Colton Cockerell:

Hello and welcome to a another exciting episode of Bridge the Gap where we're balancing life through health, wealth, business and relationships. All right, welcome to the show everyone. My name is Colton Cockerell. And with me, I have my lovely co host as always miss Trisha Stetzel Trisha. Good day. What's up? I'm Australian now.

Trisha Stetzel:

Good day. You're a goofball today. Hey, everybody, Colton, thank you for the lovely introduction from Down Under, I don't know, something like that. Trisha Stetzel, Results Xtreme Business Solutions. Here. We're having a little bit of fun today, I'm really excited about our guest. So this month, as you may remember, we're focused on business success for the whole month of April. And today we're going to be talking about personal and professional development. And who better to talk about this topic than my friend coach. Sean, welcome to the show.

Colton Cockerell:

Thank you for having me. I appreciate it. And Coach John, before we jump in and grill you with our questions, I do have to give a shout out to our sponsor, and that is Results Xtreme Business Solutions with all your business coaching needs. Alright, Coach, Sean, personal development, I think it is something that so many people are like, Oh, that's cool. But a lot of people are either turned off by it because they think it's just like, like ridiculous, or it's just too much time. So I want to first before we jump into all those myths, I want you to just break the barrier by telling everybody what is personal development? And then the follow up question. How important is it for just personal growth?

Shawn Lacagnina:

To good question, Colton, I'll tell you, it amazes me when I hear the things that you just said, right? Because for me, personal development is a way of life. It's really something that it's a matter of taking personal responsibility for where you want to go. And if you if you have that ambition, oh, my mentors, Zig Ziglar. So I grew up on the old Zig Ziglar, Brian Tracy, Stephen Covey, guys, Tom Hopkins, zig used to have a saying that if you're not willing to learn, nobody can help you. But if you're determined to learn, nobody can stop you. That is personal development. And it doesn't matter. You know, we're not just talking business in your life as well. Why do we have hobbies? Why do we do the things that we do? It's to expand what we want to know, to expand our life to expand our thinking. I was having a conversation with a client the other day, who's an expert by all rights in branding, I mean, amazing at what he has done. And he doesn't read other people's stuff, because he doesn't want to be influenced by it. And to me, my thinking is just the opposite. Like, why don't you want to expand your thinking by checking that stuff out? You know, and he was afraid of, but then I might be copying? Well, that's, you know, there's nothing new out there really. It's a matter of reorganizing it, rethinking it, re innovating it to fit with what we're doing today. So for me to answer your question, you know, personal development is taking personal responsibility for what we want to accomplish, to give clarity to our goals, look out into the future, and to figure out what we need to get there. And it just, it brings so much to you, I don't know why anyone wouldn't want to do it.

Colton Cockerell:

And it's so interesting, because, you know, people have been there, people have found the formulas like man, I was dragging, I was doing this, this, this, Hey, this is how I got out of it. This is actually how it turned my life around. And for us to want to do it ourselves. Instead of actually just like, take a shortcut by Hey, let me see what all these people did, and then do what they did after they figured it out. Right. I mean, you save so much time and energy. And I love what you said I wrote it down, taking responsibility for where you're going. I love that. So you kind of answered both my questions within that. Trisha, do you? Do you have anything to add on again, take responsibility for where you're going. I love that just so good.

Trisha Stetzel:

See, this is why I asked Shawn to come on the show Colton.

Shawn Lacagnina:

We can end this right here, man. I'm done. We're done.

Trisha Stetzel:

That's it. Mic drop. All right. So Shawn, we talked about personal development and the things that we take personal responsibility for, right expanding our knowledge, but that feeds into our business development. So can you bridge the gap between personal development and business development? Sure. I

Shawn Lacagnina:

mean, really, you know, I mean, think of when I look back at my 38 Plus Your Business career, when I was starting out to do the things that I can do today took more than just my time investment. It took a financial investment. I had to go either buy a book, I had to buy a videotape, I had to buy a seminar I had to invest to have that training. Today we have YouTube, Tik Tok, LinkedIn. I mean, you can get anything you want to know for almost free, if not free to the internet and amazing tool. And yeah, if you want clarity, then that's what people like Trisha and myself and you Colton, you know, you go to the experts, and you get a little bit more in depth and it really takes things off. But to get a base knowledge and to really kind of figure out the path you want to go, man, it's just right there for you. I mean, think about it. You can learn anything you want off of your smartphone, never in the history of the world that we had so much information at hand so much to utilize. And yet people still would rather play Angry Birds than take 15 minutes to improve themselves. It's just amazing to me.

Colton Cockerell:

And that that is a that is two points first, I believe coach Shawn, everything he learned about business coaching came from tick tock. So he told me, I'm just kidding. But no, so that you hit a big point, that's where I was headed, was what can somebody do someone who has never been introduced to personal development? What can they do to start? What's the first step someone can take? You know,

Shawn Lacagnina:

that's a great question. I don't know that there's a right answer for everyone. It really depends on what you're talking about. When you say personal development, the area that you want, you know, there's there's personal development. So I'm a big sales guy love sales, I think it's a life skill, it's not a business skill. So for me, looking at the people that I talked about Zig Ziglar, Brian Tracy, you know, learning what they said, trying to understand and gain a little bit more knowledge, looking for that gem, there's not a silver bullet. And I think that's where people get off the track and personal development, you know, they want to what's the one thing I can do right now, that's gonna make me a millionaire, you know, it's small steps over any period of time is going to have a compounded effect and make things better, it's not a silver bullet, you know, when I talk to a client, for the firm, hey, there's nothing I'm gonna teach you, that's a silver bullet. So if you're looking like in a week, two weeks or a month, things are gonna revolutionize and be different, you're gonna, it's not going to happen. Just like if you gained 50 pounds over the last year, you're not going to lose it in a week. It goes goes both ways, right? So let's just say in business wise, if your sales are down, you're trying to find a way to spur sales, you can easily look for what's the best book and look at the writings and see what people say about it, and see if that fits in. And that might spur your thought, maybe it's a video on YouTube by a business leader that spurs your imagination. And you can see how some of those concepts might be applied to your business. If that makes sense to you, and you want to do it faster. My advice would be to find a coach in that area, let them know your plans work on it together, they're going to hold you accountable, they're going to help you think through those, they're going to be your advocate, right, you're kind of your confident advisor there that doesn't have skin in the game, per se in your business. So they're going to be very honest, and help you put those tools into place. There's just so many things you can do. You know, it's no different than Colton, if you came in, said, Shawn, I want to now play guitar. Well go get yourself a very inexpensive guitar, get on the internet, learn some chords and see if you really like it before you go invest a ton of money in time and find out you know what this really did for me. I don't think businesses any different, unfortunately, so many people, again, they want that silver bullet. I got to do this today. I got to do this add today. And then when it fails, I get frustrated, irritated, and I want to do anything

Colton Cockerell:

for those that can't see our screen, which does everybody. Coach Shawn, I think has about five guitars. mandolin. I see. Yeah, there you had everything back there. So so great metaphor.

Trisha Stetzel:

And there's also a book shelf a full of books behind coach Shawn. So my question for you is how do we not get overwhelmed with all of the information that is out there? I heard you say pick something and go with it. But if I pick something, there's like 10,000 ways for me to absorb that information. So what would you suggest coach Shawn as far as not getting overwhelmed with the information that's out there?

Shawn Lacagnina:

Again, I would start slow. You know, don't try and do everything at once. For me, I'm as you can tell, I'm a book guy, right? I love books. I love the concept of reading. I love the pauses it gives me to think through things. I love to take notes, you know, I'll be reading something go, I can apply that here. I could, I could express this to someone else. And I'll make a note in that book on a pad that I have with me. Some people are audio they don't want to read well, audio books, man, they've taken over everything right now it's so easy to download an audio book, Zig Ziglar used to call your car, your mobile University, right that you could get a PhD in your car just going to and from work, slap something in your car, put your iPad, your iPod, your iPhone, however you consume, you know that that information, this podcast, and you're listening to that information. And it's again, it's expanding your thinking. And that's really the goal of everything. It's it's fueling your passion, because you're probably looking into something you're passionate about. So it's going to fuel that passion. It's going to expand your your thinking in that area. You know, yeah, like for me in sales, 38 years, there's not a whole lot of new stuff that I can find. But I get something that oh, man, I used to do that. Why did I quit? You know, think about going to seminars, and we've all been to seminars, we've written down a million notes, we're gonna apply all this stuff, we go home, and we don't do any of it. So if we learn something against like, Yeah, I heard that 10 years ago. Why didn't I do it? So that repetition helps as well. And I think again, it'll help even clarify your goals. So as you're as you're learning more about this subject matter that you're interested in, it's clarifying what it is that you wanted to goal to attend anyway. What is that aspiration? Well, as you're reading about it okay thought I wanted to go this direction, after I'm considering what these authors are saying, or the videos telling me or the friends I'm talking to, I think maybe maybe this ways a little bit better. So it can save you a lot of time, effort, money, just in clarifying those aspirations. And for me, the most important thing it does is it focuses you, and I'm a huge guy, I'm focused in mindset. And I strongly believe that wherever you focus, your energy is going to flow and Trisha, I know you've heard me say that 1000 times. But that's so believe it, where you focus, your energy is going to flow. So if you're focusing on the self improvement area that you're looking at, or the business development area that you're looking at, it can't help but do better just because your energy is there, your energy is going to flow into that if you do a concentrated effort and really focus on something. I mean, what can you accomplish?

Colton Cockerell:

There's really no excuse, like he said, anyone can put a tape or listen to a YouTube video in your car. It's just that easy. Just what you do it.

Shawn Lacagnina:

I mean, look how podcasts have exploded. I mean, it wasn't, what 234 years ago, where there was a handful. I mean, we're not talking like this medium has been around for our lifetimes, this is a fairly brand new medium, and it is exploding. There's not a podcast for free, that you can't find to learn something about a subject that you're interested in printable resources. Again, I don't think there's ever been a time in our lives where the information is so readily accessible. To ignore it. It's just it is laziness. I mean, it's just a lack of want to, again, it goes back to Zig Ziglar, 40 years ago, 50 years ago, you know, if you're not willing to learn, nobody can help you. But if you're determined, and that's a key word, if you're determined to learn. There's nobody that can stalk you, especially today. Yeah,

Colton Cockerell:

yeah, I just I, Jim Rohn was the big one that I would listen to. And I went through a lot of his stuff and getting I just incredible. I mean, he also passed away, but, you know, incredible guy, great information. I mean, I learned a lot of stuff from a very young age, about sales, about business in the right mindset from just people like that. I mean, so I completely understand what you're saying. It really changes your your viewpoint on things and the way that you respond. And, and Trisha did a great job last week with her succession mindset. And again, all this just pours into each other and all comes back around to what you're feeding your mind, and how you're reacting to your thoughts. I mean, I just, it's great. I love that we're doing this for the whole month, and it's just so much good information.

Shawn Lacagnina:

And really, personal development starts with your mindset, right? You have to be determined to do it. You have to make a personal decision. This is important. I'm going to do this. Again. It's that focus. And if you make that mindset change that I'm going to do this, then then yeah, but if it's a, okay, I'll get around to it or then it's probably not going to happen. There's always something else to do, right.

Colton Cockerell:

That's okay.

Trisha Stetzel:

Go ahead. Sorry. And that focus is so important, as we've been talking about. So Shawn, would you share like your routine for your personal development is that I hear both of you saying, you get in your car, don't listen to slop on the radio, right? Put in a podcast put in something where you're learning something new. But what if you're not driving? What if I'm stuck at home behind the Zoom screen all day long. And by the time I get off the computer, I just don't want to write it. Again. It's about the mindset. But what's your routine, Sean and maybe a tip that people could pick up on some kind of routine where they're doing professional development?

Shawn Lacagnina:

Absolutely, I believe that, well, I don't think you'll find any successful person and you can pick them, right? That doesn't have a morning routine, and an evening routine. The day may be chaos, depending on who you're looking at. But I promise you, if you really look at what they're doing, they've got a morning routine that kicks their day off, and they've got an evening routine that winds it down. And they hold to it as as fast as it can be. For me personally, you know, I get it fairly early. And I do some reading. I've just recently learned about meditation recently been in the last couple months. I'm attempting that it's only a 10 minute to 15 minute gig for me in the morning. But it does bring you a resolve and a peace and a it is a incredible mental exercise to start your day with. So I do that and then I'm reading something for probably about 30 minutes at least. And then in the evening that varies a little bit but before I call it a night, and that that time can flip depending on what I'm doing with my family. I'm reading catching up on some things before I hit the bed. I average four to five books a month. So I'm always reading something and one of my goals for 2022 is to mix it up when I looked last year. The vast majority what I did was business books. This year I'm trying to add in outside reading outside of that. So two business books, one something off topic, maybe even a fiction book. But again, it's just that concept of exercising your brain that does it for you. Right? So first thing in the morning to get you prepped and ready to go for the day. And then in the evening at whines you down and prepares you for hopefully a good night's sleep. And thinking through the other things that you want to do. It's a it's a kind of bookends to your day for me personally, has worked really well. Lunchtime. You know, I've Yeah, I'm probably caught reading something, you know, during that downtime. If I'm not interacting with a client or, or something to do with business, then I'll probably be reading you know, something in that way. Does that answer your question?

Colton Cockerell:

No. Yeah, it consult your around again, if you created those habits, you formed them. But that is right there at that's right at or at our mark. So Coach, Shawn, that's perfect. The last thing I want to throw out there, and I really encourage people to see this. Melbourne, I think it's Mel Robbins, the five second rule. And when you're when it comes to mindset, if you're going to make a decision, if you don't make it within the first five seconds, you're going to go ahead and not do it. And I think that's just so fascinating. So Coach, thank you so much for being on today. So guys, that is the podcast for today. Make sure you check out the show notes because coach Shawns's information will be in there and make sure you tune in next week for another exciting episode of Bridges the Gap.
