On this episode of Success is Subjective, Joanna brings you another story from our special former participant series where she extends the opportunity for former participants to share their journey with others. Today’s former participant is Kelly Wu. Kelly shares how as a raging teen with pent up emotion, her outward circumstances and outcomes began to reflect her inner turmoil. Her first attempt at treatment was unsuccessful due to the fact that she was still an adolescent who was being forced, without deciding she wanted it for herself, nor having the cognitive processing and brain development necessary to understand that it was good for her. Taking 10 years to obtain only a few credits at a 2-year community college, Kelly finally realized sobriety was something she wanted and was willing to work for. Today, Kelly is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, the chief operating officer at PCH Treatment and also works as an individual therapist.

On this episode of Success is Subjective, Joanna brings you another story from our special former participant series where she extends the opportunity for former participants to share their journey with others. Today’s former participant is Ryan McGinty. Ryan holds a masters degree in clinical mental health counseling and has a successful career as a leader in the therapeutic treatment field. He’s most proud of the life he has built in Sedona, Arizona with his wife and two children. While in many senses, Ryan has “arrived” and found his path in career, family and internal peace, it took him many years to get to where he is today. He explains to listeners the beauty of growing up with parents who instilled in their children the significance of choosing sobriety after they both recovered from substance use, and with one of his parents being a counselor and the profound lessons he was privileged to earn at a young age. He also shares the irony of how, after all his parents instilled in him, he still ended up abusing substances. What started off as just trying marijuana once, ended up spiraling him into many years of addiction with more intense substances. While it took Ryan a continual commitment to recovery, a decade of college and multiple career changes, Ryan eventually realized his purpose and passion and now helps others who struggle in similar ways as he once did.

Working 5 part-time jobs, while married and in school full-time was the straw that broke the camel's back. That is, the back of today’s Success is Subjective guest, Cam Sherman. While Cam is now a certified mental health counselor and the executive director of NeuroDev, he had to overcome tremendous mental hurdles of self-doubt and acceptance in order to get to this point. He shares with listeners how living a life almost entirely in submission to doing the things he felt he “should” be doing, led him to a state of total burnout. With tremendous personal growth and an undeniable change of perspective on self, career, goals and life, Cam explains how he was able to thrive in his now-career not through trying to fix people and problems, but by helping them focus on experiences and perspective development. Cam is a deep well of wisdom and compassion, and this message is sure to speak to the hearts and minds of any who feel they are stumbling along their own path, not sure of who they are or what they want.

As you listeners know, Success is Subjective is all about the winding road many people take—going from teen to adult, to an adult who’s unsure about their direction, to someone who tries out different paths… and eventually, kind of figures things out. As is the case for today’s guest, Cindy Palmer. While her family messaging instilled “college or bust”, Cindy’s path through college and beyond was anything but predictable… anything but “normal.” Though she graduated college with her degree in microbiology, she had no interest in pursuing medical school and didn’t know what to do next. An arbitrary ad at the back of a magazine led Cindy to an outdoor leadership opportunity. That was the very beginning of the zigzag road that would take Cindy all the way to founding Threshold Coaches. Listen in to hear more about Threshold Coaches and the intentional and impactful work they do to support students by helping them develop executive functioning skills and cultivate tools to help them succeed through their college education and beyond.

Growing up in a figurative fish bowl in a small town in Texas, Chelsea Reeves had no idea what the world had in store for her beyond a bubble-wrapped life of what she describes as privilege. By the time she got to college, it didn’t take long before Chelsea realized the world she grew up in was much different than what her peers and others around her had experienced. Her tenacious commitment to recovery and healing paid off as she finally uncovered her calling, after unhooking herself from the pressure of being what she thought she should be. On this episode of Success is Subjective, Joanna brings you another story from our special former participant series where she extends the opportunity for the former participants who feel comfortable, to share their journey with others. Today’s former participant is Fred Palmer. Fred is a licensed alcohol and drug counselor and certified recovery coach, who also works as a career educator at Colorado State University. While he’s found stability in his life and is using his education and personal strengths to now help others, it took many years of his own treatment journey to arrive where he is today. As a young adult, Fred decided to take a gap year before attending college. Once enrolled and attending CU Boulder, it was only a matter of weeks before fear of failure along with underlying mental health issues, caused Fred to drop out of school and move back in with his parents. From then on, the war for his sobriety was in full force. Going back and forth from treatment center to treatment center, he finally admitted to himself that there was a part of him that didn’t want recovery. Tune in to hear the key pivotal moments that led to Fred’s sobriety, as well as his encouragement to those who have been sober but later found themselves relapsing.

On this episode of Success is Subjective, Joanna brings you another story from our special former participant series where she extends the opportunity for former participants who feel comfortable sharing their journey with others. Today’s former participant is Bryan Fikes. His start to life was what most would consider an American “ideal” upbringing. Attending a private school and having healthy relationships with family and friends, as well as being a strong athlete, Bryan appreciated his early experiences. But by 6th grade, a major transition took place in his life. It wasn’t long after that when Bryan found himself becoming a 180 version of who he was before. Addiction set in as he wound up on a dangerous road of uncertainty. Byan shares with listeners how he ended up in such a dark place, and the work he had to commit to in order to find sobriety and stability. He also leaves listeners with a hopeful message about how his transformed life has made it possible for him to support others on their own journeys, and offers advice specifically for parents.

Having one’s identity tied to an external source or outcome such as a job or physical skill can prove to be detrimental. Joe Fuller, today’s Success is Subjective guest, knows this plight firsthand. A highly driven child, Joe had his mind made up to become a professional baseball player. Not only did he have the passion for it, he had the discipline and raw talent that may have taken him all the way to the big leagues. That pictured future was obliterated when unforeseen life circumstances would erase any possibility of going pro. With his identity as a baseball player abruptly stripped away, Joe spiraled into years of identity seeking and pain numbing behaviors. Today, he shares with Joanna and listeners that while his life had many less than favorable detours, he wouldn’t trade any of his past because it’s what brought him to where he is today – a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with his own private counseling practice. Joe shares his gratitude and zeal for the work he does today, as he helps others cultivate a sense of identity in who they are, rather than what they do. This episode is heartfelt and down to earth, making it relatable for any listener and one that you don’t want to miss.

Today’s episode of Success is Subjective features a conversation between Joanna and Steve Roth. Steve is a licensed clinical social worker, and the Executive Director of The Arise Society – a transition center that supports young adults with digital addictions, mental health challenges, and those who struggle with motivation. While college wasn’t optional in Steve’s family system, he personally was very eager to begin his post-secondary education upon highschool graduation. With an inclination towards psychology, he set out with a game plan in mind and pursued his undergrad at Plattsburgh State University of New York. Steve’s journey to where he is now was anything but cut and dry — taking him on a global pursuit of self discovery and personal development. While he is passionate about his wife, friends, career and those he is able to help, Steve encourages listeners to lean into moments of discomfort - the seasons in life where nothing is as hoped for - because it’s both the good and bad experiences that ultimately lead each individual to where they need to be.

For many people, it takes trying new things and experiencing different opportunities to discover one’s true passion. Sometimes, it’s the mini-interests that lead us to the ultimate one – the passion we will embrace for many years to come. That was the case for today’s Success is Subjective guest, Daryn Reiner. While Daryn is settled into her role in the mental health field, and as a mom to a child with special needs, it took many pursuits to arrive where she is now. Coming from a family where she, as a child, was indirectly positioned as more of an adult, Daryn’s perception of herself as a responsible, stable, problem-solver was just one aspect of who she was. After many exciting adventures overseas, Daryn credits her service in the Navy as the first opportunity in her life that revealed to her the depth of her personality, giftings and strengths. To her astonishment, Daryn was pleased to discover that not only was she a logical thinker, she also had a deeply creative side. With many developed skill sets and her new found revelation, Daryn took the culmination of all she was and all she had done and pursued a career in the mental health field. Tune in to hear how Daryn utilized every building block of her life to establish the foundation of who she is and for you to be reminded that no effort is wasted; every opportunity can be a gift to learn to grow and learn.

Many high school students feel pressured by friends and relatives to attend college upon graduation. Interestingly, today’s guest had the complete opposite experience. For Darla Beam, college was overtly out of the question as it wasn’t something her parents could afford. After exploring one coast to the other, becoming a caretaker for a loved one and everything in between, Darla slowly started identifying her own strengths. She began to realize how much she loved people – more specifically: how she loved being present with them. Being with them in the good times and bad, helping them stir up a vision for what their life could look like and identifying their own goals… this was what Darla knew she was made for. With that, she became a conscious life and leadership coach, who works with people to help them identify and remove barriers that are in the way of becoming all they want to be. This noteworthy episode is inspiring, uplifting, and sure to spark hope in your heart with the realization that it’s never too late to make a change or become who you know you were meant to be.

It’s not uncommon for someone to set out on a path they really believe in, or pursue the path that grueling years of hard work earned them a degree in. It’s also not out of the ordinary for a certain eye-opening life experience to cause an individual to want to change course in pursuit of a different passion, lifestyle or outcome. That was the case for today’s Success is Subjective guest, John Morris. After undergraduate studies at Ohio Wesleyan University and completing his MBA from Penn State’s Smeal College of Business, John felt pretty confident of the future that was unfolding in front of him. After a successful eight year career as a market maker, trading options on the floor of the Philadelphia Eagle stock exchange, John had a personal experience which propelled him onto a completely different path altogether. Lean in is as he shares what that defining experience was, and how he is now using it to help dozens of individuals all across America.

It’s not uncommon for successful high school students to get to college and find themselves hit with the reality that their former education wasn't nearly sufficient enough to help them feel confident and equipped for the rigorous academics that lay in front of them. For others, this process of pursuing a degree can be infinitely more daunting with any undiagnosed mental health conditions, as was the case for today’s Success is Subjective guest, Dr. Bianca Busch. While Dr. Bianca is now an esteemed psychiatrist with many accomplishments under her belt - career, personal, and academic - she fought hard… harder than many to get to where she is now. After years of struggling through college, knowing she wanted to go to medical school but having a very difficult time with the sciences, Dr. Bianca was encouraged by a boss and mentor to get testing done. The test results helped Dr. Bianca understand herself better and gave her a confidence boost that encouraged her to continue her education. With a new understanding of how her brain works, a huge perspective shifted for her: she realized she wasn’t stupid, as she once felt, but rather, she needed a different approach to her studies. Now as the founder of The College Psychiatrist, and author of Test Anxiety No More, Dr. Bianca Busch brings the desperately needed morale boost to college students and their families. This episode is deeply enriched with wisdom, perspective, and numerous resources for listeners to cling to.

On this episode of Success is Subjective, Joanna brings you another story from our special former participant series where she extends the opportunity for former participants who feel comfortable sharing their journey with others. Today’s former participant is Dan O’Gorman. Dan grew up in the suburbs of Chicago and fell to addiction as a teen. While attending a handful of outpatient treatments, as well as a short stay at a residential center, it took a near death experience for him and his parents to realize the magnitude of the situation and to implement more extreme measures. Dan explains that his sobriety began out of guilt, but it has lasted because of his community connection, grit and the realization that not only was it possible for him to succeed, but that he finally wanted it for himself. He shares the enlightened advice he would give to his younger self, now on the other side of addiction – which is both inspiring and useful to those listening who also struggle with substance use. On this episode of Success is Subjective, Joanna brings you another story from our special former participant series where she extends the opportunity for former participants who feel comfortable sharing their journey with others. Today’s former participant is Jacqueline. Jacqueline sought out treatment for substance use as a 22-year-old adult. While not a teen, and certainly not forced into treatment, Jacqueline very much felt that treatment was a desperate and crucial last resort – a decision she had to make. While the process began as an immediate and hopeful band-aid solution, it didn’t take long for Jacqueline to see the hope of her future unfold. After her stay in a detox center, she accepted that more work needed to be done and she bravely continued her sobriety journey. Today, Jacqueline shares a hopeful story of success, while encouraging listeners that a choice to stay in treatment, despite the discomfort it can bring, can lead to a life of freedom, joy and pride in the hard work that was done. Jacqueline also leaves listeners with a simple, yet profound perspective shift that helped her stay focused on her sobriety, rather than allowing discouragement to take over.

For many people, a core desire based on natural giftings or a childhood dream comes forth when asked what their passion is. For others, they don’t quite know what makes their heart come alive until they stumble upon that hobby, career or volunteer opportunity sometime in adulthood. Regardless of the “how” and “when,” life eventually seems to bring all of us to the path we need to be on, at some point or another. For Maddie McCandless, she discovered her unexpected passion for winemaking as a young adult, after tragedy struck her family. Taking on the mindset of one of the most important people in her life, Maddie made an abrupt, but well thought out change in her education, going from pre-pharmacy to agriculture. On today’s episode of Success is Subjective, Maddie and Joanna discuss the winding road that led Maddie to where she is today: thriving in her career and living life to the fullest.

On this episode of Success is Subjective, Joanna brings you another story from our special former participant series where she extends the opportunity for former participants who feel comfortable sharing their journey with others. Today’s former participant is Evan. Evan has thrived in his sobriety for the last four years and is on a path to helping others who reflect his younger self, who also struggled with substance use and lack of coping skills. While his journey before treatment was anything but a walk in the park, Evan sits down with Joanna to share with listeners how he has found success in his eyes, confidence in who he is and vision for where he’s going. From a wilderness program, to a recovery program and then to a sober living house, Evan explains how each step was absolutely essential in helping him create a life he is proud of, where he no longer relies on substances to cope with life challenges. Tune in for another insightful and uplifting conversation.
NOTE: The podcasts in this series can include sensitive subjects such as suicide, self-harm, substance abuse, hospitalizations, psychotic episodes, and other traumatic experiences which include parts of the treatment journey. No topic is off limits and not all stories are positive but they are real, raw, and transparent.

It’s one thing to comprehend that gap years can be helpful for some “misguided” people in the world. It’s another challenge to identify that a gap year could be personally beneficial, and to realize they can actually propel a person further in life and career than bulldozing 4 years of college immediately after high school, in many situations. But that’s part of the message today’s Success is Subjective guest is here to share with listeners. Dan Jordan is an author, accessibility coordinator and a counselor in higher education. From how to have a productive gap year, the beauty of trying and failing and the importance of self-advocacy, the guidance he offers listeners today is full of insight for any young adult and their parents. Additionally, as the father of a son with learning differences, Dan’s advice doesn’t only come from the place of a professional, but also from personal experience, making it all the more rich and meaningful. If you’re a student at a crossroad between uncertainty about the future and the pressure to make immediate and huge life decisions, tune in to hear a message of acceptance for where you are right now, boosted with hope for your future and insight on how to get there.

While many of us are prone to a faulty and often crippling belief that our lives can’t change unless we make radical changes, we might find ourselves scoffing at the idea that miniscule adjustments can make dramatic shifts. On today’s episode of Success is Subjective, you’ll hear the powerful and inspiring story of keynote speaker, Jon Paul Crimi and the ways in which his life has changed dramatically, largely thanks to a consistent practice of breathwork. Growing up in Irish gang territory on the south shore of Massachusetts, where fighting and crime were a part of everyday life, no one would have predicted that Jon Paul Crimi’s life would forever be changed through the simple yet profound practice of breathwork. Today, Jon Paul sits down with Joanna to share how he went from substance use disorder and working alongside gang members, to later traveling the world as a coach for prominent celebrity figures such Justin Bieber and Jon Paul’s dear friend, the late Matthew Perry. Through a beautiful combination of authenticity, humor and a no BS approach, Jon Paul’s message today will surely leave you with a refreshed and hopeful outlook on life.
