228_Maui vs Big Island- Which Hawaii Island Fits You Best
[00:00:00] Maui vs Big Island
[00:00:00] Bryan Murphy: You've got your dates locked in, time off has been approved, and you're dreaming about visiting Hawaii for as long as you can remember. And now you're trying to answer one of the questions that can really make or break your whole vacation. Which island, specifically? Maui or Big Island. And today, I'm gonna help you answer that one question directly because these two islands are completely different experiences, and the right one depends entirely on you and who you're traveling with.
[00:00:26] Bryan Murphy: And the experience you're hoping to create in the islands.
[00:00:34] Bryan Murphy: Loha, and welcome to Hawaii's Best. I'm Brian Murphy, Hawaii, destination expert, and your personal guide to planning an unforgettable trip to Hawaii.
[00:00:43] Postcard Maui Vibes
[00:00:43] Bryan Murphy: Alright, so big picture first, Maui. What I call like this, the postcard, white sand beach luxury resorts, whale watching in the winter. The sunrise over halala.
[00:00:55] Bryan Murphy: It's polished, centralized, and it absolutely delivers on the quote, classic Hawaiian vacation.
[00:01:01] Big Island Frontier
[00:01:01] Bryan Murphy: The big island is kinda like the frontier. It's uh. Geological wonder in that it literally is, is still being developed. Hence all the activity with the volcanoes. There's five volcanoes that form that island two are still active today, and it contains 63% of the entire state's landmass, and it's five times the size of Maui.
[00:01:22] Bryan Murphy: The stat that really still blows my mind today about the Big Island is that it hosts 11 of the world's 13 climate zones. So yeah, you can drive from your sunny Kona beach resort to snow at the summit of Mon Kea. The tallest mountain on earth measured from its ocean floor base, and then you can go to the lush rainforest in Hilo, all in about 90 minutes to about two hours.
[00:01:46] Bryan Murphy: That's really not. An island, it's kinda like a mini continent. I definitely have experienced both islands, Maui and Big Island, formerly called Hawaii Island. Now it's called technically Hawaii, which is really confusing. A lot of locals are still going by Big Island or Hawaii Island, so Big Island is definitely still appropriate and used.
[00:02:06] Bryan Murphy: But lemme take insight each one. Because they're completely different now. My wife and I, we love Maui. I love just traveling with my wife. We've been to Oahu probably the most, as far as just like my wife and I going, but we love visiting Maui as well.
[00:02:20] Lahaina Story Update
[00:02:20] Bryan Murphy: Just her and I, and one of the stories that still, I still, I, I try not to live much with regret, but this is one I do regret.
[00:02:28] Bryan Murphy: We were driving through Lana, this is a few years ago, heading towards Front Street. And we passed the Banyan tree. I looked out and it was like, yeah, the traffic, it's just, let's just skip it today. It feels too busy. Let's, we just kept driving. I completely regret that moment every time I, I think about it because, you know, o obviously just one or two years later after that, the wildfires destroyed Lana and that town was.
[00:02:54] Bryan Murphy: Destroyed overnight. But here's the thing, what's really encouraging currently about lahane as it stands in 2026, it's recovering slowly, steadily. Some restaurants have reopened. The harbor is undergoing a $30 million rebuild, expected to finish later this year, which means probably. In, um, two to five years Hawaii time.
[00:03:14] Bryan Murphy: So the, uh, the historic front street, the core is still under reconstruction. Uh, reaming eat at locally owned restaurants. Support Maui made businesses as best you can, but beyond Lana, Maui is still incredible. Maui is is more than Lana. Even though Lana was so, such a central heartbeat of Maui, there's still so much beauty on the island.
[00:03:38] Bryan Murphy: Is in the south and cotton Nepali is on the west. Just past Laa and th those are two world-class resort areas.
[00:03:46] Why Choose Maui
[00:03:46] Bryan Murphy: So first trip to Hawaii honeymoon. You want everything with an easy reach. Maui is definitely your island. Most resorts are within 45 minutes of the airport. Now, it depends, you know, traffic in Hawaii always depends, but especially you headed out to the west side, there's really only one road in, one road out.
[00:04:04] Bryan Murphy: And if there's traffic, you know, that could be. Longer. But a quick, uh, practical note is that the Halala Sunrise requires a reservation. I know I've talked about this before, but it still goes with saying it's a $1 per vehicle registration. That's through recreation.gov plus a $30 park entrance fee. Now you can book these up to 60 days in advance and uh, they go fast.
[00:04:27] Bryan Murphy: They go really fast, like within like the minute, two minutes. So everything else you need to know before visiting Maui, I've included an episode of 1 55, only that below. And just, you know, as I'm getting into this, I've included a free guide that goes into so much more depth than I have time for on this episode.
[00:04:45] Bryan Murphy: And you can find that in the. First link in the show notes below the complete guide to comparing Maui to the big island. That also links out to a guide on the blog that I did so, so much information for you to go ahead and make an educated decision on which is best for you.
[00:05:01] Big Island Family Trip
[00:05:01] Bryan Murphy: But now moving on to the big island, I have to tell you a little bit about we visited.
[00:05:05] Bryan Murphy: Big Island last time was, it was during Christmas time and we visited over the holidays staying at the, you know, Kona side like most people do when they visit the big island. And we had a few nights at the West Una, and it was one of the best family trips I think we've had in a long time. It wasn't crowded.
[00:05:21] Bryan Murphy: Our girls, I, I've told you before, but if you first time listening, we have three girls and they absolutely loved it. They asked when they were going back all the time. And, and what's funny is, you know, they, what they talk about most is not the volcano. Because, uh, we got kind of skunk, we got plumes of smoke and that's one thing you just gotta be aware of.
[00:05:40] Bryan Murphy: If you go make your way all the way over to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, you might just get some plumes of smoke. And that is Mother Nature. It is going crazy now with all the different episodes and eruptions, but at the time, you know, volcanoes National Park wasn't, they weren't, you know, excited about that.
[00:05:57] Bryan Murphy: The snorkeling, what it was was the cat colony. Near the West End resort. There's, there's this group of feral cats that have made this area home around West Una. And our girls were completely just, you know, giving all the cats a name. And I think that right there kind of tells you something about the big islands.
[00:06:18] Bryan Murphy: It's a little quirky. Even the unexpected moments become some of the best memories.
[00:06:24] Volcano Update Tips
[00:06:24] Bryan Murphy: Since I gave you a little update about 2026 on Maui, there's a live update. If you've been following the Hawaii Travel News, uh, section on our blog, as of April 27th, 2026, kilo Waya has been erupting episodically. That means off and on since December 23rd, 2024, which is unheard of.
[00:06:42] Bryan Murphy: The most recent episode just ended four days ago with lava fountains reaching over 900 feet and the US gs. Is forecasting the next episode between May 2nd and May 6th. So if you're heading to the big island soon, you may witness one of the most spectacular natural events on the entire planet. But just know with lava comes a lot of people.
[00:07:05] Bryan Murphy: A lot of people are gonna want to go to the national park. So if you want to see lava, you definitely want to check the National Parks, uh, website about current conditions. And even on an, like a quote off day when we went, when we didn't see lava, it was still a matter of circling the parking lot near the visitor center to try to find a spot to park.
[00:07:26] Bryan Murphy: So it does get really busy, especially when there is active lava.
[00:07:31] Beyond Volcano Kona Hilo
[00:07:31] Bryan Murphy: Happened, but beyond the volcano, the koala coast has luxury resorts carved into black lava fields. It's dramatic and it's stunning. Why may I not to be confused with Waimea Canyon on Kauai is in the upcountry and it feels nothing like what most people picture when they think about Hawaii.
[00:07:49] Bryan Murphy: It has cool temperatures, ranching countries, incredible farm to. Food. And then you got Hilo on the east side and it's, and it's considered the rainiest town in all of the United States. So it, it gets over some 270 rain days a year. But don't let that screw you because showers last, you know, 20 minutes and, and it clears and you get a rainbow.
[00:08:12] Bryan Murphy: So it's totally worth it. But the waterfalls, also the botanical gardens, the local food scene in Hilo, it's amazing. We like pineapples. I think it's called pineapples. We love that spot. But generally, one of the most underrated experiences. In the state also two important updates. Rainbow Falls and Anupa Bay State Park now charge non-resident entry fee, and that is $5 per person, $10 per vehicle.
[00:08:37] Bryan Murphy: A quick logistics tip, you need to rent a car, and I would say on Maui as well. Definitely you wanna rent a car. Big Island is big. It's huge. It's enormous. It took us about two hours. We took our time getting over from Kona to Hawaii, volcanos it took, it took us about two hours, but for a full rundown of some of our favorite top five experiences to do on the Big Island.
[00:08:58] Bryan Murphy: Actually, it was just last episode. I'm gonna link that below. You can listen to that after this episode.
[00:09:04] Head to Head Breakdown
[00:09:04] Bryan Murphy: But I wanna give you a quick head-to-head comparison. Beaches, Maui wins for that classic white sand beach. Big island wins for water clarity and just unique beaches. You have a green sand beach at Papa K.
[00:09:17] Bryan Murphy: You got dramatic black sand beaches. Budget, definitely the big island wins and it runs about. 20% cheaper when compared to Maui, and I can definitely vouch for that. We, I've had that experience for both islands in 2026. You wanna budget for Hawaii's new 18? Yes. 18% total hotel tax. So on a 300. Dollar room, you pay not paying a $300 room, but, but for the math, if you're paying a $300 room per night, that's roughly $50 a night in taxes alone for crowds.
[00:09:51] Bryan Murphy: Maui is more crowded. It's just denser. The big island gives you more room to breathe. Snorkeling, it's, you got Molokini, which is great snorkeling, but like off the shore, snorkeling. I think the. Big islands, Rocky, uh, volcanic coastline keeps things dramatically clear. And the man ray night snorkel on the big island is one of the most unforgettable things that you can do in all of Hawaii.
[00:10:15] Bryan Murphy: So look into that. Talked a little bit about that in the last episode.
[00:10:18] Which Island Fits
[00:10:18] Bryan Murphy: So the big question is. Which island is right for you? You want to go to Maui If this is your first trip, if you want the classic Hawaii experience, if you're honeymooning or you want to do Haleakala and the road to Hana's on your bucket list, definitely go to Maui.
[00:10:36] Bryan Murphy: I would say go to the big island. If you've done Maui and want something completely different, if or if you've been to Ahu or you've been to Kui, definitely put. Big island next on your list. And if you want some adventure, just raw Hawaii, if you're working on a tighter budget, which I think a lot of us are, or if you want Hawaii to feel real and unpackaged, I would highly recommend the big island.
[00:11:00] Do Both Island Hop
[00:11:00] Bryan Murphy: If you have the budget, do both. They definitely compliment each other in a way that makes for a complete Hawaii trip. I did a whole episode about island hopping in Hawaii. I'll link that below. But basically. If you have about two weeks, I would say 10 days minimum, but if you have at least two weeks, definitely doing two islands is great.
[00:11:23] Bryan Murphy: So basically, ideally you're doing one week per island, but if you only have the time to do 10 or 12 days, I would personally do like four days on the big island and then the rest on Mau. So that's my quick comparison for Maui versus the Big Island.
[00:11:39] Wrap Up Resources
[00:11:39] Bryan Murphy: For a full in-depth guide, be sure to go to the first link in the show notes below and get that free guide for you.
[00:11:45] Bryan Murphy: But, uh, I hope this helps you just be able to make an educated guess for where to go to Hawaii next. If you're heading to Maui, start with episode 1 55, link below Big Island. Go with episode 2, 2 7 as your next listen. But if you're still figuring out which island to visit for your first time, that'll be episode two 17, linked below as well.
[00:12:10] Bryan Murphy: And if all this is like just dude, slow down a little bit. This is all too much.
[00:12:15] Consultations Farewell
[00:12:15] Bryan Murphy: I do offer one-on-one consultations where you and I, we sit down together via Zoom. You can ask me. All the questions you want, we can build an itinerary together.
