The Great Commandment to love your neighbor as yourself assumes you already love yourself well. Many struggle with self-love because they've accepted false substitutes like possessiveness, dependency, or self-neglect instead of true biblical love. True love is a volitional choice that seeks genuine good regardless of merit or cost. To love yourself properly, you must see yourself through God's eyes, forgive yourself for past mistakes, take personal responsibility for your actions and healing, set healthy boundaries, and develop a theology of self-care. When you understand your worth to God and care for yourself authentically, you can love others from a place of wholeness rather than neediness.
