Please join me in praying the morning offering prayer and prayers for our Holy Father. In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, amen. O Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I offer you my prayers, works, joys, and sufferings of this day, for all the intentions of your sacred heart, in union with the holy sacrifice of the Mass throughout the world, for the salvation of souls, the reparation of sins, the reunion of all Christians, and in particular for the holy intentions of the Holy Father this month, amen. Prayers for the Holy Father Almighty and everlasting God, have mercy upon thy servant, Pope Leo XV, our supreme pontiff, and direct him according to thy loving kindness in the way of eternal salvation, that of thy gift he may ever desire that which is pleasing unto thee, and may accomplish it with all his might, through Christ our Lord, amen. Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, amen. Pages two hundred through two oh two All love's chosen ones are given trials. When I find that a soul is very closely united to Jesus, very intimate with him, I need not ask, have you suffered in your life? Have you had trials, crosses, bitternesses? I am sure that he has passed by the road of Calvary to arrive at this union with the crucified. Therefore, the cross is a means for Jesus to lead back to himself those who do not love him, to bring closer those who do not love him enough, and to consummate in himself those who do love him. Suffering is an expiation of sin. Jesus willed to wash our crimes in his blood, but in order to participate in this sorrowful redemption, we must know also how to be, at least in part, a man of sorrows. It is an inescapable law, we must pass that way. You see, we cannot expiate sin, which is a guilty pleasure, except by suffering. Penance, penance, the holy books are filled with this word. The Blessed Virgin reminded us of it at Lourdes, at La Sallette, and at Fatima. In order to enter into a country as marvelous as heaven, to appear before the God of infinite purity and beauty, to see him face to face, to participate in the divine nature, to take part in the intimate life of the Holy Trinity, since that is our sublime predestination. In order to know God as He knows Himself, to love Him as He loves Himself, we must be purified like gold in the crucible. We must have the wedding garment washed in the blood of the Lamb, but washed also in the blood of our souls, which is our tears. But, and I insist on this but do not ever stop at the isolated idea of expiation by the cross without going further. Whether or not you are given the cross in order to expiate, the cross is always given in love. It is always presented by Jesus in a design of love. It is always an occasion to prove our love, and if you take it that way, it will then acquire the greatest value of expiation. Therefore, with each of your crosses you can say, Lord, I accept it especially as a proof of your love for me. That is the point to which your faith must go to see the love of Jesus in all your crosses. Scripture verse of the day. And what does the Lord require of you but to do justice and to love kindness and to walk humbly with your God? Micah chapter six verse eight. Saint of the day The Saint of the Day for january nineteenth is Saint Canute IV of Denmark. Saint Canute IV of Denmark lived between ten forty two and ten eighty six AD. He was also known as Canute the Holy. He was one of thirteen sons born to the King of Denmark. Canute later succeeded his brother to the throne and reigned as king from ten eighty to ten eighty six. He was a devout Catholic, a zealous propagator of the faith, and a brave warrior, in addition to being a man of prayer, penance, austerity, and charity towards the poor and weak among his people. The happiness of his people and the interests of the church were his motivation, often putting him in opposition to the aristocracy. He fought against the barbarian nations and worked to strengthen the power of the monarchy, but some of his laws were unpopular and caused unrest among the people. Canute sought to expand Denmark's territory and believed he had a claim to the English throne. In 1085 he gathered his fleet and planned an invasion of England to overthrow William the Conqueror, a plan which was never realized. Instead, a revolt broke out against Canute, causing him to take refuge inside Saint Alban's Priory in Odense. Canute, his brother, and seventeen of his men were pursued and killed by rebels in front of the altar. He was named a martyr for the faith, and many miracles were reported at his tomb. He was canonized in the year eleven oh one, the first Danish saint. Saint Canute is the patron saint of Denmark. Saint Canute of Denmark, pray for us. Devotion of the month, the month of January, is traditionally dedicated to the holy name of Jesus. After the Blessed Virgin Mary conceived by the Holy Spirit, the angel Gabriel appeared to Saint Joseph and told him that the child's name should be called Jesus, meaning God saves. According to Jewish law, on the eighth day after his birth, a male child was to be circumcised, receive his name, and become a full member of God's covenant people. According to the old Roman liturgical calendar, the feast of the circumcision of Jesus was celebrated on January 1st, eight days after Christmas, the same day that he was given his sacred name. Currently we celebrate the Solemnity of the Mother of God on January 1st and honor the holy name of Jesus on January 3rd. For Catholics, Jesus' sacred name is the object of a special devotion symbolized by the monogram IHS, sometimes called a Christogram, which is the first three letters of the Greek spelling of his name. Readings for Holy Mass for Monday of the second week in ordinary time. A reading from the first book of Samuel, chapter fifteen, verses sixteen through twenty three. Samuel said to Saul, Stop, let me tell you what the Lord said to me last night. Saul replied, Speak. Samuel then said, Though little in your own esteem, are you not leader of the tribes of Israel? The Lord anointed you king of Israel, and sent you on a mission saying, Go and put the sinful Amalekites under a ban of destruction, fight against them until you have exterminated them. Why then have you disobeyed the Lord? You have pounced on the spoil, thus displeasing the Lord. Saul answered Samuel, I did indeed obey the Lord and fulfill the mission on which the Lord sent me. I have brought back Agag, and I have destroyed Amalek under the ban, but from the spoil the men took sheep and oxen, the best of what had been banned, to sacrifice to the Lord their God in Gilgal. But Samuel said, Does the Lord so delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as in obedience to the command of the Lord? Obedience is better than sacrifice, and submission than the fat of rams. For a sin like divination is rebellion, and presumption is the crime of idolatry. Because you have rejected the command of the Lord, he too has rejected you as ruler. The Word of the Lord Responsorial Psalm Psalm fifty To the upright I will show the saving power of God. Not for your sacrifices do I rebuke you, for your burnt offerings are before me always. I take from your house no bullock, no goats out of your fold. To the upright I will show the saving power of God. Why do you recite my statutes and profess my covenant with your mouth, though you hate discipline and cast my words behind you? To the upright I will show the saving power of God. When you do these things, shall I be deaf to it? Or do you think that I am like yourself? I will correct you by drawing them up before your eyes. He that offers praise as a sacrifice glorifies me, and to him that goes the right way I will show the salvation of God. To the upright I will show the saving power of God. A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mark, chapter two verses eighteen through twenty two. The disciples of John and of the Pharisees were accustomed to fast. People came to Jesus and objected, Why do the disciples of John and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast? Jesus answered them, Can the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast. But the days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast on that day. No one sows a piece of unshrunken cloth on an old cloak. If he does, its fullness pulls away the new from the old, and the tear gets worse. Likewise, no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the skins are ruined. Rather new wine is poured into fresh wineskins. The Gospel of the Lord Prayer of Spiritual Communion In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, amen. My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the most blessed sacrament. I love you above all things, and I desire to receive you into my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace you as if you were already there, and unite myself wholly to you. Never permit me to be separated from you. Amen. Morning Glory Consecration Prayer. Mary, my mother, I give myself totally to you as your possession and property. Please make of me, of all that I am and have, whatever most pleases you. Let me be a fit instrument in your immaculate and merciful hands for bringing the greatest possible glory to God. Amen. Prayer to Saint Joseph. O glorious Saint Joseph, chosen by God to be the guardian of the Holy Family, whose protection is so great, so strong, in union with the Blessed Virgin Mary and our Savior Jesus Christ, send down from heaven a blessing from God to protect us from any harm, strengthen us in body, soul, and spirit. We ask this through thy powerful intercession. Holy Family, pray for us, amen. Guardian Angel Prayer O angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom God's love commits me here, ever this day be at my side, to light and guard, to rule and guide, amen. Prayer to Saint Michael the Archangel. Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle, be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him we humbly pray, and do thou, O prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl throughout the world, seeking the ruin of souls, amen. Inspired by this confidence I fly unto thee, O Virgin of Virgins, my mother, to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O mother of the Word incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen. Act of Faith. O my God, I firmly believe that you are one God in three divine persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. I believe that your divine Son became man, died for our sins, and that He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe these and all the truths which the Holy Catholic Church teaches, because you have revealed them who can neither deceive nor be deceived. In this faith I intend to live and die. Amen. Act of hope. O my God, relying on your almighty power, infinite mercy and promises, I hope to obtain pardon for my sins, the help of your grace, and the life everlasting, through the merits of Jesus Christ, my Lord and Redeemer. Amen. Act of love. O my God, I love you above all things with my whole heart and soul, because you are all good and worthy of all love. I love my neighbor as myself for the love of you. I forgive all who have injured me and ask pardon of all whom I have injured. Amen. Prayer for the poor souls in purgatory. O gentle heart of Jesus, ever present in the Blessed Sacrament, ever consumed with burning love for the poor captive souls in purgatory, have mercy on them. Be not severe in thy judgment, but let some drops of thy precious blood fall upon the devouring flames. Merciful Savior, send thy angels to conduct them to a place of refreshment, light, and peace. Amen. Act of resignation to the divine will. O Lord my God, from this moment do I accept from thy hands with burning love and sincere contrition, with a calm and willing disposition, whatsoever death thou shalt choose to send me with its pains and griefs.
