Speaker 1:

Good morning and welcome to Starting Right. I am Danny Mac and I'm going to be here every Monday to Friday to help you get a great start to your day. So grab your cup of coffee, sit back and relax for the next five minutes as I help you start your day by starting right. Have you ever done something that totally embarrassed you? You know the kind I mean. It's not just the little embarrassment. This is the kind where you want to hide underneath a rock. Not just the little embarrassment. This is the kind where you want to hide underneath a rock and you pray, asking God to give amnesia to everybody else who was there and saw or heard what happened. Maybe I should actually rephrase that question when was the last time you did something that totally embarrassed you? We've all been there. We've all had those times where we have said or done something and then we realize the impact of what was said and it's just like you want to take the words back. You want the situation to be completely eliminated from everyone else's mind, and yet we still have to deal with it. We still have to struggle with it. Well, I want to tell you a story about a fellow who was getting ready to travel abroad for the very first time and there were several friends that he had that told him to watch out for pickpockets. When he got to this one particularly busy city, he told him that if you go into the subway system, pickpockets will come, they'll grab your wallet and then they'll get on the train, the doors will shut and the pickpocket will be gone before you even know what was happening. So the young man decided to be very, very careful One evening, shortly after he arrived in the city, he was dressed casually in jeans and a light jacket and he went down to the subway.

Speaker 1:

There was an absolute crush of people down there and, sure enough, just about the time the door opened and some people were pouring out, a fellow bumped up against him rather roughly and he thought well, that was strange. So he reached into his pocket and he didn't find his wallet. Well, he grabbed the fellow's coat just as the door began to close and he began to pull. Finally he got the coat all the way out, even though the guy was struggling. The door closed and the guy inside the train had this bewildered look on his face as the train sped off down the track. Proud of himself, the man thought well, that showed him. But when he looked into the fellow's coat he didn't find his wallet. All that for nothing, he thought. But the story does have a happy ending. When he returned to his hotel room, he found his wallet sitting on top of the bureau. When he returned to his hotel room, he found his wallet sitting on top of the bureau.

Speaker 1:

It makes you laugh, but those kind of situations when they happen to you, you are just absolutely inside, filled with anxiousness and fear and worry and, oh man, do you feel like you are an idiot? And, like I said, we've all been there and done something that's caused us to be that way. I was asked recently what the Bible says about embarrassment, about how to handle being embarrassed, and you know there's not a lot there, but there are a few things and I'm still working through the full answer to the question. We know that Peter was embarrassed more than once. We know that James and John had asked Jesus if they could sit on his left and his right in the new kingdom that Jesus was going to have. Jesus said you guys don't understand. The disciples did things that were dumb. They didn't say things that embarrassed themselves, but Jesus never scolded them for the things they did that were embarrassing.

Speaker 1:

But we do have some scripture that helps us at those times where we're feeling embarrassed Over. In the book of Isaiah, chapter 41, verse 10, it tells us Fear not, for I am with you. Do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. It's a promise from God that, no matter where we are or what we've done, we don't need to fear or be embarrassed. God is with us. When we do dumb things, god is with us. When we do things that totally embarrass us, god is with us. God is not embarrassed by us. He will never turn his back on us and he will never leave us feeling in need.

Speaker 1:

I believe that God has a sense of humor and sometimes we forget that when we make mistakes that are embarrassing that way, I think God has a smile and he comes and he puts his arm around us and says you know you're right. That was probably not the smartest thing to do, but I love you anyway. I'm here for you. Don't be upset. I am your heavenly father and I am going to help you. That's the love of God for us even in our difficult situations.

Speaker 1:

I hope you don't face one of those really embarrassing times again very soon. In fact, I hope you never have to face them again, but I can almost guarantee you that we all will. They're going to come. We will be embarrassed by something we say or do, but at those times we don't need to worry about God rejecting us. We may feel panicky and upset, but God's not going to turn his back on us. He's going to put his arm around us and hold us and help us, and that's exactly what we need to get back on track. Have a great day, my friends. We will talk again tomorrow. Thank you for listening today and I invite you to join me Monday to Friday, right here on Starting Right with Danny Mac.
