Welcome And The Influence Question

What's up everybody and welcome back to your favorite podcast, something like Sunday school. I'm Praverse Williams and I'm excited about this for several reasons, which I'm I'm always excited about all the episodes because it's the word of God. I mean, you know, wasn't that to be excited about? But this this particular episode uh checked me, right? Checked me big. So this one is it's entitled Under the Influence. And whether we believe it or not, we are always under the influence of something. Or it could be our emotions, it could be uh drugs, it could be people, it could be whatever. So this this this episode, we're gonna learn uh a couple of things about what influence is, who's influencing us, and who we are influencing. We're gonna get right into it. Um, I hope you got your Bible out. I got mine. Uh I am reading out of the KJV. It's my favorite version. It's majestic. I mean, it's really, it really, it really speaks to me. It scratches the itch, you know. It tickles my fancy. We're gonna start in uh 1 Timothy, which is in the New Testament. This is Paul, Apostle Paul writing to Timothy, and we're gonna read the fourth chapter, uh, starting at the 7th verse, and then we're gonna jump down to the 12th verse. The end part of the 7th verse uh says, Exercise thyself rather unto godliness. This is Apostle Paul talking to a young, a young minister named Timothy. Verse 12 says, Let no man despise thy youth, but be thou an example of the believer in word and conversation and charity and spirit and faith and purity. Defining Influence With Real Stakes

back to you, you know, like second nature. You already knew what I was talking about and where I was going. Let's first talk about what influence is. I I wrote notes this time, y'all. I'm gonna try not to let them uh throw me off because I'm usually not a notewriter. I'm trying to grow, you know, just come come on, come on with me. Uh, influence, what's influence? The capacity of persons or things to be a compelling force that affects the what? The actions, behaviors, the opinions, and those things of that nature of other people. I want to tell you a quick story, right quick. Um uh my little sister, my my baby sister, which I call her affectionately little girl, you know, not because I think she's not grown, she's just always gonna be a little girl to me. She told me uh one time when she was young that she wanted to be just like me. So here I am, up against uh the reality of what influence really is. And you know, at first I was kind of flattered. I was like, oh, you know, my little sister wants to be like me, that's so sweet. And then I got scared. Why did you get scared? Purpose, go ahead and ask me. I got scared because I was like, am I somebody that she should be like? Am I somebody who she should want to be influenced

My Sister Wanted To Be Me

by? Right? On the surface, and I'm I'm being a little transparent here. On the surface, I was cool. I was good. But when she told me that, I was like, well, what about the secret things I got going on behind, you know, behind everything. I understood then that that would get on her too. You know what I'm saying? Or he had the potential to get on her too, because we understand oil flows from the head, right? Um, we understand that even looking at the setup of the body of Christ. We as believers are the body of Christ, but Christ is the head. He has to be the head because that's what influences the body, right? So it comes from the top on down, right? So I understood that whatever I had going on, whether front or behind had the potential to influence and get on my little sister. So it checked me, right? And I was like, mmm, I need to start getting things, things together, you know, and like I don't want her to certain things I don't want her to deal with because she out here trying to be like me, trying to be influenced by me. And I didn't, you know, you know, some things. I'm just trying to be honest. I didn't want her to be wrestling with and dealing with. So I understood then that there were things about me that I needed to start changing, right? Let's let's keep going. Maybe that's just me by myself. The first question we're gonna get into, and this is as a believer, who is influencing me? And as a believer, who should be influencing me, right? Let's let's of course be going to scripture. Let's go to scripture, let's see what happens in scripture is as it concerns influence. Let's go over here to

The Danger Of Wrong Spiritual Voices

1 Kings, the 13th chapter, the 15th, through the 24th verse. Let's let's read that. This this is an account about a young prophet who was had specific instructions by God to go to Bethel. There were certain things that he was gonna have to do, right? Who told him? God told him, right? So at this moment, he should have been hanging off the Lord's words. He should have said, you know, I'm being influenced by the Lord. This is what I'm gonna do. I'm gonna do what he told me to do. Let's see what happens to him. We're gonna read pieces of it, but you, you know, you go back and read the whole thing, right? He comes across, he he does, he does at first, he does what the Lord tells him. He goes to Beltha, he does what he needs to do, right? And he gets the attention of an older prophet. And when we think older prophet, we think honor, right? We think we think somebody that we can listen to, right? Let's see what happens. So what the Lord told him to do, go down here and do what you gotta do with this city, what I told you to do. Don't eat, don't drink. And when you get ready to leave, go another way. What did he tell him? Don't what? Don't eat, don't, and go what? Another way. So let's see what happens when he runs into this prophet. So the older prophet is so taken with him that he sins for him by his sons. Let's see what happens. Uh let's go with verse 14. Let's start there. And he went after the man of God and found him sitting under an oak tree. And he said unto him, Art thou the man of God that came is from Judah? And the young prophet said, I am. Now we talked about him originally a couple of seasons ago. And that's when, you know, I used to like to name the people that didn't have necessarily names. So we called him Sebastian. So let's call him Sebastian again. So Sebastian said, Yeah, that's that was me. The older prophet says, Then the older prophet, here he goes. Then he said unto him, Come home with me and eat bread. Hmm? What did the Lord tell him? Don't what? Don't what? And go well. Let's see what happens. He says, Come home with me and eat bread. And he said, This is Sebastian now, I may not return with thee, nor go in with thee, neither will I eat bread nor drink water with thee in this place. For it was said to me by the word of the Lord. Who told him? The Lord. It was said to me by the word of the Lord. Don't what? Thou shalt eat no bread, nor drink water there, nor turn again to go by the way that thou camest. He said unto him, This is the old prophet talking now. I'm a prophet also, and thou art, as thou art. And an angel spake unto me by the word of the Lord. Listen. What happened? Who was speaking to Sebastian? The Lord. Who did the old prophet say? An angel of the Lord. Which one? Which one trumps? Who? The Lord. The Lord. So this man, the older prophet, is lying. At least he had the nerve not to say the Lord told him. He said, An angel of the Lord told him. I'm a prophet also, as thou art. And an angel spake unto me by the word of the Lord, saying, Bring him back with thee unto thine house that he may eat bread and drink water. But what he lied unto him. Lord have mercy. We on verse 19. So he went back with him. Sebastian, what you doing, boy? He went back with the old prophet. And he did what? He did eat bread in his house, and he drank water, the very thing that the Lord told him not to do. And it came to pass as they sat at the table that the word of the Lord came unto the prophet that brought him back. Now he finna speak the real word of the Lord. This is the old prophet. And guess what he gonna say? And he cried unto the man of God that came from Judah, saying, Thus said the Lord, he ain't say the angel of the Lord that time, Thus said the Lord, for as much as thou hast disobeyed the mouth of the Lord and has not kept the commandment which the Lord thy God commanded thee, but came as back and has eaten bread and drunk water in the place of which the Lord did say to thee, Eat no bread and drink no water, thy carcass, thy carcass, yeah, shall not come into the sepulchre of thy fathers. What has happened? Do we know what a carcass is? We know what a carcass is. Thy carcass, he's telling Sebastian, his carcass won't even return to the land of his people. What is a carcass? It's a dead body. Good Lord Sebastian. Look look the price he paid for not listening to Holy Spirit, for not listening to the Lord, for being under the influence of an older prophet. My God, to the degree of losing his life. Sebastian, Sebastian, now this is Sebastian is a prophet. So he's he's a believer. He's a believer. And as believers, we we should be led by who? By Holy Spirit. Even if we feel like we are listening to somebody who's been in the faith longer than this, who is who is honored among prophets, if that person is saying something that is against what the Lord has told you, I I beseech you. I beseech you to continue on with what the Lord has told you. Now we just discover what happens or what can happen, all the way to the degree of loss of life when we are influenced by the wrong people. Now, now let's see. Let's see, let's see. Let's go to Hebrews 12. Let's see what can happen when we do what we're supposed to do. Hebrews is in the second testament, the new testament. Let's go to Hebrews 12 and 2.

Looking To Jesus Over Emotions

you. Hebrews 12 and 2 says, Wherefore sin we also are compassed about with the great cloud of witnesses. Let us lay aside every weight in the sin which does so easily possess us. And let us run with patience the race that is set before us. These are instructions for us. And who should we be looking to? Looking unto Jesus, the author and the finisher of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the Father. Now you say, what does it have to do with us listening to Holy Spirit, being led the create way as a believer? Let's take us back now, right quick, to the Garden of Gates enemy. So Paul tells us what to look to who? To Jesus, who is the author and the finisher of our faith. Jesus being God in the body, being the perfect example for us as a believer. What is important about this scripture, you might be wondering. What is important about it? Let's go back to the Garden of Gates enemy, where we see Jesus, right? Jesus is about to take on the sins of the world by way of the cross. He's in a human, physical body. He is about to experience some pain and he knows it, right? What does he tell the Lord? He says, if you would take this bit of cup from me, take it. But then what does he follow that with? Nevertheless, I'm going with your will. It's your will for me to do this. It's your will for me to do this. So he does not listen to his emotions. He does not listen to the fear of what is about to place take place. He knows pain is coming. He knows it, right? But who, who, whose will does he go with? Whose will is he influenced by? The Lord. And look what it says right here. This is why we can look unto who? Jesus, the who? The author, the finisher of our faith. Who, for the joy that was set before him, endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. What does that have to do with me? You might say. This is why. This is why. This very, that very act right there, letting himself be led by the Holy Spirit rather than his emotions in fear, it's the reason why we can be believers. We can be adopted into the beloved. That's the reason. So had he not, had he not allowed himself to be led of the Holy Spirit, where would we be? Huh? Where would we be? So we're understanding now that what we do affects others. Not just us, right? Not just us. Look at all the sons that we have been missed out on. Look at all the sons. Look at all the privilege. We wouldn't have to be able, we wouldn't be able to have right standing with the Lord. We wouldn't be able to go before his throne boldly. Huh?

Who Do We Influence Next

The next question says, well, who do I, as a believer, influence? Who do I influence? And is my influence godly? Or is it deadly? Is it godly or deadly? Let's go over here to Genesis. We're doing some reading today. Let's go over here to Genesis. We're going to Genesis 3. Who's in Genesis 3, you might ask? Some of y'all know. I know you know. Ain't it now you know? Yeah, you do. Over here in Genesis 3. We're gonna see what happens, right? Genesis 3. Right here we have Adam and we have Eve. Right? We're gonna go to the 7th verse. Let's go there. They now Adam and Eve have received instructions not to eat. It's something about that, Eden, right? Eating

Adam And Eve And Deadly Influence

Eden can transfer into ingesting, meaning taking on, taking in, right? He told them not to, they could eat from all the other trees that was in the garden. And I know that had some delicious fruit. This is a this is a land of perfection. I know it was delicious. And you have access to all these other trees with this one tree of the knowledge of good and evil, don't touch it. Don't eat from it, right? So the instructions were clear, right? The instructions were clear. But what happens? What happens? They hear the instructions of somebody else. After the Lord has told them, they hear the instructions of somebody else. Huh? They listen to who? They listen to the enemy. They listen to the enemy. The Lord told them that if they ate from that tree, they was gonna die. And you know the enemy told them, you ain't gonna die. In complete contrast to what the Lord had said. Let's see. Verse 7, this is after they've eaten. It says, and the eyes of them were both open. And they knew that they were naked, and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves aprons. I thought that was that was an interesting choice of words, that their eyes were open. We know that they wasn't walking around with their eyes closed. Huh? They could see. They saw each other. We know that they can see because Adam said, Hey, you did your big one, Lord. When you made that girl right there, oh she flesh and my flesh. She bone and my bone. He saw her, and it was good and very good to him too, right? What happened? They died. That's what happened. The scripture before says they were naked and unashamed. No, they're naked and what? Ashamed. They died. That's what happened. People like to say, oh, the Lord was lying, didn't die. They died, they died several deaths. Several. And and we're gonna look at the list. We're gonna look and see what happens, right? And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day. Now, earlier in the chapter, it tells us that this was the norm. This is the relationship they had. And they was they were ready to receive, ready to be intimate, ready to talk to God. Now what happens? They heard them walking in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife did what? Hid themselves. That was a definite relationship between them and the Lord. How you go from welcoming to now you're afraid and you're running and trying to hide. That was death. Jesus. Him and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God. Among the trees of the garden. Now, can they really hide from the Lord? No. But let's continue. Verse 9. And the Lord God called unto Adam and said unto him, Where art thou? The Lord know exactly where they are. He there's a change. He knows. You know, you ever be with somebody that you are intimate with, and I don't necessarily mean sexually. Just say you and your good friend. You know, y'all hanging out, you you watching a movie, you enjoying yourself, and you you notice that they not there in the room with you. They right there, and they not there. And and we when I was coming up, you we say something like a penny for your thoughts. What you got going on? Where you at? Huh? They right there, but they not there. So this is what the Lord is saying. You here, but what's going on? He know what's going on. But it's it's again speaking to the depth of a relationship. Hmm. And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden. This is Adam. And I was what? Afraid because I was naked and I hid myself. And he said, God saying, Is not, who told thee that thou was naked? Has thou eaten of the tree where I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat? And look, really, let's go back. And that's so good, Lord. He said, I was naked and afraid I hid myself. So it went from us, me and my wife hid ourselves to who? I hid myself. Why? There's a death in that relationship. There's a death in that relationship between him and his wife. Hmm? What influence are we under? And God said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Has thou eaten of the tree whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat? And the man said, The woman. The woman whom thou gavest to me. She gave me other tree, and I did eat. And the Lord God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, This serpent beguiled me, and I did eat. Look at how this unity, this division, death. Now let's look and see what happened. Now we get to see some more of the death in detail. And the Lord God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above our cattle, and above every beast, not just some of them, all the cattle, every beast of the field, upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust. You dragging the face of the earth. And thus shall thou eat when? How many of thy days? All of thy days. That's a death. Verse 15 says, And I will put enity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed. And it shall what bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. Look at all this confusion. There's no more oneness. There's no more unity. There's enity. It means angst. We got a chip on our shoulder against each other now. Huh? Then it's getting down in the generations. You in the seed too? That's a lot of death. Verse 16. And to the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception. And sorrow thou shalt bring forth children. And desire, and thy shall, and thy desire shall be to thy husband. And he shall rule over thee. Girl, contractions is because of you. Hormone and imbalances because of y'all, what y'all had going on. Girl, verse 17. And then to Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, because you was influenced by the wrong one, and has eaten of the tree of which I commanded thee, saying thou shalt not eat of it. Cursed is the ground for thy sake. Not only have we destroyed us, even the ground, got to suffer. Cursed is the what? The ground. For whose sake? Thy sake. And sorrow shall thou eat of it. All the days of thy life. You got to do some toiling work, nah. When you first came on the scene, all you had to do was dress and keep it. Now you got to be toiling. In the sweat of thy face. Oh, let me go back. 18 thorns. Also in thistles shall it bring forth to thee. And thou shalt eat of the herb of the field. You mean to tell me we didn't have thorns before on the rose? We had thistles and tumbleweeds before. We could have just had the beauty of the rose. Now we got to watch out when we touch it. Now they gotta dethorn it. Man. In the sweat of thy face shall thou eat bread till thou return unto the ground. For out of it was thou taken. For dust thou art. And unto dust thou shalt return. He telling them now you not only did all those other things, now you're going to physically die. We were supposed to be here forever. He telling them now you you're gonna eventually physically die. You're gonna return to the dust. That's why, and and and let me stop right here. That's why we usually take death pretty hard. Because we were never supposed to experience the loss of the people that we love. And y'all in here talking about the Lord lied. Child, he told him right there, you're gonna die physically. Verse 20, and Adam called his wife named Eve, because she was the mother of all living. Look at that. That sounds so sweet. Sounds so sweet. Oh, you're the mother of all. I'm gonna call you Eve. That wasn't sweet. That was division. You know what that name was? This scripture says, and the Lord called them Adam. Them together. He called them Adam. That was speaking to the oneness. That was speaking to the unity. That's why we take the man last name to be one. That's a part of the oneness. Look at the division. I don't even want you to have my name no more. I don't even want you to be called Adam. I'm gonna call you something else. Eve. There you go. That's that enity. Sounds sweet and cute. Nope. Because who? They let themselves be influenced by somebody other than the Lord. Other than the Lord. And guess what? The question was, who are we influencing, right? Their influence was so crazy, it got down in their children. The Lord told them that seed was gonna be messed up too. And guess what we see? The first physical death from one of their sons killing the other son. That was the influence he had on these, they had on their family. Oh no, look, everything that's happening that's crazy, that's bad, that's from that. Way back then. Look at the influence it's still having. And what else is significant about it? The first in people that we influence is our family. It's the people in our house. That's the first ones we influence. We supposed to influence all, but they right there with us. Jesus of Nazareth. And let's see, let's go and see the other side of this thing. Let's go and see the other side. Let's go back to Hebrews. This time we're gonna go

Noah And Saving Your Household

to Hebrews 11. Hebrews 11. I'm turning in my Bible. That's what you hear. Hebrews 11 and 7. Now we have Noah. Noah's back in Genesis 2. Go back and read his story. Go back and read his account. Hebrews 11 and 7 says what? By faith who? Noah. Being what? Warned of God. God is always talking to us. Being warned of God. Of things not seen as yet. He moved with what? Fear. That means he moved with reverence to what God said. Moved with fear. Prepared an art to the saving of his what? Of his house. That's his family. So on one end, we got somebody that didn't listen to the Lord, and it was to the detriment of their family. But here we have Noah who listens to the Lord. He's under the right influence. To the what? The saving of his house. To the saving of his house. It's my belief. The first people that we influence are our family. But to the believer, it doesn't stop there. The Lord told his disciples to do what? Go ye into all the what? So our influence is not just for the home. It's for everybody we come across. Everybody we come across. The question is, are we leading them? Are we influencing them correctly? When they look at us, are we a reflection of Jesus? When they hear about us, are we a reflection of Jesus? Does it seem like we're under the influence of the Holy Spirit? There should be a difference. When people leave us, they should be leaving in a better way, in a better place. They should want to know what is the reason of the hope that is within you. I gotta know. That man asked Jesus, what must I do to be saved? And then that girl with the issue of blood, that woman with the issue of blood, she had been influenced by Jesus. He ain't even know. Well, his influence reaches so far across, this lady risked her life to drag herself. Just to touch the hem of his garment. Because the influence that was going on about Jesus in her time was he was a healer. She was so influenced by that thing, she risked her life to have a life back, to get a life back. And when she left Jesus, it was for the what? For the better. The Bible says not only was she healed, she was made whole to the point where she felt the body correcting itself. To the

Do People Leave Us Better

point where Jesus feels virtue leave his body. And guess what he told her? Daughter, she the one get called daughter. Your faith ain't made you whole. You've been influenced by me so much, you got your life back. You heard about me, didn't you girl? You got your life back. When they hear us, when they leave us, when they encounter us, how are we influencing them? Do they want to know who we're being influenced by? Or are they gonna be saying, oh God, there go them Christians. Getting on everybody's nerve and cussing everybody out. We gotta be careful, folks. We gotta go be, we gotta be careful. We gotta make sure. We gotta make sure we can't be led by our emotions all the time. All this sadness, we can't be led by a diagnosis. I've never seen so many people fiending for a diagnosis. We can't be led by our traumas, and I'm not taking this, I'm not saying take it lightly. There are different levels. People have really experienced some things out here in this world, but we gotta be the the the scripture is clear. Whose report? Whose report you're gonna believe? Yeah, I know you dealt with that. The scripture said he has healed us by his stripes. We were healed, we're already healed. There's no sorrow. Lord have mercy. And things be tough. That's not what I'm saying. The scripture is clear. If you influence by me, the peace. The peace of God. It's gonna keep your hearts and your minds. Peace that passes all understanding. And you say, how? How do we make sure that we are influencing these people the right way?

Exercise Unto Godliness And Close

Let's go back. Let's go back to the scripture we came, we came in on. 1 Timothy 4 and 7 and 12. Exercise thyself how? Unto what? Godliness. Let no man despise being around you. Be thou an example of the believers. In what? In word. In what? Conversation. What else? Charity. In spirit, in faith and purity. Scriptures say they're supposed to know us, that we know him by our love. Lord God. This is how the people were able to in the Bible to say, y'all, y'all act like somebody. Y'all, y'all must be Christians. Huh? That lady even knew that Peter was one of them. Even though he was at the egg and a donkey. She still knew. She said, Yo speech give it away, my God. I saw you. Not only I see you, but your speech gives it away. Are we giving away Jesus? Or like the like the young people like to say, it's giving whatever. Are we giving Jesus? Is it giving Holy Spirit? My mama. Well, I hope that you have enjoyed this episode. I'm telling you, it checked me. It checked me. So I hope you've enjoyed. I hope you've learned something from this episode. I hope you feel compelled to go into the secret places, the secret things. Give it to the Lord. Give it to him. Is he asking you, where are you? In that place in your life? In that compartment in your life, where are you? I mean, why you why are you not listening to me in this area? Why have you not given me that area? Where are you at? Turn your ears on, people. Turn them on. Hear the voice of the Lord. It's only, it only leads you to life. It only leads you to life. And when we don't, when we don't listen to the Lord, things can happen. We never know to what degree. Why would we risk it? Why would we risk it? We'll see you next time, Peace.
