spk_0:   0:07
This is episode number 24. I am Justin Wood

spk_1:   0:10
and I am Shauna Would

spk_0:   0:11
How are you, honey?

spk_1:   0:12
I'm good. How are you?

spk_0:   0:14
I'm awesome. Good. Are you ready for this?

spk_1:   0:16
I have

spk_0:   0:17
such a great story.

spk_1:   0:18
We D'oh, I'm already tickled Just thinking about it. Go. So what are we talking about today?

spk_0:   0:23
We're talking about how to boost your immune system. All

spk_1:   0:28
right, so only

spk_0:   0:30
Yeah. So we've had to go the hospital to see a new baby born right? Somebody not ours. Yeah. Family

spk_1:   0:37
member had a new baby going up to. That's so

spk_0:   0:40
we took the whole troop. I'm not sure what we're thinking. It was during the winter. It was during the flu season, so I gave our kids. I think we had four of the time. Maybe

spk_1:   0:50
Maybe I don't remember.

spk_0:   0:51
I gave them the speech. Do not I just started off mean do not be touching with your hands touching the rail because they love to just rub the rail up and down. You know what I mean? You don't talk about

spk_1:   1:06
you seeing them

spk_0:   1:07
do it like, a 1,000,000 times I was like, Do not be touching with your hands. The rail, like Okay, what did I say? Doing too? It's a real And I was, like,

spk_1:   1:18
Do know every touching the buttons on the elevator.

spk_0:   1:20
You got it? Like I was in. You remember this, right? You remember this of Gosh, are you okay? Okay. So I gave them, like, do not touch everything I could possibly think of. You don't touch with your hands.

spk_1:   1:34
Anything. So

spk_0:   1:36
and it was It was a

spk_1:   1:36
bad, really specific direction. Loud what to do with their hands. You said so to help you not touch any of these things. Everyone put your hands in your pockets. You're not Laugh right out of your pocket.

spk_0:   1:54
So? So we make it up. The truth doesn't Well, it's okay. It's one of those dreams where you have, you know, the mother has the bad. And then the father, sweet or whatever. You know, on the other hand, it's going

spk_1:   2:05
to half room.

spk_0:   2:06
Yeah. Yeah, kind of like that. So it was like that, right? So we brought him in one by one. Right? Right. And I can guess what child? Itwas who started it, But I don't know that for sure. I wasn't there. So as I come to walk next child back in from the other half room, I look over and we have a couple of kids with their hands in the right place, right? Hands tucked in the right spot. And they're licking their licking the arm of the chair with her tongue, huh? I just about blew a gasket about. Had to have the hospital security come to haul me away. Yeah,

spk_1:   2:46
the woods Are you doing with

spk_0:   2:51
a big Salter? I e. They looked at me like we don't know where we've been. Father, there's been an alien abduction or some. They just had that look like Yeah. Yeah, like that. I don't know what happened after that. I I just about lost it. I think I just started dying, laughing. I don't know anyway, So they were licking the arm chairs. Ah,

spk_1:   3:14
in the US,

spk_0:   3:14
in the hospital. So, you know, that's just the way it rolls sometimes. So that was my That was one of my best dad speeches to You know what I mean? It was very disheartening as a father Good Waas.

spk_1:   3:28
Nobody came down with anything, and we all lived until the tail Probably. Okay, but we decided that talking about how to boost your immune system, which includes not looking furniture Please

spk_0:   3:40
don't like the furniture. The r r the armchairs. Oh, arm rest one of my guys. The arm. Rest of the armchairs.

spk_1:   3:47
Right. We thought it would be a good topic today because of the Corona virus being so much in the news. And I am all for the media sharing information. But I am not all for the fear that oftentimes get stirred up. Right? Right,

spk_0:   4:06
right, right, right. Yeah. So yeah. Information. Good. Fear driven stuff bad because it leads you to more stress. More stress leads you to more illness. You

spk_1:   4:17
help. It's not help.

spk_0:   4:18
So the problem with illness. Where you gonna talk about with your immune system?

spk_1:   4:22
Okay, so basically.

spk_0:   4:23
Well, first off, we're not doctors. We don't know. We don't know any medical science research backing that gives us any accreditation for anything.

spk_1:   4:34
Right? So you obviously talked to somebody who knows what they're talking about. Don't take our medical advice. There's our little disclaimer. Um, so if you picture again. A wheel. And you have illness at the top of it and stress at the bottom of it. Illness leads to stress. Stress leads to more illness. And it's just this terrible cycle.

spk_0:   4:55
That's good. I don't know. That would've believed that necessarily mean. Oh, I'm tough enough. But now, in my age, I'm like, Oh, yeah, stressed. Or you get stress. Yeah.

spk_1:   5:03
Yes, it is. And you can do a Google search and come up with lots and lots of scientific studies and experiments where they have put people in stressful situations. Repetitive Lee. And then why do people do these experiments anyway? They expose them to germs and all of these kind of things. So, okay, Yesterday.

spk_0:   5:22
So I'm just gonna jump right now. We can talk about this. I won't jump down the solutions. Here's the deal. You have to build habits, all the stuff we're gonna talk about. You like Yeah, I know that. Yeah, I know that you know that, but until you build habits of and routines of healthiness in your life, your immune system's gonna just get pummeled right? Every winter, right? When survive, Mindy stops being made in your body right from the sun?

spk_1:   5:48
Yes. So I was having a conversation with a friend, and I know that she does a lot of research. And so I just asked her. I was like, So what do you think about the Corona virus? Have you You know, what have you been hearing kind of thing? Because she's also in the health industry, and she pointed out that she had done some research early on and found out. You know that if someone with a healthy immune system gets that virus, their body is going to be able to get over it in 6 to 8 days. And so then the question becomes, Well, do you have a healthy immune system or not? Because whether it's Corona virus or whatever X Y Z virus, whatever comes out next, the whole thing is how healthy is your immune system? Because that's what your body was designed to do is to fight off these things

spk_0:   6:35
right, and we all need to take steps to be healthier. Absolutely. I mean so it's like, even if you think you're the best or you think you're at the worst health, you still have steps to take right like for me? Usually this time of day, I'm chugging coffee, right?

spk_1:   6:50
I'm so proud of

spk_0:   6:51
a green drink. Uh, what is this?

spk_1:   6:54
It's this into, like, a powdered version of juiced grass is green fruit.

spk_0:   6:59
I mean, yeah, I can see that. And I didn't like I felt like it was almost like a shot of coffee. You know,

spk_1:   7:04
there's a natural energy

spk_0:   7:05
from tradition my body needs. Yes, that's a very small step for me, but it is a big step, right? My body was like, just go get the

spk_1:   7:14
champion of the world champion of the world right here. So things that we all know, But it's good to be reminded of. And you pointed out the 1st 1 is good nutrition, right? And the reality is that the modern Western lifestyle is not a very healthy lifestyle.

spk_0:   7:35
Right? So and I noticed also, we talked about with diet Low sugar. Yes, it's part of good nutrition. Yeah, because I found that over several years, whenever I went on a heavy sugar binge, like with birthday parties and that kind of stuff and then because we have six kids, people just give us whatever's left over. Oh, you won't. You want 12 dozen doughnuts from this thing? You got all those kids. Take the doughnuts, which

spk_1:   8:05
we appreciate the love we

spk_0:   8:07
do. We do

spk_1:   8:09
that. Our kids probably get given more cupcakes in the average child. I would say they

spk_0:   8:13
do. And the problem is the dads like, Oh, a cupcake. Oh, a dozen doughnuts. Oh, yeah, you know what I mean? Because if we because we know if we don't buy them, we don't eat them. Right? So we try to keep them out of house. But I know several years, my point was the more sugar right. Then I would get sick because it sugar lowers your immune system. Absolutely. I don't know how it works, but it does.

spk_1:   8:38
And it has to do with not for a full scientific explanation. But when you have a lot of sugar, it increases your inflammation and inflammation works against your immune system. In a nutshell. Um so diet, putting the good things in and decreasing the bad stuff that we eat and a top that list is sugar sleep. And that's an area that I deserve the high five in, because I've really had that as a growth area in the last, you know, compared to where I was in Oregon. You

spk_0:   9:09
have, haven't you?

spk_1:   9:10
I had. Yeah. Give me. Oh, thanks. All right. Thanks. So and that, you know, could be little. And people could be like, Well, of course, you need to get a good amount of sleep. But I was really trying to live life on 4 to 5 hours of sleep,

spk_0:   9:25
right? Because your routine was built so that you couldn't sleep right. You don't have to

spk_1:   9:31
change some big, big things in my routine to allow for more sleep,

spk_0:   9:36
Which that was hard because you're a nine hour and you basically had to turn that off, right? You know what I mean? Like, cause you get cranking it like large 10 or 11 large. You get going?

spk_1:   9:45
Yes, but I can tell that I am enjoying more and I have fewer headaches. I can

spk_0:   9:53
tell you're more enjoyable

spk_1:   9:56
because I'm really one of those people who needs a good eight hours.

spk_0:   9:59
Oh, yeah, I am, too.

spk_1:   10:00
And I was trying to fake it, and

spk_0:   10:02
I wish wasn't working. I mean, I think one thing we change about ourselves. If we were basically Oh, if we could sleep six hours or five hours, that would be fantastic. I can't.

spk_1:   10:11
So stress. Also, lots of studies correlating high stress levels with weakened immune systems. Um, and then, you know, you've got some basic hygiene things as faras handwashing. Like, I'm amazed the number of people like I know I'm a little bit maybe over the edge. And so I always have a hand sanitizer spray with me. And I'm like, in mom modes where everybody's opinions. But there's a lot of adults that I interact with their like now. All right, it is

spk_0:   10:43
That's lovely.

spk_1:   10:44
Boost my immune system. We're not eating out of the same chip bowl.

spk_0:   10:49
Yeah. Yeah, Well, I think part of it, too. With six kids, it takes us a month. Sometimes a pass, uh, an illness around, You know what I mean? Like from start to finish, right? Sometimes, right? Sometimes we just pray that it just happens quickly. It's gonna

spk_1:   11:03
happen. And I think whenever you have someone in the family that has any kind of special health concerns, right, it becomes because we had one time one of our surgeries was postponed from one of our kids because we had just been passing around a virus. And so, you know, I mean, that was huge at the time for us. And so particularly if you have somebody with a weakened immune system because of a health issue, it becomes even more important. Um, we talked about inflammation and then also healthy circulation,

spk_0:   11:37
which means you gotta be moving.

spk_1:   11:39
You have to be moving. Um, and there are devices that can help with that. But then there are other things that air free, um, medical devices, But then other things like cold showers walking, walking, breathing, doing, breathing techniques. All of those things are ways that you can increase your circulation because you think, you know, I want the good blood cells bringing me fresh oxygen. And I want all the toxic stuff to be removed and all that happens with our circulatory system,

spk_0:   12:12
Right? So going back to the solution that we talked about from the beginning, everybody knows this stuff, right? Right. Even when I got sick, like even you want to get sick, I get so frustrated myself because I look at my sleep, I look in my diet and I'm like, What the heck was I thinking? You know what I mean,

spk_1:   12:28
Right? Could you could almost put it on the calendar this time? Yeah. Yeah, I think

spk_0:   12:32
so. The key is that I know for myself. You have to build it in routine all the information about Oh, whatever. Like there's no miracle pill. It's gonna boost your immune system. Right? So you have to build it into your life. You have to build into your diet. And that's hard if you're on the move, if you gotta work in meetings and whatever you know, But it's possible it's possible. Takes more effort. Right? So you gotta find out what's best for you. What about for her kids? Oh,

spk_1:   13:03
what do

spk_0:   13:03
we do?

spk_1:   13:03
Absolutely. I remember we met with a family when we were our kids were little. Maybe we only had one, maybe two Children at the time. And we met with him and were like, Hey, we noticed that your kids are always healthy and, like I was really waiting for them to tell me the name of a vitamin right. And they said we always have our kids in bed by whatever time, like we stick to it, and we don't mess with. And they always get a good night's sleep.

spk_0:   13:29
That's good. That's really good. So I would say vitamin D because when my vitamin D tank was working Third shift. Basically, that was huge, because my I got sick just all the time, right? I could not. So

spk_1:   13:42
and I think the modern diet, like we really live in a time and age that you're gonna have to have a high quality supplement to get everything you Because we're not gonna get it from our diet. Right? Right. Which would be several

spk_0:   13:54
more you could discuss. Right, Right. Yeah, but you could go to your doctor and just get a physical. It's very easy, right? Get a blood test. See if you're low on anything because you could try a bunch of stuff and find out that Hey, you're deficient in one little bump of one little vitamin can really change your

spk_1:   14:13
right. That's definitely a starting point for people if they're not sure where to begin,

spk_0:   14:18
Right? Right, Right. Yeah, but the key is I think you just gotta begin somewhere. Yes, where you're at.

spk_1:   14:24
And I think when we take action, like adding something new into our routine that's healthy for us, then that gives us some control. Which as we've talked about in a previous podcast, there are some things you can control and some things you cannot control. Right now, we cannot control that. There is the Corona virus in China. What we can control is that I am not getting enough sleep. And we were drinking greens instead of on the afternoon with awesome and focusing on those things. The things we can control always helps this decrease our stress

spk_0:   14:57
for sure. And it increases your energy because now I was so Draghi a couple hours ago when I started on this drink and I'm like, Oh, yeah, I'm feeling good, you know? Awesome. There we go.
