Phil Spencer has stepped away from leading Xbox, closing one of the most transformative eras in the brand’s history. But what exactly is his legacy?

When Phil Spencer took control of Xbox in 2014, the brand was struggling after the disastrous launch of the Xbox One. Trust with gamers was broken, PlayStation was dominating the generation, and many wondered if Xbox could recover at all.

Over the next decade, Spencer helped reshape Microsoft’s gaming strategy in ways that are still influencing the industry today. From rebuilding goodwill with players to launching Xbox Game Pass and expanding Xbox beyond the console into PC and cloud gaming, the Spencer era completely changed what Xbox represents.

But his leadership has also been controversial.

Critics argue that Xbox lost its identity as a traditional console platform, struggled with major first-party exclusives, and focused too heavily on services over system-selling games.

So which version of the story is true?

On Today's Meta beta Gaming, Mattherw talks about Phil Spencer's time and legacy with Xbox.
