In this episode of Success is Subjective, Joanna Lilly sits down with Kade Matthews—a devoted father, psychotherapist, and lifelong advocate for creating healing spaces. Kade opens up about his own non-linear path, weaving together stories of parenthood, professional growth, and the ways music, poetry, and time in nature have been therapeutic anchors in his life. As both a clinician and a parent of young adults, Kade offers a rare dual perspective: candidly acknowledging his own stumbles while emphasizing the importance of compassion, connection, and finding joy in the journey. From mountain biking and canyoneering to supporting families through transition programs, Kade’s story is one of resilience, authenticity, and living in alignment with values. Listeners will walk away inspired by Kade’s reminder that success isn’t about perfection—it’s about presence, vulnerability, and the courage to keep showing up for yourself and those you love.

What happens when you follow the “right” path… and it still doesn’t feel right? On this episode of Success is Subjective, Joanna sits down with Mark White, Clinical Director at Red Mountain Sedona, to trace his decades-long journey from small-town Michigan to the red rocks of Arizona. Mark shares candid reflections on the many detours, career pivots, and soul-searching moments that ultimately led him to discover his calling in therapeutic work with young adults. From parking cars and considering nursing to kayaking wild rivers and nearly joining the Air Force, Mark’s story is a powerful reminder that discovering what isn’t your path can be just as valuable as finding what is. Now thriving in his role at Red Mountain Sedona and biking the same desert trails that inspired him decades ago, Mark’s story comes full circle—with wisdom, heart, and a reminder that no step is wasted if you stay curious.

Today’s former participant is Cassie. In this episode of Success Is Subjective, Joanna sits down with Bec Koop, whose life has taken more unexpected turns than most. Raised in Northern Virginia and originally pursuing criminal justice, Bec shifted paths after a professor’s honest advice—and a realization that chasing justice wasn’t the same as finding peace. Since then, her journey has included ski resorts, snowmobiles, cannabis flower design, and now, healing work rooted in movement and joy. After surviving two serious back injuries, Bec chose a different kind of recovery—one built on yoga, meditation, and inner work instead of medication. Today, she helps make homes more accessible and hosts Vibrational Transcendance events that reconnect people with play, creativity, and their inner child. Bec’s story is raw, powerful, and full of heart—proof that success doesn’t always follow a straight line.

In this episode of Success Is Subjective, career educator and coach Lisa Marker-Robbins shares how her own journey—from navigating family expectations to founding multiple companies—has shaped the way she helps young people and their parents chart meaningful, purpose-aligned paths forward. With a background in teaching and educational leadership, Lisa launched her first company to serve 15 to 25-year-olds seeking clarity about their future. Since then, she’s started and sold companies, raised twins and bonus kids, and redefined success not as achievement alone, but as alignment with strengths and values.
Lisa opens up about the pressure she felt to attend college, the assumption she’d be a stay-at-home mom, and the powerful decision to forge her own path in educational entrepreneurship. Her philosophy? “There’s no failure or mistake, as long as there’s a lesson in it.” Whether she’s advising teens, coaching parents, or guiding clients through post-college transitions, Lisa believes career development is a family journey—and one that doesn’t need to follow a traditional script to be successful.

In this episode of Success Is Subjective, drama therapist and trauma specialist Maya Kruger invites us into a story shaped by creativity, resilience, and a life-altering turning point. Raised in Israel by academic parents, Maya felt caught between expectations and her love for theater—until an unexpected event in her final year of high school changed everything. What followed was a journey through military service, an Outward Bound program in Colorado, and a leap of faith into NYU’s drama therapy program. Along the way, Maya discovered that true impact doesn’t require a spotlight—it requires presence, compassion, and emotional courage. Now a licensed therapist and mother of two, she blends artistry and trauma work to help others navigate their own breaking points. This conversation is a testament to the quiet power of reinvention and the many ways we define success beyond the stage.

On this episode of Success is Subjective, Joanna brings you another story from our special former participant series where she invites former participants to recount their personal journey. Today’s former participant is Holly Wilson. Raised in the tight-knit mountain town of Crested Butte, Colorado, the constant visibility of small-town life motivated Holly to stay on top of her game. A self-proclaimed “perfectionist” with a track record of exceptional performance and ambition, it came as no surprise when she was awarded a full-ride scholarship to the University of Colorado Boulder. As she transitioned into college life—where the external pressure to maintain perfection diminished—Holly discovered new dimensions of her identity beginning to surface. A different version of herself began to take shape: one that craved freedom and fun, often fueled by alcohol. This shift ultimately landed the once-driven student on academic probation during her very first semester. After switching majors, relocating to Los Angeles in pursuit of an acting career, and surviving a devastating and unforeseeable accident, Holly found herself with no more guardrails to stop her descent into full-blown addiction.
Embracing recovery wholeheartedly, Holly tackled the deep emotional work required for healing with resilience and clarity. On the other side of addiction, she uncovered a calling: to help establish a treatment center designed specifically for women’s unique needs. As the founder and Chief Empowerment Officer of Women’s Recovery in Denver, Holly brings a bold, forward-thinking voice to the conversation around mental health and substance use recovery, championing a vision for women to lead whole, healthy, and authentically integrated lives.

Today’s former participant is Phil Nutt. Phil grew up in Jackson, Mississippi, where by most standards, he had a relatively normal upbringing and was a fairly normal boy – minus anger issues that plagued him from a young age. By the time he was 15 years old, Phil became a full blown alcoholic and his addiction only got worse with time as drugs were thrown into the mix of his substances. Come freshman year of college, Phil’s life was spinning out of control as the decisions he made while under the influence became intensely dangerous. Phil shares with listeners an honest look at his off and on treatment journey and what ultimately gave him the desire and ability to maintain his sobriety. He also explains the meaningful work he does today as he helps young men who are in a similar position as he was when he was younger.

On this episode of Success is Subjective, Joanna brings you another story from our special former participant series where she extends the opportunity for former participants to share their journey with others. Today’s former participant is Kelly Wu. Kelly shares how as a raging teen with pent up emotion, her outward circumstances and outcomes began to reflect her inner turmoil. Her first attempt at treatment was unsuccessful due to the fact that she was still an adolescent who was being forced, without deciding she wanted it for herself, nor having the cognitive processing and brain development necessary to understand that it was good for her. Taking 10 years to obtain only a few credits at a 2-year community college, Kelly finally realized sobriety was something she wanted and was willing to work for. Today, Kelly is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, the chief operating officer at PCH Treatment and also works as an individual therapist.

On this episode of Success is Subjective, Joanna brings you another story from our special former participant series where she extends the opportunity for former participants to share their journey with others. Today’s former participant is Ryan McGinty. Ryan holds a masters degree in clinical mental health counseling and has a successful career as a leader in the therapeutic treatment field. He’s most proud of the life he has built in Sedona, Arizona with his wife and two children. While in many senses, Ryan has “arrived” and found his path in career, family and internal peace, it took him many years to get to where he is today. He explains to listeners the beauty of growing up with parents who instilled in their children the significance of choosing sobriety after they both recovered from substance use, and with one of his parents being a counselor and the profound lessons he was privileged to earn at a young age. He also shares the irony of how, after all his parents instilled in him, he still ended up abusing substances. What started off as just trying marijuana once, ended up spiraling him into many years of addiction with more intense substances. While it took Ryan a continual commitment to recovery, a decade of college and multiple career changes, Ryan eventually realized his purpose and passion and now helps others who struggle in similar ways as he once did.

Working 5 part-time jobs, while married and in school full-time was the straw that broke the camel's back. That is, the back of today’s Success is Subjective guest, Cam Sherman. While Cam is now a certified mental health counselor and the executive director of NeuroDev, he had to overcome tremendous mental hurdles of self-doubt and acceptance in order to get to this point. He shares with listeners how living a life almost entirely in submission to doing the things he felt he “should” be doing, led him to a state of total burnout. With tremendous personal growth and an undeniable change of perspective on self, career, goals and life, Cam explains how he was able to thrive in his now-career not through trying to fix people and problems, but by helping them focus on experiences and perspective development. Cam is a deep well of wisdom and compassion, and this message is sure to speak to the hearts and minds of any who feel they are stumbling along their own path, not sure of who they are or what they want.

As you listeners know, Success is Subjective is all about the winding road many people take—going from teen to adult, to an adult who’s unsure about their direction, to someone who tries out different paths… and eventually, kind of figures things out. As is the case for today’s guest, Cindy Palmer. While her family messaging instilled “college or bust”, Cindy’s path through college and beyond was anything but predictable… anything but “normal.” Though she graduated college with her degree in microbiology, she had no interest in pursuing medical school and didn’t know what to do next. An arbitrary ad at the back of a magazine led Cindy to an outdoor leadership opportunity. That was the very beginning of the zigzag road that would take Cindy all the way to founding Threshold Coaches. Listen in to hear more about Threshold Coaches and the intentional and impactful work they do to support students by helping them develop executive functioning skills and cultivate tools to help them succeed through their college education and beyond.

Today’s former participant is Fred Palmer. Fred is a licensed alcohol and drug counselor and certified recovery coach, who also works as a career educator at Colorado State University. While he’s found stability in his life and is using his education and personal strengths to now help others, it took many years of his own treatment journey to arrive where he is today. As a young adult, Fred decided to take a gap year before attending college. Once enrolled and attending CU Boulder, it was only a matter of weeks before fear of failure along with underlying mental health issues, caused Fred to drop out of school and move back in with his parents. From then on, the war for his sobriety was in full force. Going back and forth from treatment center to treatment center, he finally admitted to himself that there was a part of him that didn’t want recovery. Tune in to hear the key pivotal moments that led to Fred’s sobriety, as well as his encouragement to those who have been sober but later found themselves relapsing.

On this episode of Success is Subjective, Joanna brings you another story from our special former participant series where she extends the opportunity for former participants who feel comfortable sharing their journey with others. Today’s former participant is Bryan Fikes. His start to life was what most would consider an American “ideal” upbringing. Attending a private school and having healthy relationships with family and friends, as well as being a strong athlete, Bryan appreciated his early experiences. But by 6th grade, a major transition took place in his life. It wasn’t long after that when Bryan found himself becoming a 180 version of who he was before. Addiction set in as he wound up on a dangerous road of uncertainty. Byan shares with listeners how he ended up in such a dark place, and the work he had to commit to in order to find sobriety and stability. Having one’s identity tied to an external source or outcome such as a job or physical skill can prove to be detrimental. Joe Fuller, today’s Success is Subjective guest, knows this plight firsthand. A highly driven child, Joe had his mind made up to become a professional baseball player. Not only did he have the passion for it, he had the discipline and raw talent that may have taken him all the way to the big leagues. That pictured future was obliterated when unforeseen life circumstances would erase any possibility of going pro. With his identity as a baseball player abruptly stripped away, Joe spiraled into years of identity seeking and pain numbing behaviors. Today, he shares with Joanna and listeners that while his life had many less than favorable detours, he wouldn’t trade any of his past because it’s what brought him to where he is today – a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with his own private counseling practice. Joe shares his gratitude and zeal for the work he does today, as he helps others cultivate a sense of identity in who they are, rather than what they do. This episode is heartfelt and down to earth, making it relatable for any listener and one that you don’t want to miss.

Today’s episode of Success is Subjective features a conversation between Joanna and Steve Roth. Steve is a licensed clinical social worker, and the Executive Director of The Arise Society – a transition center that supports young adults with digital addictions, mental health challenges, and those who struggle with motivation. While college wasn’t optional in Steve’s family system, he personally was very eager to begin his post-secondary education upon highschool graduation. With an inclination towards psychology, he set out with a game plan in mind and pursued his undergrad at Plattsburgh State University of New York. Steve’s journey to where he is now was anything but cut and dry — taking him on a global pursuit of self discovery and personal development. While he is passionate about his wife, friends, career and those he is able to help, Steve encourages listeners to lean into moments of discomfort - the seasons in life where nothing is as hoped for - because it’s both the good and bad experiences that ultimately lead each individual to where they need to be.

For many people, it takes trying new things and experiencing different opportunities to discover one’s true passion. Sometimes, it’s the mini-interests that lead us to the ultimate one – the passion we will embrace for many years to come. That was the case for today’s Success is Subjective guest, Daryn Reiner. While Daryn is settled into her role in the mental health field, and as a mom to a child with special needs, it took many pursuits to arrive where she is now. Coming from a family where she, as a child, was indirectly positioned as more of an adult, Daryn’s perception of herself as a responsible, stable, problem-solver was just one aspect of who she was. After many exciting adventures overseas, Daryn credits her service in the Navy as the first opportunity in her life that revealed to her the depth of her personality, giftings and strengths. To her astonishment, Daryn was pleased to discover that not only was she a logical thinker, she also had a deeply creative side. With many developed skill sets and her new found revelation, Daryn took the culmination of all she was and all she had done and pursued a career in the mental health field. Tune in to hear how Daryn utilized every building block of her life to establish the foundation of who she is and for you to be reminded that no effort is wasted; every opportunity can be a gift to learn to grow and learn.

Many high school students feel pressured by friends and relatives to attend college upon graduation. Interestingly, today’s guest had the complete opposite experience. For Darla Beam, college was overtly out of the question as it wasn’t something her parents could afford. After exploring one coast to the other, becoming a caretaker for a loved one and everything in between, Darla slowly started identifying her own strengths. She began to realize how much she loved people – more specifically: how she loved being present with them. Being with them in the good times and bad, helping them stir up a vision for what their life could look like and identifying their own goals… this was what Darla knew she was made for. With that, she became a conscious life and leadership coach, who works with people to help them identify and remove barriers that are in the way of becoming all they want to be. This noteworthy episode is inspiring, uplifting, and sure to spark hope in your heart with the realization that it’s never too late to make a change or become who you know you were meant to be.

On this episode of Success is Subjective, Joanna brings you another story from our special former participant series where she extends the opportunity for former participants who feel comfortable sharing their journey with others. Viviana is today’s former participant and she comes with a story of transparency. Sharing what it was like as a teen in foster care, to being in an inpatient facility for three years before being thrust into college, Viviana is here to share the good, bad, and ugly of her story in hopes that it might provide a sense of comfort and understanding for others who may have been or are currently in similar situations. After years of reflection on those mostly negative experiences in her life, Viviana has had time to process and make sense of all the chaos. With hindsight perspective, she shares incredibly wise and thoughtful advice for anyone who is interested in pursuing college immediately after treatment.
NOTE: The podcasts in this series can include sensitive subjects such as suicide, self-harm, substance abuse, hospitalizations, psychotic episodes, and other traumatic experiences which include parts of the treatment journey. No topic is off limits and not all stories are positive but they are real, raw, and transparent.
**Listener discretion is advised**

It’s not uncommon for someone to set out on a path they really believe in, or pursue the path that grueling years of hard work earned them a degree in. It’s also not out of the ordinary for a certain eye-opening life experience to cause an individual to want to change course in pursuit of a different passion, lifestyle or outcome. That was the case for today’s Success is Subjective guest, John Morris. After undergraduate studies at Ohio Wesleyan University and completing his MBA from Penn State’s Smeal College of Business, John felt pretty confident of the future that was unfolding in front of him. After a successful eight year career as a market maker, trading options on the floor of the Philadelphia Eagle stock exchange, John had a personal experience which propelled him onto a completely different path altogether. Lean in is as he shares what that defining experience was, and how he is now using it to help dozens of individuals all across America.
