[00:01:43] Bryan Murphy: And the blog helps visitors experience authentic Hawaiian culture, discover hidden gems, and support local businesses. If anyone knows where to eat. Like a local on Maui. It's definitely Liza, and that's why I'm really excited for her to be joining this episode of Hawaii's Best. This is gonna be a lot of fun.

[00:02:03] Bryan Murphy: There's a lot of take in and some really great spots and some tips along the way. By the end of this episode, you'll know exactly where to go. [00:02:44] Bryan Murphy: Isa, thank you so much for coming on. Hawaii's best, you're joining us from the beautiful island of. Maui, my wife and i's favorite island, many people's favorite island, Maui Noko. Oi. How are you doing on this fine day?

[00:02:58] Liza Pierce: Oh, excellent. Like what we usually say, you say epic. Epic weather here and yeah, it's early morning, but yeah, the sun is already out and enjoying another great day of Maui.

[00:03:12] Bryan Murphy: Awesome. I can't wait to get into talking more about where locals eat on Maui and what's behind that is how people can support local for people to get, maybe get to know you a little bit more in your own words, life on Maui for you and a little bit about your world and what you do.

[00:03:31] Liza Pierce: Okay. Well, I am what they call.

[00:03:34] Liza Pierce: Flow not grown on Maui. I am originally from the Philippines. I came here in 1994 and I love Maui. I, this is my home now and you know, I'm really passionate about helping Maui. Just embracing the culture, and so what I'm known for is my blog, a Maui blog. I started that in 2005 and I started it outta gratitude that I'm living here in one of the most beautiful places on earth.

[00:04:07] Liza Pierce: And you know, I just love sharing and share about the beaches. Lum areas, flowers, sunsets, and yeah, people started kind of following because they, you know, a lot of people love Maui too, right? It grew from there. One of the mission of that blog is also to give back, and so I love supporting small businesses and local businesses here in Maui.

[00:04:32] Liza Pierce: You'll see me mentioning a lot of them, you know, in my blog. So when I started doing my social media handle, I just kept with a brand. So my Instagram is a Maui blog, Twitter, a Maui blog. So now people know me as a Maui blog. They don't even remember my name. When they see me and they see me in the supermarket, you know the visitors coming here and then they see me and like I'm Molly Blog, you know, but they don't remember my name, which is fine with me.

[00:05:02] Liza Pierce: I'm okay being known as a M blog, you know? That's my, my nickname now.

[00:05:08] Bryan Murphy: That's great. I mean, I can definitely relate to and how. And the why you started a Maui blog is really how and why I started Hawaii's best is really outta gratitude and love for Hawaii. You know, visiting so many times and seeing the same people coming back and then like just wanting to hear story and, and hear about more behind the.

[00:05:34] Bryan Murphy: Big attractions and what does it mean to truly, like, what's it like to live in Hawaii and, and what's it like to live on Maui and what's it like to really support local, like, truly, like what does that really mean? And that's kinda where things started for me. And so that's cool. Like just hearing, hearing your origin story with a Maui blog, so I love that.

[00:05:55] Liza Pierce: Thank you. Yeah. So, and that's why I'm glad we're talking about where locals eat because you know, where the visitors should go and try local, not just stay in their resort and, you know, explore, explore around different areas and just, you know, embrace the culture. And one of the ways of embracing it is, you know.

[00:06:15] Liza Pierce: Find the food.

[00:06:16] Bryan Murphy: So let's, let's just get into it then, because I think people listening right now are like, all right, just, you know, gimme the list. I, I'm, I'm going to, I'm going to Maui this summer and I just wanna know where I should eat. And we're gonna give some love to some of these spots today. And there's so many other great spots too, to.

[00:06:35] Bryan Murphy: Try and, and support along your travels on Maui. So, okay. Where do we, where do we even start?

[00:06:41] Liza Pierce: Just to clarify, like what you said, there's a lot of different spots and there's also different costs. Are some expensive. Oh, true. There's average. There's, you know, where do you find the cheap one? Maui's always expensive.

[00:06:53] Liza Pierce: This just makes that straight, right? Yeah. So when we say, but these are the more affordable, it still probably will, looks expensive, but these are the good ones to try that. You know, local people here in Maui go regular on a regular basis. That's what we're gonna be mentioning here. So if we don't mention some of your favorites, you know, some of you have been here.

[00:07:13] Liza Pierce: Just know that this is more focused on the local, everyday places to go. Right.

[00:07:18] Bryan Murphy: Love it. Okay, let's go.

[00:07:20] Liza Pierce: You're visiting and you're thinking, okay, well, you know, we really wanna experience the local stuff. Well better go to Wailuku ka. That's the central part of Maui. When people are visiting, they usually probably stay in Kihei side or on Nali side, you know?

[00:07:38] Liza Pierce: Mm-hmm. But you have to make a point to go to Wailuku to find the local eateries there. And usually you'll probably visit El Valley right when you come here. So time that day when you're visiting EO Valley to explore some of the local places. And here are some of the local interesting places to eat.

[00:07:58] Liza Pierce: Number one is Sam Satos. Have you been to Sam Satos?

[00:08:03] Bryan Murphy: I haven't been, no.

[00:08:05] Liza Pierce: Oh, this, oh, every local you talk to will know Sam. It's kind of close to, actually to EO Valley, and so this is. The place to go. However, we must warn the people that there's always a long line, ah,

[00:08:21] Stick Figure - Music: because it's

[00:08:21] Liza Pierce: so popular. They open early, they're known for their noodles and even hamburger and french fries, which is, you know, not really very local, but they're known for that too, and a barbecue.

[00:08:35] Liza Pierce: But they're Doodle Samara Noodle is very popular. So you know, they're also really, really good because they've been around for a long time. They open up 1933.

[00:08:48] Bryan Murphy: 33, so

[00:08:48] Liza Pierce: over 90 years. Oh

[00:08:49] Bryan Murphy: my goodness.

[00:08:50] Liza Pierce: And they moved several places. Right now they're in the West Luca Industrial. They've been here for a long time around the area in Y Luca, you know, there are offices, state offices, county offices, and people go there for lunch, you know, so lunch is very busy.

[00:09:06] Liza Pierce: But yeah, so if you wanna try something super special for local, you know, at the heart of local people, then Sam Saros is number one.

[00:09:14] Bryan Murphy: And really just for like a map for people. I mean, you fly into Kaha, Lui, and then. Luca, you kind of have to go through in order to get to South Shore or west side. That's

[00:09:24] Liza Pierce: right.

[00:09:25] Bryan Murphy: Great. Okay.

[00:09:25] Liza Pierce: Okay, so aside from Sams, there's another one that's kind of similar to Sams. It's called Tasty Crus, so it's another old timer, another og. They started in 1957 and they're known for their side and fried rice. Pancake of course, because their taste, taste crus is just people know about them, about their macadamia at pancake.

[00:09:51] Liza Pierce: Nice. And then another one in Waku is called Ichiban. Oka Zia. So it's Ichiban when you say Ichiban. Tiny place. Actually, they don't have a sit down. This one you will have to go buy your plate lunch. It's close to where the county and state office is. In Y Luco, there's this little place, it's

[00:10:12] Bryan Murphy: just like a little kind of, not a shack, but like just a little building there.

[00:10:16] Bryan Murphy: It's not

[00:10:16] Liza Pierce: a shack, but it's just a little place. Right. You'll see people sometimes they go out in line because they cannot fit inside. Right, right,

[00:10:23] Bryan Murphy: right.

[00:10:24] Liza Pierce: Again, busy for lunches, but local food is so good, you know, you can tell by the name there's got some Japanese influence in there. Yeah. But they're local.

[00:10:33] Liza Pierce: You know, the chicken kasu and chicken teriyaki plate lunches, which, you know, people know about the plate lunches, right? Do we need to explain to them about plate lunches?

[00:10:44] Bryan Murphy: If you don't know what a plate lunch is, I'll link down in the episode below.

[00:10:48] Stick Figure - Music: Yes.

[00:10:49] Bryan Murphy: We've had an episode with, well actually it's a, it's a local Hawaiian family where I live.

[00:10:54] Bryan Murphy: They opened up a plate lunch spot. Oh. So we had them on the podcast, so I'll be sure to link that below for That's exciting, those listening. Yeah,

[00:11:01] Liza Pierce: I'm glad. I'm glad. So we don't have to discuss that. Just listen to that podcast. Mm-hmm. Yeah. Okay. So now I mentioned the, the OG one, the older ones. Here's something newer in Baku.

[00:11:12] Liza Pierce: It's called Tiffany's. It's originally started in nine oh 2003.

[00:11:18] Stick Figure - Music: Okay.

[00:11:19] Liza Pierce: However, in 2022, chef Sheldon and his wife Janice, you know, chef Sheldon is the one that owns Tin Roof. Oh, very popular and beloved chef here on Maui. So they took over Tiffany's. What they did is it remained, got a local atmosphere. They did not change it, but they also kind of improve on the food, the menu.

[00:11:47] Liza Pierce: There's still a lot of the old menu that they have, but it's now become a popular spot for locals to go. Is

[00:11:54] Bryan Murphy: that the black brick? Like a black brick building? Yes. Okay.

[00:11:59] Liza Pierce: Okay. It's, it's a black, the nice thing is they have a good parking lot across the street.

[00:12:05] Bryan Murphy: Right. Okay. Because

[00:12:05] Liza Pierce: usually when you go to wa, Luca parking lot is Right, right, right, right.

[00:12:09] Liza Pierce: Although right now they have a new parking paid parking lot that they just open. It's like a multi-level parking lot. Fancy. So that's, that helps. But this Tiffany is in another place, not close to that multi-level parking lot, but they have their own empty space across the street where you can park. So Tiffany's, if you go search that, you know they're at very active on Instagram, you'll know, find out more about them.

[00:12:35] Liza Pierce: We mentioned Chef Sheldon and Tin Roof. Might as well say Tin Roof is another place that locals go. It is very close to the airport. What people do is either they stop by there and buy their food on the way to their place at the dump. Mm-hmm. You know, their lodging. Or they stop by there before they go home.

[00:12:57] Bryan Murphy: Right. Okay.

[00:12:58] Liza Pierce: They eat there. The last meal for on Maui in roof, it's in Dairy Road, so very, very close to the airport

[00:13:06] Bryan Murphy: kind. I across from the Costco

[00:13:08] Liza Pierce: a little bit. Yeah. Across, across from the Kinko's. You know, it's in the building where Kinko's and Pinatas is.

[00:13:15] Bryan Murphy: Okay, okay.

[00:13:15] Liza Pierce: Where Across from K former Kmart. Yeah.

[00:13:19] Liza Pierce: So alum in that side, you know, the other side of Costco.

[00:13:22] Stick Figure - Music: Okay. Yeah. Got it.

[00:13:24] Liza Pierce: Okay, so now you mentioned Costco. There is a food truck place there that's very popular across from the Costco gas station. It's called Plate Lunch, food Truck Pod. But some of the best food trucks and popular food trucks are actually there.

[00:13:47] Stick Figure - Music: Mm.

[00:13:47] Liza Pierce: And it's another stop of people coming in and out of Maui and local Koder too, just to mention some of the food trucks there. It's, you know, find Me Up, which is a Thai Food Havens hamburger is very popular. There's plantation days. So there's a lot. Mm-hmm. A lot of choices there. And it's a big food truck pod.

[00:14:09] Liza Pierce: It's very popular. So you know, you get a lot of food truck, a lot of local food there too. We're just in Hlu right now.

[00:14:16] Stick Figure - Music: I know I told you

[00:14:17] Liza Pierce: this is gonna be a lot of basic, oh, okay. Well maybe we could

[00:14:23] Bryan Murphy: do a part one and a part two. So.

[00:14:25] Liza Pierce: Okay. And there's a lot more, but I think they probably should be moving to another town.

[00:14:29] Liza Pierce: What do you say? Or should we stay in Central? No,

[00:14:32] Bryan Murphy: we can, we can keep, we can keep moving. We can keep on going

[00:14:34] Liza Pierce: Central. Do you

[00:14:34] Bryan Murphy: wanna just head up to Paia since we're like almost there? Or,

[00:14:38] Liza Pierce: okay. We can go to from here. They're this cool kind of boho town if people are not familiar with it.

[00:14:45] Stick Figure - Music: Yeah,

[00:14:45] Liza Pierce: it's, I'd like to think of it as, you know, it's another front street Laina for me.

[00:14:50] Stick Figure - Music: Mm-hmm.

[00:14:51] Liza Pierce: So it's a lot of small shops, a lot of surf shops. It's been there for a while. A little town, surf town. You know, they need a lot of love right now. You know, the business is there, need people to visit. So we'll focus on that. My friend who owned Maui Memories, it's a gift shop variety, you know, or variety like clothing and gift shop.

[00:15:13] Liza Pierce: Used to be in Lana and you know, her store burned down the earth during the Lahaina far and now he, she's in pa. And so just a little shout out on that.

[00:15:22] Bryan Murphy: I've, well, I, I've heard that a little bit from other people who had galleries. Patrick Parker, we've had on the epi on the podcast a few times. He had a gallery in Lena, just to give him a shout out.

[00:15:34] Bryan Murphy: I think he might have something in pa, but it, it, it, it seemed like a lot of people were kind of, at least in the arts area, like moving some other stuff to Paia.

[00:15:43] Liza Pierce: Yes. A lot of arts. That's trike. That's correct. A lot of arts, a lot of clothing store. And some established places to eat. So speaking of places to eat, let's start with Paia Fish Market.

[00:15:57] Liza Pierce: So they're very known. Paia fish market's been there, very, very popular. They're in the corner so you won't be able to miss them. Good fish food tacos. I know one lady from the mainland visiting here and her son doesn't eat fish at all, you know? No, no fish. Or they went to the eat fish market. They ordered this pasta with fish in it, like you know, it's a seafood pasta.

[00:16:23] Liza Pierce: And the little boy loved it. Just like finish the whole big bowl of this seafood pasta. So yeah, so ea fish market, and then another cute little place there is called a Toby's shave Eyes. And so, you know, you get shave ice. They have really good shave ice. What's actually good with them too is poke. They have pokey bowls.

[00:16:47] Liza Pierce: Most people are familiar now with poke, but those are the cute fish that you know not, are not cooked. Right,

[00:16:53] Stick Figure - Music: right, right.

[00:16:54] Liza Pierce: But it's a very popular dish here and Molly, you can use it for, eat it for snack or eat it for lunch. But Toby, they have connections with local fishermen and so they're poke. Are always super, super fresh.

[00:17:09] Liza Pierce: So you go there for chaise, you also go there for poke bowl, right?

[00:17:14] Bryan Murphy: What do you do first? Or what do you do after? Yeah,

[00:17:17] Liza Pierce: that's right. I, I would, I would do poke bowl first.

[00:17:21] Bryan Murphy: Yeah.

[00:17:21] Liza Pierce: And then you, you eat the. To shave as as your dessert and refreshment, right? Yeah. And then if you wanna do some sit down, you know, kind of like happy hour too.

[00:17:32] Liza Pierce: There's milagros across the street from where PA fish market is. Like they serve Mexican food. Okay. And they're also known big portion and good happy hour in there. And then they have that pizza place in there. Chef, I can't remember the name. Oh, there is Flatbread. Flatbread, that's right. Flatbread Pizza.

[00:17:56] Liza Pierce: They have really, really good pizza and they're also always gonna serving the community. There's a lot of fundraiser that's going on in there. So we had to recommend them to support them. But yeah, they have good pizza. So in Paia, if you're craving with pizza, go to that place. Right. So yeah, that's, so that's our paia.

[00:18:16] Stick Figure - Music: Awesome.

[00:18:16] Bryan Murphy: Okay.

[00:18:17] Liza Pierce: Yeah. Where do you wanna go next? Where, where should we travel next? Well,

[00:18:21] Bryan Murphy: as you were talking, I'm thinking, you know, there's so many great places, especially talking about Paia and a little bit further down the road, there's this iconic spot that I think we should probably talk about. And then we, we haven't even gotten to KeHE yet, and I wanna talk about Laina and.

[00:18:35] Bryan Murphy: Hear about that recovery and some of the spots open up in there, and then Ka Nepali as well. So there's so much to cover as we're into this. I, I think, you know, our eyes were a bigger than our stomach trying to get this all in one episode. So maybe let's just dive a little bit deeper into the North shore of Maui.

[00:18:51] Bryan Murphy: And then for those listening, we're gonna do a part two that's gonna get released. Be sure to follow for that so you get notified. But let's just keep digging into Northshore Maui a little bit longer.

[00:19:03] Liza Pierce: So, Northshore. When we're talking about Northshore, we cannot ignore the fact that one of the best restaurants here in Maui is in Northshore, and people are already probably thinking what I'm thinking.

[00:19:16] Liza Pierce: And that is Mama's Fish House. So

[00:19:20] Bryan Murphy: this is a spot, sorry, I'm a little bit, I'm a little bit jaded because this is a spot that I just haven't been able to. To get to, but anyways, I won't, I won't be salty about it.

[00:19:30] Liza Pierce: That's the reason for you to kind of make a plan and go there,

[00:19:33] Bryan Murphy: right? That's right. That's right.

[00:19:35] Bryan Murphy: It's

[00:19:35] Liza Pierce: very hard to get reservation. It's, I mean, right now, because we're not as busy as we used to be. We know with all that happened, with the behind the fire, people are just, you know, slowly coming back. Probably able to get reservation faster.

[00:19:51] Stick Figure - Music: Hmm. Okay. And

[00:19:52] Liza Pierce: also another tip is if you can get a reservation for dinner, go there for lunch.

[00:19:59] Liza Pierce: Hmm. Food is good as well, you know, and you'll see the ocean seeing scenery. Same atmosphere. It's just, you know, you go there for lunch instead of dinner. So that's a tip for people like to get there.

[00:20:11] Bryan Murphy: And maybe if I could just build on that tip, even though I'm salty, and I've never been to Mama's Fish House, but if you go at lunch, you're probably staying in KeHE.

[00:20:21] Bryan Murphy: You're probably staying in Ka the Poly. And that's a bit of a drive to make if you're going for dinner.

[00:20:27] Liza Pierce: Mm-hmm.

[00:20:28] Bryan Murphy: And. It might be better to, to try a lunch there.

[00:20:32] Liza Pierce: Yeah.

[00:20:33] Bryan Murphy: Rather than a, a long drive back into,

[00:20:35] Liza Pierce: yeah. Back in the town. So we've tried both and you know, we only go there for like super special occasions.

[00:20:42] Liza Pierce: Sure. We, my husband and I celebrated our 25th anniversary there.

[00:20:46] Stick Figure - Music: Awesome.

[00:20:47] Liza Pierce: And then my boss at one time was my birthday. My boss took me out there for lunch. Nice. And so I had both lunch experience and dinner experience. And so, okay, so it's like what you said, it's a little bit far away from where people usually stay from KI or the West side, Laka, Nepali.

[00:21:07] Liza Pierce: So think of ways what you can do when you go to that place and you explore paia. 'cause we're talking Paia North Shore. And then go there and there's also a lookout. That Lookout oh Kipa, where they can see people surfing. It's a very popular place to stop by and just enjoy the marvelous, you know, awesome scenery out there.

[00:21:28] Liza Pierce: And another thing that KO go there for is the turtle. The Hulu, or Kipa is known for the turtles, so it's very close to where Mama's fish house is and turtles come out and just kind of rest on the shore. And you can see them. Just don't go close.

[00:21:50] Stick Figure - Music: Yeah.

[00:21:51] Liza Pierce: Cannot touch them. That's a warning. Do not touch the turtles.

[00:21:54] Liza Pierce: Just enjoy them from far away. And there are usually people out there watching, but it's a fascinating scenery and a lot of people, you know from the mainland probably have not seen sea turtle, you know, whole new. And so when they come here, it's a special experience.

[00:22:11] Stick Figure - Music: Mm-hmm.

[00:22:12] Liza Pierce: So, yeah. So Mama's Fish House and Turtle and the scenery at Ho Kipa.

[00:22:17] Bryan Murphy: What did you get at Mama's Fish House? I know we talked about kind of the, the legend of Mama's Fish House, but like what, what would you recommend there?

[00:22:25] Liza Pierce: Well, I cannot exactly remember the name, but it's always the fish mahi something with like, you know, some, it's macadamia, not crusted. Mahi, I think is what it is.

[00:22:36] Liza Pierce: And also their curry. The seafood curry is what I usually would get there. You can go wrong with anything that they served there. You would have to prepare and make sure you, you do try their appetizer also. They got K, they have, you know. Probably have pokey or something similar in their appetizer. And then not to forget.

[00:23:02] Liza Pierce: They're popular. Pearl Black, Pearl Dessert. Have you heard about the

[00:23:07] Bryan Murphy: I've, I've seen It's a moose. Yeah, I've seen pictures. It's,

[00:23:10] Liza Pierce: yeah, it's,

[00:23:10] Bryan Murphy: I've only seen pictures of the place.

[00:23:14] Liza Pierce: It's so good. You know, when you go to Mama's Fish House, you have to order that dessert too. So what my husband I would do is he, I would order one dessert, that one, and then order another one.

[00:23:27] Liza Pierce: So we can try both. Just share. But yeah, so that's what I usually get there. Anything fish is good.

[00:23:35] Bryan Murphy: Okay. Okay. It's in the name. Got it. It's in the name.

[00:23:38] Liza Pierce: It's in the name. But yeah, my favorite is Macadamian Nut crusted. Okay. Yeah, mahi Mahi. So there's one more restaurant in North Shore that I would like to mention, and it's very popular.

[00:23:50] Liza Pierce: It's small, and I have to be honest, like you, I haven't been to this one. Okay? Like haven't been to Mama's Fish House. I haven't been to this place, but it's on my list. It's called Nka.

[00:24:03] Stick Figure - Music: Okay.

[00:24:03] Liza Pierce: Nka restaurant specializes in sushi sashimi, you know, but they have other dishes that they would serve and local know this spot.

[00:24:12] Liza Pierce: Not a lot of visitors know about them, although they're starting to become popular now because of word of mouth. But if you are on a search for a good sushi and sashimi, and you are on the North Shore. Make sure to do, make reservation. Noka is a small place, so you have to make your reservation. Make sure you will be able to go in.

[00:24:31] Bryan Murphy: Good to know.

[00:24:32] Liza Pierce: Yeah.

[00:24:34] Bryan Murphy: Alright, so that is North Shore.
