217_Which Hawaii Island Is Best for First-Time Visitors?

[00:00:00] Pick The Right Island
[00:00:00] Bryan Murphy: The best Hawaii trips don't happen by accident. They happen because someone took a few extra minutes before they booked anything and asked a simple question, which island actually fits the kind of trip we're hoping for? You spend hours researching the best beaches, hikes, restaurants, and none of it actually really matters if you've picked the wrong island for you and your family.
[00:00:20] Bryan Murphy: So before anything, let's figure out which island is actually right for your first trip.
[00:00:29] Bryan Murphy: Aloha and welcome to Hawaii's best of podcast, helping you plan an unforgettable Hawaii vacation with clear, practical guidance. I'm Brian Murphy, a certified Hawaii destination expert, and each week I break down what actually matters for your trip. Using local insight and firsthand experience, you can plan with confidence in travel with aloha.
[00:00:49] Skip Island Hopping
[00:00:49] Bryan Murphy: Alright, so if you get nothing else from today, just this one tip, I would highly encourage you to pick one island. Island hopping sounds amazing. It's exciting, and eventually it will be maybe on your return trip, but for your first trip, if you have a week or less, moving between islands costs you more than it really gives you.
[00:01:09] Bryan Murphy: And I know what some of you might be thinking. You know, I've waited years for this. I want to see everything. I totally get it. I've been there, but, but here's a little bit about what island hopping actually looks like. It's like half a day to, you know, you got the airport, you wait, you fly, you find your rental car, you check in somewhere new.
[00:01:28] Bryan Murphy: Usually check in isn't until like three or four anyhow, and you've burned nearly a full day. So one island done properly, beats three islands, done in a rush every single time. But if you're looking for like a sweet spot, like if you do want to do island hopping, then I would say at least six to seven days per island.
[00:01:48] Bryan Murphy: Basically, if you have a week per island, that really does work well. But if you only have a week, I would highly recommend. Especially if you're traveling with a family and this is your first time to just choose one island.
[00:02:01] Four Islands Overview
[00:02:01] Bryan Murphy: There are six islands open to visitors across the Hawaiian chain. Two of them, Molokai or Molokai and Lena are great, but I would say better safe for a return trip.
[00:02:14] Bryan Murphy: So for your first time, we're gonna be focusing on the four that really makes sense for most people. Oahu, Maui, Kauai. And the big island, and I try to make this as simple as possible by narrowing down for each island. One question to really ask yourself, and you can go into so much more in depth. So I've put some related episodes in the show notes below about things that are related to these islands, and even my full island hopping guide, if you want to go deeper into that.
[00:02:46] Oahu Easy And Flexible
[00:02:46] Bryan Murphy: So we're gonna start with the most popular, I would say, first time island for people. And that is Oahu. Oahu is the main island. So that's where Honolulu is Waikiki. But the main question I would want you to ask yourself if you're thinking about considering Oahu is do you want maximum options? Minimum stress.
[00:03:06] Bryan Murphy: If yes, then Oahu is definitely your island. It's where most of Hawaii's population lives, which works really in your favor. More people means there's more flight options, cheaper airfare usually, and more schedule flexibility. You don't, you don't even have to rent a car, especially if you're staying in O Waikiki.
[00:03:25] Bryan Murphy: You can do buses, shuttles. You can get around that way. Which is pretty rare for Hawaii and we're talking about some of the neighboring islands where it's not as robust as far as the public transportation. Waikiki gets, I kind of a bad rap for being touristy. It is touristy, but the beach is real. The food is legitimate.
[00:03:44] Bryan Murphy: If you know where to go, there are some local sponsor Waikiki still, and everything is really walkable and that matters a lot, especially that first day when you're, when you're jet lagging and arriving and just kidding. Acclimated to everything that's going on. Ahu is, is so much more than Waikiki. The North Shore is incredibly different world.
[00:04:02] Bryan Murphy: You got some country up there. East side is green and lush. Pearl Harbor is one of the most powerful historical sites. Anywhere, honestly. And I'm gonna, this Friday, this coming up, if you're listening to this episode, as it drops on Tuesday, this Friday coming up, I got a chance to sit down with the CEO of the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum and we talk about a new brand new activity attraction that has launched.
[00:04:30] Bryan Murphy: At Pearl Harbor. I can't wait for you to hear about that. I really enjoyed my conversation with him. But in addition to Pearl Harbor, the east side has some great hiking and beaches. Oahu works really well, I'd say for families, solo travelers, history lovers. There's actually a lot of cultural significance to the island of Oahu.
[00:04:50] Bryan Murphy: Again, it's so much more than just. Waikiki and I go into a lot more in depth into our Oahu travel guide episode that I'll link below and anyone watching their budget, Oahu is definitely, it's hard to beat. So in addition to the Oahu travel guide that's linked below, I also will link episode 1 32, which is the full guide for first timers to Oahu moving to the Island of Maui.
[00:05:15] Maui Classic Resort Vibes
[00:05:15] Bryan Murphy: The question I would ask myself is, do you want the classic Hawaii experience and willing to pay for it? If yes, the Maui is your island. Maui is expensive. It's the most expensive of the islands, but you get what you pay for. Maui is truly magical and incredible, and when most people picture Hawaii, they're picturing Maui from the resort beaches, humpback whales through usually December through early April-ish.
[00:05:43] Bryan Murphy: Yeah. Road Hana sunrise at Halala. It's worth the early, early wake up if you're gonna do halala. This is short tip. I would do that at the beginning of your trip, maybe day one, day two, because you're gonna be waking up early because of the time change anyhow. Especially if you're traveling from the continental, uh, us, you're gonna be waking up early, so you wanna, if you can do your halakah, sunrise, early Union reservations.
[00:06:08] Bryan Murphy: I'm not gonna get all to that right now. I've covered it below from past episodes. But Maui, it's expensive. Hotel rates average around from about mid five hundreds on up a night. That was in 2025. And with 2026 taxes stacking up close to 19% on top of that, you gotta, uh, factor that in because not a lot of times when you go to check rates that 18 90% isn't factored in on the advertised rates.
[00:06:37] Bryan Murphy: You really gotta look at that. And one more thing, especially if this is your first time to Maui, first time to Hawaii in general. I just want to take a moment real quick and just remind everyone as, but. 2023. A lot of us know that the, the historic town of La Jaa on the West side was destroyed, most of it by wildfires.
[00:06:57] Bryan Murphy: The resorts I felt reopened over there. Cotton Nepali is really close to La Jaa. All the resorts are back open and the island in general welcomes back to tourism. And, uh, it's, it is how a lot of people do make their living. In talking with a lot of locals there, a lot of local businesses there I've talked with definitely do welcome visitors, but just with respect, it's still obvious that there are spots of Laina that are closing off limits.
[00:07:22] Bryan Murphy: So it's just outta respect to the community and just those who call it home to respect those off limit areas.
[00:07:29] Kauai Unplug And Slow Down
[00:07:29] Bryan Murphy: Alright, let's go ahead and hop over to the oldest of the main islands and that is Ka. And the question I would ask myself if I was considering Ka would be, do you want your trip to feel like you've actually gotten away, like unplugged?
[00:07:41] Bryan Murphy: So if that's you, KA is definitely your island. Ka also has that classic Hawaii. Picture when you think of like the images of Hawaii and just the lush greenery and the scenery of Hawaii, HU definitely delivers that. Especially the Nepali coast. It has about 4,000 foot cliffs dropping straight into the ocean.
[00:08:04] Bryan Murphy: Why Maya Canyon is really cool. It's like, they call it the Grand Canyon and the Pacific. It's a big canyon and it, it's something that is definitely worth exploring. Another cool spot on Kauai is the Wa Lua River, and it takes you by kayak to waterfall. You can't reach any other way. The pace on Kui is slower.
[00:08:25] Bryan Murphy: The towns are small. There's really. No nightlife. So if you're traveling with a family, you're maybe for an older couple. Quai is a great island for you because it's just a bit, it's a bit slower. We love Kauai. We, I mean, we we're, we're not nightlife people really. We, we love going to bed early. Kauai is is just a great.
[00:08:44] Bryan Murphy: Small town feel across the entire island, which is pretty special. And if I'm being honest, Kui is the island people come back from completely changed. Not just like, oh, it's a great vacation, but more like, I've been thinking about it every day since like something happened on ka. You know, I was able to slow down, unplug.
[00:09:05] Bryan Murphy: Really, if you take time to go with the pace of any island that you visit, KA especially. It'll just, you know, you'll be thinking more deeply about your life in a way that you didn't expect. But side note, it does rain quite a bit, especially on the North Shore. So if you're staying South Shore, like Poipu area would recommend that a lot of the resorts are in poi po.
[00:09:28] Bryan Murphy: It's a bit sunnier and drier, but you just wanna be aware. That you, you'll probably will get some rain. Rain usually doesn't last all day in Hawaii, but um, off and on is expected. You know, you just bring a hoodie or just a umbrella, you'll, you'll be fine.
[00:09:43] Big Island Wild Landscapes
[00:09:43] Bryan Murphy: Alright, so let's go to the youngest island now, and that is the big island.
[00:09:47] Bryan Murphy: This is probably my girls. We have three girls, my wife and I. This is probably their newest favorite island. So the question I would ask myself considering. Visiting the big island would be, do you want something that genuinely surprises you? So if that gets you excited, the big island is your island. It's, it's great for exploring.
[00:10:06] Bryan Murphy: It's larger than all the other islands combined, and the range of landscape is almost is hard to believe. You got black sand beaches, tropical rainforest, snow. Active lava fields, I'm sure you've seen that quite a bit in 2026. Kiela is still erupting and you can watch it safely from the designated lookouts at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
[00:10:28] Bryan Murphy: It's as incredible as it sounds. It's still erupting, but it's not always erupting. So that's one thing just to be aware of. It's always important and a must to check current conditions of volcanoes. National Park, whenever you're visiting. Some of the other highlights that you can do on the big island.
[00:10:44] Bryan Murphy: You can swim with man Rays during night dive, like a snorkel adventure off the Kona coast. That's something that is unique to any of the o other islands. Stargazing from Mona and Amazing waterfalls near Hilo and Hilos on the east side of the island. Most people stay on the West side Kona coast area, but there are some places to stay in Hilo, but Hilo is definitely worth exploring.
[00:11:10] Book Cars And Permits
[00:11:10] Bryan Murphy: When we visited the big island last time, the thing that kind of tripped us up was the rental car. 'cause rental rental cars during busy season. We happen to visit during Christmas break. Yeah, rental cars can definitely sell out, so that's probably the. The most important practical point for visiting Big Island is book your rent a car the same day you book your flights like not next week, like I'll get around to it and check the rates.
[00:11:36] Bryan Murphy: The big island runs outta cars during busy periods, and people have landed in a Kona with really nowhere to go because they waited too long. So don't beat that person. You have to rent a car on Big Island. If you plan on doing anything. There really isn't much of a public transportation, so renting a car.
[00:11:54] Bryan Murphy: When you visit the big island is, is definitely key. Especially, let me back up a little bit on Maui and on Kauai as well. You definitely do want to rent a car. So as you're still deciding maybe what island, the couple things to book immediately would be whatever island that you've chosen. Two things need to happen the same week.
[00:12:14] Bryan Murphy: You book flight, so first year, one non-negotiable reservation. Every island has an economic. Experience that sells out way earlier than you expect. For example, on Maui Halala Sunrise talked about that a little bit ago. It requires permits for the sunrise, not sunset, but for sunrise, and those open 60 days out and they sell out within minutes.
[00:12:35] Bryan Murphy: Hours. So set calendar, reminder a link below where you can get those passes. On Oahu, you have Han Bay reservations that open at exactly 7:00 AM. Hawaii time, two days before the day you want to go. So not 7 0 2, not 7:00 AM slots are gone within literally minutes. So set an alarm for that and you'll be good to go.
[00:12:58] Bryan Murphy: On KA Hawaii, Haena State Park. The Nepali Coast Trailhead requires. Advanced reservations, so don't assume that you'll just be able to show up and go, and I believe now the lighthouse up there, the Daniel Kay in Noe Lighthouse or the Kilo Waya Lighthouse requires advanced reservations as well. The second thing that you'll want to do after you book your flights is if you're going to Maui, especially, or any island, you want to verify your accommodation before you pay a deposit.
[00:13:27] Bryan Murphy: Talking more about like Airbnb, short-term rental types of things, because Maui has begun phasing out thousands of short-term rentals in 2026. So make sure your property has a valid TAT and GET license number through the Hawaii Tax online system if you are staying in a vetted, verified spot, those license numbers should be really easy to get.
[00:13:52] Bryan Murphy: An unlicensed property can get shut down. Mid-day doesn't matter. And in episode 1 36, I cover exactly what to look for and how to look for that. So.
[00:14:02] Final Island Recap
[00:14:02] Bryan Murphy: Which island's yours? Which one are you gonna do if you want? Ease, variety, best value. Oahu is definitely your pick. Classic resort experience, iconic scenery.
[00:14:12] Bryan Murphy: You want Maui. Just budget realistically and spin locally as as best you can. If you want to unplug, get outside. Slow down Kui. Be sure to pack for rain something. Unlike anywhere else in the world, the big island is gonna deliver. Just make sure you book that car today.
[00:14:30] Costs Timing And Help
[00:14:30] Bryan Murphy: And one last thing. Hawaii in 2026 costs more than it used to taxes near 90%.
[00:14:37] Bryan Murphy: As I mentioned, you have many places now have parked fees, reservations. Those add up and if you have flexibility on timing of Winnie visit. Late April through May or September through early November, you're usually gonna find the better prices. That's what's called shoulder season and episode 1 77. If you're thinking about September, it's one of our favorite months.
[00:14:56] Bryan Murphy: Our favorite month is, is actually October, but September is a close second episode 1 77. Talk a little bit about what Hawaii in September is like, and if all this is still overwhelming, I totally get it. It might be, I do offer one-on-one consultations where you and I. Sit together virtually and you get to ask any of your questions.
[00:15:17] Bryan Murphy: We get to look at your itinerary. There's also packages where I can build your itinerary or rebuild it together and see what's gonna be best for you. Your family, your group, whomever is going to Hawaii, so you can find the link to book a one-on-one consultation with me in the show notes below. But there's really no wrong answers here.
[00:15:37] Bryan Murphy: Every one of these islands is incredible. It will give you something that you weren't expecting. That's really kind of the whole point. Pick your island, book your car, lock in that one reservation, get your accommodations, and go, and you're gonna be fine. You're gonna make Hawaii happen. It's gonna be epic.
[00:15:53] Bryan Murphy: You're gonna make the memories, you're gonna take the pictures, and you're gonna want to come back. You're gonna be booking your next flight, your next trip on your way back home.
[00:16:01] Wrap Up And Credits
