Jealousy doesn’t usually announce itself. It slips in as a quiet complaint, a small grudge, or that sinking feeling when someone else gets what we wanted. Today I walk through Cain’s story in Genesis 4 not to gawk at a “bad guy,” but to trace the steps that took him from a careless offering to anger, denial, and the first murder. If you’ve ever felt overlooked by God, irritated at church, or frustrated when another person gets blessed fast, you’ll recognize the warning signs.
We zoom in on the contrast that changes everything: Cain brings some of his produce, but Abel brings the first and best. That difference isn’t about farming versus shepherding. It’s about posture, worship, and what we believe God is worth. When our attitude turns casual, we become vulnerable to comparison, jealousy, and anger that starts looking for a target. I also connect the dots to a pattern many of us live out: we get mad at God, then we do or say something “really, really dumb” that hurts people we love.
To show there’s a way back, I bring in David’s failure with Bathsheba and the healing turn of Psalm 51. Confession breaks the cycle. God’s forgiveness restores joy. We close with a practical heart check you can use today: What am I carrying, who am I resenting, and what do I need to make right? Subscribe to Starting Right, share this with a friend who needs a reset, and leave a review so more people can find these daily Christian devotionals.
Good morning and welcome to Starting Right. I am Danny Mack, and I'm going to be here every Monday to Friday to help you get a great start to your day. So grab your cup of coffee, sit back and relax for the next five minutes as I help you start your day by starting right. When
we think about our Bible characters, we generally think about the good guys. Well, today I want to do something a little bit different. I want to take a look at one of the bad guys. Cain was the very first child born on this earth, but he also became the very first murderer. Genesis chapter 4 tells us about him. Cain was born first, and then shortly afterwards he had a brother born by the name of Abel. Both of these boys were the sons of Adam and Eve. As they grew up, they took different directions in life. Cain became a farmer, growing fruits and vegetables. Abel he became a shepherd, and he looked after sheep. In Genesis
chapter four and verse three, it tells us about a key turning point in their lives. When it was time for harvest, Cain presented some of his crops as a gift to the Lord. Abel also brought a gift, the best portions of the firstborn lambs from his flock. And the Lord accepted Abel and his gift, but he did not accept Cain and his gift, and this made Cain very angry. So from this portion of the story we can determine a couple of things. We can tell that God was very much an important part in their lives. He was very active. There was no doubt they knew who he was, and they knew the story from their parents of how they came to be and how this world came to be, and probably also how Adam and Eve got kicked out of the Garden of Eden. But they had two very different responses to who God was. We're told that Cain brought some of his produce to give to God. But Abel brought the very best, the choice pieces of the lambs from his flocks to offer to God.
It's been often asked why did God reject Cain's offering while he accepted Abel's? Well, it's really very simple. Cain brought some, Abel brought his first and his best. It appears that the biggest problem here was with Cain's attitude, and we can see that even in his response to what God said to him. God told him that things would get better if he listened and learned, but Cain rejected that. He just got angry and upset. Within a very few days he let his anger at God cause him to kill his brother Abel, as if somehow that would solve the problem. In verse nine, God confronts Cain and asks him where his brother is, and Cain's response simply is, I don't know. Am I my brother's guardian? He wouldn't acknowledge what he had done, and he did not confess his sin before God. And so God punished him. Look at the progression that happened in Cain's life. It started with just a bad attitude about God. I don't have to give him my best, I don't have to do the right thing. It went from that to the place where he became angry at his brother because what his brother had done was right before God, and God accepted what Abel had done and what Abel had offered. His bad attitude of God now became jealousy about his brother, and from that jealousy there grew anger, and from the anger it created the action that killed his brother.
I think if we're honest, most of us will admit we have times where we have a bad attitude. We may even get upset or jealous. If someone else receives something that we've been praying for for a long time, and we still haven't seen it, but they seem to get it when they prayed for it the very first time. And after that we become angry. We become angry at God or at the church, and we do or say something really, really dumb.
When David sinned with Bathsheba, he thought he'd gotten away with it. He then tried to hide it and wound up having Uriah killed, and that was even more wrong. And it was finally when Nathan the prophet came and challenged him that David acknowledged what his sin was. In Psalm 51, David said, Have mercy on me, O God, because of your unfailing love, because of your great compassion, blot out the stain of my sins. And God began to work a healing inside of David. We don't
have to wait until it gets that disastrous in our lives. We need to be aware of what we are feeling and be able to examine our own hearts. Is there something inside of me that has a bad attitude towards God or my church or my pastor? Is there something inside of me that I need to make right? Am I feeling jealous because someone else got blessed or got something that I didn't get? Have I been holding a grudge for so long that it's starting to turn to anger? This is where God can do something really powerful. If we take those
weaknesses and all that stuff we're carrying around to Him, He will forgive us and then He will restore joy into our lives. Man, I don't know about you, but I want more joy in my life. I don't want to carry around all the problems and all the mistakes that I've made. What we want and need is to allow God to bring forgiveness and joy back into us so that we can face the day and our families and our jobs with smiles on our faces, with joy in our hearts, thanking God for everything that He has done for
us. Let God give you the peace and strength that will allow you to face everything yet you must today, and know that He is always with you and will never let you go. Have a great day, my friends. We'll talk again tomorrow. Thank you for listening today. And I invite you to join me Monday to Friday right here on Starting Right with Danny Mack.
