[00:00:00] Cheapest Windows Revealed
[00:00:00] Bryan Murphy: Hawaii has a reputation for being expensive. Obviously that is very true, but there are two windows every single year where the math kind of flips in your favor. Fewer crowds, lower prices, still great weather, but most people miss them completely. So today we're going to talk about exactly when those are.
[00:00:24] Bryan Murphy: Loha and welcome to Hawaii's Best. I'm Brian Murphy, Hawaii, destination expert and your personal guide to planning an unforgettable trip to Hawaii. Today I'm answering one of the most practical questions you can ask before you book, and that's really when is the cheapest time to visit Hawaii? And I'm not gonna drag you along.
[00:00:42] Bryan Murphy: I'm, I wanna give you the short answer right here, right up front. And that is mid-April through early June, and then again later on in the year, September to about mid-December. Before the holiday Christmas rush, but the sweet spot within those windows are late April into May, and then September through October, and then also early November is still pretty solid.
[00:01:06] Bryan Murphy: And that's really what it comes down to.
[00:01:07] Why Prices Fluctuate
[00:01:07] Bryan Murphy: So why do these windows work and why do prices fluctuate during these time? That really comes down to supply and demand. So when kids are outta school, when families are traveling for summer and when everyone's heading to the islands for holidays. Prices go up because there's more demand, obviously.
[00:01:24] Bryan Murphy: But summer gets expensive. Christmas and New Year's gets expensive. Thanksgiving gets expensive and spring break as well. But when you hit those in-between windows, calling them shoulder season right after spring break, before summer ramps up, or after Labor Day when the big rush fades. That's where Hawaii breathes a little bit on price and on crowds.
[00:01:49] Weather Myths and Microclimates
[00:01:49] Bryan Murphy: I think what surprises a lot of people is that cheaper doesn't necessarily mean worse weather. Now, Hawaii has been hidden in some bad weather, um, all part of, well, early April, and then, um, a lot of March. March is, uh, not a great month to go if you can avoid it, but it's hit and miss and this. March, 2026, there was a lot of rain, a lot of catastrophic rain and floods.
[00:02:16] Bryan Murphy: Hawaii really only has like two broad seasons drier, and that's from May to October and wetter from November to April-ish. But the weather is incredibly localized. So it depends on the side of the island. Depends on the island you're visiting because of microclimate. So even when one area might get raining, another spot on the island can be completely sunny and dry and you're not trading your whole trip for gray skies just because you're skipping peak July.
[00:02:46] Bryan Murphy: So.
[00:02:46] Best Value Months
[00:02:46] Bryan Murphy: My simple take on all of this is that May is the best spring value month to visit, and September is the best fall value month, and I think closely behind October. October is one of our favorite months, actually. May gets you past that spring break. Crowd and you have a a little bit higher of a guarantee of drier weather before summer prices kick in and September can give you less crowds.
[00:03:13] Bryan Murphy: You got warm ocean temps from the summer and noticeably a more relaxed vibe. And I actually did a full episode on why September is the best. To visit. You can go back and listen to that one after this, and September happens to be my birthday month. So how about that?
[00:03:28] Weeks to Avoid
[00:03:28] Bryan Murphy: But so I wanna talk about some weeks to avoid, because shoulder season doesn't mean every week inside these ranges that I talked about earlier is a deal.
[00:03:37] Bryan Murphy: Memorial Day can push prices up even inside that late May window. November is great just. Make sure you leave before Thanksgiving week in September through October overlaps with Hawaii's hurricane season. So that's something to be aware of, but direct hits are rare, but October can bring rougher ocean conditions than September for snorkeling and boat tours.
[00:04:02] Bryan Murphy: So September really gets an edge if those are on your list of must dos. Real quick about spring break because spring break just happened. Really, if the goal is to save money, spring break isn't the week you wanna visit. Late March through mid-April, prices do spike, crowd spike and availability on popular attractions starts to fade and also supply for car rentals.
[00:04:26] Bryan Murphy: I just wanna say as I'm thinking about it, because.
[00:04:30] If You Must Travel Peak
[00:04:30] Bryan Murphy: I know that maybe spring break or summer or Christmas break, those are the only chance that you have to visit. Right now, we're kind of battling that as a family. Now, ally and I and my wife, we do visit in some of these shoulder months for her and I to get away, but.
[00:04:46] Bryan Murphy: For a family, because we do have a couple teenagers. They're in sports. We have an older elementary age kid. We're on more of a traditional schedule now, so I totally get, you know, it is gonna be more expensive. I've done episodes on how to budget. If you are visiting during those peak seasons, the quicker visit, you just need to identify what is a must do and what it would be like a, a nice do.
[00:05:09] Bryan Murphy: So if that feels a little overwhelming and you're still in the planning stage and feeling just frustrated and just trying to figure out what to do, especially if you're traveling in summer and it's gonna be packed and it's gonna be a little bit more expensive than these times of years that I'm talking about.
[00:05:23] Trip Planning Consultations
[00:05:23] Bryan Murphy: Whether that's figuring out which island of visit, building your itinerary, or just making sure you're not making expensive mistakes before you leave home. I do one-on-one consultations and I, I can review your trip, plan your itinerary. That's an option that I, I do, and I can also, we can meet together one-on-one via Zoom.
[00:05:42] Bryan Murphy: And we can build your itinerary together. That's also another option. So if that is you and you're interested in that, I would love to meet you, talk to you about Hawaii, answer all your questions and look over your itinerary together. You can go to the show notes below and find that link to book a one-on-one session.
[00:05:58] Bryan Murphy: If you can book within those months and specifically that window that I mentioned. You do have a higher chance of getting better rates, more availability on cars, and also less crowds, which is great too.
[00:06:15] Airline Merger App Changes
[00:06:15] Bryan Murphy: Before I let you go, I do have a couple Hawaii travel news that I, I want to let you know that is, is happening currently.
[00:06:22] Bryan Murphy: First, and I'm gonna be honest with you, I have a lot of feelings about the Hawaiian and Alaska merger. I won't get into 'em here, but I've had my frustrations with it firsthand. So if you're flying Hawaiian or Alaska around late April, which is like right now, you want to pay attention because Alaska just announced a major integration milestone, and I'll call it what it is.
[00:06:42] Bryan Murphy: It's more of a takeover than a merger, at least from what I'm seeing. So let's be real. I mean, well, I'm just glad that Hawaiian Airlines is still around right now, but the Hawaiian Airlines app is going away, so it's being phased out around April 21st and starting April 22nd, you should be able to use the new unified Hawaiian Alaskan.
[00:07:07] Bryan Murphy: So if that's you, if that's, if you're planning, if you're visiting soon and you do use Hawaiian Airlines, the app for check-in and all that good stuff, double check your app, double check your check-in flow, and your trip notifications as well before your travel date. Getting caught off guard at the airport is really the last thing you want.
[00:07:24] Bryan Murphy: So, or the night before. So I just wanna give you a heads up. Go ahead and check that out in order to get integrated with the new app.
[00:07:31] Reservations and Closures
[00:07:31] Bryan Murphy: The second thing I want to put in front of you is that Hawaii is much more of a reservation based destination than a lot of first time visitors. I think realize. So talked about this quite a bit on the podcast, specifically Diamondhead in State Park on Hawaii.
[00:07:50] Bryan Murphy: Why in APA on Maui and Halala Sunrise on Maui all require advanced reservations? And as of April, 2026, there are. Active weather related closures. For example, HANA had a notice posted this past weekend and El Valley also had closures through April 26th. So the takeaway is, don't assume you can just show up to Hawaii's most popular sites anymore.
[00:08:17] Bryan Murphy: Double check official. Alerts before you go, links below in the show notes for your convenience.
[00:08:24] Booking Tips and Midweek Flights
[00:08:24] Bryan Murphy: Here's the thing to keep in mind when you're booking start, if you can, if you have the flexibility of when you go start with late April through May for spring, if you want to go during this time of year, if you do have the luxury of.
[00:08:37] Bryan Murphy: Choosing when you go to Hawaii, maybe you have the luxury of picking what day you travel and even wanna save even more money. I would highly recommend flying midweek, if you can think. Tuesdays and Wednesdays, they tend to be a softer on price. I like to fly on one of those days. We've flown both on on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and have gotten a a little bit cheaper of a fair and compared.
[00:08:58] Bryan Murphy: Total trip cost, not just airfare. So think hotel rates, car rental, uh, and activities. They can swing the math more than the flight does. Those can add up really quick.
