Today, we’re learning another essential verb, and that’s the verb “savoir,” which means to know, and its conjugation in the present tense.

Now, savoir is a very common verb in French. It’s also often confused with the verb “connaître,” which also means to know. If you’re not sure about the difference between these two verbs, make sure you listen to episode 90 of the French Made Easy podcast, where I explain the difference in depth.

Anyway, back to today’s lesson — we’ll focus on how to conjugate savoir in the present tense.

Before we jump in: remember that the present tense is used to talk about what’s happening right now, or what you do regularly.

Conjugation

Now, let’s conjugate the verb savoir in the present tense.

• je sais (I know)
• tu sais (you know)
• il / elle sait (he / she knows)
• on sait (we know — informal)
• nous savons (we know)
• vous savez (you know — formal or plural)
• ils / elles savent (they know)

Example Sentences

• Je ne sais pas comment dire ce mot en français. (I don’t know how to say this word in French.)
• Est-ce que tu sais parler espagnol ? (Do you know how to speak Spanish?)
• Il / Elle sait que tu es chez moi. (He / She knows that you are at my place.)
• On sait nager. (We know how to swim.)
• Nous savons nager. (We know how to swim.)
• Est-ce que vous savez où est la gare ? (Do you know where the train station is?)
• Ils / Elles savent jouer du piano. (They know how to play the piano.)
