"AOC, "Tax the Rich" and Capitalist Realism | Thinking Out Loud"
In this episode of his "Thinking Out Loud" series, Double D discusses the controversy surrounding AOC wearing a "Tax the Rich" gown to the Met Gala.
Double D explains that many view the dress as an out of touch moment of political theater, where a supposed advocate of the working class attends an event which grossly reflects an institutionalized class system.
Double D continues by ruminating on the irony of viewing such a publicity stunt as meaningful while the country mourns the death of hundreds of thousands of pandemic victims, stares down a looming eviction crisis, and faces extreme climate change related weather events.
Going on, Double D talks about the failures of progressivism, and how politicians like AOC, slogans like "Tax the Rich", and the selling out of political movements by opportunistic leaders, represents a trend known as Capitalist Realism.
Double D defines Capitalist Realism as a sociological phenomena where upon anti-capitalist sentiment is no longer geared towards a moving away from capitalist systems, rather, it is used to shore up capitalism through the commodification of revolutionary sentiment, and a reinforcement of the idea that moving beyond capitalism is impossible.
Double D rounds off the video by examining how Capitalist Realism realism relates to the divide of the "American Left", but finds a moment of hope ruminating on the increasing number of people who can be seen resisting our ideologue political culture and the insidious perversions of thought brought on by capitalist systems.
