Hello, everybody.
spk_0: 0:02
Hello, everybody. And welcome to the show The Big Show, the most in Borden and critically acclaimed podcast that is recorded in our car. It's almost like a song anymore. And today we're in the red studio where we are heading west. West, I say the sun is out. It's a beautiful day and Spice has been out and being healthy all morning long. How healthy she waas!
spk_1: 0:29
I'm healthy. Most mornings today I was healthy at the gym,
spk_0: 0:33
healthy at the Jew. Now we're going to tell you a secret. She's a bit of a gym rat, but she doesn't actually like going to the gym. No, she does it because of her health. And I while nobody in their right mind could consider me a gym rat, normally spend five days a week there, at least in the winter. What about my full days?
spk_1: 1:00
Five full days spread throughout the winter. No, no,
spk_0: 1:06
40 minutes a day, more or less. Some days more. Some days last but not any less than 30 Doing cardio Stop. My preferred way of doing it is on the exercise book, and, uh, we don't We don't do this because we like it.
spk_1: 1:25
I like riding my bike outside. I like kayaking. I like hiking. I like Well, I'm okay with gardening. I
spk_0: 1:33
like riding my bike outside. And you know, another thing that's that's a health thing, is we? She I don't know. I said, we we isn't I purchased the lawnmower and just the word. Well, this is part of the deal, though I had taken care of the long before by having a service to it. Yeah, and she was just like, Well, you know, we could save money and I need the work out anyway. It's like, final bad morning. Yeah, just push forward So we don't we pushy push modes, the place, the paths that we keep clean. To be fair, it's We just keep haves
spk_1: 2:09
and the fire break
spk_0: 2:10
and a firebreak around the cabin, and she pushed. Those are long and at the place we have A except both places. We have four wheel drive mowers, so it's not because there's their sales. Let's not be stupid about this when it's 100 degrees outside push going even with a more that has, um, that helps you out by crawling by itself for £115 5 foot four woman is a workout. That's one way she keeps in shape. Is she pushed most?
spk_1: 2:50
But the gym is strictly health. Need that part's not fun,
spk_0: 2:55
and she still goes to the gym even when it's beautiful weather outside a couple days a week or makes an adequate substitution.
spk_1: 3:05
It is a sad fact of life that thin boned 120 found women who wanna walk upright when they're 80 after lift weights. When the
spk_0: 3:14
50 people don't know that, that's why there's so many crooked little old ladies.
spk_1: 3:19
Yep, osteoporosis would absolutely collapse May if I didn't take care of my bones.
spk_0: 3:26
And she is actually the type that is probably prone to it.
spk_1: 3:30
I know I'm prone to it
spk_0: 3:31
s o, but here's Here's the thing you want to read about osteoporosis. She already has an article on three B y about osteoporosis. In fact, I suggest you read it. It's pretty good. It's one of our earlier article that is still pretty good. We don't like doing what we're doing at the gym, but we go because being indecent health is the most important problem.
spk_1: 4:02
You want to talk about being able to survive difficult situations, you need to be as low in the chronic disease department as possible.
spk_0: 4:11
I am, um, a big guy and I don't have diabetes. I don't want diabetes, So I go to the gym and exercise 40 minutes every day, five days a week. That does a whole lot of good towards keeping me from having diabetes
spk_1: 4:29
and Alzheimer's and heart disease, all kinds of lots of other things.
spk_0: 4:34
In fact, you know, people look at me and I like that I'm not a fit body type, But then they get my blood tests. They kind of Look at me. Look at these blood testing. Look at me. Look at the test site of looking. Do I look like a meat and taters just every day? 50 year old dude. Okay, 55 year old dude and meat. It's, uh I do dictators, but, uh, it's kind of one of those deals. Were I pretty much not exclusively, but pretty much stick to a diabetic diet, not because of a diabetic, because I don't want to become one. You know, there are no sugary pops in my in my life. I will occasionally eat a bowl of frozen yogurt, which I do like, but, you know, there's no there's a recess candy bars in my life. Okay? This is not we don't do this. All that refined sugar stuff. No, I stole too many potatoes, and I still eat too much. It's not really as much as it used to be of refined flour. Mostly I've switched away from refined flour. I just don't eat that much of it anymore because we really don't buy refined flour bread
spk_1: 6:16
unless you hadn't heard that before. The single best way to not get diabetes is too eat as if you had diabetes to start with. And we're taking good care of it, right In a second best way is exercised.
spk_0: 6:30
But I've been really limited in last two and 1/2 months because I got this broken leg. Um, I could do some weightlifting, but frankly, I have a hard enough time walking into the door of the place. You know what I'm saying? When I get home anyway, looks like it looks like it swelled to the size of a pineapple or at least feels that way. I have no interest in going to the gym? No, I originally had planned to start doing some cycling by now and have Honestly, that may happen tomorrow. I made you just to see what happens. We'll see. But with the swelling of stuff. So what I'm doing right now is I'm doing my recouping stuff. I'm doing the rehab stuff that I'm supposed to be doing, even though it hurts, even though it isn't comfortable. I have rehab stuff I have to do, and I am getting up. But I'm probably pressing a little too hard on the walking thing. Um,
spk_1: 7:35
no, you're not pressing pretty hard. Yes, but that's not too hard,
spk_0: 7:42
You know, when it starts to become Oh, my God. Excruciating pain. I back it off a little, you know, But they say I can't really break anything. Um, maybe sort of the color of my foot when I get home. You put it up on the chair. If you saw what that thing looks like, it ate Purdy. It's gotta admit it ain't purty.
spk_1: 8:08
It's not pretty. That's not scared.
spk_0: 8:09
Not purple is not scary, but it looks like the claw of a birth of a buzzard cloth. That's what my foot looks like, and it's angry. But that's because I'm doing what I need to do to get back to where I need to be so I can resume my, uh, fitness and gain back the stuff that I have. No, I've already lost. So
spk_1: 8:36
the hardest part hardest problems in prepper world to deal with in my mind, really. Are the medical problems being very mobility limited? Being dependent on a steady supply of prescription medications or high level medical care is just a nightmare to prep for in many cases, impossible to effectively prepped for size. Did nothing you can do to do that is continue to take care of yourself.
spk_0: 9:11
Exercise is just a great I mean, It's not that we're talking about diabetes type of high blood pressure. OK, it's great for high blood pressure stress relief. It will release you relieve your stress
spk_1: 9:22
reduction of depression. It's actually slightly more effective than prescription medications for reducing depression.
spk_0: 9:29
Now here's Here's one of my things. Now one of the things we talk about in the article this podcast goes with is, you know, when we weigh hit the gym when we can, we find ways we like to exercise and as somebody who now has a bum ankle, but that should get better. But I have bad knees. I have to really watch myself because I enjoy riding a bicycle, but my knees don't so much so it's kind of always a trade office. How hard Aiken go before the new you say Okay, time to take a break. But I had 100 times rather be outside, especially if the weather is good riding around on my bicycle, you know, seeing the trees, watching the squirrels play, you know, whatever. Because I'm kind of Ah, I do put in a lot of miles, but I'm kind of a laid back kind of cyclist. I'm not one of these. Drop my head hammer for 40 like somebody in the car is. Oh, yeah. I was thinking the sky was blue. I think I don't know. I'm not that way. You're kind of that way.
spk_1: 10:50
I enjoy you know something?
spk_0: 10:53
I know that you will know. And this other than that, you'll come back from a for almost one of your cycling tricks winded and oblivious with one thing I know you will know is what direction the wind was one thing I know you will know
spk_1: 11:08
to me. There are there are various, no different days or different things. Some days I'm just out there to enjoy the world, and some days I am limited for time. And I want to take care of myself the way I need to take care of myself. Those days are kind of of pounded. I'm done, but in any case, it's way nicer. Here's here's a perfect
spk_0: 11:29
example of that. We all have multiple bicycles. I have one that I like much more than the rest of them I got to do with that. I'm hoping to get together this spring that I'm hoping that I like, But I've got a I got that. I ordered it in the sense, said some wrong part. So I had, and then I broke my ankle, so I still have to put it together. But long story short, Um, I have one bike. It's kind of more of a long distance type bike. It's the one I would use if I had to bug out. And when I have my my bike, which is sits on the porch, we call our porch bike and that she's got, because we're I'm 63 She's 54 You know we're not gonna be riding the same bicycle and there's a key to bicycles in themselves. And make sure you get one that fits and it's a decent quality. And so and we use where different everything. But so I got my porch, but she's got her porch bike and her porch bike. It's an old, high quality, American made but old bicycle that's really having My porch bike is really heavy, and neither one of these air very easy to paddle. I mean, they're just heavy bikes. They take a lot of effort to run, which is fine, because our we're not just trying to go out there and coast the entire trip. We're out there to get exercise, so we really don't care if they take a lot of effort. In fact, it's kind of preferred, and so shall we have Route's written around town and Route's written, you know, here and there, and each one of these routes are for different things, like I have a route that I take what I want t get my heart rate up and running. I have a route that I take when my knees are hurting, and I want to go just pretty well level as much as I can. We have some pills in town, so it's not. You're always gonna be climbing something. It may only be a block long and 5% but it's gonna be a client. The she has a route that she loves loves. Nobody loves that she uses. When she's pressed for time, she take, gets her heavy bike her porch bike and does her Hillman's holiday.
spk_1: 13:43
Yeah, that's when the weather's too bad to trust. Trust it very far from town, for example, when it's really cold. I don't like to ride far, because if you are stopped by a flat tire or something, you can get yourself into trouble if your hands are too numb to change the stinking tire. So we had a
spk_0: 14:02
tradition of New Year's Day, right, and we tried to put in 20 miles on New Year's Day, and we did it for years until one year we missed because it was like there was no possible way you could ride a bicycle on that stuff. It just yeah, it was impossible to ride a bicycle in that stuff.
spk_1: 14:20
Bicycles on ice are bad. That combination? Yeah, And
spk_0: 14:24
then we live in Missouri, so you never know. We had several. We had that one. You remember that one? You're were so cold.
spk_1: 14:30
Oh, it was dry, but it won't
spk_0: 14:32
work. Hello? It was 10 below with wind gusts 20 to 25 miles an hour. That was brutal. Oh, my way had every piece of clothing on that we owned.
spk_1: 14:43
You don't see a lot of people bicycling and insulated cover alls back alley. I did.
spk_0: 14:48
It wasn't sane, man. We had insulated boots on. It was absolutely That's what we got in our 20. And boy, there was that one year we were in gonna and Kona.
spk_1: 15:00
We brought out travel by
spk_0: 15:01
brother travel bikes which fold up into a suitcase. And so, yeah, we we, uh, strolled along out of the drive. And, yes, that's today with road Ali. We strolled along led drive down through down Count Kona, right past the worst Taco bell in the world. Oh, it That's not a bad Taco Bell.
spk_1: 15:23
And one of the most beautiful shorelines
spk_0: 15:25
weather. If you have a taco bell, if you don't mind, You know, sitting in your car, waiting for three hours to the drive through lane and you think I'm exaggerating? I'm not.
spk_1: 15:37
Not that he's better. Nothing better. But it was a beautiful ride.
spk_0: 15:42
It was a beautiful right. We're not that we didn't go to talk about that day. We wanted to get back before the vacation was over. Yeah, it was a beautiful, gorgeous right. I like going home, But
spk_1: 15:58
a year or two, I substituted skates and, yeah, I skated along the Gulf Coast,
spk_0: 16:04
which, which reminds me we do that a lot. We do that a lot. We have limited room in our car in some of our cars, but it works really well to take one bicycle and a pair of skates and pads and stuff like that because once you train to skate with pads, you don't want to skate without pads because you've trained yourself to fall on the pads and then we know lots of people who busted kneecaps and stuff like that. Who trained for sports. And then, yeah, you do their training
spk_1: 16:38
when you trained to follow differently when you're wear pads and when you don't.
spk_0: 16:42
So anyway, long story short, we take these and we'll be on the Gulf Coast and, uh, especially in the areas we know. You know, why don't you go? And sometimes I have a bicycle. Sometimes I don't, um but it is what it is. She loves escape, and she'll say quads. She'll skate. Ah, Rollerblades. Although she just got rid of him Last set of blades. Not really sure why, but she did. And, uh, hopefully I skate one of these days when we find the right good set of skates.
spk_1: 17:20
Yeah, it's hard to find a good set.
spk_0: 17:23
Were tweeners on ice skating. Anyway, that's the point. Isn't that we do this? The point is, we found a way that works for us that isn't tortuous.
spk_1: 17:34
You make it part of your life because if you want to live a long and healthy life, it's got to be part of your life. It's just a fact of physiology that the bodies were meant to be used and they work better. If you use thumb,
spk_0: 17:48
it could be tennis. It could be golf if you walk it. Golf with carts does not count is exercise. Sorry, guys. Golf with cards is not exercise. Golf with cards is a bad are good walk spoiled by not only the golf put also the car. Golf with cards. It's kind of fun driving her. I drive a cart more than the golfing, but if you ever see me golf cart were more than the golfing. Um, God, I'm really not good. There's tennis. If done correctly, there's even Ping Pong. You ever seen really good Ping Pong players? Go at it. It's the workout.
spk_1: 18:40
There's a whole lot of things one can do. Gardening,
spk_0: 18:44
gardening, cutting firewood.
spk_1: 18:48
Cutting firewood is absolutely a workout. Gardening might be your might not be a workout, but at least moving one way or another. Unless you're just riding around on the on the riding mower. Your
spk_0: 19:01
you know and there's things you can do. Is it just our everyday things? You take the stairs.
spk_1: 19:05
Walking frankly, is good exercise. If you do it briskly and and regularly,
spk_0: 19:11
don't park at the nearest place parked across the parking lot. Take the stairs, little things, but they add up. I say this right now because we got the handicap thing, but that's born it to right now. That's more getting in and out the door with all the rigmarole I've got
spk_1: 19:34
when you can't put actual. Which
spk_0: 19:36
reminds me, my cane got put in the car. Yeah, okay. I'm transitioning over to cane right now.
spk_1: 19:42
We don't have any good way to cover your toes. You don't want to be walking long distances across parking lots in the winter in Missouri. If this is a fact of life,
spk_0: 19:51
yes, truth. But ah, And of course, it's Christmas season right now. What? We're recording this. So it's a easy barking. No, anyway, long story short, it's important, and everybody knows it's important. But, you know, I was just reminded this morning by that look on her face. We have a kind of a new tradition where she hands me her phone, and I know when she hands me her phone that she's going to the gym.
spk_1: 20:30
I need motivational help.
spk_0: 20:32
She needs motivational hope. So I put together. You know how I pick an album for her to listen. Torto together a playlist kind of a little boat. Today I put together a playlist that it was mostly one mostly one band's greatest hits, but not completely. There was a couple other similar genre bands on there. How was that This morning that worked. I told you was different.
spk_1: 20:56
My business taken care of. And I really didn't feel like doing it's morning. But it got done.
spk_0: 21:00
Yeah, I In case you're wondering what? Her Sunday morning playlist? Woz. And this was early Sunday morning. It was several of Deep Purple's biggest hits. Def
spk_1: 21:15
Leppard on there? No.
spk_0: 21:17
Oh, gosh, I wouldn't do that to you.
spk_1: 21:21
I think there was one.
spk_0: 21:23
No, there was not any day
spk_1: 21:24
anyway. No, you weren't. The boat on the water
spk_0: 21:29
was middle of time. What was the folks want to know? His deep purple. I had, uh, you know, some of their early stuff like, uh, uh, space truckin and, uh some. You know, some of them in that early some machine head stuff. And then I went into ah Maur of the later deep purple perfect strangers. Excellent song, uh, that I dropped out and put it in a early recording, even into gonna DeVito by Iron Butterfly. And then I switched into you Some zap shed sums up this morning. Stairway to heaven can't go wrong in the dropped in cashmere from Zach Yeah, I don't remember that way. That's doesn't give you an idea of what we're. What we're talking about here is for us. You know, a typical playlist that's actually one of the more mellow playlist she's You wouldn't think our little spices a crunch head, but our little spices she likes it crunchy,
spk_1: 22:41
especially when lifting weights.
spk_0: 22:44
And when I mean clutch crunchy, I'm talking about disturb stones. So stones, our slip knot, uh, mushroom head Qi Xi. It's pretty hard core on the stuff. So anyway, now you know,
spk_1: 23:03
I should tell my my other minor last story of it, the
spk_0: 23:07
part that showed in there
spk_1: 23:08
Yeah, yeah,
spk_0: 23:09
yeah, she wrote.
spk_1: 23:10
She added, Coast, you think this is just how people are and you are? Which are I was. But I
spk_0: 23:18
don't think
spk_1: 23:19
I was ever really called an athlete until I was 40 year old about that. I spent pretty much my entire twenties decade on the couch, getting basically no exercise at all, except every now and then by accident. Ah, so I've never been I wasn't an athlete. I wasn't a jock. I was active as a kid because, well, we did lots of fun things outside, but I was not sought after by my heist by high school coaches or anything like that. I just never was an athlete. But thing is, I was teaching physiology at the time in my twenties, and it is irrefutably true. If you spend a lot of time in the physiological literature, that exercise is simply the most important health prescription There is basically, and I wasn't doing it and I was teaching everybody how important it was. And I knew what I was telling him. Love's
spk_0: 24:29
true and to be fair, even though the students you have are a lot of them are exorcist, they're coming in, all buff in and you know, they get the sports logo TV's on, they're all buffed and they're all talking about their workouts. And I mean, it's just full bore.
spk_1: 24:45
Yeah, they really want Oh, we don't hear about that stuff because it's right down their alley of interest couldn't stand hypocrisy, and I started doing it just as a chore. I had to do to take care of myself and doing what I consider the bare minimum and leaving it at that for most of a year before I actually started finding some things I enjoy doing and that we made life much nicer. But
spk_0: 25:09
I think when we got you your first real bicycle, that that made a difference. Yeah, we got turned out. We didn't actually end up keeping it that one, because it turned out to not be your favorite bike ever. But it was a professional bike, and it was a good bike. And
spk_1: 25:38
who's gonna go for a walk?
spk_0: 25:44
A woman who absolutely does not know how to park. I can't get out here. Okay? Yeah, it was good bike, but we got rid of it later, but it was a good bike, but that she found biking, biking she loved. And then I long story short. When I was recovering from an injury, I was like a totals out total potato Mean, I was, like, such horrible shape. It wasn't even funny. And I was, uh, able to, you know,
spk_1: 26:15
well, his doctor told him if if he didn't do the PT and lose the way the injury would re occur, and nobody would ever be able to fix it, and he would be permanently lying. Yeah, and motivational. That was motivational, but I'm hardcore about it now because I'm over 50 and I've discovered that if I slack off very much, it's just goes right away. We almost really hard to get back
spk_0: 26:39
in Iraq, and
spk_1: 26:40
we're possibly sit as we sit still here. Yes, these
spk_0: 26:43
people are just idiots. What the heck is that woman doing? Well, Sorry. We're just sitting here in a parking lot, trying not to get it by various different people.
spk_1: 27:04
The point there was that I was not a born athlete, and I've since taken up a very active sport.
spk_0: 27:14
Well, you said you took him, so you know, it was one of your Well, it's been about 10 years ago when you did your time trial. Yeah, um, time trialing on a bike? Yeah, time traveling out bike. And she averaged for a a 30 k 30 k time trial for a woman who's about 45 gripping on me and pain sitting here.
spk_1: 27:42
It's not paying. I'm just
spk_0: 27:45
But she was about 45 at the time. Is she dropped? Ah, 25 mile an hour, 30 k time trial. And if you if you're not a cyclist, that's okay. Whatever. But if you're a cyclist or you've been around cycling all for a 45 year old woman to drop a 25 mile an hour, 30 k time trial. That's pretty good. That's pretty good.
spk_1: 28:12
I turned into an athlete my later years, much to my surprise. So it's not something you're either born into or not born into, and you have to take that and that's it. Change is possible, or I wouldn't be who I am today, and I wouldn't be able to do the things I need to do,
spk_0: 28:31
he said. Do do.
spk_1: 28:32
Okay, Mentor Peaks.
spk_0: 28:34
It's all right, Dr, but
