Hello, everybody.
spk_0: 0:01
Hello, everybody in How are you? This beautiful sunshiny whatever it is, where you are struggle with that. Whether it's day night, I don't know when you're listening to this. Anyway, welcome to the show of the big show. The three me Y podcast from beans, bullets, bandages and the Why, of course, is you, uh how was that? Was that swab
spk_1: 0:25
you were born Swath. A
spk_0: 0:27
foreign swab was actually born a boy. I just became suave as I got older.
spk_1: 0:33
Live and learn Business advice.
spk_0: 0:35
Salty. We've gotta get ah, six pointer for you today. We got six points for you. What we're gonna be talking about six points on
spk_1: 0:45
it's a companion to a recent podcast We did on things many preppers overdue. This is things many preppers under do.
spk_0: 0:55
And this is not and I mean, really not an all inclusive list. This is just six things. We may do another one of these or even to who knows how many. Because preppers overturned to do a lot of things and we're preppers. We've underdone a lot of these things and we're guilty as charged on some of these, but not all. Some of these we, in fact overdue. It's always about finding the balance is that that's kind of the hard port trying to figure out where we were. We were discussing the podcast and spice, and I were kind of sitting there disagreeing on one of these, which, you know, we're dragging best. The goats were actually in today. It's pretty good. Uh, people who've never raised goats do not realize how much trouble gut's are.
spk_1: 1:42
Yeah, keeping goats. His livestock is part of your post disaster plans. You need more fencing. You're under doing fencing. We guarantee it.
spk_0: 1:52
Or you need no fencing because partial fencing is not necessary because that won't help.
spk_1: 1:58
They laughed at suggestions
spk_0: 2:00
we had we had when I was a kid in the neighborhood raised goats and he, uh, many. Many was the day I heard plumper clump, clump, clump. Er, my bedroom is. I woke up in the morning and I knew Nuisance, which was a white Nubian goat, was up on my way up on the roof of our house, walking around. I could hear nooses was up there. Pretty soon I knew what would happen. Salty when Mom didn't actually call me salty but salty. Go get nuisance off the roof of our house. You'll never guess why he was named Nuisance. But he was. He was a state champion. Billy Nubian goat, good goat. But me. He wasn't news is man. He had a lot of babies, too, and he he was a successful reproduce and he wasn't nasty and mean like most Billy's could get. But he was ability. So there we are. That's not We're not here to talk about goats. It was just in the side. We always have to do one crazy aside tradition. So let's let's call it the list there and start working.
spk_1: 3:14
Well, I know what the 1st 1 on the list was because it focuses on the U. Now we admit freely. Not all of these. Maybe you. It's possible none of them is you, right? I think there's probably pretty good odds. At least one of them is you, though
spk_0: 3:28
this 1st 1 may well not be you. But then again in May. It's a lot of people. It's not her, but it's me. Ah, and it is fitness.
spk_1: 3:37
The single best thing you can do for your long term survival is keeping body in good shape. Sorry. Tree
spk_0: 3:43
through. And even if you're well, you know I need to lose. You can. You can need to lose a few and still be in decent shape. You say I've seen professional football players going out there. You know, either £350 guys and they're just flying around the field. And trust me, for those of us who've been sidelined photographers at professional football, thes guys really move a lot faster than you think they can.
spk_1: 4:07
They will get your attention. Linda Cummings.
spk_0: 4:08
They are big and they are fast and they are in shape. Even though they're huge, so huge doesn't necessarily mean what it means is do you move? Are you getting up and moving?
spk_1: 4:22
Be honest about it. What are you
spk_0: 4:24
doing That that half hour, 45 minutes? Our A day's worth of moving because that's what it takes.
spk_1: 4:30
If you're hypertensive, it's gonna be awfully hard to control that if you don't have access to good medical care and you're in a stressful situation,
spk_0: 4:37
that's right. And I could tell with my blood pressure if I have not been getting my daily exercise and I, you know I do in a 45 minutes to an hour. A day, five days a week. At least that's my minimum. And I could tell I write my bicycle. All right. Go to the gym. Yeah, they we haven't. No. Excuse thing, though. We have no excuse. They built a beautiful, absolutely wonderful community center, Jim, a block away from our house.
spk_1: 5:09
You'd never expect such a nice gym in such a small town. And it's only a block away.
spk_0: 5:13
Is there's no excuse.
spk_1: 5:15
You know, the whole world is iced over.
spk_0: 5:18
We can still get to get
spk_1: 5:19
to the gym. Yeah,
spk_0: 5:21
so yeah,
spk_1: 5:21
and it's gonna be open because we all have key cards to open it.
spk_0: 5:24
Now it's 24 7 So there we are. And that's a good thing. No, Ma. What do you mean? I have that, But you got to fight some way to get up and moving. You know, Spice has one of those Fitbit things I got for now, she's a She's a exercise fanatic.
spk_1: 5:42
You may surprise yourself, folks. I was a couch potato for more than a decade, but being in the health field, I could not stand the hypocrisy of knowing how critically important to my long term wellbeing exercise was and not getting any. So I did it for several years, Justus. A matter of you got to do it because you're an idiot if you don't. And after several years of that, I actually found some things I liked. And I don't like every bit of it now because I have to wait lift because I'm a small, frail woman and otherwise my bones would fall apart. I don't like that, but there's a lot of things out there to do that are fun and good for you.
spk_0: 6:23
We like to write bikes. Riding bikes is fun riding bicycles, bicycles, not motorcycles. It's funny, just I I can go out and ride on our after work and decompress is me and Lois my blood pressure. It's good for my heart. It keeps my legs strong. You know it's good for it. Keeps gets the blood moving on. Boy, if I don't do it, you can really tell on my blood pressure. And my numbers
spk_1: 6:47
keeps you in touch with your down to
spk_0: 6:49
Yeah, it does. Oh, you want a pro tip? If you want a way to keep track of things in your town and not look suspicious. Ride a bicycle riding around town and just watch and look and people won't in any way. I think that you're any kind of weirdo because you're just out riding your bike. Because this is exercise, right? And nobody pays attention to bicyclists at all. So
spk_1: 7:12
sometimes even driver. So we're bright clothing.
spk_0: 7:14
Yeah. And, uh, even though I'm a big guy and I have a big guy admitted my blood test come back great.
spk_1: 7:22
He also was very sedentary for many years. So just because you don't like anything now, that's not a life sentence, guys.
spk_0: 7:30
Right now, I can't because I have knee issues and I've had any issues for years. I can't be a runner. It's just not happening. Um, and I don't even like walking. I broke. First of all, I don't like walking. I just It just does not is nothing I want to do. So we'll come back to this here in just a minute.
spk_1: 7:50
Yeah, I think now is good. Okay, let's go there.
spk_0: 7:52
All right, let's go there. Number two on the list is find a way to deal with most preppers don't realistically look at their physical limitations and then come up with a plan to deal with them. We have my knees are terrible and her hiking is great and stuff like that. But she's a small woman, and there's only so much you can carry. You know, it's It's a limitation of the fact that not not the cheese. Not that she's not strong for her size. It's just she's a 50 year old £115 woman.
spk_1: 8:33
Yeah, £60 pack is half my body weight. So I noticed that when I walk with that on my back,
spk_0: 8:38
a £60 pack and if we're bugging out, she's carrying a £9 rifle and a a pistol and ammunition and you know it's just not happening. And I don't I don't like to hike or walk flat out, and I sure don't want to do it with a 65 back what I can, but not very far. I'll be honest. I just can't. It's so we don't even plan to try. What we do is we have bicycle set up. I ride a bicycle all damn day long. Not a question about that. I know I can do it because I've done it recently
spk_1: 9:18
and our main secondary spot is the place,
spk_0: 9:21
which is within bicycle distance one day. Yep, be a rough ride. But be
spk_1: 9:28
a
spk_0: 9:28
rough ride, carrying a lot of gear because there's a lot of pills we can do it.
spk_1: 9:34
And it's a nice way to get around the fact that if it's been an earthquake or something, there's bridges down. If it's not big, deep water. If it's the usual little bitty creek that you need a bridge to get over with a car, you get a bike across it. Absolutely. Before did you
spk_0: 9:50
just have to carry it across? You could get it across. Same
spk_1: 9:54
thing for roadblocks that people have set up.
spk_0: 9:56
So assess your level of fitness, start working on it. You know you need to Well, me main. I mean, you may be a runner. You maybe were these fitness. That's great if you are,
spk_1: 10:07
But then you know you need to keep track of keep care of it because you know you're on that train.
spk_0: 10:12
Time to throw in a pro tip here, you know? So I mentioned my numbers. I mentioned my numbers because I go to the doctor and I get my blood test every year. And I go to the doctor and get a check up every year. Okay? And I go to the dentist twice a year and get my teeth cleaned, even though my family has a terrible, terrible dental history, and I've got more fillings in my mouth and and Carter made little pills. That's a dated saying now, but
spk_1: 10:42
yeah, not the president, the one who sold little liver pills.
spk_0: 10:44
Right? But that's critically important that you keep your preventative health care up. And I know a lot of people with this Look, this flag, other than you do not want to have a dental issue in a grid down stuff hits the fan scenario. You really don't.
spk_1: 11:02
And if you're in my group, I don't want you to either, because the fact of the idea of trying to attempt dentistry kind of terrifies me And God be your best bet Come. Disease is dangerous. Yeah, promotes heart attack. And
spk_0: 11:15
yeah, if you're older, Alzheimer's disease problems don't want that. So take care of the chompers and take care of everything else.
spk_1: 11:24
Frankly, a lot of proper foods take a lot of chewing, too. Yeah, so that's that's what the problem.
spk_0: 11:30
Okay, there's two things in the Anna Pro tip bonus. Okay, What else we got?
spk_1: 11:35
Skill development. This one is way under served in the prepper literature because nobody can sell you anything based true for fitness as well. If they can't sell you anything, you don't hear nearly so much about it.
spk_0: 11:48
Yeah, this great new prepper gizmo. They're all over it because, you know,
spk_1: 11:52
you'll buy it and they can Fellatio. They're having right
spk_0: 11:55
there in the story. Have you can use their affiliate thing, and there's nothing wrong with that. We're not doing that. I got no problem with people. I I am a capitalist, okay?
spk_1: 12:07
He's also a beard guy. He's also a gear guy. I think so,
spk_0: 12:11
Yeah. I buy a lot of stuff, but having said that,
spk_1: 12:17
it's not the whole story. Yes, it can't be the whole story. I know some of the skill
spk_0: 12:22
a lot of it's cool. You're not going to go out and plant a garden successfully the first time you try it. It's just not gonna happen. You're not gonna If you don't know how to run a chainsaw. You just don't know if you prep it having a chainsaw around, but you don't run it. You're just gonna end up cutting your leg. You know, you just I mean, neither one of us has really knows how to run a chainsaw,
spk_1: 12:46
having those antibiotics without knowing what to use, when and how much of him So we could be worse than useless.
spk_0: 12:53
We admit we don't know how to run a chainsaw. We've never done it. So what we're gonna do and we haven't set up is we're gonna go meet with a friend and she does firewood all the time, and she's gonna show us how to run a chainsaw safely. That's what we have to do. That's one of the skills were gonna be developing this fall. And people say, Oh, you just know you don't just do this with the chains. I see so many chainsaw access for people doing stupid stuff with a chainsaw drop, even if it's not cutting themselves or dropping limbs on their heads and all kinds of really dumb stuff, we're not gonna do that way or tear up there saw by sawing into the ground or whatever so toe skill development. What skills do you need? What do you know? You need that. You're not doing that. I know. We have a whole list of things that we need. We're gonna have to work on.
spk_1: 13:47
Yeah, And some things have been scratched off that list in the past year. And other things. You're still on that list.
spk_0: 13:54
That's right. A lot of a lot of the stuff of the journal, that list, but a lot of stuff you have to do, like what we're doing today. We're on our way out to the place. In fact, is unskilled labor,
spk_1: 14:06
however, sticks the whole idea of how you take care of the land so it will take care of you long term. I developed my skill and that the whole lot this past year,
spk_0: 14:18
right? And then there's developing this girl. And then there's implementation. Because if you don't actually do it, the skill will rose, you know? And another part. Even things like Oh, yeah, I've got a gun. You've got a gun. Great wounds. Last time he shot it. When's the last time you went out and worked on defensive moves with your God? When's the last time.
spk_1: 14:43
If you conceal carry, do you practice the draw?
spk_0: 14:46
Exactly. And by the way, if you're concealed carrying a practicing your draw, do it with an unloaded gun, please. Thank you. And make sure it's unloaded that mean, really? Make sure it's unloaded like actually make sure it's unloaded and, uh, practices. I've actually thought about even getting a dummy gun, just one that can't shoot for practice. But never have I actually spent the money on it because that's just more stuff we don't need. Worst up. Yeah, so anyway, what's next on the list?
spk_1: 15:21
A short term prepped food.
spk_0: 15:23
This is This is kind of a weird thing. Everybody's Who's a prepper knows what. Ah ah! Bug out bag is okay, everybody, everybody's got that. They got their their bug out bag to get their 72 hour bag, and that's fine. Uh, generally, you don't have a whole lot of really, uh, hard to prepare food. I hope you don't have a lot of hard prepare food knows because you're gonna be on the go if you're using that bag. But the concern becomes once you get past whatever you've got in your little bag, What do you have on hand or that you're carrying with you? That is quick and easy to prepare because that first week in a really emergency, the last thing you're gonna be wanting to d'oh is sit around and prepare food. I'm just not gonna be wanting to do it the hardest. It's gonna be hard enough for you to be preparing your water, making your water safe that you're just not gonna want to do food on top of that. So do you have enough ready to go or easily to prepare food on hand for the first week or even two canned foods? Great. Because it just requires a little bit of heating. Heavy camp food is having So we've got that. We got space coughing or four hit off. She's got She's had the Cupid music. So sorry about all the coughing. She's got the goodies. Also, there's, like the Backpackers pantry, frozen type food. We like the Backpackers pantry, and we keep coming back to using that name because we like not only the taste of the food. The fact that they have vegetarian options because we don't eat store bought me. We're not what you'd call true vegetarians, but we don't eat store bought me. We don't eat commercially. Process me. So, you know, unless we personally shot it or people are, you know, people that we know and trust have shot it, you know, Probably not gonna be on our table. We don't. It's just not the commercial Farming of meat is not our thing, but anyway, pushing right along. We like that brand because they have good vegetarian options. And they do have meat options, too. But they have very small, short ingredient lists. And they're not way overloaded with salt, which is a concern. Proper food tends to be way overloaded with salt,
spk_1: 17:57
but when he says frozen, he means freeze dried
spk_0: 17:59
breach, right? Yeah. Three strands stuck in the freezer. Yeah,
spk_1: 18:02
we're backpacking food. It's like
spk_0: 18:04
I used to carry
spk_1: 18:05
often. Comes in pouches with two servings of so whole pouches. Seven or 800 calories.
spk_0: 18:12
Okay. I'm gonna pause it so she can call her head off, saying I'm just saying, Here we go. We're gonna pause and we're back. You couldn't really tell you that. I was pushed the pause button on the machine, but spices got her lung laying there on her lap because copter longer,
spk_1: 18:27
but two is one. I've got to a need one. The body is built along that principle and most most aspects
spk_0: 18:37
too long. Those two kidneys too. Legs.
spk_1: 18:42
Well, no, that one's kind of not spare, but, you know,
spk_0: 18:46
two hearts beat as one. No, that's a song,
spk_1: 18:49
right? Or left heart. You know you need him. But anyway,
spk_0: 18:53
okay. As a quick aside, I learned this this week because I knew it, but I didn't know it. But I do it like which ventricle of the heart pumps the most blood. I think about that. The answer will come in a bit. Which ventricle of the heart pumps the most blood? You noodle on that. We're gonna come back. Okay, Now, what's what's next on the list?
spk_1: 19:24
Um, Multiple ways to purify water. Yeah. Most preppers have a way to purify water. And that's a good thing,
spk_0: 19:33
anyway, is not enough.
spk_1: 19:34
What you've got is a life straw. I don't think that's good enough, because
spk_0: 19:40
what you've got is three life straws. That's still not good enough. Different methods for different purposes. Because you wanna want you're gonna want to use boiling. We're gonna need a way to boil. You're gonna want to use filtration, See? Need good filtration. You're gonna want to be able to do it for a group of people, not just one person, because you're gonna probably be with other people and them getting sick will slow you down, Justus much is you getting sick?
spk_1: 20:08
Besides, they're human beings, and one guesses you care
spk_0: 20:11
absolutely so multiple ways. And we do. We probably have five ways. Six ways. Yeah, yeah, So just keep in mind, start thinking about your water. How are you gonna filter, filter it? Boil it. Chemically treated.
spk_1: 20:31
Wouldn't mind different kinds of challenges because if you're going hiking or something, something like a life stroke and be a good choice because your main problem are fairly big microorganisms that get caught up in that kind of filter. Well, but if your problem is, the only water source is you've got to come from this nasty, disgusting puddle by the side of a road. Well, it's probably got a whole bunch of toxins in it that are molecules and not cells. And those filters air not gonna take it out. So you're gonna need to do something else about it. If you've got viruses or prions potentially in the water, friends usually not in the water but fire is very army
spk_0: 21:16
can be, especially if you have a situation where there been people been having not good sanitation.
spk_1: 21:24
If you're in a populated area where the sewer system has not been working, you absolutely should be acting as if there are viruses in the water you're drawing because there probably are.
spk_0: 21:37
Here's a free preview of a future podcast on other things that preppers need Thio. D'oh! More propping on generally. And that was one of the sanitation is gonna be on that list. That's a way and reserved. That's quite true. So what else we got on today's list
spk_1: 21:55
Now what else was on today's list could stream Mm
spk_0: 22:02
M o. Okay, um, you can tell we're gonna have to do another brief pause because we have reached a point where we're gonna have to do a little bit of messing around with stuff. So I'm gonna put you on brief pause for a minute, and we'll be back in just a bit about ammo and we're back again. Well, come back um, we're we're ammunition. Yeah. This is the one the spice and I, uh, came to disagree about. I'm an ammunition freak. Okay, keep that in mind. I am not to be trusted when it comes to the amount of ammunition needed Jew crap. So keep that in mind. Having said that, I still think a lot of people need have way, way, way underestimated their needs for ammunition. To the point of if you have, you just need most people need to take a serious look. I hear a lot of people talking about they have their ammunition for their three or four guns story in a as in N as in one m o can. And I'm just like that's not possible because one of those guns it's a 12 gauge and 12 gauge shells take up a lot of space in an AMA walks. So if you have, like 50 50 shells, which is just can't even imagine, that's not even. That's just to take. Your 12 gauge is assigned to you so much. You gotta have at least some of the major things of what is designed to do. You should have slugs. You should have uh, double aught buck. You should have plenty of birdshot, cause that's your hunting grounds. Um, it's just an unimaginably not much in my world to have one am a box full of ammunition. So think about all the roles that 12 gauge plays and then have at least some, and I'm not. You don't have to have, like mad Max levels of of shells. You don't have to have, like, salty levels or show having forbidden. Oh, goodness. No, don't go there. But you should have plenty of shells on hand for what you're trying to do.
spk_1: 24:04
Visualize what you really expect to be doing with that weapon. And for how long.
spk_0: 24:08
Right now, if you have, like like she has. Ah, Glock, I have a block. Okay, we both that means so we need double the amount of ammunition of the personal defensive ammunition, and we need double the amount of rain champion Ishan, and we need double the amount of just having ammunition, ammunition and, you know, just for that one gun, let's say we have 100 rounds of personal defense ammunition and then we have oh, shoot. When we go, the range we got through 100 rounds apiece. 50 to 100 rounds apiece every time we go out, you know. And you have to have some in storage. Two allow you to continue to go to the range or the back garden where you have a shooting area even when there's an ammunition shortage. Because if an ammunition shortage means I can't shoot because I don't have any ammunition, then you don't have enough ammunition. You should never feel like I can't go out and shoot my gun to practice my gun because I don't have the ammunition to spare if you do your stocking too little ammunition. Thank you. You too. Yeah. You caught us where we're having burger kick getting a couple fish sandwiches. Fish genius. Otherwise, Okay, um, fish does not fall under our, um, meet category. I know that sounds a little silly, but there's a reason that's totally not part of this podcast anyway.
spk_1: 25:54
That was it.
spk_0: 25:55
That was it. That's the list.
spk_1: 25:57
That was our list for today. That was our one and six. We got six wanted. Six. We got six. We didn't
spk_0: 26:04
actually start out to say, Hey, let's get six. We didn't start out to say that, but we're like, Okay, how many is that? Women were done. So there are several other things were gonna come back to you, and we're gonna write a companion article to go along with this and hopefully maybe we, uh, spurge er of prepping juice is a little bit Thio fix may be a problem that you might have. I know we have problems and we try to We try to address them and we have lots of problems.
spk_1: 26:36
Some of these air not just prepping issues either. Because if you do take the time and effort to develop skills and be healthier, you it takes a lot more investment of time and energy. Which is why a lot of people don't do it. Probably, but you get benefits with. It's starting from day one and ongoing.
spk_0: 26:55
And here's a Here's a common thing that comes up at the gym because I don't like going to the gym. Who likes going to the gym? Some people,
spk_1: 27:03
some people do, but I'm not one of
spk_0: 27:04
Yeah, you're sitting there, you know? It's like it's 7 30 at night. You've worked all day. Your tire, you don't want to go to the gym. But, you know, you gotta go the gym. So you go and you get on the exercise bike or whatever it is you're doing. And you're just having one of these things were Well, I'm just not really you know, this isn't clicking for me, but you have the one thought. Well, at least I'm not sitting there on the couch, Just rotten away. I'm not just sitting there on the couch getting unhealthier by the second. You know, that's what you're talking about.
spk_1: 27:41
And when the day comes when you need to Oh, suddenly hiked 10 miles up a mountain like I did this summer with a friend. You might not do that for fun, but you might find a need to do that one day. You could do that. And it doesn't feel like it's gonna kill you.
spk_0: 27:59
Yeah, I would. Even after even after all these years. And after all these endless hours I've spent at the gym and I don't like going Oh, I go because I know I have to, because this is a cost of doing business. So
spk_1: 28:17
it beats the alternative of spending the last decades of your life sick and incapable.
spk_0: 28:22
Yes. So or even had not having the last decades of your life. So we're gonna wrap this up and we'll talk to you the next podcast.
spk_1: 28:32
Be, well, spice out.
