In this episode, Anna and Derek chat about Buddy being a grunge trendsetter years before it was cool, if Terry's boyfriend actually had a right to be annoyed with her, and much more during their discussion of the very extremely loose Twelfth Night adaptation Just One of the Guys (1985).

Anna Keizer and Derek Dehanke are the co-hosts of ‘80s Movie Montage. The idea for the podcast came when they realized just how much they talk – a lot – when watching films from their favorite cinematic era. Their wedding theme was “a light nod to the ‘80s,” so there’s that, too. Both hail from the Midwest but have called Los Angeles home for several years now. Anna is a writer who received her B.A. in Film/Video from Columbia College Chicago and M.A. in Film Studies from Chapman University. Her dark comedy short She Had It Coming was an Official Selection of 25 film festivals with several awards won for it among them. Derek is an attorney who also likes movies. It is a point of pride that most of their podcast episodes are longer than the movies they cover.

SPEAKER_03

Every day at lunch, we get a very special treat from a very special guy. A guy who has dedicated his life to building his body, pushing his muscles to the very limits of human endurance. Why, you ask? Why? Well, to be strong enough To lift tables and spill food,

SPEAKER_00

Greg Toler! Woo yeah! Hello and welcome to 80s Movie Montage. This is Derek.

SPEAKER_02

And this is Anna.

SPEAKER_00

And that was Clayton Roehner as Rick Morehouse telling everyone what an asshole William Zabka is in 1985's Just One of the Guys.

SPEAKER_02

Well done.

SPEAKER_00

Thank you.

SPEAKER_02

It is Just One of the Guys. Where to

SPEAKER_00

begin? Yeah,

SPEAKER_02

it is...

SPEAKER_00

Look, I'm just going to say right off the bat, we all know that this movie would not have been made in 2025. However, it was in fact made in 1985.

SPEAKER_02

Cracked.

SPEAKER_00

And so. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

God, oh my God, this movie's 40 years old.

SPEAKER_00

We've obviously-

SPEAKER_02

I don't know why all of a sudden that's like, this whole podcast is about 80s movies, but-

SPEAKER_00

We've for sure talked about movies where there are like pieces where like, well, that wouldn't play very well, or that's kind of problematic.

SPEAKER_02

This is kind of like the whole movie. The

SPEAKER_00

whole concept is like, well, they probably wouldn't do this now, but they did then.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. And I mean, like, okay, so like I mentioned at the very tail end of the last episode, this is a very, very, very loose adaptation of Shakespeare.

SPEAKER_00

Once again, twice in a row? Yeah. Amazing.

SPEAKER_02

So this is the adaptation of Twelfth Night.

SPEAKER_00

Okay.

SPEAKER_02

And you brought it up when we were... Oh, okay. So actually, really quickly, just to preface, prior to watching the movie for the podcast, you had never seen this movie before.

SPEAKER_00

This was the first time I'd seen it. And that made it hit a little different because we've obviously covered movies again where we're like, oh yeah, I can't believe that they did that back then. But for most of those, I have memories of seeing the movie when it first came out or like decades ago. So seeing this for the first time was a pretty wild experience.

SPEAKER_02

So you brought up correctly that there has been a more recent adaptation.

SPEAKER_00

I've already forgotten the name of that one. She's the man. That's it.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, with Amanda Bynes. Yes. And I– when you brought that up, I was like, yes, that's absolutely correct. And also, I don't know. I'm speaking out of turn because who the hell knows if Amanda Bynes was even familiar with this movie. But it does seem like actually her performance in She's the Man really mimics the performance in this film.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, no. With like the

SPEAKER_02

comedy.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. I thought– Yeah. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

So while you had never seen it before, I had and actually was telling you about a very, I mean, I don't say traumatic in like the true, but like it was a horribly embarrassing moment as a child. You

SPEAKER_00

saw this with like your dad or

SPEAKER_02

something? Yeah. And there's one moment, one moment.

SPEAKER_00

Did you think that, well, look, look, this would be an incredibly embarrassing movie to watch from start to finish, right? As a kid. Yes. Because the brother alone.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Who the hell? I mean, these two siblings talk about sex

SPEAKER_00

constantly with each other. They do. And I don't know how real that would be. But when she walked in on him...

SPEAKER_02

She was just like, oh, so sweet. Like,

SPEAKER_00

it was such a weird... I mean, it was great that she tried talking to him and he said, that's super interesting. Yeah,

SPEAKER_02

yeah. It was a funny moment, legitimately. Okay, so we'll... Sorry, we're just like bouncing all around. We'll stick to our usual format here. So you mentioned 1985. Yes, I did. And writers. Okay, so we have two writers, the first of which Dennis Feldman, not the first time we have brought him up.

SPEAKER_00

Okay.

SPEAKER_02

But it has been... A good minute since the last time. So he has both story and screenplay credit for this. It's his first writing credit. The first time, and probably the last time, well, this is the last time probably, the first time was for The Golden Child. Amazing. So go check out that episode. Peak

SPEAKER_00

cinema.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. I mean, I don't think I had, I don't even remember at this point, like to your point, So many 80s movies. It's like I've seen bits and pieces at the very least.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Of a good many of them. And I think that was... Anyway.

SPEAKER_00

That's certainly a unique one.

SPEAKER_02

It sure is. So The Golden Child. I don't know this movie. It's called Real Men. But I do remember bringing him up not only for The Golden Child, but because in terms of his other credits, he has like a franchise to his name, which is...

SPEAKER_00

Species.

SPEAKER_02

Species. So he's the writer on Species. I don't know how closely tied he stayed to the franchise, but because he originated the materials, like in Species 2, he has a character credit.

SPEAKER_00

Isn't the whole premise of Species like, what if aliens were sexy and wanted to kill you?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, it's Natasha something. Okay. I think I remember her. He has a credit. There was a TV movie, Species 3, and then another TV movie, Species The Awakening. Okay.

UNKNOWN

Okay.

SPEAKER_02

All right, moving on to the other writer, Jeff Franklin. So this also was his first, well, first feature writing credits. We had a couple like TV credits under his belt already. He's also a producer. So I think that's like more so where his wheelhouse is. But especially in television, there is a lot of crossover between like writer slash director, or I'm sorry, writer slash producer. Oh, okay. So some of his other writing credits include a ton of TV, almost entirely TV. Also, though, not the first time we brought him up. It's not. No. He has credits for Laverne and Shirley. He has credits. So not the Gary Shandling show, but it's Gary Shandling's show. I

SPEAKER_00

don't even know what the difference is.

SPEAKER_02

So the first time we brought him up was for Summer School. Yeah. So I think that was our first time with Steve, Steve Harreld, that we recorded with him. I think so, yeah. So go check that one out. More credits for Full House, High Tide TV show, don't know it. Also the TV show, Hanging with Mr. Cooper. Okay. The last film credit I have for him, Love Stinks. That

SPEAKER_00

movie, not good.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, you've seen it.

SPEAKER_00

I have seen it. Oh, do

SPEAKER_02

you remember who's in it?

SPEAKER_00

French Stewart. Oh, okay. Yeah, and Bridget Wilson. Oh, yeah,

SPEAKER_02

yeah. Isn't she the one that's married to Pete Sampras? Is she? I think so. Bridget Wilson. Are you Bridget Fonda or Bridget Wilson?

SPEAKER_00

Wilson.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I'm pretty sure she's married to Pete Sampras. So I don't know how closely tied he is with– It's not really the reboot. It's just like the thing they're doing with every fucking TV show now, like The Fuller House. He has a credit for that, too. Okay. So just in general, a lot of TV

SPEAKER_00

work. Someone's got to get a credit for that, I suppose. I

SPEAKER_02

suppose so. Yeah. Okay. Moving on to director. This one's kind of fun because, first of all, female director. We don't often get to say that, especially for the 80s.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. I mean, female director for this movie... I feel like there's some actual meaning there in terms of what a big part of the message in this movie is. There

SPEAKER_02

is a message.

SPEAKER_00

There is. It's just a silly 80s movie, but there is. Yeah,

SPEAKER_02

there is a message. So fun for a couple of reasons. That's one of them. So the director is Lisa Gottlieb. And not only do we very rarely get to bring up female directors on this podcast, but also, so she, I never took a class personally with her when I was at Columbia College, Chicago,

SPEAKER_00

but

SPEAKER_02

she was one of the instructors there, one of the professors there.

SPEAKER_00

That's awesome.

SPEAKER_02

So that's kind of fun too. In any case, yeah, go Lisa. So this was her first feature directorial credit. Okay.

UNKNOWN

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Doesn't– unfortunately, didn't have the chance to do, like, a ton more directing. She has seven total directing credits. Among, though, it's a little bit half and half between film and television. So she has a directing credit for the TV series Freddy's Nightmares. Also Dream On, the TV series. Okay. A couple more films, Across the Moon and Cadillac Ranch.

UNKNOWN

Okay.

SPEAKER_02

And then also the TV series Boy Meets World.

SPEAKER_00

Okay. She also was in the casting department for a movie that we covered, The Blues Brothers.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, very cool. I mean, that kind of makes sense because, I mean, I don't know where in the world she is at the moment, but the school I went to was in Chicago. She might be based out of Chicago. Blues Brothers was filmed in Chicago. So that all kind of ties together.

SPEAKER_00

It all ties

SPEAKER_02

together. All ties together. But I like what you said about... The fact that like there's meaning behind the fact that like a woman directed this and like kind of what the message of the film is. And

SPEAKER_00

she did it as a woman director not having to pretend to be a man director.

SPEAKER_02

Yes, correct. Sorry, it took me a second. Yes, absolutely right.

SPEAKER_00

Because it is like buried really deep within all the silliness is like– a message of equality and gender equality in particular, and why any one individual is just as talented and capable of doing a particular job as somebody else.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Particularly journalism.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, no, I think that's, I think you're spot on. And yes, it is, it is a Wacky movie, especially anytime that brother's on screen. This

SPEAKER_00

movie.

SPEAKER_02

It devolves

SPEAKER_00

into. Is so goddamn horny at all times. It makes Grease 2 feel like it's just completely produced by Puritans. I mean, it's crazy.

SPEAKER_02

It is. I mean.

SPEAKER_00

And the kid is 15. I know. I

SPEAKER_02

mean, I will say, though, that like he totally runs with that being his defining characteristic. Yeah. In the film. Yeah, no, like... It's kind of funny just how much he leans into, like, this is who this character is. At

SPEAKER_00

every single scene. Every single scene. Yeah. Every moment.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And, like, 80% of those, he's wearing the same outfit.

SPEAKER_02

Yes, I know. The... I don't know. I mean, he was, like... Ripped sleeves, plaid. He was grunge before grunge. Like, the entire movie, he's just wearing ripped-up plaid flannel shirts.

SPEAKER_00

It's like if you combine... The horniest 15-year-old ever with Sons Out, Guns Out, and Grunge. Yeah. You get this character.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah. But I do like that, like, look, I get it. First of all, I really love Terry. I actually really like her character. Yeah. And I can really appreciate that she's comfortable with who she is. She understands that she has a certain currency as far as her looks go. She does not use that. Very much the

SPEAKER_00

opposite.

SPEAKER_02

And she's going through her papers. And then she hears him with another teacher. It's the other teacher. I want to clarify that. The

SPEAKER_00

other teacher was talking about, like, hooking up with his students and how it'd be worth losing his job over. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Super gross. Yeah. But that is to set up, like, how, yeah, she's just completely objectified by pretty much everybody around her. But she is talented. And she... thinks you're just not taking me seriously enough. Like, and if I were a dude, you'd be treating me differently.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. So... That's it. That is the ultimate underlying premise of this is that you would take me seriously if I was a dude and I would have gotten, I guess I would have, she would have won this writing competition that would have gotten her like a summer internship.

SPEAKER_02

At the local newspaper.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. And fortunately... This same contest takes place at all of the local high schools. All at the same time.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Maybe staggered a week so that she could just like come

SPEAKER_02

up with this. It's true. It's true. And also so late at the end of the school year. Yeah. Like I think I clocked it in one of the earlier scenes when the teacher was talking to all the students about the deadlines and everything. Yeah. And like I saw behind him like a little piece of paper on the wall and it was talking about what I believe is the same competition. And it said like the deadline was May 25th.

SPEAKER_00

Mm-hmm. That's the end of the year,

SPEAKER_02

basically. Yeah, and also it's, like, prompt. So it's, like, it's just funny. There's a lot going on, yeah. A lot. Like, this all takes place in, like, not even two weeks because they also preface the fact that Terry's parents are out of town for just two weeks. And they never come back by the end of the movie that we see.

SPEAKER_00

Thank God for that. What I was really not wanting is their... like some big blowout party and they have to like clean everything out before the parent, like let's just save that for the other movies. Probably the

SPEAKER_02

epilogue and we'll get to that. The epilogue is probably a couple weeks down the line because now she's at her job. Sorry, spoiler. She does eventually get the job. But yeah.

SPEAKER_00

She's a very talented writer.

SPEAKER_02

We have way more to talk about this movie than I thought we would. So let's get back to the players behind the scenes. Cinematography. John McPherson and... This is the first time that we've brought him up, but probably not the last time. There's a couple options there for us. So earlier in his career, unfortunately, he's no longer with us. Yeah, it's just very common if somebody's already a little bit more established in their career. By the time we're covering them in the podcast, often they're no longer with us. But McPherson kind of cut his teeth on Kojak recently. The Incredible Hulk?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, so I am very familiar with his work, because this is like the old school TV series version of Hulk, right?

SPEAKER_02

It honestly goes head to head with Hill Street Blues, or no, Taxi, as like the saddest intro music ever. It

SPEAKER_00

makes a little bit more sense for The Incredible Hulk than Taxi. I get it, but

SPEAKER_02

holy fuck, it's depressing. He shot that, St. Elsewhere, another TV show, Amazing Stories, and now we're getting into films.

SPEAKER_00

Well, I can't pass up the amazing miniseries V. Oh,

SPEAKER_02

I'm sorry. Did you

SPEAKER_00

watch that with the alien invasion?

SPEAKER_02

It's the earlier version of what came out probably several years ago at this point, but there was like a reboot of it, right?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it was very dramatic. It was like aliens having babies with humans. It was just like, is this a soap opera? I think it

SPEAKER_02

was. So he shot Jaws the Revenge.

SPEAKER_00

Oh,

SPEAKER_01

wow.

SPEAKER_02

Which would be a very fun movie to cover at some point. Oh my god, we can, yeah. Just

SPEAKER_00

get out of the fucking water.

SPEAKER_02

Batteries not

SPEAKER_00

included. Oh yeah, that is like a forgotten movie, I think.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I think of anything that is an option for us, that would be the first one I would want to cover with him again. I don't know if I'm going to want to ever cover Short Circuit 2 because I'm not sure if I want to cover Short Circuit 1.

SPEAKER_00

Nothing is wilder than than what we're talking about right now. Movie wise, even with the stuff that. Oh, no, I know. Face. Yeah. No, I remember.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Okay. That still pales in comparison to some of the stuff going on in this movie. Wow, what

SPEAKER_02

a turn of phrase, pales in comparison, what we're talking about. Thank you. Thank you very much. He also shot Fletch Liz, which maybe, because we've done Fletch, also with Steve.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah. So go check

SPEAKER_02

that out. And then his final credit was a film called Bingo.

SPEAKER_00

Which was not about the game. It appears to have been about a dog. Yes. Figured, okay. And Bingo was his name-o.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Okay, music. Tom Scott. Oh, you know what?

SPEAKER_00

What?

SPEAKER_02

For sure. Man, we can't get away from this topic at the moment. For sure, there's going to be one film at the very least that I'm going to definitely want to cover at some point that he also was part of. However, let's see. I have mostly filmed some TV for the composer of this film. So earlier in his career, a couple interesting names. Conquest of the Planet of the Apes.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, are you familiar with that one? I don't know that one specifically.

SPEAKER_00

I am familiar with all like the series of those, but they all kind of get like jumbled up in my mind. I know that there's like telepaths and an underground nuke and all kinds of crazy stuff.

SPEAKER_02

Okay. He did the music for The Nine Lives of Fritz the Cat.

SPEAKER_00

Amazing.

SPEAKER_02

That is a film. He did the music for the TV series Beretta. Is that about a car? Or is it just had an interesting car in it?

SPEAKER_00

I'm not sure. I don't think it's just about a car, though.

SPEAKER_02

Knight Rider is kind of just about a car. But

SPEAKER_00

that car was like if Skynet was built into a car and called Kit.

SPEAKER_02

So he did the music for Stir Crazy. That's possibly one we would do in the future. I definitely, this is a sure thing.

SPEAKER_00

Oh. The sure thing. The movie is called The Sure Thing. Yeah. I definitely want

SPEAKER_02

to do that one. What

SPEAKER_00

year was that?

SPEAKER_02

I mean, 80s. Fair

SPEAKER_00

enough.

SPEAKER_02

It might also be 85, to be honest.

SPEAKER_00

I'm so annoyed that arachnophobia is 1990. I'm sorry. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Which is weird that- He did some music for that. Because it was a spider thing, so- Interesting that he did the music for a TV series called Sarah. Oh, I think that was Geena Davis. I don't know much more than that. I think she was Sarah. This is what I was talking about. So he did the music for Soul Man, which is a level lower than even Short Circuit.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I don't think I can do that one.

SPEAKER_02

That I'm going to say is off the table.

SPEAKER_00

There is at least like if you dig deep enough, like I said, you can find a bit of a lesson, a bit of gender inequality.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah,

SPEAKER_00

but Soul Man, I don't. I don't know. Maybe I'd have to do some research. Okay, I just finished my research. No.

SPEAKER_02

He also did music for Hot Pursuit. Family Ties, TV show.

SPEAKER_00

A very special episode. Maybe. I don't know. Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Shakes the Clown, which I don't know why that's come up like two episodes in a row. And then a TV series called Phenom. Okay. Moving on to editing. Tony Lombardo. They

SPEAKER_00

named a trophy for the Super Bowl after him, I think. Yeah, you

SPEAKER_02

know what? When his name came up, I was like, why is that name familiar? I'm like, I think it's just because of the Super Bowl trophy.

SPEAKER_00

That is Lombardi. Oh,

SPEAKER_02

okay. My apologies. Isn't it? I think so. I don't know

SPEAKER_00

for sure. The Lombardi Award. I think so.

SPEAKER_02

I'm going to defer to you because it's the fucking guy, the Green Bay Packers, right?

SPEAKER_00

Hey, call to action. There's going to be a game tomorrow called the Super Bowl. I'm saying the words. And I think the award, I think the trophy goes to the team that wins it, and it's called the Lombardi Award.

SPEAKER_02

Okay.

SPEAKER_00

Trophy. Lombardi Trophy? Whatever.

SPEAKER_02

Whatever. Tony Lombardo. Yes.

SPEAKER_00

Yes.

SPEAKER_02

so all films for him and some of them who knows he might be we might talk about him again on the podcast in the future so he cut a perfect couple but this is the one that i'm talking about uncle buck the hard way a film that you really love my cousin vinnie

SPEAKER_00

that movie is brilliant

SPEAKER_02

so he cut that

SPEAKER_00

yeah

SPEAKER_02

the distinguished gentleman sergeant

SPEAKER_00

bilko oh yeah with steve martin

SPEAKER_02

Oh, okay. Yeah. Fat Albert.

SPEAKER_00

Okay.

SPEAKER_02

And I Hate Valentine's Day, which is so funny. That's very timely. So those are all his credits. Okay. Moving on to the stars of the film, starting with Joyce Heiser. And she plays Terry Griffith. How convenient that she did not need to change her name in any way, shape, or form because Terry is a name equally suited to male, female, non-binary.

SPEAKER_00

That was very convenient. It was less convenient for her college-age boyfriend, whose name was Kevin, and then she had to— Yeah, Covina.

UNKNOWN

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Like I said earlier in the conversation, I really like Joyce Hauser. Heiser? Heiser. I should stick to what I said the first time. I really liked her in this film. I do think she's a very charismatic actor. I think she... I mean, look, there's no taking away from the fact that this film is corny as hell. It is. And, you know... Like I said, though, when we were talking about She's the Man, there are really kind of over-the-top comedic elements that Amanda Bynes brings to that performance that Joyce Heiser brought first. Yeah. In terms of, like, kind of the over-top, like, what they think being a guy means.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

And in some ways, now some people would be like, how dare you? But, like, it, to me, is almost rep... Say the word for me. Reminiscent.

SPEAKER_00

Okay.

SPEAKER_02

Of like...

SPEAKER_00

God, I could help out there.

SPEAKER_02

Of like Lucille Ball and like just the wackiness and kind of just the silliness of the humor.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it's meant to be funny. Yeah. They're making some jokes.

SPEAKER_02

But I think she does a really good job. And I think she also does a really good job with the more serious stuff where she's like kind of lamenting, like, why won't people take me seriously? And, you know, also, I really love the way that she, you know, portrays like her passion for this career and, you know, wanting to be taken seriously as a journalist. And I, yeah, I like her a lot. I think she's...

SPEAKER_00

And her portrayal of a guy, I think it also helps to keep in mind that she was trying to fit in with a bunch of like high school age guys. So like all the exaggerated dude bro mannerisms and stuff. Yeah, totally makes sense.

SPEAKER_02

I mean, the funniest part is when she's in the bathroom.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, the first time?

SPEAKER_02

No,

SPEAKER_00

she's in

SPEAKER_02

the bathroom with Rick. Oh,

SPEAKER_00

yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

And she's like, this is what you call typical male bonding. Like, why would you ever say that? Well, the first

SPEAKER_00

the first day that she went to the other high school and she is just like looking at all the urinals and kind of freaks out as a guy walks in. And as the guy walks in, she just looks over and she's all just finished. And he's like, like, I care.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

UNKNOWN

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

I did enjoy that. Yeah. And then she like, she like ran out and then decided like, oh yeah, I still have to go to the

SPEAKER_02

bathroom. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Right back in.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. I thought she did a really good job. I liked the casting quite a bit. And... It's not the first time

SPEAKER_00

that we've seen her. No,

SPEAKER_02

but I think this is the first time we've brought her up. Yes. Um... Yeah, there's one film on her filmography that we've already talked about, but she, I don't know how significant of a part she had, because I'm almost certain we didn't bring her up. I have, earlier in her career, mostly film. So she was in The Hollywood Nights. That is, I think, 1980, and that, I think, was like Michelle Pfeiffer's first big film role. So I don't know, maybe at some point we would bring it up. We definitely, at some point, are going to do Valley Girl. I do love that film, and it's kind of crazy we haven't yet. She's in that, but off the top of my head, I don't remember who she is in that, so I don't know if she has a huge role. She's in Staying Alive, another possibility to do in the future.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, possibly. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

You know, to your point, this is Spinal Tap. She was on the TV series L.A. Law. Okay. Her last credit so far is a film called The Wedding Pact.

UNKNOWN

Okay.

SPEAKER_02

And she's just done multiple TV appearances as well, like one-offs here and there. But I wish– I don't know why this wasn't more– you know, I don't think the film performed particularly well. But I think that she really is a standout, and it's too bad that– or maybe it was her choice. I don't know, to not throw herself more into, like– Who

SPEAKER_00

can say?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, same. Okay. Moving on to, you mentioned him at the top of the episode, Clayton Roaner. So he is Rick Morehouse. This is his first feature credit. Not the first time we have brought him up, believe it or not. Really? Yeah. Okay. So... There's actually, it's so wild. There are two main characters from this film.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, I thought he looked familiar. Okay.

SPEAKER_02

That are in another film that we've covered. And it's just so weird that they were in it together. April Fool's Day. That's it.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

So that is the first time that we brought him up.

SPEAKER_00

He's Chaz.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. And we covered that one just last year. So please go check that one out. Okay. Yeah, that was such an interesting film. I still don't know how I feel about it, but he is in that. This is a film we really like, but it's the 90s, so we can't cover it, The Relic.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, yeah. That is a good movie.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. He's Tom Sizemore's right-hand guy. Oh,

SPEAKER_00

not doctor. Detective Hollingsworth.

SPEAKER_02

Correct.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Yep. I mean, he is working to this day. So he's very busy. Couple TV series, Murder One, Good vs. Evil. He was in the film Jobs, as in like Steve Jobs.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, okay.

SPEAKER_02

This is a little– I remember beating this up when we talked about April Fool's Day. I'm never going to watch this movie, but he was in– I don't know why they– Specify final sequence, but he is in the final sequence of The Human Centipede 3.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I'm not going to watch any of them.

SPEAKER_02

Nope, I'm not going to go down that rabbit hole.

SPEAKER_00

I'm just not.

SPEAKER_02

Just not.

SPEAKER_00

I'm not doing it.

SPEAKER_02

I was a teenage were-skunk, which I know we've brought that up. Well, probably for him, but I think we've brought it up other times too, and I love that title. Yeah, that's amazing. And just a lot of TV appearances. Like I said, he's been very busy. He's in a lot of stuff. Okay, moving on to Terry's... I don't even know what word to call him. Infamous? Brother? Buddy? He does kind of steal the movie in a lot of ways, to be honest.

SPEAKER_00

He really does. I mean... It's just, it's so like the times in the movie when he's like ostensibly talking to their parents.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Like, one of them is just like, oh, yeah, same to you. Eat me. Yeah. And then he hangs up the phone angrily. Mom says hi.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. He's actually really good in this movie. Like I said, say whatever you want about the character, whether you love or hate the character, but goddamn, does he commit to the character? Yeah, I

SPEAKER_00

know. There are no half measures here.

SPEAKER_02

No. So, played by Billy Jane. Billy Zane is in this? No. Billy Jane. Son of a... So I have a lot of TV for him, some film, and a lot of stuff from when he was like a younger actor, very busy as a kid actor. So he was in the TV series The Bad News Bears.

SPEAKER_00

The one with Matthau? Walter Matthau?

UNKNOWN

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Was he part of the film or also the TV series?

SPEAKER_00

Oh, good point. I don't think he was.

SPEAKER_02

Okay. So he was on the TV show of that. I kind of want to watch this movie, Bloody Birthday. Kind of curious about it. The Beastmaster, haven't you brought that up before?

SPEAKER_00

That movie looks so bad now. I watched the first... Five or ten minutes, and I'm like, I don't think I can do it. It is so corny, and the production has not aged well. Maybe I'll try again. But yeah, I do remember him from that. Oh,

SPEAKER_02

you do? Okay. He's in Cujo, and I'm sorry, we're never going to cover Cujo. I

SPEAKER_00

just don't think I can. No, I've seen it, and I've read it, and I'm never going to do either again. I just

SPEAKER_02

can't.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

I just can't.

SPEAKER_00

It's brutal, and the book is way worse. Yeah. Yeah. Why did I do that? I don't know. I don't

SPEAKER_02

know. Why'd you do that to yourself? All TV appearances for the rest of his credits. It's not easy. Laser tag Academy. Okay. I think a lot of people of a certain generation probably remember him from Silver Spoons.

SPEAKER_00

Yes. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Because I think he's just one of Ricky's friends. Parker Lewis can't lose. I

SPEAKER_00

remember him from that. Okay. That was like such a... Let's make... Let's try to make a Ferris Bueller, but just different.

SPEAKER_02

Well, so not too long ago– it's so interesting that you say that. I got to dig up this article. I saw something online where– I mean, they did do a TV version of Ferris Bueller, and it didn't perform well. It didn't do well. And so the article was about the comparison between– Like basically Ferris Bueller's Day Off, the TV show, versus Parker Lewis Can't Lose because of what you just said in terms of the latter being far more successful, but essentially the same story. It

SPEAKER_00

very much was.

SPEAKER_02

I personally think that the reason why the TV show Ferris Bueller did not do well is because it was going to be an insurmountable success. Undertaking, I don't care how you cut it, to try to replace Matthew Broderick in that role.

SPEAKER_00

No, that's it. There's no way

SPEAKER_02

anybody could have ever... I don't care how good you are. There's no way. He is so iconic as Ferris.

SPEAKER_00

Maybe if they had gotten him...

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, but I mean, at the time, that was like still the time where it's like, oh, I don't– if I'm a film star, I am not doing television. So that's why Parker Lewis could be successful because it's like, well, it's not Ferris. It's Parker Lewis. But anyway. And then just a lot of TV work for Billy Jane.

UNKNOWN

Okay.

SPEAKER_02

Moving on to Tony Hudson, Denise. So Denise is Terry's like friend who– Is always kind of moaning and groaning that she can't get dates, that she's a loser, she can't find any cool guys. There's definitely, like, well, only from her side of it. I don't think Terry at all perpetuates any kind of imbalance in the friendship. But Denise is constantly like, you're so pretty, you have everything, you have this great boyfriend. Like, it's really...

SPEAKER_00

It is a little bit much sometimes.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Yeah. So in any case, that's who that is. She also has been working. I have all films for her. Not a ton of credits, but Young Doctors in Love.

UNKNOWN

Okay.

SPEAKER_02

Which technically we could cover.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

As well as Places in the Heart. So we could do that. This one's fun. I don't. Have I seen it? Leatherface colon Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3. I

SPEAKER_00

don't know. I always get a little wary of the horror titles with colons.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I don't remember I've seen that one.

SPEAKER_00

Have they tried doing too much? That's what I wonder.

SPEAKER_02

And Assassin's Fury.

SPEAKER_00

Well, just because we mentioned this series, I'll bring up a couple TV series that she was in a single episode for. Oh, sure. Go for it. Including Knight Rider. She was in one episode of Knight Rider. Okay. And one episode of The Greatest American Hero.

SPEAKER_02

Oh,

SPEAKER_00

okay. Which if you try to watch that show from the start, he is not a good teacher, I don't think.

SPEAKER_02

No.

SPEAKER_00

No.

SPEAKER_02

No.

SPEAKER_00

So like him like losing instruction, like, yeah, no, I can see it all now. After having tried to rewatch it, I'm like, you're just kind of a bit of a fuck up, sir.

SPEAKER_02

What was the thing? He didn't want to be a teacher. Didn't he fail at something else? And so his fallback was teaching?

SPEAKER_00

He didn't want to teach this particular class, I think. Oh, okay. And there was a lot of conversation about teaching this.

SPEAKER_02

You're right.

SPEAKER_00

Me doing air quotes, special class. Yes,

SPEAKER_02

you're right. Okay. Okay. Moving on to, oh my goodness, William Zabka.

SPEAKER_00

It's literally the same character. If you imagine the character from Karate Kid, if he couldn't do karate.

SPEAKER_02

And also with like zero emotional levity.

SPEAKER_00

No, he's just,

SPEAKER_02

yeah. Even in the Karate Kid, which it's fucking hilarious because in the movie, somebody says that Terry looks like the Karate Kid. So it's like very self-referential, not self-referential, but kind of meta in a weird way. Yeah. So- At least in The Karate Kid, Johnny, there was still some depth to Johnny, especially at the end. A little bit. A little bit. As much as an 80s villain could have. Yes. Where, you know, he's being told, like, sweep the leg, and it's clear, like, he even thinks that's going too far. Yeah. And so at least he's given something, something at the end of the movie. He doesn't get any of that in this one. He gets nothing. And this was after The Karate Kid. However, not sure if it was filmed before. I don't know. Sometimes when films are released are not in line with like when they were released.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, that is interesting because why would they have made the reference to the Karate Kid?

SPEAKER_02

Oh, yeah, absolutely. You're right. So I'm wrong.

SPEAKER_00

But

SPEAKER_02

yeah, you're wrong. I'm right. You know, you're right. I'm wrong.

SPEAKER_00

It would have been amazing if they had just made that comment based on nothing but like a poster for the Karate Kid coming soon. Let's

SPEAKER_02

make a comment about this. You're right. I don't know. I just blanked on that. You know what's so interesting? So he plays Greg Tolan. Mm hmm. the bully and the villain, I guess, in the film. And did you know that William Zabka has an Oscar nomination? I did not know that. Not for acting. However, he, I guess, was behind the team, the producing team. He was up for Best Short Film Live Action for a short called Most.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, interesting.

SPEAKER_02

Isn't that so neat?

SPEAKER_00

That is cool.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. So... He arguably is the most well-known of anybody in this movie. There's one other person who she's done quite well for herself. But Zabka, especially because of Cobra Kai. Yeah. Of late being so popular. Actually, you know what? I think part three of the final season is dropping this month.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, I've never needed a show just to end more than this.

SPEAKER_02

Well, you know what? I'm going to say this is a compliment to him. I wanted the show to stay along the pathway of how it started, where it was like mostly about him. Yeah. It was supposed to be from his perspective, essentially. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

No, it started off great. And the more they veered away from that and just into like international drama and competition and weirdly like asserting power over the globe.

UNKNOWN

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Like, what? I think he is so fun to watch. I think it was an amazing idea to say let's do a TV show about what happened to Johnny Lawrence. I love that all the characters, almost all, from the previous films were like, sure, I'll come back.

SPEAKER_00

Even getting Elizabeth Shue to come back.

SPEAKER_02

Yes.

SPEAKER_00

For an episode or so. Whether it's a cameo,

SPEAKER_02

recurring role, what have you, guest star. Yeah. I love that everybody was, like, pretty much game to do it. I just am– honestly, like, I don't care about the kids. I don't care about the kids. I just care about, like–

SPEAKER_00

Well, they're making another movie. Are they? Yeah. Jesus. Okay. With Ralph Macchio. Sure. Yeah. Yeah. So they're doing, like, a whole other, like, Karate Kid movie.

UNKNOWN

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

I mean. And

SPEAKER_00

I'm sure that he'll be in it, right? I

SPEAKER_02

hope so. Yeah. Moving on. Well, we haven't even gone over all of his credits yet. Starting on. So, yes, he is in Karate Kid. He's yes and no in part two. I think the reason why he gets that credit is because that opening scene where Kreese, doesn't he like punch him, hit him?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, there's like a fight in the parking lot, and that's when Miyagi does the live or die thing and then honks his nose.

SPEAKER_02

I'm not nearly as familiar with the second and third film as I am with the first.

SPEAKER_00

Well, they're very important for purposes of the show, so maybe we should watch them. Well,

SPEAKER_02

it's kind of filtered through.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, they try to get you up to date. They do a good job.

SPEAKER_02

So I mentioned this when we were watching the movie, that this is part of his trilogy of 80s bullies. And he's also, although I don't know if he's considered, I don't think he's considered the bully in this one. He's also National Lampoon's European Vacation. He's the boyfriend, Audrey's boyfriend. I think, is he, you know this movie better than I do. Is he the bully in Back to School? A

SPEAKER_00

hundred percent.

SPEAKER_02

Okay. Then that's the third

SPEAKER_00

one. He's like the same character. Like what if he also didn't know karate, but somehow got into college?

SPEAKER_02

Okay. Gotcha. So he's in that. Hot Tub Time Machine.

SPEAKER_00

He

SPEAKER_02

plays himself in How I Met Your Mother, which- Oh. You watched that

SPEAKER_00

show. Yeah, I don't remember that episode. There's a lot of episodes.

SPEAKER_02

Okay. He is in a TV miniseries called Two Appomattox. And then here we go. So not only is there the TV show of Cobra Kai, but I guess there's also a couple of video games that he has lent his voice to. Okay. So Cobra Kai colon The Karate Kid Saga Continues and Cobra Kai 2 colon Dojo's Rising.

SPEAKER_00

And if you can believe it, I'm not making this up, he was in one episode of The Greatest American Hero.

SPEAKER_02

Really?

SPEAKER_00

Yes.

SPEAKER_02

Okay. Moving on to the college boyfriend, Kevin slash Kavina.

SPEAKER_00

Kavina.

SPEAKER_02

So played by Lee McCloskey.

SPEAKER_00

I'll say this much for him. There are far worse boyfriends where he's clearly, you know, right off the bat, like, oh, she's definitely not going to be together with this guy by the end. But they're certainly like worse guys that I've seen in these movies. Yeah, I would totally agree with

SPEAKER_02

you. I'm like, look, he kind of has a point with a lot of shit. She's just kind of all of a sudden an MIA. I mean, look, he's as dismissive of her as anybody where he's like, can't this writing thing just be a hobby?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, but for him it's weird because it's not as much like, I don't want you to write. I think you should be a model just because I think you'll make more money. As a model. That's his whole thing, I think.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. I mean, he's– but it is the same in that, like, he is prioritizing her looks. Like– Yeah. Like, that is where he thinks her value is.

SPEAKER_00

Exactly. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

So– but you're absolutely right. He's not the worst boyfriend in the world in terms of 80s movies. And as far as his credits go, especially later in his career, it's like, oh, yeah, this makes total sense. So earlier in his career, he was on the TV show Executive Suite. He was in a film called Inferno, a couple more films, Fraternity Vacation. Okay. As well as Hamburger, colon, The Motion Picture.

SPEAKER_00

That sounds like it should be familiar for some reason.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, right?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Here we go. So then he finds his niche in soap operas.

SPEAKER_00

Boy, does he.

SPEAKER_02

Whether primetime or daytime.

SPEAKER_00

Look, he's got a great face for soap operas.

SPEAKER_02

The voice, the looks.

SPEAKER_00

Chiseled. It all

SPEAKER_02

just like, yes. You were born to be on soap operas.

SPEAKER_00

You were born for daytime entertainment.

SPEAKER_02

Well, at first it started with primetime because he was on Dallas. Oh, okay. And that's considered like a primetime soap

SPEAKER_00

opera. Yeah, no, you're right. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

But then you're absolutely right. So he has been on Santa Barbara, General Hospital. One life to live. Just one. The Young and the Restless, like he's kind of knocked out. The only two that I can think of that he hasn't been on, All My Children and, no, maybe that's it. Yeah, All My Children is the only one that I know of.

SPEAKER_00

These are still all going on, aren't they? I

SPEAKER_02

don't think The Young and the Restless is.

SPEAKER_00

They're getting some rest. Finally.

SPEAKER_02

Santa Barbara, I don't think, is a thing anymore. I think General Hospital and All My Children might be the only two left.

SPEAKER_00

Is the difference between a soap opera and just a drama the time at which it is on TV? Because, like, Dallas, you wouldn't really call a soap opera as much as you'd say it's a drama.

SPEAKER_02

That is such... I think at the time... Well, at the time, I think it was called a primetime soap opera.

SPEAKER_00

Really? Okay.

SPEAKER_02

I think. But your question's really interesting because, like, to me, if I'm really– I never thought about it before. But I think, to me, a soap opera– well, okay, look, you're right.

SPEAKER_00

Production value is different.

SPEAKER_02

One major difference between Dallas, not only because it's primetime, is once a week. Soap opera is five days

SPEAKER_00

a week. Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

So that is probably the defining feature.

SPEAKER_00

And that's why the production looks–

SPEAKER_02

The way

SPEAKER_00

it does. It looks different,

SPEAKER_02

yeah. So I think that is the defining feature. All right. The other person that I was saying probably, you know, maybe second to William Zabka is Sherilyn Fenn. Sandy. So she's the one that like really likes

SPEAKER_00

the male Terry. She's the one. Yeah. She's the one that. Jesus Christ. She she's like, we'll go on a double date because I know someone that would be a great match for Rick.

SPEAKER_02

Right. Was it her sister? Who was it?

SPEAKER_00

This fucking lady was. Took them out to some mountains or something or hill caves. Literally, caves to go drinking. And she brought her sixth grader friend or sister.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, my God. It was terrible.

SPEAKER_00

What the hell? As far

SPEAKER_02

as

SPEAKER_00

problematic stuff goes. I'm so glad that they made a joke about it afterwards.

SPEAKER_02

It made it real clear that Rick was not interested. Yeah, it

SPEAKER_00

was bad.

SPEAKER_02

But then she's like, what did she say to Terry? She's like, oh, in five years, she's going to really be interesting to him or something. Yes. In five

SPEAKER_00

years, she's going to make a great wife, I think she said.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Jesus

SPEAKER_02

Christ. Five years? Like, she's still only like 18. Yeah, her character... I know her character in a lot of ways is supposed to be comic relief and intentional to make Terry uncomfortable.

SPEAKER_00

Well, yeah, she's the one that made the Karate Kid comment.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

She's like, look at that fox. Dresses like Elvis Costello and looks like Karate Kid.

SPEAKER_02

But this cuts both ways because if this was– if Terry was like presenting as female Terry. Yeah. And there was a guy treating her the way that Sandy is treating male Terry, that's harassment. And so it's supposed to be funny because it's like a chick who doesn't realize that– Terry's also a chick. She

SPEAKER_00

pulled Terry's sock right out of her pants.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, like, that's my point. That was an aggressive move. Very aggressive. And so, like, I get it. It's funny. I'm not going to, like, go down a whole fucking rabbit hole about it. But really, it's not great. that she's like so persistent when he is being very clear to her, I'm not interested.

SPEAKER_00

She's giving me a lot of Leah Thompson vibes from Back to the Future. Yeah, I could see that a little

SPEAKER_02

bit.

SPEAKER_00

So I'm like, well, at least it's not her kid.

SPEAKER_02

She's very cute though. Like, and when at the prom, like she should have had a date.

SPEAKER_00

Well, she does end up having a date. It's Terry's brother. Oh,

SPEAKER_02

you're right.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That's who ends up in bed with Terry's brother. Is it the same

SPEAKER_02

night?

UNKNOWN

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

It is the same night. Yeah. It is the same night. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. So in any case, Sherilyn, is it Fen? Fin?

SPEAKER_00

It's probably just one or the other. Fen?

SPEAKER_02

Sherilyn Fen? We've never brought her up. Fen, Fen, Fen? On the show. But she's so busy. I mean, I hope she gets a vacation in every once in a while because especially later in her career, holy shit. So... Earlier on, a lot of films, a couple that we could probably do, Thrashen.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, yeah, with, geez, who's in that?

SPEAKER_02

I don't

SPEAKER_00

know. No, I'm thinking of Gleaming the Cube. Oh,

SPEAKER_02

okay, fair. She's in, and now I say this different every time, The Wraith. Yeah, no, that's The Wraith. Oh, okay. That's it. Okay, great. I'm sure we'll do that. Zombie High, which sounds super fun. Wild at Heart. Oh, yeah. And then she must have had, like, like a good professional relationship with Lynch because she also was on Twin Peaks.

SPEAKER_00

I remember her from that. Yeah, I remember from like and I think they did have like a reboot or sequel or it came back. But I remember from the original series.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I don't think she came back. Wait, is she the chick that dies? She's the chick that dies, right?

SPEAKER_00

She might be.

SPEAKER_02

She's Laura Palmer, isn't she?

SPEAKER_00

No,

SPEAKER_02

no.

SPEAKER_00

She's Audrey Horn. Oh,

SPEAKER_02

well. Sorry. I thought I had stumbled upon something. We solved it. I never watched it. We just solved Twin Peaks. I don't know how people are going to feel about me. I've never watched Twin Peaks. But also she's in the infamous movie Boxing Helena. I remember that was a huge deal when it came out because she's basically amputated. Oh. She's kept as a prize.

SPEAKER_00

I'm not familiar with this movie. Oh, really? Yeah. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

It's like one of those like kind of erotic 90s type movies that were so popular at

SPEAKER_00

the time. With like amputees being held. No, no, I'm out. Yeah, I know. I've seen Bone Tomahawk. What is it? Bone Tomahawk. Yeah. After that, I don't need to see anything involving like amputeed people being kept for... No, I'm out.

SPEAKER_02

Fair.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Three of Hearts. And then listen to all these TV... TV show she's been part of, Rude Awakening, Gilmore Girls, Ray Donovan, Shameless, Confess, Goliath, SWAT, and most recently, Shining Veil, which I was just telling you the other night I want to watch.

SPEAKER_00

So she probably is the individual from this movie with a pretty wildly successful career.

SPEAKER_02

Wildly successful.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. And also- I only am saying this because I had just like a trivia in our socials a while back. She used to date Johnny Depp. Oh. And so in the movie, what is it? Platoon? Mm-hmm. So they kind of did the same thing that they did in Aliens where you were allowed to kind of mark up your gear. And so he has her name on his helmet.

SPEAKER_00

That's cool. Fun fact. Yeah, it is. That is a fun fact.

SPEAKER_02

Okay, so last person we're covering, Deborah Goodrich, who plays Deborah. Why not? And actually, I really like her. It kind of doesn't...

SPEAKER_00

She didn't get to do as much as she did in the other movie that she was in we covered.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah. She has arguably a much bigger role in the other film, which was also... April

SPEAKER_00

Fool's Day. I think she was in the opening scene that we played when we start that episode. I think

SPEAKER_02

you're right. Yeah. Yep, yep. Yeah, she has a little bit more of a dynamic character in that film. I also just really like her in this movie. I wish that there was more we could talk about with her filmography, but it might have been very much her choice to step away from acting. It doesn't totally... Like. Vibe for me that her and William Zabka were even a couple.

SPEAKER_00

No, it didn't. It didn't even really feel like they they didn't show them like spending like really time like he was kind of around. And if anyone else was talking to her, then he would get like

SPEAKER_02

wildly possessive.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. So like there was never anything showing them anything. like really big boyfriend, girlfriend.

SPEAKER_02

No, I never saw any kind of like intimacy or kindness or sweetness or romance between them. It was always just her being like, don't be so mean. Don't beat them up. Like,

SPEAKER_01

so I

SPEAKER_02

don't know, but I get it. Like, and she is arguably the most popular girl in school because she's homecoming queen or prom queen. Prom

SPEAKER_00

queen,

SPEAKER_02

yeah. And, you know, as far as her credits go, Besides April Fool's Day in this film, I have the movie Remote Control. And also she did have some TV appearances. But her last credit so far, which I think we could probably say she's retired because it was 30 years ago. Last credit was in 1992 for a film called Out on a Limb. But yeah, I really liked her too in this movie. Film synopsis.

SPEAKER_00

What do we got?

SPEAKER_02

It's a long one.

SPEAKER_00

Is it? Okay, let's go.

SPEAKER_02

Terry feels discriminated against when the summer jobs at the Sun Tribune go to two guys. She decides to do something about it. She dresses like a guy and gets a haircut. Will students at the other high school notice? Girls notice, air quotes, him.

SPEAKER_00

That's a weird synopsis, like... Just the girls notice him. I mean,

SPEAKER_02

like, it's accurate. Like, it is exactly what happens.

SPEAKER_00

It is,

SPEAKER_02

yeah. Yeah, I mean, it's whatever. I mean, the thing... Here's my thoughts. I feel like, okay, so we're smack dab in the middle of 1985. So we're very much in the era of, like, of there being a lot of, like, raunchy teenage comedies. And I don't know how far they strayed from, like, the original concept for this film. The brother's room does not obscure anything about all the Playboy stuff. Centerfolds that he has on his walls. That

SPEAKER_00

was the fucking craziest thing about his character is how he was literally just like he had stacks of Playboys that he was just like taking centerfolds out of and like pinning them up on on like the walls, the seal everywhere. Everywhere. What the fuck? Yeah. What?

SPEAKER_02

So there's that. And then I alluded to it at the beginning of this conversation that I was but a wee girl and this movie was on and the scene where Terry– She's trying to– so basically, if you haven't seen this movie, I hope you– I mean, I don't know if in good faith I could say you should go see this movie. But I think to understand this podcast,

SPEAKER_00

you should see the movie. It's on Tubi. Yeah. Just get the Tubi app. It's free. Watch it. That's free. Get a couple commercials. It's fine.

SPEAKER_02

To understand eventually what happens is that– so everything culminates at the prom. She's very jealous of Rick because of the clip that you pulled where Rick is making fun of William Zabka. I'm just going to call him that. What's his actual bully name? Greg. Greg. That's right. So he's making fun of Greg. That turns Debra– like he's like going to take advantage of the situation. He asks if Debra will go to prom with him, meaning Rick. She says yes. Terry's very jealous because Terry obviously is into Rick.

SPEAKER_01

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_02

And so while at prom, though, because Kevin, the college boyfriend, is sick and tired of basically, like, getting stood up, not being told what's going on.

SPEAKER_00

He crashes this prom.

SPEAKER_02

He crashes the prom with Buddy. Yes. Like, with him. Why? Well, because Buddy knew there was going to be a shit show.

SPEAKER_00

Why? Buddy's a character in this movie and he has to be there. But

SPEAKER_02

I get it. That actually seemed very organically motivated where he's like, I got to see what happens. Yes.

SPEAKER_00

It worked out well for him.

SPEAKER_02

It did. And actually it's kind of Buddy's redeeming moment as well. Yeah. I mean, look, for whatever it's worth, I think it's super fucking weird that these siblings are constantly talking about sex, sometimes in very explicit ways. It

SPEAKER_00

was a bit much.

SPEAKER_02

But they seem to really love each other. They seem to have each other's backs.

SPEAKER_00

They're good siblings.

SPEAKER_02

They're good siblings. So when Kevin arrives, because everybody thinks Terry is a dude,

SPEAKER_00

and

SPEAKER_02

he says, I am Terry's boyfriend.

SPEAKER_00

And everyone's like, what?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Yeah. I mean, look, the one thing I'll say is this. So Rick is like, oh, I'm just his friend.

SPEAKER_00

Again, this is 1985. If someone came in and said that same thing in 2025, people would be like, oh, okay.

SPEAKER_02

You'd hope. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Depending on where you are.

SPEAKER_02

I mean, I understand as a teenage boy who at that time in history is like, I'm not trying to take your— your guy away thinking that Terry is a guy. However, I'll say this. When Terry pulls him away and says, I need to explain something to you.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

And before Terry gets even the chance to say I'm a girl, Rick does seem accepting of him. I'm going to call him him in that moment.

SPEAKER_00

He is. Yes. He's like, you're gay. That's not for me.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

But that's you. We're still friends.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

For 1985? Yeah. Yeah. Progressive.

SPEAKER_00

It wasn't like a reaction of like completely rejecting you as a person. Like what the fuck is wrong with you or

SPEAKER_02

get away from me. It wasn't anything like that.

SPEAKER_00

No. So. The thing is, when she says that she's a girl, she's a woman, and he says, yeah, and I'm Cindy Lauper.

SPEAKER_02

And I think he gets flack for that.

SPEAKER_00

He has stated that this mispronunciation has haunted him. And he hears the butchered surname almost daily.

SPEAKER_02

Aw,

SPEAKER_00

poor

SPEAKER_02

guy. I misspeak about things all the time.

SPEAKER_00

Just give this guy a break, okay?

SPEAKER_02

Every single episode, I'm saying things wrong. It's the

SPEAKER_00

first thing we clocked when that scene happens. Like, what did he say?

SPEAKER_02

I mean, did he not know who she was? I don't know. And it's also like, why didn't you just reshoot the scene? Yeah,

SPEAKER_00

yeah. So many options, but there it is.

SPEAKER_02

It's like in Clueless, Alicia Silverstone... Did not know that you say this particular word as Haitians.

SPEAKER_00

Did you say Haitians?

SPEAKER_02

She says Haitians. Okay. And they kept it. because it kind of works for the character. In that movie, it works. In this one, you're like, huh?

SPEAKER_00

Because you already kind of think that Rick is not weird necessarily, but he's like a little bit of his own thing. He is. So when he said Cindy Lauper, it's totally possible that that's just like, that's how the character would say it. That's how the

SPEAKER_02

character would say it. So anyway, just to, you know, if we're trying to find little diamonds in the dust here of like things that are like worthwhile noting about the film in a positive way

SPEAKER_00

yeah

SPEAKER_02

i think that's one of them that he doesn't immediately reject terry

SPEAKER_00

but then he still doesn't believe her and so she has to find a way to make him believe correct so what does she do

SPEAKER_02

what does she do

SPEAKER_00

yeah what does she do because i had not seen the movie before and before it happened you're like this is one of my core memories

SPEAKER_02

To not know that this is coming. I mean, even with all the nudity on the walls of Buddy's room. There's

SPEAKER_00

so much nudity in so many movies that we watched. Like, honestly, her flashing him really didn't faze me. I'm like, oh, wow, this is like we made it really far in this movie.

SPEAKER_02

It's a terrible thing to experience with your parent.

SPEAKER_00

But that like you made it like 95% of the way through the movie and then suddenly boobs. But I just imagine like all the shit with Buddy and all the other like innuendo and raunchiness. And then you're probably thinking like, oh, my God, we're going to make it out of here unscathed.

SPEAKER_02

So, I mean, I don't know. Off the top of my head, I don't know what you do to convince someone. I mean, maybe she could have just been like, let me go home and dress up and I'll show you that. I am a girl. I don't need to, but

SPEAKER_00

whatever. That for sure is what happened again then in She's All That. Wait, not She's All That. She's the Man. She's the Man, yeah. Amanda Bynes did the same thing.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. I mean, all Amanda Bynes, and the only reason why I have a clear memory of that film is because it randomly was on TV the other day when I was doing stuff.

SPEAKER_00

But I don't think they actually show the nudity in that movie versus... There's no nudity. Yeah, I didn't think so. There's none. It's like

SPEAKER_02

a PG film.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

And all she does is she takes off her wig.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

So that's actually the main difference, is that Amanda Bynes never cuts her hair, and she's the man. She wears a wig.

SPEAKER_00

Okay.

SPEAKER_02

And so all she has to do is take off her wig, and she wears like... Like she wears like prosthetic brows, eyebrows, and that look, I guess, a little bit more rugged to denote her being a boy. Okay.

SPEAKER_00

So she

SPEAKER_02

takes off her eyebrows and she takes off her wig and they're like, oh my God, you're a girl. Terry,

SPEAKER_00

in contrast, wore a wig at the beginning of the movie. And had her hair cut. But yeah, she was wearing a wig in the opening scenes when she, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Well, was she wearing a wig or did she have her hair long and then they cut it for her scenes as a boy?

SPEAKER_00

No, she wore a wig for the early scenes. Oh,

SPEAKER_02

interesting.

SPEAKER_00

But then whatever hair she did, so it was the wig was probably longer.

SPEAKER_02

Was that really her

SPEAKER_00

hairstyle? I don't know if it was. Like the beginning with the wig, I don't know. But like the short hair.

SPEAKER_02

Did she have like basically Janet from Three's Company hair?

SPEAKER_00

She still had it cut, so she wore a wig and she had it cut.

SPEAKER_02

Interesting.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. There's a lot of hair stuff going

SPEAKER_02

on. There's a lot of hair stuff going on. So then he's like, okay, I get it. But then he's obviously upset. So this is the one thing about all these fucking types of movies where they do this shit, where the person who's upset has every fucking right to be upset. Like, you completely betrayed that person by being– A person that you are not, you know? And, like, maybe he would have never confided to you about certain things if he knew you were a girl or whatever, whatever, whatever. Yeah. So he is understandably not okay with her being a girl. He storms off, right? Buddy hooks up with Sandy. And then, like I said, this is an epilogue. So I do think this is, like, past the initial, like, two-week episode. Because her

SPEAKER_00

hair had slightly grown out.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Oh, and sorry, we kind of missed the fact that she does win the contest because of the story she submits about her experience with Rick.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, this all would have been for nothing.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

If she had not also won that writing contest. But

SPEAKER_02

also it's like, yeah, I guess you have the right to tell your story, but I don't know if it's okay to tell somebody else's story in such a public way. Yeah. Like it's kind of not okay.

UNKNOWN

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

No.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. And it's very similar to Never Been Kissed, where it's like, yes, that is Drew Barrymore's story, but she is also telling... I mean, the... And arguably, Dicey. Dicey, that she's telling his story because he's a teacher. Yeah.

UNKNOWN

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

It's a good thing that she, in fact, was not a student.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

But still, like, it's a little to catch a predator. Yes.

UNKNOWN

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Yes.

SPEAKER_00

Like, because you didn't know that, teach.

SPEAKER_02

You didn't know that, teacher. But back to Terry. So she wins. The story is posted in the newspaper. She now has the summer job. And like Buddy, I guess, comes to pick her up or something like that from her job. And then they're talking for a second. They turn around and there's Rick. And Buddy conveniently gets picked up by some site, like biker chick.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. That was weird. I'm like, wait, do I know who that is? No, no. Just, just some biker chick rolls up and he hops on and they take off. Yep. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

So that's how his story plays out. And then pretty quickly Rick's like, like, he's like, you know, I read your story. Is it true? And she's like, yes. And I don't, I think they kiss even, but they, which I kind of like, I don't think they do, do they?

SPEAKER_00

I mean, they, I think they kiss at the prom, which is a whole other thing. Well, yes, that's right. She

SPEAKER_02

kisses him. And that also was not okay for her to just do that in front of everybody. Yeah. Regardless of whether or not they thought she was a guy or a girl.

SPEAKER_00

But then at the end, they just kind of like, they just go. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, they're like, the assumption is that they're probably going to repair the relationship and probably date. Yeah. So, and that is just one of the guys.

SPEAKER_00

And it was actually filmed in parts of Phoenix. Oh, okay. Scottsdale. You

SPEAKER_02

clocked that right away.

SPEAKER_00

Well, yeah, I recognize the plates. And, like, she had to have, like... Stuff wrapped around her body when she was filming the male scenes and it was like 90. So a

SPEAKER_02

lot of it is actually on location.

SPEAKER_00

So I don't know how the problem was at the ocean.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah,

SPEAKER_00

I mean,

SPEAKER_02

or like maybe it could have been a lake. Yeah,

SPEAKER_00

I feel like there was a lot of there's a

SPEAKER_02

lot of way back. Oh, and that's what I was going to say. Buddy's one redeeming quality, aside from the fact that it seems like he just does have a good relationship with his sister. He helps her with his whole ruse. But at the end, when Greg throws her into the water, he attacks Greg as well. Yes. So probably with full knowledge that he's going to get his ass beat.

SPEAKER_00

Buddy don't care.

SPEAKER_02

Buddy don't care.

SPEAKER_00

Buddy don't give a shit.

SPEAKER_02

So I'm very curious, Derek, would you ever want to watch this movie again? I

SPEAKER_00

think I would. I think it was fun. Yeah. It was so ridiculous. I mean, again, watching it for the first time in 2025 was eye-opening in terms of what would have been... Not only can we do this, but yeah, we're going to do this, and it's just going to be hilarious, and everyone's going to enjoy that. What a difference... I'm not

SPEAKER_02

quite sure how they would fashion that film, because even She's the Man, like, I think conception, like, ideas about gender, sexuality, like, all of that, even... What would that have been now, 15 years ago?

SPEAKER_00

Well, like in terms of right right now, yeah, no, I don't think.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Well, I just mean that like I think that there would just be a lot more nuance you would have to bring to what does it mean that somebody is presenting as something that they're not.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, no, I think it's possible to do that. But like who am I to say that? I think that like– Yeah. Yeah. Because we watch older comedies, and it seems like they're dated in ways where you couldn't do that. But then you watch current comedies, and they've just somehow, in some ways, found ways to evolve those jokes in ways that work.

SPEAKER_02

But also, we don't get many... Comedies are now relegated to streaming.

SPEAKER_00

We don't... No, that's fair. A lot of them get missed. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

All right. Sneak peek.

SPEAKER_00

Okay. Once again... I have no prior knowledge. You have

SPEAKER_02

no prior knowledge.

SPEAKER_00

I have nothing. And I appreciate that you've stopped telling me since you knew that I would forget before each...

SPEAKER_02

Oh, that's not why. I just haven't kind of thought about it until we're recording. This is not a clue, but I think... Even though I... Look, I really appreciate that you said that you enjoyed this movie. I'm not saying it's a good movie, but it is a film from my youth, I guess you would say. I

SPEAKER_00

know where to find

SPEAKER_02

it. Yeah. Yeah. We own it.

SPEAKER_00

That's where I'd find it.

SPEAKER_02

So I think you'll enjoy this movie more. This is kind of a Derek pick. Oh, really? Even though you don't even know it.

SPEAKER_00

That's my favorite.

SPEAKER_02

So it is bringing back a couple people that we have talked about a few times in terms of actor, main actor and director.

SPEAKER_00

Interesting. Interesting. Okay.

SPEAKER_02

They have worked together several times.

SPEAKER_00

Okay. That's good. Good clue.

SPEAKER_02

And actually, as far as actor is concerned, you, in a roundabout way, referred to him when you brought up Bone Tomahawk.

SPEAKER_00

So

SPEAKER_02

first, who's the actor? And it's not Kirk Douglas.

SPEAKER_00

God damn it. It's not Michael Douglas. No,

SPEAKER_02

who is actually

SPEAKER_00

Bo Tomahawk? Oh, Kurt Russell.

SPEAKER_02

Okay.

UNKNOWN

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

So who's the director he's worked with a lot?

SPEAKER_00

I don't know. Yes, you do. No, I definitely don't.

SPEAKER_02

Yes, you do. I

SPEAKER_00

don't know what directors he's worked with. John Carpenter. Oh, yeah, John Carpenter. Okay, that makes sense. Because of Big Trouble in Little China. Oh, my God, we're going to do Escape from New York. Yes. Oh, yes.

SPEAKER_02

Good job.

SPEAKER_00

Took me a second, but I got there.

SPEAKER_02

I know. That was very good. Yes. We were doing Escape from New York.

SPEAKER_00

Snake Bliskin. That's his character. I

SPEAKER_02

don't really know the movie that well.

SPEAKER_00

So this is

SPEAKER_02

going to be you leading the charge on this one.

SPEAKER_00

Lee Van Cleef is in it. Yes.

SPEAKER_02

I knew that that's a big reason

SPEAKER_00

why you love it. Ernest Borgnine.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. There's a lot of people in it.

SPEAKER_00

There are. Harry Dean Stanton. Yep. Adrienne Barbeau. Harry Dean Stanton is a bit of a snake in this. Yeah. Yeah. He's not a great guy.

SPEAKER_02

Isn't Kurt Russell's name Snake?

SPEAKER_00

His nickname is Snake, but Harry Dean Stanton is an actual. Is an actual

SPEAKER_02

snake.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, he acts very snaky.

SPEAKER_02

Got it. Yeah. Yeah, there's a lot of people in this movie. So I'm excited to talk about it with you. And on that note, thank you to everyone for taking the time to listen to our podcast when we know you have a lot of choices out there. Oh, if you'd like to get in touch with us, we'd love to talk to you. Oh, we did not do our call to action. No, I

SPEAKER_00

did. A couple times. What did you do? I can't remember. I think I did it though.

SPEAKER_02

I mean, I honestly, I have no idea how well known this movie is. So I'm sorry that sometimes my call to actions are pretty basic, but I'm just like truly curious who the hell knows about this movie.

SPEAKER_00

That's a good one.

SPEAKER_02

So if you want to reach out.

SPEAKER_00

Now that we have reached the end of this episode, have you heard of this?

UNKNOWN

No.

SPEAKER_02

You can reach out through Facebook, Instagram, or Blue Sky. It is the same handle at all three. It is at 80s Montage Pod.

SPEAKER_00

I feel like there used to be another one that we used to be on, but then that one is now run by an actual Nazi. Is that what happened? So yeah, we're not on that one. Blue

SPEAKER_02

Sky for the win. Yeah. And the handle at 80s Montage Pod. MontagePod in ages is 8-0-S. It's because I talk too fast sometimes. I can't get the words out. On that note. Yes. Thank you, everybody. We'll talk to you again in two weeks' time.
