Guilt and Worry
Morning Mantra: "The two most unnecessary emotions in life are guilt and worry."
This mantra is from one of my favorite authors and life gurus, Dr. Wayne Dyer.
It reminds us that when thinking about life, remember this; no amount of guilt can solve the past and no amount of anxiety can change the future.
Guilt is the weight of poor choices that you want to carry. It can be a reminder to not do something again, but the emotion of guilt will not change the past, only your actions can.
Guilt manifests as negative feelings we have about ourselves like worthlessness, inferiority, incompetence, or failure. The feeling that there are things in us that are lacking or missing or incomplete.
I ask you, how does that help you in the present moment? It doesn't. It clouds your life with negativity. If you carry a lot of guilt, you’re stuck in the past. You can't go back and change things and make it different, so put that burden down.
Worry is like worshiping a problem. It doesn’t come from thinking about the future, that can be actually fun and exciting, it comes from thinking only of negative outcomes and wanting to control them.
Good and bad things will happen in life, that is part of everyone’s journey. The secret is to not stress over what you can’t control. To be prepared but to let life flow then respond to what happens, when and IF it does.
If you worry a lot, it means you’re stuck in the future. And no amount of anxiety will allow you to control all the outcomes.
Guilt and anxiety take you in circles. Neither serve a useful purpose in the present moment. When you find yourself in the past (guilt) or in the future (worry) come back to your breath. Find things here now that you can focus on instead. Recognize that neither emotion is serving you and move through them.
