EP058- All About Bamboo With Peter Stam, Stam's Bamboo Nursery
Show Notes

In this weeks episode I talk to Peter Stam from Stam's Bamboo Nursery all about bamboo's. Bamboo's really are a super garden plant but have suffered with bad press and misinformation over the years. This information stems from people who have had bad experiences with bamboo because the wrong plant has been chosen for a location or they have got either bad or no information at the point of purchase.

Peter tells us that bamboo's are largely grouped into either clumping or running types. Clumping meaning it forms a clump and doesn't send out extensive rhizomes and can be kept to a set width of clump with some light yearly pruning.

Running type bamboo on the other had and send out rhizomes under the surface of the ground. These are the ones which can cause issue if used in the wrong place or when used without the addition of root barrier. Root barrier prevents the bamboo from sending its runners out beyond a set perimeter and so can be kept in a location without any worries at all.

As always it is a case of using the correct plant in the correct location.

There is so much to love about bamboo. Their uses are extensive, they can be used as a ground cover, to screen and area, as an interesting hedge, a beautiful specimen, tall structural plant, beautiful in pots etc.

They are also hardy, grow on most soils, are relatively pest and disease free, last for a long time so really there is so many positives and the only negatives really stem from incorrect plant in a location.

If you have any bamboo queries please contact Stam's bamboo nursery and talk to the experts.
