Today, we’re learning some useful French vocabulary for when you go to the doctor — must-know words and expressions you’ll hear or use during a doctor’s visit. And we’ll do a part 2 soon for this episode.

Alright, we’ve got 18+ words and expressions, plus example sentences so you can hear how the words are used in context.

Let’s start:

  • le médecin / le docteur 🩺 (doctor)

Je suis chez le médecin. (I’m at the doctor’s.)

  • le patient / la patiente 👨‍🦳 (patient)

Le patient attend dans la salle d’attente. (The patient is waiting in the waiting room.)

  • l’ordonnance 📝 (prescription, script)

Le médecin m’a donné une ordonnance. (The doctor gave me a prescription.)

  • la pharmacie 🏥 (pharmacy)

Je vais à la pharmacie pour acheter mes médicaments. (I’m going to the pharmacy to buy my medication.)

  • le médicament 💊 (medicine, medication)

Je dois prendre ce médicament trois fois par jour. (I have to take this medication three times a day.)

  • Je suis malade 🤒 (I’m sick / not feeling well)

Je suis malade depuis hier. (I’ve been sick since yesterday.)

  • J’ai mal à… 😣 (I have pain in / My … hurts)

J’ai mal à la gorge. (My throat hurts.) / J’ai mal à la tête. (I have a headache.) / J'ai mal aux dents. (My teeth are hurting.) 

  • la fièvre 🌡️ (fever)

J’ai de la fièvre depuis hier. (I’ve had a fever since yesterday.)

  • la toux / tousser 😷 (cough / to cough)

Je tousse beaucoup. (I cough a lot.)

  • le rhume / la grippe 🤧 (cold / flu)

J’ai attrapé un rhume. (I caught a cold.) / J’ai la grippe. (I have the flu.)

  • la blessure 🤕 (injury)

Il a une petite blessure à la main. (He has a small injury on his hand.)

  • le rendez-vous 📅 (appointment)

J’ai rendez-vous chez le médecin jeudi prochain. (I have an appointment at the doctor’s next Thursday.)

  • le cabinet médical 🏥 (doctor’s office)

Le cabinet médical est en ville. (The doctor’s office is in town.)

  • la température 🌡️ (temperature)

Le médecin prend ma température. (The doctor takes my temperature.)

  • la piqûre 💉 (injection / shot)

Je déteste les piqûres ! (I hate injections!)

  • le pansement 🩹 (bandaid)

Elle met un pansement sur sa main. (She puts a bandage on her hand.)

  • le vaccin 💉 (vaccine)

Je vais faire mon vaccin demain. (I’m getting my vaccine tomorrow.)

  • le thermomètre 🌡️ (thermometer)

J’utilise un thermomètre pour prendre ma température. (I use a thermometer to check my temperature.)
