Somethin' Like Sunday School
Sing a New Song
Music carries a power that transcends mere entertainment—it shapes our spirits, influences our emotions, and can either draw us closer to God or lead us astray. In this soul-stirring conversation, Purpose Williams welcomes longtime friend and gospel artist Demorris Kid Sr. to explore the profound connection between faith and musical expression.
Together, they dive into scripture's perspective on singing, examining how the combination of powerful words and melody creates something uniquely potent in both spiritual warfare and worship. Drawing from Psalms 71:23 and 96:1, they unpack what it means to "sing unto the Lord a new song" and how our musical choices reflect our spiritual condition.
The discussion takes fascinating turns as they share personal stories about growing up in church where music was central to their faith formation. Despite sometimes resenting the long hours of choir practice and services as children, both now recognize how those experiences provided a foundation that kept them anchored even during periods of straying from formal worship.
Demorris offers raw honesty about his journey as a musician, acknowledging that he hasn't always created music that edifies God. His evolution as an artist mirrors his spiritual growth, leading to a deeper understanding of his responsibility to produce content that glorifies Christ rather than simply entertaining audiences. When he describes his current approach as "letting Him come out," listeners get a glimpse of what authentic, Spirit-led creativity looks like.
Perhaps most compelling is their practical advice about being discerning with musical choices—not just for ourselves but for our children. As Purpose powerfully states, "You don't feed them rotten food, do you?" The episode culminates in a live musical performance by Demorris, demonstrating his unique sound and heartfelt lyrics centered on surrender to God's will.
Whether you're a musician, a worship leader, or simply someone who loves music, this conversation will challenge you to consider how your musical consumption and creation aligns with your faith. Subscribe, share, and join us in exploring how we can use the gift of music to glorify God and minister to others.

Speaker 1:It's okay.
Speaker 2:It's alright, purpose Williams. Y'all I don't know, but y'all know my last name. Y'all know who this is. I blame, I blame the Morris.
Speaker 4:Y'all I don't know, but y'all know my last name is Y'all know who this is I blame.
Speaker 2:I blame Demore. Y'all know who this is. Y'all blame, I blame him. Y'all know who this is. You hear him already, right.
Speaker 4:Come on now.
Speaker 2:Today, tonight, whatever time you listen, I have a very special guest Tonight and we're gonna do A couple of new things on this episode. I'm so excited. I'm ready for you guys to experience. I've been calling this man, marcus. How long have we known each other, dad Over?
Speaker 4:30 years, over 30 years, since we was kids growing up.
Speaker 2:I have been calling him Marcus.
Speaker 4:From Lovejoy, from Lovejoy, all the time.
Speaker 2:This is one of the blackest episodes too, because that is a nickname that has nothing to do With his actual name.
Speaker 4:I need to re-ask moms About that. We're going to bring her in. We got to check that.
Speaker 1:We're going to bring her in, because Mark is that's a whole name.
Speaker 2:Right Is a nickname. And I'm thinking Maybe that's his middle name, all this?
Speaker 4:time Nope.
Speaker 2:All this time, sir, introduce yourself To the people.
Speaker 4:Hello everybody, god bless you all. And my name is Drew Morris Kid yeah, senior, that is Drew Morris Kid, senior, and I've been Doing music for a while. I've been knowing Treece for a while. Hold on, I probably shouldn't Say that, should I Treece? Oh, yeah, it's fine, okay, so y'all know her.
Speaker 3:Y'all know who this is Okay.
Speaker 4:But yeah, so, but to make it all make sense, I'm blessed to be here and I got something special for y'all and really we just going to get this thing started up and you know, and get it going. But yeah, Demore's Kid, but yeah, Demore's Kid, Y'all can look me up. I'm on Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, all of those social media platforms.
Speaker 2:All of the above, all of the above, we're going to get right into this episode, both of us being music lovers.
Speaker 2:Oh yeah, and being Christians at the same time, we understand the power of music. Oh yeah, at the same time, we understand the power of music. Oh yeah, the scripture is clear about music and singing. All of the above First. Our focus scriptures are Psalms the 71st chapter and the 23rd verse, and Psalms the 96th chapter and the first verse. We're going to go back and read those to you guys, but I looked up one definition of sing Marcus is a singer as well. I'm sorry, I'm calling Marcus.
Speaker 3:It's okay, it's okay. He's a singer To those who know, they know.
Speaker 4:Like if you know, you know, you know, if you know, you know, if you know, you know.
Speaker 2:But I looked up the definition of sing right. It says to produce musical tones by means of voice. But here's the definition. I love to utter words and musical tones. Uh, as believers also, we understand the power of our words. Come on. So there, there's a strong power. Uh, so much, so right Speaking. As far as word power in the Bible is so very important, we see it first in Genesis. Genesis 1 says in the beginning, god created the heaven and the earth.
Speaker 3:Come on and he did and he did.
Speaker 2:And we see after that verse, we see him speaking to what he had created to return, and so all he does Is speak. And it happens right.
Speaker 1:He tells us To be careful.
Speaker 2:Watch our mouths. He said the tongue Is but a little member, because it's a great fire. If you use it wrong Now, fire can be a fire that devours, or it can be a fire that ignites a thing, a good thing, right? What's another scripture as far as speaking? What's the one that says by your words you're justified or by your words You're messing yourself up?
Speaker 4:Come on now.
Speaker 2:So we see the power of words, even so, in Receiving salvation, yes, part of that process Is it says Confess, confess.
Speaker 4:Open your mouth With your mouth, with your mouth Open your mouth and say it and believe in your heart.
Speaker 2:So we understand the power of words and speaking Now. We understand the power of words and speaking Now, we're adding the power of music. Come on Right.
Speaker 4:Collective.
Speaker 2:Let let's go and you know we talk about this all the time, especially in the black community, and this is, you know, black community. Uh, and this is you know. I'm not trying to go here and be on a soapbox about any of this, but a lot of the music we listen to, we can tell that we listen to it by what's going on in our community right yeah and that's not to say that, uh, as believers, we only have to listen to, uh, gospel music or christian music.
Speaker 2:There are some secular songs, so let's talk about this. We talk about music, right? Yep, yep, yep. And it being a mood setter, right? So when my kids are in a certain way, when they on 10, and I got to bring them down, I play classical music in my room.
Speaker 4:Oh yeah, I tend to play Vivaldi, it's one of my favorites. Tones are really something. It is when you go to speak about stuff like that, like the lightest, easiest tone, could like humble even. You know, not just kids, but adults too, absolutely. I mean tones are really something because they actually go hand in hand with vibrations, absolutely, and frequencies. That's a whole other conversation, a whole other episode, absolutely A whole other episode. But when?
Speaker 2:they're on 10, I tend to play classical music. When I see that they need to pick me up, I will bust some Gracie's Corner real quick. Come on now. So when it's time for them to be crunk in an educational way. Gracie's Corner, he's my girl. We see music also as a mood setter For couples, spouses, and we know what kind of mood we are in. So we're not gonna play. Who's gonna play? Hezekiah Walker? Nah, come on man.
Speaker 4:No, come on man, not in that setting. Oh yeah, we're not gonna play. We're not gonna be playing. Play Hezekiah Walker Now, come on now. No, come on now, not in that setting, oh yeah.
Speaker 2:We're not going to be playing. Power Belongs to God.
Speaker 3:But we do love it, but not in that setting.
Speaker 2:And power does belong to God. In me, power belongs to God, oh yeah, but certain music Come on, that's good. Now, who is your go-to guy? I always feel like Blakey would have Luther Somewhere in the mix, when. So, for the setting, or for. For the setting, let's say you're taking your wife On a, on a. Let's say you set a picnic For her Got it. Taking her on a nice date.
Speaker 4:Well, For For me, with my, or should I say Our, age group, you know there's so many I could actually say, but for one of my go-tos I'm going to tell you Montel Jordan, montel Jordan, montel Jordan, because I'm an oldie, like all the new stuff that's out. I mean, don't get me wrong, some of it is good, but I like the old stuff. It has meaning.
Speaker 2:Absolutely, it sends something.
Speaker 4:You can listen to it and you can actually almost do what the song tell you to do and you'll be good afterwards okay, another episode yes.
Speaker 2:This is another episode as well. Oh yes, I'm going to tell you who my favorite guy is, that's Joe, joe, I love Joe, my playlist, I playlist.
Speaker 4:uh, I got joe montiel, I got some, some luther, I got some sweat on there for our settings, of course, but you, you definitely got to have that for your settings inside of those moments.
Speaker 2:So so shout out to all of that music, that which brought some of us here now, today, therefore, now there is okay but again, we said all that To say and to understand and reiterate the power of what we have going on With the definition that I thought that stuck out to me the most Was to other words and put a melody To it. So we, as believers, already have the songs. And why can I say that we already have the songs we need? Because we have the word of God Come on All we're doing.
Speaker 2:Is putting it to music. Come on, and you know who is Incredible with that, because Now look here, we can go this way too. Some gospel music Isn't really Gospel music. And how can we say that? It does not line up With scripture? He plays on emotions only. Come on Again. A whole nother podcast.
Speaker 4:A whole nother podcast. Now, that's the fourth one.
Speaker 3:Get ready, it's coming, it's coming, get ready, so we need to be Taking notes right. Oh yeah, oh yeah definitely.
Speaker 2:Who was amazing and his amazing steward. That was Donna Lawrence. When I go back and recollect a lot of the songs he did Really all his songs he was literally putting melody to scripture. Come on now, he was putting it to scripture and you can learn scriptures through songs. Come on Right, come on it's like you can learn anything through songs.
Speaker 4:Come on.
Speaker 2:So with all of that, I tend to now, especially now the older I get, I really pay attention to words in the song, whether they're deemed gospel music or secular music.
Speaker 4:We have to listen to what's going on, absolutely so I mean it could be the crunk is of the crunk type of music or the laid back type of music. We still have to listen.
Speaker 2:You got to pay attention to the words we put this out of our spirits. Yes.
Speaker 4:Because you know words or even just the tone of the music itself. And speaking of the tones and music itself, with no words you know a tone or tones could lift you up by itself or it could actually Make you feel down or Unpleasant or get into A sorrow mode, just on tones, with no music.
Speaker 2:With no music we talk about Now. We see you, finna. Make us Do a lot of things. Marcus, you need to chill, okay.
Speaker 3:I'm sorry you finna make us talk about A lot of things.
Speaker 2:I'm sorry, I'm just saying.
Speaker 3:You know and you're into.
Speaker 2:Music theory. Right, we have major chords, we have minor chords. And we only scratching the surface, but minor chords, minor chords, tend to Add a bit of mystery or they can Can deepen the sadness. You got diminished chords All this kind of stuff Matters right, come on. And it can be. Even though the chords be unsettling, they still be beautiful.
Speaker 2:They still be beautiful and that's how we get Drawn into it. I'ma tell you A lot of music. I had to stop listening to A lot of books I got rid of Cause I was an avid reader, which I still read. But you know, when you're a teenager, you're young, you know no responsibility.
Speaker 1:You got all the time In the world to read.
Speaker 3:Oh yeah.
Speaker 2:So a lot of, a lot of books that I was going through lately. I got rid of a lot of them. I didn't even give it to somebody else to read, because it was that, yeah, insane.
Speaker 3:I didn't want to spread the insanity, so same thing with a lot of music.
Speaker 2:I went back and, uh, observed the music some of the music I was listening to, uh, and I noticed that it was a particular song. I used to love it because it was so theatrical and it's by Avril Lavigne. What is that song called? I can't remember the name of it, but she was by herself and I loved it. Like I said, it was very theatrical the 808, the music, the chords, her voice I loved everything about it. But I noticed how it made me feel so I had to get it out of my.
Speaker 4:Come on now Get it out of my playlist.
Speaker 2:Come on now, there's also another song and again it's a beautiful song and sometimes those songs Like we talked about Before we got on Songs have to come out right, correct, if you're an artist or you're a songwriter, if that's the gift that God has given you. You feel like you have to Get that thing out, or he just want to Leave you alone.
Speaker 4:Definitely.
Speaker 2:Another song that I had to stop, I had to take a break from, is called how Many Years by Yeba, beautiful song. I understand the song, I understand why she wrote it it was in honor To her mom. But that song, when I used to listen to it, had me so down and I just couldn't get out of thinking about all the sad things. And we know that the scripture tells us to think on whatsoever things are lovely. Oh, come on, and the scripture is telling us that.
Speaker 2:I mean God knows our things right, yeah, yeah, come on he knows that we can get in certain moods, and the hardest mood To get out of Is one of those downers Is a downer. It's like a sinkhole.
Speaker 4:Yep, it's one of those downers man. Yeah, you be trying to find To pick me up or to get me out. But you be right there and it's like and then, and you know, and really Eight times out From that song, but you listen to another one and it has you right there, and then you're like, okay, you done, made a whole Half a day out of it, exactly, especially how, how music is set up, right, all of the Music applications.
Speaker 2:You got what? Pandora? Oh yeah, apple Music, all of it. And what it does is, I think, it's algorithm.
Speaker 3:Yep you put in a certain song.
Speaker 4:It's gonna bring all those kinds of songs and they're going to bring all of it Absolutely, and it's never ending, which that's not by choice, I mean not by chance, brother.
Speaker 2:Anyway but that song is absolutely beautiful. The wording, especially me appreciating poetry and appreciating lyricism and appreciating people being able to express themselves in a certain way about certain things. Beautiful song, beautiful song. But that thing had me down and it wouldn't let me go Come on, so I had to stop listening to it.
Speaker 4:Yeah.
Speaker 2:And that's just me. That's another instance where Certain things may be a sin to me and not a sin to you. Maybe you can handle it. Maybe it doesn't affect you as it would affect me.
Speaker 4:I think it kind of get a hold of everybody Every now and then, especially being that if you didn't went through some things and you didn't experience people um leaving and um and apart and away from you and not you know the unexpected stuff. So so I think everybody who who have lost somebody, um especially, could uh definitely relate so I don't think it's just you with that. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 2:So I had to start Paying attention to that. Another Artist and it's not to just be, you know, calling people out and name dropping or whatever but Billie Eilish. Billie Eilish's music has some of the most Beautiful.
Speaker 4:Beautifully written Scores, or Billie Ocean.
Speaker 2:Billie Eilish.
Speaker 4:Billie.
Speaker 3:Eilish.
Speaker 2:Yeah, billie Eilish has some of the most beautiful chords, the most beautiful, just music alone. But the words no oh no, absolutely not, not for me okay cause it puts me in the same and. I really you know again, that's just my opinion, but I know it's not for me because, okay, because it puts me in the same and I really you know, again, that's just my opinion, but I know it's not for me because any music that I feel like incites suicide. We tend to romanticize a lot of things.
Speaker 4:A lot of songs now encourage suicide or make it seem like it's this lovely thing and we buying that devil back down them old deals, no, no, no, no, no. And I be listening to stuff like that sometimes, but not on because I want to, or I can have the radio playing and it just come and I'm like, okay, well, like these people actually release this stuff and people actually start loving it and liking it and I'm like, hold on for a minute, I don't want to die you better know and I honestly, a lot of times I see something, I hear something, I honestly feel like I think to myself you know, how can you release this?
Speaker 4:knowing how people, especially to my soak, this stuff up jumping out of a window. Yeah, I ain't gonna jump out.
Speaker 2:No window right even movies I'm gonna get out of my car from dying. We can do a lot of things.
Speaker 2:But, let's get back On the other side, because we'll keep on going. We will keep going. Let's think about King Saul. Right, what episode was that? We talked about King Saul? I think it was called King With a question mark. King Saul Is. He Was the first king, was the first earthly king, physical king of the children of Israel. They wanted a king that they could look at with their eyes and you know this and that. So essentially, he loses the oil for being a king and he had already seen who his replacement was and it made him crazy.
Speaker 2:So, he kept trying to kill the boy. All kind of things kept trying to set him up and and the boy that he was trying to kill, with the man he was trying to kill, was the one that was sent to calm him down. Isn't that crazy and irony. So, uh, to to make his murderous, tortured mind calm down, david was sent in to play the heart for him come on and it was the bible said it was soothing the savage beasts inside of him and and did yeah, so we.
Speaker 2:We understand the power once again music now let's go here.
Speaker 2:Uh, speaking of david, our focal scriptures are coming from, uh, psalms which david is credited a lot for writing, I think like two, like two thirds of song. So here we are, psalms 96 and 1. It says, oh, sing unto the Lord. A new song. Come on, sing unto the Lord who All the earth Sing unto the Lord and bless his name. Right? So I like to Break things down. Of course, spiritually, we always want to be Holy Spirit led as far as the meaning Of scriptures.
Speaker 2:But I like to look At the things Poetically and Grammar wise. The beginning of the Scripture says oh, which in. In the English word we would call it An interjection. It's really getting your attention Like hey.
Speaker 4:Correct.
Speaker 2:Check it out. This song we got to do, it's important. Oh yeah, oh sing, oh sing. That's it.
Speaker 4:A new song.
Speaker 2:A new song intrigued me also Because as we grow, again, as we grow, we go from faith to faith, glory to glory. The song's going to change the songs that we sing, of course, we'll keep, you know, some of the ones that are spiritually correct. But the songs are going to change the more we understand and the deeper we are in Christ, Even us coming as musicians, as people who enjoy music. The songs are going to change that we listen to. So definitely the songs are going to change that we sing.
Speaker 4:Definitely Right. The deeper we are with Christ, the more our relationship matures. Oh, definitely.
Speaker 2:It's going to change, and I see this also as the Lord telling us hey, we don't have to focus on some things anymore. So sing a new song. Sing a new song. Sing a new one. Say something different for yourself.
Speaker 1:Come on, we see music. A new song. A new song, we see a new song.
Speaker 2:Songs can be used for praise and worship, which that's at the very forefront. But songs are also a weapon. Songs are also a weapon.
Speaker 4:I agree.
Speaker 2:The scripture was telling the women who couldn't have babies To sing, and that was gonna give life To their womb. Come on To sing, so we understand the power. Again. I'm gonna keep on saying that A lot of times in the episode. Come on, we understand the power of singing, sing and singing the right thing, singing to the Lord.
Speaker 4:A new song and Hello, hello, sing and singing, the right thing, singing to the Lord.
Speaker 2:A new song, hello, hello. Are you listening? Are you listening? Come on now. And the Lord is so kind In the sense that he tells us what to do, and he's telling us Because he's already Giving us what to do. Come on.
Speaker 4:Right Instructions. Are you listening? He's already giving it.
Speaker 2:He's giving it to us what to do. He's giving it. He's giving it to us what to do. He's so kind. But he also makes us, he tells us to do it In a certain way, because he knows We'll do it that way. So I tell my children, okay, if y'all, if y'all Do this or do that, then we're going to do this. So in their minds, okay, I held up my end of the bargain you got to do, come on now, what you said Hold your corner Before that word die.
Speaker 2:So it makes them have a boldness Like, okay, definitely I did my part. Now you obligated to me your what?
Speaker 4:Your word Stand on up.
Speaker 2:Your word Stand on it.
Speaker 4:Stand on it.
Speaker 2:So when he's giving us His word right and we put a song to it, he knows, god knows what he's doing, cause he knows that we'll take in our spirit, we'll take in music as far as songs and melodies and tunes, more so sometimes than just just hearing the word, but together to the two of them combined, combined jesus of nazareth of nazareth the two of them combined. I love that.
Speaker 4:I'm Nazareth.
Speaker 2:Keep on coming Go on Mighty.
Speaker 1:Mighty.
Speaker 3:I love it.
Speaker 2:Man and Marcus and I grew up in church together. Definitely, and we had what would be called communications right.
Speaker 4:Oh yeah.
Speaker 2:That means we would church over to another church, church at another church together.
Speaker 4:Together.
Speaker 2:And a big part of that was All the choirs.
Speaker 1:Singing a song. Yeah, yeah, we were there, for we were there for hours. Y'all was hard.
Speaker 4:We would be there for hours, hours.
Speaker 2:And I was. The music was. Literally Hours, literally Hours, hours, hours, and I you know, when you young you don't understand it fully. But you know I wouldn't trade it for the world.
Speaker 4:Me either. And I was just telling you know, one of my coworkers the other day. I said, man, regardless of what anybody said about me, you know, all of those extra peers would be like man, but y'all stay in church. But I'm going to tell you, it was the church going to church, coming to church, and the word and the praying Is what saved me. That's what still got me here today. So thank.
Speaker 3:God for church. Thank God for the word.
Speaker 2:I say this all the time as well, the crew, and I talk about it all the time.
Speaker 4:I thank God for that.
Speaker 2:Absolutely. When you're young, you just don't get it. We gotta be here all this time. I used to be mad. I used to hate we go Friday night church and I used to hate it. I'm going to tell you why I hated it and I'm just going to tell you how young I was. Because that Friday night or was it Sunday night, it was either Friday night or Sunday night.
Speaker 4:It probably was both for us it probably was both Look.
Speaker 2:So it was. I think it was the night that all my favorite shows came on like a roll, so it was Full House. It was what's the one with?
Speaker 4:all the kids, man, I'll remember this. The Simpsons used to come on. I used to miss everything. I used to be like man just let us watch just 15 minutes yeah.
Speaker 2:Family Matters and Boy Meets World. It was that night when all those things came on in a row and we would be at church and I'd be so mad Cause we was gonna miss it.
Speaker 4:And it was on to the next episode, so you had to miss that episode. Yeah, to try to catch up with that episode and we didn't have YouTube people.
Speaker 2:Yeah, I was just finna say we didn't have YouTube To go. Re-catch back up, right and you can have Netflix to binge and see them all. None of that, people. You hear me. We can see it now, but then back then it was.
Speaker 4:Y'all young folks blessed.
Speaker 2:Right, it was a different anticipation, when you was seeing one episode and then the next one you got to.
Speaker 4:you know it was a built-up anticipation. Definitely.
Speaker 3:I used to come standing.
Speaker 2:Ooh, I used to be so mad. It was Choir rehearsal.
Speaker 4:Choir rehearsal Youth practice Youth practice. And then Friday night, and then you had to go Saturday sometime To prepare for Sunday To prepare for Sunday, and then you got Sunday. And then you got the Witnessing, all of the above.
Speaker 2:Oh my, I'm talking about a full schedule Sunday school.
Speaker 4:Then you got to still stay To the, to the noonday service. Yes, you have the noond day service. You got the Three o'clock communication and some churches After that.
Speaker 2:They went back to church. They went to church All day. No, was some of it overkill? Sure, it really was, but I mean it really was.
Speaker 4:If you're gonna overkill.
Speaker 1:Something Right, it might still be a good thing.
Speaker 2:We thank God For the word I'm telling you Like that's real talk. It kept me from doing a lot of things. It kept me, and even when I did it, it kept me. Come on.
Speaker 4:I was still kept and I didn't have a taste For a lot of things Bye, bye Right now.
Speaker 2:Growing up, and I know that it was.
Speaker 4:It was coming up in church Having prayer and prayers, you know, oh yeah, real, real prayer warriors.
Speaker 3:Real live prayer and prayers, and I mean you talking about somebody Get a prayer through or else.
Speaker 4:Absolutely. It's back to the altar, you go. Okay, hello, man, they had us up, man, they had us up Over there on the altar. Baby, I'll never forget Plenty of days, plenty of nights. Now we did.
Speaker 2:We did a prayer line and Every now and then we would all do the altar, but it wasn't like Going back up there.
Speaker 3:It was just.
Speaker 4:Passing the side that night. He ain't got it yet. That was you mark. Send him on back up. I just came back from up here and all right, he good sitting on begging and I got that. Look at my eyes, still he ain't got it. Send him back up there. All right, I got it now I got it up in there acting up. I know it really. It really't me acting up. I was just kind of like I'm going to use the word overkill again.
Speaker 4:It was a little overkill for me. I was like man. Thank the Lord anyway. Okay, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, now I'm telling you like, now you get it.
Speaker 2:You know what I'm saying, you understand now. I had a guy who came to me. He and I went to elementary school, elementary school and I didn't see this man After we got out of Elementary school. I didn't see him Until college and we was, we was up there At Bishop State and he came up to me and you know my eyes are blessed, they're very blessed.
Speaker 2:Come on now and sometimes it takes me a minute To focus on who that is. Come on. So this guy Walked up to me and my eyes wouldn't focus on his face to save my life until he you know he started talking or whatever and I was like, oh, this, this is my, my dude from elementary school. So he was like man, it's good to see you and it's good to see you still safe. He's like man. I wish I wish I had that when I was growing up, so that that's always a testimony when we would come across a lot of our classmates so you know, still to this day, still to this day, still to this day.
Speaker 2:Yeah.
Speaker 4:Like kid, can you pray for me? Kid, Pray for me. I can pray with you, Over you. That's right.
Speaker 2:All of you.
Speaker 4:Yes, because I mean, but they still tell me that to this day too, and I'd be like man, I'd be like yeah, I mean, it's just God a keeper, he's a keeper, okay, even when the scriptures are trained up the child in the way you should go.
Speaker 2:Come on, we's all you want to depart from it. So even in trying to and I tell people all the time there was a time when I wasn't going to church at all. It was a strange time. My flesh was cool with it, but of course my spirit was come on and my peers were not cool with come on. They were really upset about it, come on. And again, that that's about circle, and I know them because because of Christ, you know, growing up, I think everybody then you know, went through those gaps.
Speaker 4:Yeah, yeah, everybody, I think.
Speaker 2:I could actually say that with a little confidence.
Speaker 4:I think everybody been through those types of gaps but I always tell people.
Speaker 2:You know, when I wasn't going to church or whatever, I was not crazy enough to fully let it go. I played on the edge.
Speaker 4:I looked at it and I was like, oh enough to fully let it go. I played on the edge. I looked at it.
Speaker 2:And I was like, oh, that's very interesting right there, but I'm just not going to do it.
Speaker 4:I'm just not going to jump, and I'm talking about close encounters, what they say close calls, but God is a keeper. And.
Speaker 2:I'm thankful for that.
Speaker 4:I know I'm thankful, yeah.
Speaker 2:Growing up in it and understanding it now even more so. It's just, you know, it was a journey and it's just been amazing. It's just been amazing, just an amazing thing. So let's go here. We know you now as an artist. Let me ask you this question. Let's do this what is your go-to song when worshiping or needing godly encouragement?
Speaker 4:I'm going to say for the new school, since we, we are in 2025. I can go old real quick and absolutely, that's usually where I'm at.
Speaker 4:But yeah, but just so we Don't lose nobody, I'm going to say Travis Green, and that's Made a way, because he's still Showing me his hand Daily. You guys, he's still making a way and he's still Showing me, like, even when we don't think he's going to move, or even when we don't see it happening. Right when you don't see it and right when you don't think it's going to happen, it happens, he, he happens, he happens.
Speaker 4:He happens and and he always makes a way, always no, still still through it all. And so my answer is um made a way, uh, travis green travis green.
Speaker 2:Yeah, I love travis. Yeah, yeah, I'm gonna tell you who. And this is, you know, depending on the day. One of my favorite go-to's is is fred hammond. Oh come on, the song called show yourself strong. Oh yeah, I was, I actually played man. I played that a while back.
Speaker 4:I was trying to catch Is Fred Hammond. Oh, come on the song called Show Yourself Strong. You ever heard that song before? Oh yeah, I actually played man. I played that a while back. I was trying to catch myself. Yeah, yeah, except on the sticks, and I was up in that thing, show Yourself.
Speaker 2:Strong Is definitely one of my go to's, so if y'all get a chance you never heard that song before you need to catch Fred Hammond. Fred Hammond, fred Hammond. Show yourself strong, he's still going ain't he, he's still going.
Speaker 4:Oh man, he's still going. Shout out to Fred Hammond, yeah.
Speaker 2:Fred Hammond for sure. Like their whole album Pages of Life, you come out of no Skip. Look at this guy.
Speaker 4:I love it. I'm ready to go into a song. I see you Down around A no.
Speaker 1:Skip album, and that's good.
Speaker 2:Definitely Pages of Life. Red Hammond and what's another one? I do Open Up my Heart, yolanda.
Speaker 4:Adams, that will forever and always be a good one, classic.
Speaker 2:And it's a very melodious song, very jazzy, and I think that is to get the people's attention. Once you get in there, you really listen to those words. The lover of my soul, the captain of my seat.
Speaker 4:I mean but that's just like the Donnie McClurkin. I mean Do we fall down? Because sometimes we do fall, but we get back up.
Speaker 3:That's scripture we get Back.
Speaker 2:Up. See, that's what I'm saying, it's scripture. The scripture says A just man falls seven times. Come on, but you keep on getting up. Come on, baby, you can't lay that in.
Speaker 3:You can't lay that in. Get up out of there, get out of there.
Speaker 2:Get out of there, be not entangled, Be not entangled.
Speaker 4:The yoke of bondage again. All right now you finna stir the word up.
Speaker 2:That's scripture, though.
Speaker 4:That's good scripture.
Speaker 2:And it is delicious.
Speaker 4:And that is, it's delicious. I'll give you the God for that. I mean that.
Speaker 2:The next question right here. Let's see, let's see how we, let's see your transparency on this one. As a musician, right as an artist, have you always done music that edifies God?
Speaker 4:Good question. Truthfully, I can say I've always done music and I tend to do music what's inside of me, if it's in my heart for me to go record, it would be something that I could shed light to people. So I would say yes, because if it's in my spirit to do and to let out, that's for, that's for me, to let people hear it and let them see the light from where I'm trying to come from.
Speaker 2:So I'm going to say, yeah, you have always said music that edifies God.
Speaker 4:Not every single song I have not telling the honest truth. Really. But. But I can say what's inside of you will eventually come out and I just like to do music that that's good, that feels good, and if it's good to me, I'm gonna let it out. Now am I proud of?
Speaker 3:all of the songs I can say that that I've ever done.
Speaker 4:No, um, because it wasn't in line but you know, now but now yeah, I know better you know, I, I, I tend to to let him speak to me. When I'm writing now and I tend to let him use me for I can be a a real light, so people can actually see and hear, and that's critical.
Speaker 2:That's critical. Being a gospel artist. Ain't no other way to do gospel music correct outside of being led by the Holy Spirit correct outside of that you can't mix and tangle both that's for sure because that's like it's one of those things you could record.
Speaker 4:you know what you feel, but what message are you really giving out, like, what message are you trying to send to people? Well, you could record, you know whatever you want to record, but what are you putting out for people, the masses to hear?
Speaker 2:And that leads us here, like let me ask you this, right, what do you want to accomplish? And I believe you really just already answered this question with the sound that God has given you. Let me ask you this now, let's be clear, because you did just answer that question With this certain sound and this certain newfound understanding of responsibility as a believer.
Speaker 4:Come on now. To only I love it To only put out music that edifies Christ Right.
Speaker 2:What do you think is unique about your sound and your way of expressing and communicating God to people through the sound that God has given you?
Speaker 4:Actually easy answer. Well, I like to, well, okay.
Speaker 2:You dropped the mic right there. He's the answer.
Speaker 4:There we go. Boom, that's a message, go ahead, you know Well, okay, so to be transparent for real. What comes to me, you know, be transparent for real. Um, what comes to me, you know, and what's been coming to me lately, has been trying to make music. Not only was good for me, because you, you, you have to make music for yourself first. You can make music for others, but it has to be good for you to be able to really let it out so people can gravitate towards it. And especially when doing music for God, for Christ, you want to make sure it's there.
Speaker 4:And for me, what makes me stand different into my lane from what I'm doing, is I have this rawness at the moment when I do it. It's just a raw thing, and I'm going to give you all a little piece of it later on in the show of exactly what I'm talking about. But it's this thing when I'm doing it, and he's already flowing through me and it just comes out, you just got to kind of like hear it and just feel it for yourself. But, um, it's just one of those things, it's, it's a raw thing, that that I just do. And like, I know it's from him, you know, so I just let it. I let him come on out. You know he's already inside. I just let him come out. Perfect, while I'm doing it and that's that's.
Speaker 2:It's always a beautiful thing to be a vessel for the lord and to be a conduit for him. Uh, and the thing about it like he is giving us all a uniqueness, correct as far as the gifting?
Speaker 2:that's giving us now, the giftings are the same. You got a lot of people the same. You got a lot of people that can sing. You got a lot of people that can write Right. A lot of people that can dance, correct People that can, you know, do whatever, but even in all those things being the same giftings, the uniqueness is like a fingerprint to me, it will always be his own, if we're true it feel true.
Speaker 2:It feel true To how he gives it to us, because there are A lot of copycats, but we can always tell when somebody is copying, like okay, back in the day I'm going to tell you how old we are. You remember when we were young and we used to have those carbon sheets, like if somebody Was absent, right? I know I had a math class At Clark Clark Middle School. I had this math teacher named Mrs Wink and she was a very, she was an amazing teacher and if somebody was out, like one of the kids was out, right, and she was a class where we took notes. Like this is a math class.
Speaker 2:And we took notes like yeah, we took notes like she was lecturing, but she never made it feel like lecturing, but she was very detailed and she wanted our notes to be detailed, so somebody was absent right, we would have to get one. Of us would get the carbon they call carbon something but, anyway.
Speaker 2:So you put the paper. There was this piece of paper that you put under your original sheet. So you're doing the writing, you're taking notes, but the the paper would copy what you wrote on another paper. So that way, whatever notes you wrote, whoever was missing that day could get notes from the class. But you could always tell. I said that to say this. As far as copycatting, you could always tell which one was the original, of course, and the other one was a copy correct, it was never as clear.
Speaker 4:Yeah, it was the original.
Speaker 2:I can't remember the name so myself the uh you know what I'm talking about, don't you? Definitely yeah, definitely so y'all see how old we are in the lord. But but, that's why. That's why it's important to be, you know, the original, you that how god gave it to you definitely definitely you got to be the original, the message is not gonna be as clear. Yeah, it's how he gave it to you. Imagine David Not playing the harp, like Like the Lord gave him to. Would he have sued the savage beast? Oh, no, no, I don't believe so.
Speaker 4:And that's kinda Awesome On you know and how you saying it and what you're saying, because when he give you something you gotta do it, you should do it, you better do it. But thing is, when he give you something For you to do, you have to let him Work in you. So it come out Accordingly.
Speaker 2:So it come out accordingly. And here's another thing too, right, and we gonna let you, we gonna let you Get to the get to the come on if you don't do it right the lord told you to do a thing. You don't do it because his word can't turn. Return to him void. Somebody else gonna do. Somebody else gonna do it every time. Somebody else gonna do it because that was what god wanted out in the earth. Somebody else is gonna do it we even see this in the secular world.
Speaker 2:There was a interview I saw a couple of days ago on tiktok about michael jackson, right. So michael jackson said that, um, whenever a song came to his mind, he did it immediately. And you know why he said he did. And this is a secular, secular music, and if we would take it as seriously as Michael Jackson did, michael Jackson said that he did it immediately Because If he didn't do it, god was going to give it to Prince and Prince was going to do it.
Speaker 4:Wow.
Speaker 2:So I haven't watched it, but I'm going to look for that Now. Look how seriously he takes that.
Speaker 4:And this is secular music Right, right, but that Nah, that's pretty, that's heavy, hard and it that's yeah, and we see that in scripture all the time too, where the people who are not believers get it and it grieves holy spirit.
Speaker 2:That's not to say that michael jackson wasn't a believer. What I'm saying is, if he's taking it that seriously and this is secular music how much more seriously should we take it? Come on, and this is secular music. How much more seriously should we take it? Come on, and this is a godly assignment come on now. Come on now and this is a godly assignment, and and that it is yeah so I?
Speaker 2:I am a person who's not very um, I'm not. I would say that I'm an introvert, right or uh, the spirit of introvert is upon me and I'm not a person who's necessarily, uh, just just out there. You know, I very much love the background, I very much love being behind the scenes, I very much love encouraging people to do, you know, what god has sent for them to do I feel like that is a part of my gifting, but I have to to.
Speaker 2:a lot of times I force myself to go ahead and do it, in the sense that I don't want to let my shyness or my introvertism keep me from doing what God told me to do Come on.
Speaker 4:now Come on. I don't want that on my head on my shoulders Come on, come on, because we need my shoulders. Come on, come on, because we need our blessings from the Lord.
Speaker 2:And we need to do like the scriptures. They'll go you, therefore, to all the earth, and he's going to send us to all the earth in different ways, because when God gives you an assignment, that assignment is not for you, it's for the people that are assigned to you. Come on. And I don't want casualties, we don't need On my watch. Casualties Because I didn't do what I was supposed to do. Yes, lord, definitely that. You mean that.
Speaker 4:Jeff, for real, and not the way that I was supposed to do it.
Speaker 2:Oh yeah, and it's so funny Because I love to laugh. That's a part of my personality come on at first I used to think that I'd be like Lord, these people gonna be annoyed with all the laughing that I do. But the scripture comes to me all the time laughter does good like a medicine and so for some people, it'll work. Some people it may not work, but I just have to do it for the people that are assigned to me and are assigned to this assignment. So that's good.
Speaker 4:now that's good. Yeah, we just you know, that's good.
Speaker 2:now we encourage you to do. Hey, do what he told you to do. Right, and we don't want the delays.
Speaker 4:And that's what brings us here. Right, that's what brings us here, you know.
Speaker 2:Yeah.
Speaker 4:The assignment delays, and that's what brings us here. Right, that's what brings us here. You know, yeah, the assignment of others, man, I mean I felt like, but this was one of those things, especially with this, this song he gave me, I was like, but this is one of those things that I don't want to just sit on because I you know.
Speaker 4:But, like I said, I previously recorded like I don't even know how many songs I think I've ever recorded I'm definitely in the hundreds, now for sure. But now where I am in this place in my life, in this time in my life, where God is leading me, I want to be able to create music and edify him and let him lead and speak, fight him and let him lead and speak. So I definitely, I definitely want to be one of the ones to have my own sound, my own lane to be able to present to the world, to let them know who I am, but still to let them know who God is and he's still able and the blood is still real.
Speaker 2:Okay, okay, okay, okay, okay, okay. We definitely the whole goal. Okay, right, okay, the whole goal is to present God. Like you said, the Winans had a song a long time ago. Don't see me, see Jesus.
Speaker 4:Exactly.
Speaker 2:So that's you know, that's who we do it for, but I really enjoyed you on this episode. It brought out a lot of things.
Speaker 4:Come on, and this is just the first people, just the first one Whoa, whoa, whoa.
Speaker 2:I got a few takeaways. I've never said this on here before, I don't believe, but I got a few takeaways. Pay attention to the music you're listening to.

Speaker 3:If you tryna do the right thing, follow me the right way, I say okay, what can you miss in life? If you wanna change your life, god can just say yes, yes to your will and yes to your way. I say I'll obey, yes to your will and yes to your way. I say I'll obey. He's a magnificent God. He's a forgiving God. I just wanna tell you all He'll pick you up when you fall. You have to make a decision, or you gon' listen and take the position. God gave me a vision. He gave me a mission. I had to repent. I added faith with it, so I know I'm safe with him. Long as I'm praised, then I'm praised and we gon' vacate with it. Lord, protect me from the unseen and the ones that's hatin' on me, cause God's way more and I say he's way more.
