Maida’s new memoir, Gutted: How an Old House Remodeled Me, set out to be a book about renovating a hundred-year-old house in Woodstock, Illinois. What it became, she told me, was a book about giving up the need for things to be finished and correct on her own schedule — and what that release made possible in her marriage and with her four daughters.
