spk_1:   0:26
Number. I have to look 38. I'm Justin

spk_0:   0:30
and I am Shauna Would

spk_1:   0:31
How are you today?

spk_0:   0:32
I'm doing well. How are you?

spk_1:   0:33
I'm good. It is a beautiful spring day.

spk_0:   0:36
Awesome. Outside here today, Sunshine didn't know if we're going to see that, it's I feel like it's been so rainy for the last couple weeks. So nice to have a warm spring day.

spk_1:   0:48
So what we're talking about today,

spk_0:   0:49
Today we're talking about being a consumer versus being a producer, and this is actually something that we had started writing out notes about a month ago for this one. But it has taken on a whole new level of meeting. Why, What's happened

spk_1:   1:07
in the world?

spk_0:   1:08
So for those who may be, you're gonna listen to this episode a year from now. We are living in the time of social distancing and everybody working from home and schooling from home and that kind of thing. Um, so it is April 2nd as we record this, which is typically the time of year that because we garden as a family, we start You know, we've already been looking through gardening catalogs and that kind of thing for a few months now, but we're actually starting to put some traction, some doing some motions and steps and that kind of thing, Thinking about what will it be like in a few months here at our house? So in a few months, early in the morning, everybody will be outside picking blueberries off the plants, and then there's kind of like a down time after that. We try to hit it early before it gets so super hot. Then we'll be doing inside stuff during the heat of the day and

spk_1:   2:05
because we promote homeschool your own.

spk_0:   2:07
Yeah, we home school year round work year round. You know, that kind of thing's life doesn't change a whole lot. Um, and then late in the evening will be watering things and, you know, back in the house, be breaking up beans or whatever. We've gotten out of the garden that day, starting the can. Things freeze, things, all of that. Lots of production happens here in the summers,

spk_1:   2:28
right? It is very good, but what we've learned with growing in doing all this stuff when you end up killing a lot of things, right? Not

spk_0:   2:38
just me, personally. Although I kill more than the average bear,

spk_1:   2:41
You always say you have a brown thumb,

spk_0:   2:43
right? Give me your weeds, they'll die.

spk_1:   2:45
But we just consume way too much like as people, as a society, without learning our understanding or knowing the process of producing. Right? Right when you say

spk_0:   2:55
I would say That's fair. What's the

spk_1:   2:58
story? You don't know?

spk_0:   2:59
I was laughing. We were talking about what? I was a volunteer teacher one summer in Kenya and the kids were asking me like, Well, what foods do you eat for your meals? And what they meant by that was actually like, What food do you produce? Because everything they ate, they produced.

spk_1:   3:17
It was very local. Economy

spk_0:   3:19
was very local economy, and I come in. I always have only lived in the city ever before my married life. And so I was like, Oh, in America, we'd anything. What do you want? You can have anything in the world. It all comes in cans and boxes at the grocery store. You want Italian? You want French? You want Mexican? Whatever you want. You just go get into the grocery store. Right. So anyway, they just kind of looked at me really strange. I was like Everything comes in plastic or metal. I was so disconnected from the idea of producing any of my own food,

spk_1:   3:51
right? And I kind of grew up. You know, we talked about the other episode with gardening. I grew up around gardening, but I didn't really take notes, you know what I mean? Like, it was something that the generation before the two generations before me did that I witnessed. Right? But I wasn't paying super close attention, You know what I mean? Yeah. So I feel like we've got to get out of this consumer mentality and wow, what a time to start thinking about What do I actually produce? What do I make? And I could see that it doesn't necessarily have to be gardening, right? We're just talking about more about the mindset right of consuming versus the mindset of producing.

spk_0:   4:29
So here is something funny that I have noticed just going through people's Facebook posts kind of thing. Like all everybody's making some bread at home these days. Exactly Like this stuff. Air making bread there. You know, you could make a brew. Not me, but I did talk to I did talk to her teenager right now, but I think that there's I did read an article it was talking about, You know, just on a very deep carnal level, when there is stress and there's crisis in our world. Then we want to get back to those feelings of self sufficiency and productivity. Like we can take care of feeding our family. We can take care of sheltering our family, that kind of thing,

spk_1:   5:14
right? Right. Now, of course, our supply chains air so long and so stretched out. Um, don't We're not talking about, like, all of a sudden overnight be self sufficient. You know, we're not saying that, but we are saying it's really good time to think about what you produce. It might be you would work. You do woodworking stuff. Maybe you produce like my mom is making mask for, um, the corona virus. Right. Whatever you call them, Right. Whatever. This mascot. Yeah. Kobe, 19 sir. You know, she's making, though, So we're not saying you have to go out and grow a big garden, but it is a good time to start thinking about what? What do you produce and what can you produce more off? Just baby steps,

spk_0:   5:53
right? Absolutely. And a lot of this is just good for your psychology. In a time of stress to be productive and to be doing things with your hand and to feel like you have a purpose and that you are achieving a goal and that you are useful, those are all really important for our mental health,

spk_1:   6:11
right? Right, Because I have noticed that I just want to go doom or gardening,

spk_0:   6:16
right? I think it's more fun when he goes and he does the Carney.

spk_1:   6:21
Yeah, not because, you know, we have stuff dying already because it's already, you know, coming about a seed. And then some of it dies. And I forgot the water. This or that. I mean, like, that's just part of it, but actually, just doing and seeing something being created is pretty cool.

spk_0:   6:36
It ISS it's very cool, and it's great for our kids right now to who are home and out of. Maybe they're regular school element in that kind of thing. So we involve our kids in almost everything that we do production wise as faras stuff in the kitchen. And

spk_1:   6:54
we're like forced labour sometimes.

spk_0:   6:55
Yeah, yeah, but they get we pay them in minutes on the Xbox, so they're okay with it. Um,

spk_1:   7:02
but like you say, I mean, we've all binged on Netflix or some other stream who loo or whatever your favorite binging, um, avenue is. But afterward, a lot of times you feel like, uh I kind of like, yucky, icky. So that's kind of what we're talking about. Feel like we're talking towards those things of Maybe I don't need to consume as much news as, Hey, I just know it's bad and that's good enough for now. You know what I mean? Like, if the tornado is coming over the hill, hopefully I'll have the siren or something that warns me. But otherwise there's lots of tornadoes going on around right called the Corona virus, right?

spk_0:   7:40
Yeah. So things that it's a great time of year to be doing include, like, I love this. I love the red solo cups because there was a time in my life that I only knew how to consume with a red solo cup. But now I have learned. Look, you can plant things inside a red solo cup.

spk_1:   8:01
So people who

spk_0:   8:02
that people are all the cereal on the bottom of

spk_1:   8:05
these are Yeah, these air. Very simple. Let me just explain this. So this is a great way to do tomatoes. So we have a red solo cup, you know, the regular size. And we got maybe, like, an inch or two of dirt down the bottom had the kids measure, which means it's probably an

spk_0:   8:19
all over the

spk_1:   8:20
tube, but they did a good job of the end. Um, so it's it's it starts here like tomato. This is great for tomato because as the seedling gets bigger and bigger, you can start to fill it in with more more dirt, because with the stem of a tomato, it will actually turn to route. So then, by the time this thing is really big, this whole solo cup will be routed, which makes for really good. It's not just a little sliver of root, right, So that's awesome. So these are B s. These three beefsteaks

spk_0:   8:56
are Teenager thought he was so funny.

spk_1:   9:00
Yes. Who? He did that like the whole time?

spk_0:   9:04
Yeah, Okay. So other things that are easy to do so you can start and even guys like at Wal Mart right now, they've got a huge gardening section. So it is one of the stories that is still open and available. Right? Um, loves

spk_1:   9:18
is open. Really?

spk_0:   9:20
Yeah. The lows gardening department yesterday was really picked through where we are, but, um, you know, grab some cups, grab some dirt and some seeds and get something like that started

spk_1:   9:31
even just doing like Basil. I don't know what you're talking about. You got your notes here. I'm not. I haven't but like you can do, based on the window sill, you could do lots of stuff just even in the window sill for a while, So don't you know? But just seeing something being produced is a good feeling.

spk_0:   9:46
It is.

spk_1:   9:47
I'm about to make a bed for our bed frame for our but yes, I'm gonna feel really good about

spk_0:   9:52
I know

spk_1:   9:52
starting that project

spk_0:   9:53
and we have a conversation. He was like, How high on the priority list Do you feel like a new bed is? And I was like, Well, if it makes you that, what about sir. Answer. You feel good and, like, emotionally stable. It's very high on my list right now,

spk_1:   10:08
So, yeah,

spk_0:   10:09
otherwise, it's like number 85

spk_1:   10:10
because yeah, because we're talking about painting this room. It needs to be painted again. But in order to do that, it's gonna cause chaos for a work day, right? Or two days. And so we're like, Mmm. It really needs to be done. But is it worth it? No, not right now. At this stage,

spk_0:   10:25
it would

spk_1:   10:25
be bad for our marriage. Right. So those kind of things, like, just value evaluate. I mean, like, what? What can I start producing? Um, you know, five gallon bucket, you could grow tomatoes, a five gallon bucket,

spk_0:   10:37
right? And it doesn't have to be, you know, gardening or even baking or cooking or anything like that. Like I know some people are working on quilting projects right now. Some people are doing knitting projects right now. You know anything that you put yourself in the place of being a producer? Um, and that could be, you know, I don't know a lot of small business owners right now who are either they're not allowed to open their doors or something like that. So they're producing content there, like this video, you know, they're just producing information and putting it out to help people so that can production can look a lot of different ways. But if we kind of take a step back, you know the problem is it's not good for any of us just to consume. It's unhealthy. It's not how we're wired. And so and the consumer always feel some level of stress because they're reliant on the producer. So the more you shift into that producer position, the more you haven't increased feeling of independence and self sustainability. And there's a joy, you know, with our blueberries. It is so fun to make blueberry jam, and that's something our older kids have pretty much taken over that area. But their sense of accomplishment enjoy every time they finish a batch of jam is awesome, and then they get to give ah, give a lot of it away. And so you have another layer of joy and just mental well being when you've created something and then you've given it away.

spk_1:   12:06
Yeah, so I think something that were you ready to wrap up your notes here. We're just gonna skip some stuff. It's okay. What else? You

spk_0:   12:15
know, it's good. Was it? Wrap this thing up.

spk_1:   12:17
I don't know what that meant. Okay, so think about what you can produce. I know. We said that several times. Think about what you can produce and start moving in that direction. Even baby steps in that direction. So, like, just going to go back to this bed frame, right? I was thinking about that is where you're talking. I don't know what you just said, but it was like I had to get

spk_0:   12:36
out my life, people. I

spk_1:   12:38
had to get out like a lot of the lumber and look at it, you know. And so it was. It took time, but it's it's in that process, you know? And sometimes I could get frustrated to be like, I don't have this. I thought I had this. So I thought I had this piece or I had actually this extra. I didn't. But it's okay, but I'm moving in that direction, right? So I think just in this time, move in the direction of starting produce things

spk_0:   13:00
right. So is actually Maur important arguably to be in the production process? Yes. Then whatever the result is psychologically Yeah, which I mean for real people like that is really important. Right now. We've got lots of podcasts about how your mental well being and self care is super important. All right. Thank you so much for tuning in with us on Facebook. Live,
