year would turn this way, huh?
But it had, and now it's over, and we can start a fresh new year, full of hopes and dreams!

But before we make a run into 2021, I believe we should stop for a couple of moments and say goodbye to 2020 by actually looking at the things that it brought us. No, not necessarily the lockdowns, anxiety, and uncertainty. I'm talking about the good stuff.

What good stuff? In this episode, I share my own. The things I have learned about myself and my family, and what I want to take with me to the next year.
