[00:00:00] Skip More Enjoy More

[00:00:00] Bryan Murphy: A great Hawaii trip is not just about doing more. Sometimes it's about knowing what to skip, what to cut out. It's knowing when a place is closed for a reason. It's knowing when to slow down. It's knowing that the best memories from your trip may not be the thing that you planned six months ago because some of the best Hawaii travel mistakes don't show up on a checklist, but they can make a big difference on how your trip actually feels.

[00:00:29] Part Two Setup

[00:00:29] Bryan Murphy: Loha and welcome to Hawaii's Best. I'm Brian Murphy, Hawaii, destination expert and your personal guide to planning an unforgettable trip to Hawaii. Today is part two of my conversation with Jordan and Erica from the Hawaii Vacation Guide, and so if you miss part one, I definitely would recommend going back and listening to that episode first.

[00:00:49] Bryan Murphy: Well, you don't necessarily have to. You can queue it up, listen to it after this one, but essentially in part one, we talked about some of the biggest planning budget and safety mistakes that a lot of people make when visiting and planning for Hawaii. Things like trusting AI with your full itinerary or trying to visit too many.

[00:01:08] Bryan Murphy: Islands on one trip, booking flights before actually checking hotel rates, underestimating drive times, and not taking the ocean. Safety, seriously. So those are just some of the topics that we covered in part one, but today we're continuing that conversation with the mistakes that are a little bit more about how you experience Hawaii once you are there.

[00:01:29] Bryan Murphy: We're talking about trespassing, respecting science, and closed areas, some of the nuances in the Hawaiian culture, how to experience Hawaiian culture in a meaningful way that can actually give back why reservations matter more than ever, and why your trip does not need to. A look like someone else's vacation online.

[00:01:49] Bryan Murphy: Just forgetting all about Instagram when you're in Hawaii. And I think really that last one is super important because the best trip is not always the busiest trip. It's not always the most impressive itinerary. A lot of times it's the trip that gives you, I'd say, you know enough room to actually enjoy where you are in case you miss part one.

[00:02:10] Bryan Murphy: Jordan and Erica are the creators behind the Hawaii Vacation Guide, one of the most trusted Hawaii travel planning resources online. And they've lived on ahu, they've lived on Maui and now travel back as. Often as they can with family, as they continue creating practical Hawaii travel guides, YouTube videos, itineraries and planning resources.

[00:02:32] Bryan Murphy: And maybe the elephant in the room is, well, doesn't Hawaii's best do a lot of these things? And yeah. Yeah, I do create a lot of Hawaii travel guides, itineraries, planning resources. I don't have a YouTube channel where I do video like they, if you want to get like the best Hawaii travel YouTube channel is definitely their channel.

[00:02:49] Bryan Murphy: Definitely check them out. But the reason I wanted to bring them on, because I trust them. And I really love their heart behind the content they create because a lot of creators out there just creating it for the click. They're creating it for the affiliates or whatever the case is. Not to throw shade at anyone's direction, but I really resonate with how.

[00:03:10] Bryan Murphy: Jordan and Erica have positioned themselves in sharing Hawaii and the best ofs and all that good stuff that comes with planning a trip to Hawaii. So with that, let's go ahead and get back into my conversation and into part two with Jordan and Erica from the Hawaii vacation guy.

[00:03:34] Respect Closed Places

[00:03:34] Bryan Murphy: Moving on to bucket number four, cultural and respect. Mistakes.

[00:03:39] No Trespassing Lessons

[00:03:39] Bryan Murphy: Mistake number 11, trespassing to get to spots like we mentioned earlier, I think you mentioned Jordan, red Sand Beach. Uh, there's Queen Bath on uae, stairway to Heaven, Oahu. Some of these are unintentional, some of them, most of them are intentional.

[00:03:55] Bryan Murphy: These places are you, and we can list a whole list of like places not to go to, but there's a fine line of like saying what those places are. You wanna. In advertising it. The biggest thing is like some places are closed, some places, some of these places are dangerous. Some are, most of, are, are on private property, like Red Sand Beach.

[00:04:14] Bryan Murphy: I happened to see an itinerary, I think it was just, just last week, this itinerary and part of their preview had Red Sand Beach. And I like you lived on Maui. Don't you know, like, don't you know about like not to go to ZA and Beach? It's weird. RIS and beach. It, you, you cross private property. It's also considered to be a, a sacred spot.

[00:04:34] Bryan Murphy: It's obvious. So if you go out. You know, you're on a hike or whatever and you see signs like kapu or keep out, like respect that. One of the biggest things you, you probably guys get it also is like stairway to heaven. There's been a lot of legislation with trying to have managed access to it, but right now it is still.

[00:04:52] Bryan Murphy: Close, it's off limits, and people say, well, you could go to the back way. That hike is gnarly in itself, but as soon as you, we, we have on the organization that manages that area. Oh, wow. As soon as you step onto the platform, you've, you've crossed private property.

[00:05:09] Erica - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: I really, I feel like a lot of your listeners and our viewers, they're.

[00:05:14] Erica - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: Not going to these places that they know are off limits. Right? Yeah. 'cause they're just very conscientious people. But the place I see it happen a lot and that I see like people get caught up. Into it is when you, let's say you finish a hike or you are on a hike and you see a waterfall and you see a sign that says like, keep out.

[00:05:32] Erica - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: No trespassing. Oh, okay. Property. But you see 30 people walking past it, you are like, yeah, I'm just gonna go with them too. You know? And that is where we see people putting themselves into dangerous or just not. Legal situation

[00:05:48] Jordan - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: and for first time visitor, you won't know if it's bad to go to or not, or even trespassing.

[00:05:52] Jordan - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: But I mean, AWA Hawaii is very good about having signs up. Yeah, there'll be lots of signs saying, yeah, no trespassing. Or

[00:05:57] Erica - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: keep out.

[00:05:57] Jordan - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: Keep out danger. They'll even tell you why. Yeah. You know it flash floods. Yeah. Or rocks falling from waterfalls. Yeah. So it's really just abide by those signs. Even if you see 30 people walk by it just, you don't have to follow the crowd.

[00:06:08] Erica - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: Yeah.

[00:06:09] Bryan Murphy: Some of them even have like as morbid as it sounds like a death count, like people who have lost their lives. Yeah.

[00:06:13] Jordan - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: Yeah. Queens

[00:06:14] Bryan Murphy: Bath by Tasse,

[00:06:15] Jordan - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: queen Bath has that. Yeah. Quite a few do. Yeah, you're right.

[00:06:18] Bryan Murphy: All right.

[00:06:18] Experience Hawaiian Culture

[00:06:18] Bryan Murphy: Mistake number 12, not experiencing the culture.

[00:06:22] Jordan - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: We like to always put this in our videos, in our articles itself.

[00:06:25] Jordan - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: Lots of great ways to, it's just Hawaii is such a unique. Place. It was a kingdom of Hawaii.

[00:06:30] Bryan Murphy: Yeah.

[00:06:30] Jordan - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: Hawaiians have a rich history. Pearl Harbor, a lot of great American history too. So, you know, it's just fun way to enhance your trip. And you can do fun stuff too, like go out on with a local guided tour. You talk about talking to locals, like it's a great way to like really meet somebody's, go on a guided tour.

[00:06:46] Jordan - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: They share their life story, they share all this like local pigeon and you know, hidden gems around the islands. And they know what to share. And that's a cultural experience in itself. Right? And then, you know, go on an outrigger canoe ride. Go to one of the many great museums on the island. I know a lot of people wanna spend all the day at museums, but like the Bishop Museum is very interactive, especially for kids.

[00:07:06] Jordan - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: It's a lot of fun. Like the Disney movie, like Moana, like, I mean, it's like you go there and like learn all about the Polynesian explorers. So there's a lot of ways to do culture and have it fun and engaging for everybody. Yeah. So don't, don't, you know, the mistake is not to look into stuff like that

[00:07:20] Erica - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: because it just adds so much to your enjoyment and of the trip and your memories.

[00:07:25] Jordan - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: Mm-hmm. Yeah. And even a luau, you know, we used to not like, oh, that doesn't count. But no, LUS are great and the people train for them. The performances are, are very authentic.

[00:07:33] Erica - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: They're amazing, amazing.

[00:07:35] Bryan Murphy: Right.

[00:07:35] Jordan - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: Like in Samoa, they actually didn't have fire knife fights, but they did use that. That the knife, the double-edged knife.

[00:07:41] Jordan - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: They just didn't light it on fire.

[00:07:42] How To Choose A Luau

[00:07:42] Bryan Murphy: Oh, I'm curious because you know, you search best luaus on whatever island. How do you rank Luaus? Like for me, it's really hard to write or even talk about ranking a luau. Like who am I to rank it? I dunno. That's

[00:07:55] Erica - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: so true. I think our takeaway is always, 'cause we have. We have been too.

[00:08:00] Erica - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: So man, luaus. It's actually, yeah. Yes. Because we're like, well, if we're gonna write about this. If we're gonna do videos and we're gonna give advice, like they're so expensive, we have to go. We have to have firsthand knowledge, go to every single one and like compare 'em. But we say every single lu out, the dancers are just incredible.

[00:08:21] Erica - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: Their performers are amazing. And so I feel like that is the same across every single luau out there. As you will have just top-notch performers. The rest of the rating comes down to the scenery. What kind of experience do you have? Sure. Is it, yeah. Is it like a, you know, experienced in that ridge up on the hill, which is so cool down by the beach, on a beach with sunset views, or you know, how's the food, which.

[00:08:45] Erica - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: You know, can

[00:08:46] Jordan - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: Yeah.

[00:08:46] Erica - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: Often garner, yeah. Lukewarm reviews.

[00:08:48] Jordan - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: So that's, yeah. So yeah, you're right. You rank 'em, but you could actually break it down by like a cost and benefit. Yeah. What you wanna do and stuff like that.

[00:08:55] Bryan Murphy: Yeah. No, that's well said.

[00:08:58] Expect Imperfect Trips

[00:08:58] Bryan Murphy: Bucket number five. Our last one, experience mistakes. Mistake number 13, thinking your trip will be perfect.

[00:09:05] Erica - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: For anywhere, not just Hawaii,

[00:09:06] Bryan Murphy: for, yeah, I think that's good travel advice in general, right? Yeah. Yeah.

[00:09:09] Erica - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: We just, we've done so many trips and I don't think I've ever had a perfect trip.

[00:09:15] Jordan - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: I

[00:09:15] Erica - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: know

[00:09:15] Jordan - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: just stuff happens. You get sick, bad weather, long lines at a restaurant, you know, this's is common stuff. It's kind of, it's kind of funny.

[00:09:21] Jordan - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: You read reviews for some of the tour operators and stuff and you can just tell like either someone had a bad day or just luck didn't go their way. Yeah. With like, yeah, the tour got canceled the last minute because of a

[00:09:31] Erica - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: safety concern

[00:09:32] Jordan - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: or you know,

[00:09:33] Erica - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: weather

[00:09:33] Jordan - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: or the big, big waves. 'cause it's during the winter.

[00:09:35] Jordan - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: Yeah. So, so you just kinda gotta roll with the punches. Yeah. You know, and I get it. Hawaii's a big trip and it's a long ways.

[00:09:41] Erica - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: But there are so many wonderful ways to experience it. Don't get locked on the one way you had expected to.

[00:09:48] Bryan Murphy: Yeah. Or you battle a kidney stone that I had that last time, that was not fun.

[00:09:54] Bryan Murphy: Like, okay, we're gonna do,

[00:09:56] Jordan - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: yeah,

[00:09:56] Bryan Murphy: quiet or Hawaii with a kidney stone. Like you just never know. You never know what your experience is gonna be.

[00:10:01] Erica - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: You never know. Our whole family had zero virus, one trip, but a kidney stone sounds

[00:10:07] Bryan Murphy: worse.

[00:10:07] Erica - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: You

[00:10:07] Jordan - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: win, you win.

[00:10:09] Erica - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: That was, that's tough.

[00:10:10] Reservations Are Essential

[00:10:10] Bryan Murphy: So stick number 14, not getting reservations.

[00:10:12] Bryan Murphy: That's a kind of a hot topic right now. For a while there was. Just a couple spots. Diamond Head, Han Bay, those reservations you definitely need to get if you want to visit those. But I had to write down, because it feels like the list keeps growing as far as places you need reservations for. Uh, and a state park is a new one on ua.

[00:10:32] Bryan Murphy: You need reservations for that. Why an Napa, Napa State Park? That's been for a little while.

[00:10:38] Erica - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: Mm-hmm.

[00:10:38] Jordan - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: Yeah.

[00:10:38] Bryan Murphy: Well. Yeah. Valley. Yeah. That is a, yeah, that just like last year maybe. Mm-hmm. But like recently, yeah. Akala, sunrise, sunset is just as beautiful. You don't need reservations for sunset, but sunrise you do.

[00:10:53] Bryan Murphy: So as you're just kind of like you're planning through that, you know, double check because things can change even at the time of the recording. You know, things can change. Six months from now, there might be a new, some of them are kind of funky, like you can book it 60 days out. Some are like. 72 hours out.

[00:11:09] Bryan Murphy: Obviously if you want to do a luau, you wanna book that as soon as you know you want to do that. Boat tours, even restaurants. I'm doing an episode in a couple weeks about some places eat on Maui and one of the spots. You, you guys have been here but I haven't been able to get into yet based on, because of reservations, is Mama's Fish House.

[00:11:29] Bryan Murphy: So you wanna get reservations for that? Like, what is it like 3, 6, 9 months in event? Like

[00:11:35] Jordan - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: right when

[00:11:35] Erica - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: they all get up? Yeah. Six months in. If you're in the area swing by that you can, they can probably squeeze you in at the bar.

[00:11:42] Jordan - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: Yeah, there's hacks

[00:11:43] Erica - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: that go or for the next day. Yeah.

[00:11:44] Jordan - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: Yeah. It's fun.

[00:11:45] Bryan Murphy: I was talking to Lisa Pierce, who's a Maui blogger.

[00:11:50] Bryan Murphy: She was on the podcast a few times and she was mentioning like, oh, if just go for lunch.

[00:11:54] Erica - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: Yeah.

[00:11:55] Bryan Murphy: Duh. Like just go during earlier in the day. You know, that

[00:11:58] Jordan - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: used to be a recommendation too, but that it gets filled up also. So I have reservation.

[00:12:02] Bryan Murphy: Does it? Okay.

[00:12:03] Jordan - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: Okay. A better chance of walking in. It is better At lunch, they used to have a different menu, but that it's the same, but it's a beautiful location.

[00:12:08] Jordan - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: It's nice to see during the daytime,

[00:12:10] Erica - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: but a lot of times you can swing by the day before and ask. They have anything for the next day and sometimes there will be a little opening for you.

[00:12:19] Bryan Murphy: Yeah, that's good to know.

[00:12:21] Plan Your Own Hawaii

[00:12:21] Bryan Murphy: So, wrapping up with mistake number 15, is you guys speaking to this a little bit too, but I had on my list trying to recreate someone else's.

[00:12:31] Bryan Murphy: Hawaii trip instead of planning the right one for you. And it's important because it, it's okay to skip road ohana.

[00:12:38] music: Mm-hmm.

[00:12:38] Bryan Murphy: It's okay to not do a luau and maybe do a museum instead. And it's okay to stay on one island. It's okay to not island hop. And it's okay not to hike or to snorkel. I think the main thing to get across is to just.

[00:12:51] Bryan Murphy: Let Hawaii happen and I'm curious how you guys build your days. 'cause we, we'll typically do like wake up with the sun, do our coffee, maybe a little walk, and we usually do, like if we're gonna do something that day, mid-morning over lunch, we usually back at the hotel or resort by like two, three o'clock and wind down.

[00:13:11] Bryan Murphy: Then we do like an easy dinner or something like that. But what do you guys have to speak into that or how do you plan your days?

[00:13:17] Erica - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: We're up and at 'em and out fast.

[00:13:20] Bryan Murphy: Okay.

[00:13:20] Erica - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: Yeah. 'cause we are always testing, looking for new coffee shops, breakfast spots. We are just always looking for new things, so we're always out the door getting something like that.

[00:13:31] Erica - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: Then we go do our experiences, whatever, you know, farm tour, boat. Mm-hmm. Tour whatever we have planned.

[00:13:37] Bryan Murphy: Yeah.

[00:13:38] Erica - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: Hike. And then, you know, hitting up another lunch place that we wanna test out. But yeah, we're usually back at the hotel probably by like two for some beach time and hanging out.

[00:13:50] Jordan - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: Yeah. Just like you said, we don't wanna overload our itinerary.

[00:13:52] Jordan - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: Yeah. So we just take it easy. Yeah. Especially then, that's been my, my big lesson learned.

[00:13:56] Bryan Murphy: Yeah. It feels like the best Hawaii itinerary. It's not one like you impress

[00:14:01] Erica - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: Yeah.

[00:14:01] Bryan Murphy: Instagram with, but it's one that you and your family can actually enjoy.

[00:14:06] Erica - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: Totally.

[00:14:06] Bryan Murphy: And remember, it's really about building those, those memories, right?

[00:14:10] Bryan Murphy: Mm-hmm. Yeah. And, and having those for a lifetime.

[00:14:12] Erica - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: Yeah.

[00:14:12] Bryan Murphy: Yeah.

[00:14:13] Erica - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: I mean, some of my favorite memories are those very basic ones of like walking around after dark with our kids at the resort. You know, it's their first time staying after dark. You know, Henry was like three and he was like, what? You know? Yeah.

[00:14:27] Jordan - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: Stars are out and there's big Gardendale, all these hotels, so it's fun to run around.

[00:14:30] Erica - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: Yeah.

[00:14:31] Jordan - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: Yeah. Be barefoot out there.

[00:14:33] Erica - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: Yeah.

[00:14:34] Bryan Murphy: One, one of my favorite memories was just arriving at the airport and then we're on the shuttle bus going over to the rental car, and I had my daughter on my lap. She's like now 16.

[00:14:45] Bryan Murphy: And you know, at the time she was like, maybe four and a stranger just handing me his ukulele and, you know, started playing around on it. And I have a picture of her, like just smiling and playing. Aw. His. That's

[00:14:58] Erica - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: really

[00:14:58] Bryan Murphy: nice. And

[00:14:59] Erica - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: yeah,

[00:14:59] Bryan Murphy: it's just like, oh man, like he didn't like, I didn't plan for that. Yeah,

[00:15:04] Erica - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: totally.

[00:15:04] Bryan Murphy: Like those are the moments.

[00:15:05] Erica - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: Yeah. Yeah. Those are so special.

[00:15:08] Bryan Murphy: So as we wrap up, anything you guys wanna add, obviously we'll talk about where people can go to find you, but anything else to kind of tie a bow on this conversation of mistakes?

[00:15:19] Erica - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: Even if you make mistakes, you're still gonna have a great time.

[00:15:21] Erica - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: That's like, it's Hawaii. Yeah. It's so hard to have a bad time. It's so wonder. It's such a unique, wonderful, fascinating, vibrant place. Mistakes happen. You're gonna have a great trip.

[00:15:32] Bryan Murphy: Yeah. One of the mistakes we didn't really talk about, but like, I, I remember our first few times we had like three check luggages, like we just do carry-ons now.

[00:15:40] Bryan Murphy: Yeah. Like it's, it's a destination where

[00:15:43] Erica - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: Oh yeah. Don't over pack.

[00:15:44] Bryan Murphy: You don't have to pack so much. Yeah.

[00:15:46] Favorite Maui Food Spots

[00:15:46] Bryan Murphy: One of the things just before we wrap up, I love to always ask because I notice a lot of people who listen to this podcast are foodies. I think a lot of people are just foodies in general. Especially you're going to Hawaii, like best places to eat, you know, since you guys lived on Maui and Oahu, I wanna pick on Maui a little bit.

[00:16:03] Bryan Murphy: What are some of your guys' best spots to eat on the island of Maui?

[00:16:08] Erica - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: Okay, so mine, I love this place. It's a little outta the way. It's in way Luko by the Nu Farm. It's Ula Ula Cafe. It's a food truck. Have you been? It's delicious and I love it.

[00:16:19] Bryan Murphy: Ula, I haven't been,

[00:16:20] Erica - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: no. The woman who runs it is fantastic and the food is incredible and the setting is great.

[00:16:24] Erica - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: You can't lose, they

[00:16:25] Jordan - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: actually give the food from the farm. It's, Hey, hey Plantation. They have a Mac Farm, but they're growing all this other cool stuff too. So it's, it's very farm to table, but in a very low key food, food truck. And they have like a little acai

[00:16:36] Erica - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: Oh

[00:16:36] Jordan - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: yeah. Thing too. So,

[00:16:37] Erica - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: yeah, smoothies. It's just, it's great.

[00:16:39] Jordan - The Hawaii Vacation Guide: Yeah, it's great. Especially if you're doing a hike up there. Yeah. And then I'm gonna go a little fancier. Is Hulu Kitchen by Meryman. It's kinda like a new ones instead of the Westin. And I mean, it's a, it's a Merriman, so it's great. It's all right. I don't wanna say it's not too busy, but probably busy now if Monkey Pot has a line out the door, just around the corner, you just walk.
