Anyway, from us talking about measuring our sleep with the sleep tracker, for"},{"speaker":"Nick Engerer","startTime":349.3,"endTime":352.69,"body":"example, if you have something like that, you're already measuring body data."},{"speaker":"Nick Engerer","startTime":352.69,"endTime":355.96,"body":"You can run an experiment, you could try a different supplement, you could try blue light"},{"speaker":"Nick Engerer","startTime":355.96,"endTime":357.1,"body":"blockers before bed."},{"speaker":"Nick Engerer","startTime":357.1,"endTime":360.64,"body":"You could try turning your social media off your phone completely off 2 hours before bed"},{"speaker":"Nick Engerer","startTime":360.64,"endTime":362.11,"body":"and seeing how your sleep changes."},{"speaker":"Nick Engerer","startTime":362.11,"endTime":365.62,"body":"It's actually immediately accessible for many different reasons."},{"speaker":"Nick Engerer","startTime":365.62,"endTime":369.16,"body":"One of those being that we're all wearing these wearables now that give us information"},{"speaker":"Nick Engerer","startTime":369.16,"endTime":370.42,"body":"about our bodies, for example."},{"speaker":"Nick Engerer","startTime":370.42,"endTime":374.44,"body":"So I think one of the things that I'm most passionate about is making biohacking,"},{"speaker":"Nick Engerer","startTime":374.44,"endTime":377.47,"body":"particularly longevity biohacking, accessible to everyone."},{"speaker":"Nick Engerer","startTime":377.48,"endTime":380.83,"body":"It's actually fairly simple thing to do, even though it might sound overwhelming."},{"speaker":"Peter Bowes","startTime":381.1,"endTime":384.4,"body":"And you're obviously in great shape, it's obviously working for you."},{"speaker":"Peter Bowes","startTime":384.4,"endTime":388.03,"body":"You're a swimmer, you're a runner, you're a triathlete."},{"speaker":"Peter Bowes","startTime":388.03,"endTime":391.75,"body":"When did all of that start and what sort of heights have you managed to reach with those"},{"speaker":"Peter Bowes","startTime":391.75,"endTime":392.17,"body":"sports?"},{"speaker":"Nick Engerer","startTime":392.17,"endTime":397.09,"body":"Yeah, this is really, really a fun process for me because I've I've connected a lot with"},{"speaker":"Nick Engerer","startTime":397.09,"endTime":401.44,"body":"doing things like running and weightlifting since I was a teenager."},{"speaker":"Nick Engerer","startTime":401.44,"endTime":406.93,"body":"And I've found that I had motivations mostly in that space of looking fit and maybe"},{"speaker":"Nick Engerer","startTime":406.93,"endTime":410.23,"body":"getting a girlfriend, you know, because I wanted to be a bit musclier here, but as I've"},{"speaker":"Nick Engerer","startTime":410.23,"endTime":414.43,"body":"gone on in my life, I've connected that with longevity more directly."},{"speaker":"Nick Engerer","startTime":414.43,"endTime":417.52,"body":"And there's, there's a number I really, really like out there."},{"speaker":"Nick Engerer","startTime":417.52,"endTime":422.86,"body":"Peter. And it's the increase in healthy lifespan that endurance athletes get."},{"speaker":"Nick Engerer","startTime":422.86,"endTime":427.12,"body":"And it's around 5 to 6 years, 5 to 6 years for endurance athletes."},{"speaker":"Nick Engerer","startTime":427.12,"endTime":431.68,"body":"That is a number you won't get from anything else in the longevity and healthspan space."},{"speaker":"Nick Engerer","startTime":431.68,"endTime":436.39,"body":"And so once I learned about that and did a deep dive on exercise and really begin to"},{"speaker":"Nick Engerer","startTime":436.39,"endTime":442.66,"body":"understand its connection with Healthspan and human longevity, I dove with a new level of"},{"speaker":"Nick Engerer","startTime":442.66,"endTime":447.79,"body":"passion into the sport of running and swimming and then started adding some cycling and"},{"speaker":"Nick Engerer","startTime":447.79,"endTime":450.31,"body":"thought, You know what? I'm going to give a triathlon a try and I've fallen in love with"},{"speaker":"Nick Engerer","startTime":450.31,"endTime":450.55,"body":"the sport."},{"speaker":"Peter Bowes","startTime":450.58,"endTime":454.36,"body":"That's really interesting. There's one aspect of my sort of biometrics right now, and that"},{"speaker":"Peter Bowes","startTime":454.36,"endTime":461.17,"body":"is my low resting heart rate that I credit my days of endurance, triathlons, multiple"},{"speaker":"Peter Bowes","startTime":461.17,"endTime":465.97,"body":"marathons. I think it's all stems from those days, and thankfully it hasn't left me."},{"speaker":"Nick Engerer","startTime":466.0,"endTime":469.69,"body":"It's actually really interesting you mention that because people who do endurance sports"},{"speaker":"Nick Engerer","startTime":469.69,"endTime":474.52,"body":"when they're younger, later in life tend to continue on with the benefits of a strong"},{"speaker":"Nick Engerer","startTime":474.52,"endTime":478.6,"body":"heart. And those endurance sports are more accessible to them because you've already"},{"speaker":"Nick Engerer","startTime":478.6,"endTime":482.23,"body":"forced the bodily adaptations it takes to be an endurance athlete."},{"speaker":"Nick Engerer","startTime":482.23,"endTime":486.88,"body":"And your body remembers that your body has a system of epigenetics, which is the layer on"},{"speaker":"Nick Engerer","startTime":486.88,"endTime":490.9,"body":"top of your DNA that tells your cells how to express themselves and how to operate and"},{"speaker":"Nick Engerer","startTime":490.9,"endTime":495.22,"body":"how to use that DNA and research has shown that doing things like weight training,"},{"speaker":"Nick Engerer","startTime":495.22,"endTime":497.29,"body":"endurance, sports, your body remembers that."},{"speaker":"Nick Engerer","startTime":497.29,"endTime":502.0,"body":"And in particular, when you're younger, your body adapts more quickly to do those things."},{"speaker":"Nick Engerer","startTime":502.18,"endTime":506.14,"body":"Now, for example, you can see teenagers or people in your twenties taking up sports and"},{"speaker":"Nick Engerer","startTime":506.14,"endTime":507.67,"body":"accelerating with them really quickly."},{"speaker":"Nick Engerer","startTime":507.7,"endTime":510.79,"body":"For somebody like me who started triathlon in his mid thirties, I've had to go a bit"},{"speaker":"Nick Engerer","startTime":510.79,"endTime":514.06,"body":"slower, not too much, a bit slower to get those same adaptations."},{"speaker":"Nick Engerer","startTime":514.06,"endTime":516.46,"body":"But once you do that hard work, it does stay with you."},{"speaker":"Nick Engerer","startTime":516.46,"endTime":518.14,"body":"Even if you set that sport down."},{"speaker":"Nick Engerer","startTime":518.14,"endTime":521.71,"body":"It's important to get that adaptation built in and you're still benefiting from it."},{"speaker":"Peter Bowes","startTime":521.71,"endTime":526.75,"body":"Exactly. And what's I think really interesting is, let's say for most people from ordinary"},{"speaker":"Peter Bowes","startTime":526.75,"endTime":530.62,"body":"people who maybe don't want to go to the extremes that you do and that I do to some"},{"speaker":"Peter Bowes","startTime":530.62,"endTime":535.81,"body":"extent is that you can learn from all of these interventions and you don't have to go to"},{"speaker":"Peter Bowes","startTime":535.81,"endTime":538.48,"body":"the the nth degree to get a benefit."},{"speaker":"Peter Bowes","startTime":538.48,"endTime":544.63,"body":"You can walk 30 minutes a day at a moderate pace and get a huge benefit in terms of your"},{"speaker":"Peter Bowes","startTime":544.63,"endTime":546.52,"body":"everyday health and your future healthspan."},{"speaker":"Nick Engerer","startTime":546.52,"endTime":548.47,"body":"You're not wrong about that, Peter."},{"speaker":"Nick Engerer","startTime":548.47,"endTime":551.89,"body":"In fact, that's probably the most important message is that these small changes,"},{"speaker":"Nick Engerer","startTime":551.89,"endTime":555.37,"body":"particularly ones that help us build healthy habits, are the most important."},{"speaker":"Nick Engerer","startTime":555.37,"endTime":557.11,"body":"They're the easiest starting point."},{"speaker":"Nick Engerer","startTime":557.11,"endTime":560.11,"body":"They're free, and they get you the most benefit you might get."},{"speaker":"Nick Engerer","startTime":560.11,"endTime":564.31,"body":"Just to use an illustration, you might get 70, 75% of the longevity benefit we're"},{"speaker":"Nick Engerer","startTime":564.31,"endTime":567.43,"body":"discussing just from a regular, vigorous walking habit."},{"speaker":"Nick Engerer","startTime":567.43,"endTime":570.34,"body":"Particularly, we get on some trails like we're on right now, get some hills in there, get"},{"speaker":"Nick Engerer","startTime":570.34,"endTime":573.89,"body":"your heart beating.
