What if your pain isn’t a punishment? We open the day with a frank, compassionate look at chronic illness, bad advice, and the stubborn goodness of God. JohnnyMac guest-hosts and shares a personal story shaped by misdiagnosis, unanswered prayers, and the quiet courage it takes to keep showing up. Along the way, we confront spiritual clichés that pile shame onto suffering and turn to two anchor texts—John 9 and 2 Corinthians 12—that recast the narrative from blame to grace.
You’ll hear how harmful counsel can wound the already wounded, why a theology of storms matters more than promises of calm seas, and how to practice care that doesn’t turn people into projects. The takeaway is simple and demanding: God is good, even when the outcomes we pray for don’t arrive on schedule. If you’ve carried unanswered questions, this short morning reflection offers clarity, comfort, and room to breathe.

If this encouraged you, subscribe, share it with a friend who needs gentleness today, and leave a quick review to help others find the hope they’re looking for.

Good morning. Welcome to Starting Right with Danny Mack. I'm Johnny Mack and I'll be filling in again today. I want to talk to you today about a young guy who was dealing with some pretty significant health issues. Nothing terminal or anything, but he had some chronic issues that were and still are affecting his ability to live a normal life. He and his wife prayed often just pleading with God for his healing, that he tried to do everything in their power to make him get better. They even tried a surgery which they were told would make everything better, but sadly it was based on a misdiagnosis, and then only resulted in making everything worse. On the Sundays when he was feeling well enough to go to church, he and his wife would often go up after the service and ask for prayer for his healing. And when they did, they would be asked about whether or not he was harboring secret sin in his heart in his heart. They were once told that the only pill this guy should need is the gospel. Now I know the pastors of the church where this happened, and I believe I can safely say that if they knew what was going on, they would be livid. And I want to say to you right now, if you or someone you care about is dealing with a chronic health issue or a major life issue, and this story sounds familiar to you, I am so very sorry that this has happened to you or them. And it's to you that I want to give some encouragement this morning. In the book of John, chapter nine, we read the story of Jesus and the man who was born blind. The disciples, upon seeing the man, asked Jesus who sinned, the blind man or his parents? And in response, Jesus very clearly said neither this man nor his parents sinned. Now as nobody's obviously capable of living a perfect life other than Jesus at some point we can safely assume that this man and his parents sinned. But what Jesus was saying is that this man's blindness was not a punishment for sin. We can also look in 2 Corinthians twelve, verses 7 to 9. There we read about Paul pleading with God to take away his thorn in his flesh. After he's pleaded three times, Jesus responded, My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. He didn't bring up Paul's past. He didn't bring up the church that Paul had persecuted. He said, My grace is sufficient for you. Whatever it is you're facing, whether it's a chronic illness or a loved one not living or for the Lord or whatever it is, I want you to know today that God is a God of love and forgiveness, that you are loved so very much. We live in a fallen world and bad stuff happens. But that doesn't mean that you are being punished. God never promised calm seas, but he does promise to be with us in the storm, whatever that may be. And as I'm sure you've probably guessed, I am that young man, although I'm not so young anymore. I've been dealing with some pretty big chronic health issues for a little over the past decade. Life can be hard, but God is here and God is good. Oh, if there's anything I want you to leave you with, is that God is good. Thank you.
