Show Notes

With the harvesting of all peat suspended in Ireland the horticultural and specifically the ornamental nursery sector are at a crossroad. Peat is such an important resource in the production of perennials, shrubs & trees yet the industry finds that this resource may not be available to them for much longer. This will force them to look at alternative which are been touted as being environmentally friendly. Alternatives such as coir, Baltic peat and others.

But how environmentally friendly are they? Is coir a good option ? As always when looking an any environmental issue a balanced view is essential.  It is best to look at the whole picture when assessing whether peat being used for the production of plants is detrimental to the environment or is in fact a positive.

We look at all these issues in this weeks episode with Matthew Lohan, Woodstock Nursery and Kildare growers group member.
