Speaker 1:

Good morning and welcome to Starting Right. I am Danny Mac and I'm going to be here every Monday to Friday to help you get a great start to your day. So grab your cup of coffee, sit back and relax for the next five minutes as I help you start your day by starting right. Back in 1929, professional sports was in its infancy, but college football was very, very popular, and the biggest game in college football was the Rose Bowl. On January 1st 1929, the Golden State Bears faced off against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in a ferocious Rose Bowl game. That game became infamous not because of who won the game, but because of an incident that took place during that game.

Speaker 1:

Halfway through the second quarter, there's this guy by the name of Roy Regals. He played both on offense and defense. As a lineman for the Golden Bears he was out now on defense. Georgia Tech was on offense and one of their players fumbled the ball on their own 30-yard line. Roy Regals scooped up the ball and began to run towards the end zone, but as he picked it up and started to run, he got hit a number of times. He got turned around and then he just took off and he kept on running, he ran and he ran and he ran. The end zone was getting closer and closer and closer and closer. The crowd was going absolutely crazy until finally his own quarterback grabbed him and tried to stop him because he was running the wrong way. They finally stopped him on the one-yard line and in the next series of plays that didn't go anywhere, the Golden Bears had to wind up forfeiting a point, which ended up that the Yellow Jackets actually won the game. He was absolutely embarrassed, absolutely devastated.

Speaker 1:

The half ended and the teams went to their locker rooms and as the players were coming back out for the second half, roy told his coach he couldn't go back out. He just he couldn't go back out. He was too embarrassed. He said I've ruined you, I've ruined myself, I've ruined the University of California. I couldn't face that crowd to save my life. The coach grabbed Roy by the shoulders and said to him Roy, get up and go back out there. The game is only half over. So Regals went back out into the field and in the second half he played the best half of football of his life.

Speaker 1:

Sometimes we can feel like poor Roy Regals, where we feel like we're doing the right thing and we wind up doing something wrong and we embarrass ourselves, we make ourselves look foolish and then we just don't know what to do with it. We don't know how to handle it. I really liked what the coach said to him when he told him you've only done the first half. The rest is coming.

Speaker 1:

One of the things we have in our walk with God is we've got a God on our side who believes in us. Do you know that God believes in you more than you believe in Him? He is our God, he is with us and he wants to help and to guide us and to encourage us. He wants to be around us and to hold us, even when we've made embarrassing mistakes, which we all have. Psalm, chapter 54 and verse 4 says God is my helper. The Lord keeps me alive. God is my helper. He's the one that helps me when I feel like an idiot. He keeps me alive.

Speaker 1:

God is my helper. He's the one that helps me when I feel like an idiot. He keeps me alive. He comes back and he touches me deep down inside and says it's okay. It's okay. No, god says to us it's okay to make a mistake, it's okay to do something stupid sometimes. It's okay. It doesn't change the fact of his love for us. He continues to be our helper, he continues to be committed to us. So go into your day knowing that if you do something that embarrasses yourself, don't worry about it. God's not going to laugh at you. He's going to love on you, he's going to help you. He is your strength, he's with you, he's for you, he is not against you. Strength, he's with you, he's for you, he is not against you. Thank you for listening today and I invite you to join me Monday to Friday, right here on, starting Right with Danny Mac.
