Hello, everybody. How is everyone doing? Yes. Good morning. For those of you don't know, my name is uh Luke Nickel. I'm married to the wonderful Lindsay Nickel. Uh and I think we have two pictures. Can oh yes, amazing. Okay, so uh this is me and my little family. Uh that on the far left is Mavis. Uh she's she's a delight, and that's her attacking her birthday cookie from this last year. And then on the right, you can see Lindsay and Gus, that is our other dog, they share a birthday. And so Lindsay said for her birthday that she wanted a picture of her and Gus in birthday hats. Fellas, my only free tip for you this morning is if your wife says something, remember it. Um anyway, and so that's a picture of Lindsay and Gus on their shared birthday. Uh and the crazy thing is, uh, Lindsay and I, we have a bunch of crazy stories about our dogs. Um, I'm sure a handful of you know them. They jumped off a roof recently together. It was a collaborate, collaborative effort, but I'm not gonna tell about that right now. But uh recently, Lindsay just got a new job, and her new job is fully in person. And uh her previous jobs had been, you know, she got to work from home two, three days a week and whatnot, or it'd be fully from home and stuff. And so as Lindsay and I were talking about, you know, this big change of her going in, you know, every Monday through Friday, nine to five, I was like, Lindsay, I'm worried, you know, like we're gonna see each other a lot less. It could be really hard on our marriage, you know, whatever. And Lindsay's like, I'm just worried about the dogs. Um so anyway, that is just a small glimpse uh into Lindsay and I in our house. And yeah, we actually have an extra single bed next to our bed so the dogs can sleep on that one. Um, but uh that's Lindsay and her job and my family. I work for an organization called Young Life. Uh yes, woo, yes. Um yes. Uh we talk about it here sometimes at Sunday at Lakewood Vineyard. Um, but what Young Life is, is we introduce adolescents to Jesus Christ and help them grow in their faith. And so my job specifically is to do that in Lakewood. And I truly believe that I worked the best job in the whole world. Um, I'm sure your job's great. It's not as good as my job. Um anyway, uh, these last couple weeks, we've been going through the book of Acts here at Lakewood Vineyard. And if you were here last week, Tom Wadsworth uh spoke on Acts 2. And one of the things that I wrote down that Tom said was being a disciple is not just learning, it is living. And what I love about that, and what I love about my job, is I get to watch students open the Bible for the first time in their entire life. Uh there were and you you know, people say that, they're like, Yeah, I don't believe you. I legit one time had a kid ask me what is a Bible study? What does that mean? You know, like he literally had zero experience ever reading the Bible, he just did not know. Uh and what I love about my job is I get to watch kids who learn about who Jesus is and what it looks like to follow him, and then they get to I get to watch them live it as well. Uh and watching that change, that is one of my favorite parts of my job. But today we're gonna continue on in that um mindset uh with our series in the book of Acts. But I wanted to share a quote on the book of Acts for uh my friend Dave Purvis once said about the book of Acts. And fun fact, I've told him, I've quoted him on this twice now, and he has no recollection of ever saying it. But I remember very specifically, and I wrote it down after he said it. Dave Purvis said, The book of Acts is the disciples trying to figure out how to follow Jesus. Now that Jesus has gone back to heaven, and now that they have the Holy Spirit, which is honestly just what we are trying to do today. See if you didn't know, the book of Acts takes place after Jesus' life, uh, after his death on a cross, after his resurrection, and after he returns to heaven. But before Jesus returns to heaven, he tells his disciples that they have been given an incredible mission to be his witness. And before they do, they need something and they need someone. And what the thing they need is the Holy Spirit. And Jesus tells them to wait where they are until they receive the Holy Spirit, and then Pentecost comes, and the Holy Spirit comes upon them, and their lives and the lives of thousands around them are changed. And this is what we've talked about the last couple weeks here at Lakewood Vineyard. And we see this in the book of Acts is that disciples now have the Holy Spirit, and they're trying to figure out how to live that Jesus has now gone back up into heaven. And the crazy thing is, is that is the same spot that we are in. That I'm in, that Dave Purvis and the Matt Scheller, the people in this room that we are in today, we are trying to figure out how to live now that Jesus is gone and now that we have the Holy Spirit. And today we're gonna specifically look at uh Peter, who is one of Jesus' 12 disciples. Uh he learned under Jesus really closely for three years. Uh and we're gonna look at Peter as he tries to do this to live life now that Jesus is gone and with the Holy Spirit. And so now uh it is your turn to start talking, and my turn to talk a little bit less. What are things that you just know about Peter? Say it again, whoever said that. Yes, his name means rock. Yes, what else do we know about Peter? Things that he does. He's a fisherman, yes, what else? He likes to talk, yes. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. He talks and then he's like, wait, maybe not, you know, like yeah, yeah. He gets ahead of himself a little bit, yeah? Healed people's juice's name, Costa, yes. That's exactly what we're talking about today. Um, what else? Anything else? He cut a guy's ear off. I knew someone would say that. What else? He denied Jesus three times. We're also gonna talk about that. Yes, yes, he has a brother. Anything else? He walked on water, yes. Anything else? Denied Jesus three times. This is okay, Dave. You're the first person to say it. No one tell him. All right, anyway. Um, yes, Peter was a fisherman, probably that was funny. Nice job. All right, anyway. Jesus was a fisherman, probably low, uh, probably a low middle class job. He worked long nights. He was probably soaking wet all the time, hauling these huge nets of fish. Uh, I grew up going on vacations, uh, fishing with my dad and my brothers and my uh grandfather. This is not that. It's not a fun week in Canada, you know, you're sitting on the boat, hanging out with your brothers, whatever. No, like this is really hard work. And so that's a little bit about who Peter is. And uh kind of diving in, just remember that that is the person that we're talking about when you think and as we uh read today, but to kind of catch us up to a little bit, uh in Acts 3, we see that Peter and John they're going into the temple to pray. Peter and John are two of Jesus' disciples. Uh, and as they're walking in, they see a lame man at the gate who was unable to walk. Okay, really quickly. Just a really funny story that is totally real. Um, there's a certain high school student one time, and we were reading Acts 3 uh at Camp Painters, which is our Bible study that we have for high school students in my basement on Monday nights at 7 o'clock. If you're a high school student, you're more than welcome to be there. Um and we're talking about this, and the student pulls me aside and he's like, Coach, why do they keep why is the Bible roasting this dude? And uh he did not understand the fact that lame meant that he was unable to walk and not that he was uncool. Um but anyway, uh uh back to the story. Peter and John, uh, two of Jesus' disciples, they're walking into the temple to pray, and they see a lame man who is unable to walk. And the Bible tells us that this man sat at this outside the temple gate every day. Every day his friends brought him to the temple gate, and he was there asking for money every single day. And the man looks to Peter and John as they're walking in and he asks them for money. And the Bible says in Acts 3, Peter looked at them so intently, Peter looked at him so intently, and he says, This silver or gold, I do not have, but what I do have, I give you in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk. Cosa, that's what you said moments ago. Peter helps him up, and the man begins to walk. The man jumps around, praising God, and everyone around them is filled with awe. And then Peter and John begin to speak to all the people around them. And this starts to draw in a bunch of attention, right? As Peter and John have helped this man in the name of Jesus walk for the first time in his life, and he's excited, and he's so ecstatic, and everyone is just in amazement of what has just happened. This man has never been able to walk his whole life. And so that is where we're gonna jump into today, starting in Acts 4. But before we do, let me pray. God, thank you for this morning. Thank you for the beautiful day. Thank you that we get to gather together, Lord. I pray that we would walk out of this building different than the way that we walked in. God, when you could would you continue to draw us to you? Would your Holy Spirit move in our hearts and in our lives? Would we be different, Lord? We love you a lot. Amen. Um, if you would turn with me, we're gonna open to Acts 4, um, starting in verse 1, and maybe it'll be on the screen. Amazing. All right, I'm gonna read this, it's kind of a lot. Um, so yeah. The priests and the captain of the temple guard and the Sadducees came up to Peter and John while they were speaking to the people. They were greatly disturbed, because the apostles were teaching the people, proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection of the dead. They ceased Peter and John, and because it was evening, they put them in jail until the next day. But many who heard the message believed. So the number of men who believed grew to about five thousand. The next day the rulers and the rulers, the elders, and the teachers of the law met in Jerusalem. Anas, the high priest, was there, and so were Caiaphas, John, Alexander, and others of the high priest's family. They had Peter and John brought before them and began to question them By what power or what name did you do this? Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, Rulers and elders of the people, if we are being called to account today for an act of kindness shown to a man who was lame and are being asked how he was healed, then know this you and all the people of Israel, it is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed. Jesus is the stone you builders rejected, which is become the cornerstone. Salvation is found and no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved. When they saw the courage of Peter and John, they realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men. They were astonished and took note that these men had been with Jesus. But since they could see the man who had been healed standing there with them, there was nothing they could say. So they ordered them to withdraw from the Sanhedrin and then conferred together. What are we going to do with these men? They asked. Everyone living in Jerusalem knows they have performed a notable sign, and we cannot deny it. But to stop this from spreading any further among the people, we must warn them to speak no longer to anyone in this name. Then they called them in again and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. But Peter and John replied, Which is right in God's eyes, to listen to you or to him? You be the judges. As for us, we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard. After further threats, they let them go. They could not decide how to punish them because all the people were praising God for what had happened. For the man who was miraculously healed was over forty years old. Okay, I'm sure you're like, hey, who are some of these people? What are these titles of these people that I'm reading? So let's just define some of these really quickly. Uh yes, amazing. Okay, the first one, the captain of the temple guard. He's like the head of security for the temple. Uh, and he works really closely with the high priests, and they like try to keep order in the temple. And then the Sadducees are um an easy way to think about it, is like a really powerful and political Jewish group. Um, and then the high priest slash priest, it's a the people that work and run and operate the Jewish temple. And the high priest is usually passed down through the family. And so Anas, he's the high priest, and the rest of his family is also listed as well there. And then uh the Sanhedrin was the highest Jewish ruling council of the time. Think kind of like a supreme court or religious council. And so these are like, you know, these really high-up, educated uh men that are supposed to like have lots of power and control. And so as we dive in, these are the people that are upset with John and Peter for proclaiming the news of Jesus and his resurrection. This upset these Jewish political leaders because they were the they were the people that had like the power back then. And they probably spent a lot of their lives to try and control and maintain having these titles. Um and they wanted to crucify Jesus, and they are the people that did crucify Jesus because Jesus was claiming that he had divine authority. And as well as if you look through the life of Jesus in the Bible, you will see multiple times that these are the men that Jesus is uh going back and forth with, and uh Jesus is challenging them and he's calling them out for their own hypocrisy. Uh and the crazy thing is so I've read Acts 94 a lot, it's actually one of my favorite parts of the Bible. And uh these are like the exact same men that crucified Jesus. Like it's not like just like the same group. Uh Anas and Caiaphas, you can go and turn to John 18, and they're literally listed there as the men that were questioning Jesus in the middle of his crucifixion. Um, which I've like read this so many times, and it just like clicked in my brain uh when I was uh preparing this, is like these are the exact same men. Uh and as we look into verse 2, it says the priests, the captain of the temple guard, and the Sadducees were all greatly disturbed because Peter and John are proclaiming Jesus. And I'm sure as they heard this, they're thinking, because this takes place 50 days, roughly, give or take, after Jesus' death on the cross and his resurrection. Roughly 50 days. And I'm sure when they crucified Jesus and put him on a cross, they were like, it's done, it's over, we took care of it. Right? But here they are 50 days later, and here that Peter and John are proclaiming the news of Jesus. And they didn't even know what to do at first, and they're so upset and they're frustrated with Peter and John that they just throw them in jail for the night. They're just like, they're they're like, we're gonna address this tomorrow, and they just throw them in jail. And the great thing about this is that did not stop God from moving among the people. Verse 4 says, But many who heard the message believed. So the number of men who believed grew to about 5,000. Their number grew to 5,000. If you were here last week, Tom talked about how, in just a few handful of verses before this, their number grew to 3,000. And how incredible that must have been to be a part of the first initial, oh my gosh, we there's 3,000 people a part of this. And then a few days later, another 2,000, also on top of that. Just to be a part of the movement of God and these people. Can you imagine what that would have felt like? To be a part of all these new people coming to the Lord and experiencing God in a new and real way. And I think it's funny because maybe funny is a bad word, actually, now that I just read that. Anyway, because I think we like our little small groups of people. I think it's really easy to know our five or ten people that we really like and we really love and cherish. And that is that's great. I'm so glad. But something that really is hard in my job as I work for Young Life is when I hear high school kids say something along the lines of, it's not the same now that the new people are there. I miss when the original crew was there. We should be so excited about the fact that when new people come and get to experience God for the first time. Um when someone gets to experience and learn and understand faith for the first time, that should be such an exciting thing. Uh and when new people come, like we should be loving them and accepting them and uh welcoming them into this building. Uh, one person that's actually really good at this is my wife Lindsay. Uh, on a handful of occasions, she has gone out and sought new people because she wants to make them feel loved and cared for. And here at Lakewood Vineyard, we love the community here, and we love that we get to know everybody's name, but we want to see new people added to this church. Imagine what it would be like if our problem was that we could not all fit in this room. What an awesome problem that would be to have. Anyway, we'll continue on in the verses in verse six. Do we have it? Yeah, amazing, thank you. Anash the high priest was there, and so were Caiaphas, John, Alexander, and others of the high priest family. They had Peter and John brought before them and began to question them by what power or what name did you do this? Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, Rulers and elders of the people. Okay, so just to maybe put this in your brain or what this might feel like for them, um, so they're brought before all these really high and educated men and these people of power and control, all these religious leaders, the head honchos, the top dogs, however you want to think about it. I don't know if you've ever been a part of an interview, right? Where you like come in, you sit down, and there's like 10 people on the other side of the interview from you. You know, that can be a little intimidating, right? For Peter and John, there's I looked it up and it's roughly either up to it's a minimum of 30 people all the way up to 70. Okay, and it's just these two dudes, you know. And they're like, imagine that like I'm sure they were probably pretty scared and worried, like, you know, what's gonna happen and whatnot. But what it says is Peter filled with the Holy Spirit. As followers of Jesus, we believe that God lives in us, that his spirit, his Holy Spirit lives in us. And the way Peter spoke about it, and the way that Peter spoke, it was so evident that he was filled with the Holy Spirit, that God was moving inside him. Uh high school kids, they use this word aura a lot. That is pretty funny. Um, and uh, I'm sure that Peter had some type of aura, right? Or uh in church, we talk about that they were leaking or they were flowing with the Holy Spirit. And at this moment, I think they're pointing to the fact that God was using Peter to speak to the people right there. That Peter had the courage and the boldness to say these things before the religious leaders, that the Holy Spirit gave Peter what he needed to say. And maybe there's someone in your life, or maybe a time or a circumstance, that you can point to someone and you were like, the way they talked or the way they handled that situation, it could not have happened unless they were filled with the Holy Spirit. Um I just want you to think about that person and hold on to that. We're gonna come back to that in a little bit later. And then in verses 9, 10, 11, and 12, it says, If we are being called to account today for an act of kindness shown to a man who is lame, and are being asked how he was healed, then know this you and all the people of Israel, it is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you. Healed. Wow, that was tough. Anyway, Jesus is the stone you builders rejected, which has become the cornerstone. Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved. Um First, I think calling a man who couldn't walk since birth and healing him an act of kindness, mild understatement. Uh but Peter calls out these religious leaders because they are the ones that took part in crucifying an innocent Jesus, and that it is by this power, the power of Jesus, that this man is healed. Man, I'm sure their blood was boiling. You know? I'm sure they were like, We thought we had taken care of this. This should be over. And here Peter is, and I don't know if he's pointing in their face or not, but man, I love to imagine Peter's being like, and it is oh yeah, it's so awesome. Continuing, Peter describes Jesus as a cornerstone. And so back in the day, when you were building a building or a wall or whatever, they would take, you know, rocks and assemble some type of wall or building. And they would reject any of the odd-shaped ones and they would say save those rocks for later for weird spots. But the rock that they used to be the foundation, uh, to be the foundation for this huge project would be the corners, the cornerstone. And this one uh would have to be, it would have to be perfect, it would have to be strong uh to be able to help build the rest of it around. And that is what Peter is referring to as to for referring to Jesus as. That Jesus is the rock that guides the workers in the rest of the course. That Jesus is the most solid, the largest, and most carefully constructed rock. And the thing is that this comes from another part in the Bible, Psalm 118. I think Peter learned this through living with Jesus, through walking alongside with Jesus for three years. And then continuing on in verse 12, it says, Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved. Salvation is found in no one else. You cannot save yourself. Your actions cannot save you. It is only your trust in Jesus that can save you. And we believe that Jesus is the only way, and that is what Peter is saying right now. And remember, once again, who Peter is saying this to. He is saying all of this to these very men that crucified Jesus, who threw him in pr in prison the night before. You know, I'm sure it would have been a lot easier for Peter to just have um complied and just done whatever they wanted him to do. It would have been really easy for Peter to just roll over and be like, Yeah, I don't really want to be in prison again. I don't really want to be threatened. Uh, it'd be really easy to roll over. Instead, Peter comes right at them and he tells them the truth, which is probably harder in a lot of times. It's not easy, right? It can be intimidating and scary, but Peter does it because he has the Holy Spirit, the courage, and the boldness. Uh, and then continue on in verse 13. Like I've said multiple times, they lived with Jesus for three years. They literally walked everywhere with him. They walked everywhere they went, they walked side by side, they followed Jesus everywhere they went. And I am sure that Peter and John would not have been able to do these things without following Jesus around for three years and without the Holy Spirit. They are not the simple men that they were before Jesus. They are different from the people around them, and they can tell. They stick out by the way they live their life, by the choices they make. They have the boldness and the courage to stand up to these the Sanhedrin, the Sadducees, the Temple Guard. And I love to think about the moment that it clicked for the Sanhedrin. Because I'm sure they're watching Peter and John, and you know, as these men that probably thought themselves better than Peter and John. They were like, you know, we are the ones with control and power. We know things, right? That's probably how that they thought. And they watch as Peter and John talk with this boldness and this courage, and they're thinking, why are they acting like this? How do they talk like this? How can these lowly fishermen talk in such a way? And then they remember. They remember that these men had been with Jesus. And the thing is, is Peter and John probably watched time and time again as Jesus called out these exact same men. You know, as we look at Jesus' life, he him and the Pharisees and the Sadducees, they go back and forth at it. And Peter and John learn from Jesus how to do this. Their lives were changed for the better, and they never looked the same. Do you have people in your life like this? People that you can look in the way in the way they live, the choices they make, the way they act, the way they talk, that you can just know that they have been with Jesus. Or maybe from earlier, remember, I told you to remember those people, or people that you knew were filled with the Holy Spirit. Um that fell in my Bible. Uh here are a couple of people in my life that might be, as I talk about them, that might click uh something in your brain for you. Uh the first one, person I want to talk about, I'm just gonna set this down. The first person is Dave Purvis. Um every time I pray with Dave Purvis, Dave prays like he knows God intimately. And the way that Dave pre Dave prays feels different to me. Um Dave, I can't look at you. Anyway, um, and I'm gonna even double down on this. Because one time I met a woman and I was like, oh yeah, I help out with Liquid Young Life. And she goes, Oh, do you know Dave Purvis? And I'm like, I do, Dave leads young life with me. And this is what this woman said to me. The way he prays, I want to experience what he's experiencing. Another person, my mom, Martha Nickel. Mom, I can't look at you either. Um, my mom wakes up at 5 a.m. every day. My brothers can attest to this. She wakes up at every day, reads her Bible, and prays for us. Mostly because we make stupid choices at times uh throughout our lives. Um, but every morning, that's how my mom chooses to spend her morning. Um, I looked at her, dang it. Oh. Um, my mom has clearly been with Jesus every morning. And you can see it in the rest of her day because that's how she starts her day. And lastly, there's two people. Uh and they're it's uh Missy Garcher, she's one of my supervisors in Young Life, and the other one is Tom Wadsworth. Both of them, in the way that they speak about the awe and wonder of God and the amazement of who God is, you can tell that they had been with Jesus. A really smart guy named Sean Michael Murphy once told me to learn from the people that do things best, to go and ask them questions and write down their answers to those questions. And that's how you should learn to do the things you want to do best. It'll change your life. My encouragement to you is whoever those people are that come to your brain when you think about those people, you should ask those people questions. Ask them about their life, their experiences, because you'll learn a lot. And also they will feel honored and privileged to know that you think and have felt that way about them. The section of verses ends, and the Sanhedrin don't even know what to do with Peter and John. They contemplate completely denying the whole thing and just covering it up. And then they try threatening and punishing Peter and John, and they even threaten them to be silent. And their response to that is we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard, that they would rather listen to God than to these men. As we looked at Peter, who started out as a fisherman, an ordinary and unschooled, but that is not who Peter was. Peter was courageous. His life had been totally flipped upside down after living life with Jesus, and he was standing before all these religious leaders and calling them out to the point that they had realized that Peter had been with Jesus and they realized they'd been fit that he was filled with the Holy Spirit. And the Holy Spirit shows up. The Holy Spirit shows up when they heal a layman. The Holy Spirit shows up when Peter confronts the Sanhedrin. The Holy Spirit was with them the whole time. And my question is do you think Peter thought that was gonna happen? Do you think Peter knew where following Jesus would lead him? Do you think this is where he thought he would go? Do you think Peter thought this is who he'd become? I'm gonna invite the band up now. And uh a question that I want to leave you with is who do you want to become in five, ten, fifteen, twenty years? Because if you spend the time with Jesus, it'll change your life. And he will flip it upside down. And if you're like, how? How will the spirit change my life? How will he flip it upside down? There is power in the Holy Spirit, and there is power in Jesus' name. And I'm not saying you're gonna get a Lamborghini in a house by the ocean. But will you what you will get is so much more than that. And as we saw in this passage, Peter is bold and he is courageous and he listens to the Holy Spirit as it guides him. And the crazy part is Peter denied Jesus three times after Jesus had gotten arrested and was eventually to be crucified. Jesus had told Peter, he's like, Peter, you are going to deny me three times. And Peter, you know, was like, dude, no, I'm not gonna do that. I'm not gonna deny you three times. And then three times after Jesus arrested, people come up to Peter and they're like, Aren't you the guy that was with Jesus? And three times Peter says no. Because Peter was probably scared of the Sanhedrin, of what they might do if they catch him as the man that was associated with Jesus. But here he is calling out those men to their face in front of them, right in front of those same men. Uh Peter showed uh the Holy Spirit shows up, and Peter is telling them they are the very men who crucified Jesus. The Holy Spirit will guide you and lead you and show you how to live. You have to allow him to, and you have to listen. And if you've been following Jesus for a long time, or this is your first time hearing about him, I want you to know that he is a person you can trust your life with. You just have to let him. You you have that you have that if you pray and ask God, Lord, would you take my life? Would you use it and change it and allow me to become the person you are calling me to be? And if you're sitting here and you're like, you know what, that sounds great. I think I'm gonna try that out next week. Or, you know what, that sounds really cool. This is a really busy season for me. Uh, I think, you know, once this summer's over, then you know, that'd be a great time for me to really, you know, amp up my faith. I would encourage you to start today. There's this uh really silly saying on social media right now. Um, and I actually love it. Uh, but it's one day or day one. Are you gonna start today? Are you gonna allow your life to change? Are you gonna allow Jesus to change your life, to change you? Are you gonna allow the Holy Spirit to fill your life? One day or day one. We're gonna take just a few moments here to sit in silence and reflect and reflect on the fact that the Holy Spirit lives in us and there is power and courage that we can have. And as well as this is your first time or your thousandth time at church, are you gonna allow Jesus and the Holy Spirit to change your life? Are you gonna actually start praying and reading your Bible? Or are you gonna continue to put it off? Are you gonna continue to put it off? Or will today be the start of something new in your walk of faith?
