Today, we’re learning a very common French verb, and that’s the verb “dire,” which means to say or to tell. We’ll look at how to conjugate dire in the present tense.

Conjugation

Alright, let’s conjugate dire in the present tense.

Before we jump in: remember that the present tense is used to talk about what’s happening now, and things you do regularly.

• je dis (I say / I tell)
• tu dis (you say — informal)
• il / elle dit (he / she says)
• on dit (we say — informal)
• nous disons (we say)
• vous dites (you say — formal or plural)
• ils / elles disent (they say)

Example Sentences

Now, let’s see some example sentences. Please repeat after me:

• Je dis la vérité. (I tell the truth.)
• Pourquoi tu ne dis rien ? (Why aren’t you saying anything?)
• Il / elle ne dit pas souvent bonjour. (He / she doesn’t often say hello.)
• On dit beaucoup de bêtises. (We say a lot of silly things.)
• Nous disons ça pour ton bien. (We say that for your own good.)
• Vous dites souvent la même chose. (You often say the same thing.)
• Ils / elles disent que c’est facile à comprendre. (They say it’s easy to understand.)
