To the Space with Fotografiska: Cecilia Ömalm and Göran Östlin

Fotografiska Tallinn

As autumn approached, Fotografiska Tallinn turned its gaze to the stars with the major exhibition SPACE – A Visual Journey. In this episode, you will meet an inspiring duo:  photographer Cecilia Ömalm and professor of astronomy Göran Östlin.

Since 2019, Ömalm and Östlin have been working on an artistic-scientific project called Ad Lucem/To the Light. With cyanotype as a medium, the duo explores and reinterprets both historic and modern cosmic images. The processing is done with glass negatives directly on top of hand-treated paper and exposed with sunlight. The method becomes a philosophic action, as images that were originally created with light from the sky are reborn through that same light.

SPACE – A Visual Journey, group exhibition, September 13 – January 18

The exhibition SPACE – A Visual Journey explores the celestial frontier where artistic expression and scientific inquiry meet, and captures the grandeur of the cosmos through the eyes of astronomers and the interpretive visions of artists alike. Through works by 14 different artists, we encounter questions about Earth, space, and our identities – who we are in the face of eternity, and who has the right to dream about the future?

The podcast is hosted by Fotografiska guide Elo Aun.

The podcast is recorded in November 2025.
