In today's episode, we'll learn some expressions of quantity, and more specifically, food-related expressions of quantity, such as "une bouteille de..." (a bottle of...)

Saying "une bouteille d'eau" (a bottle of water) is a bit more precise than just using the partitive article, which would be "de l'eau" (some water.) Which we've talked about in the previous episode. So it's more specific. Pretty useful when you're shopping for food, ordering a meal, drink, or even reading a recipe in French! 

Anyways, I'll share with you 20 food-related expressions of quantity, and I'll give an example of a food item or drink with it.

Alright, so let's get started. 

Actually, something else. You'll notice that each expression is used with the word "de" (meaning "of") When "de" is followed by a word starting with a vowel (or a mute H); make sure you change "de" to "d'." I'll give you some examples of that as well.

Ok so repeat after me, répetez après moi:

• une bouteille de champagne (a bottle of champagne) 🍾
• un verre de vin (a glass of wine)🍷
• une carafe d'eau (a jug of water)
• une tasse de café (a cup of coffee) ☕️
• une canette de bière (a can of beer) 🍺
• une part de gâteau (a piece/slice of cake) 🍰
• un bol de céréales (a bowl of cereal)
• une boîte de chocolats (a box of chocolates)
• un pot de confiture (a jar of jam)🧂
• un paquet de biscuits (a packet of cookies)
• un bout de pain (a piece of bread) 🍞
• un morceau de fromage (a piece of cheese) 🧀
• une tranche de jambon (a slice of ham)
• une pincée de sel (a pinch of salt)🧂
• une assiette de frites (a plate of fries)
• 100 grammes de sucre (100 grams of sugar)
• une cuillère à café de vinaigre (a teaspoon of vinegar)

“Teaspoon” is most commonly translated as “cuillère à café”, more rarely “cuillère à thé.”

• une cuillère à soupe d'huile (a tablespoon of oil)
• un litre de lait (a liter of milk)
• un kilo de pommes de terre (a kilo of potatoes) 🥔
