We push the pause button to check out where we are as we approach the mid-term elections. And we worry about what appears to be election chaos and Trump's use of the United States Postal Service to determine who gets to vote.
Welcome to another episode of Inside Golden State Politics. I'm Bill Boyarsky, the former city editor and a columnist for the Los Angeles Times, and with me is our producer director, Nancy Boyarsky
squadcaster-316d_2_09-02-2026_154121And I'm Sherry Bebitch Jeffe, political analyst and self-styled media maven, coming to you from having watched that horror movie, The Creature from the Trump Lagoon, which of course is now streaming on Plus. now we can use our new special US passports with Trump's face and signature on them. that's real, people. That's real. trouble, to travel Trumpland, which is located in the North Trumpistic Ocean, north- northeast of Canada and northwest of Iceland. How much crazier can this whole Trump branding of America thing get? I don't know, but it's time we hit the pause button and look around at where the Golden State and the US may be heading politically. So to you, Bill.
host-4ha0_2_09-02-2026_154122Hey, Sherry, when you go to the airport, are you going to tip the serving person with one of the new Trump dollar coins? No.
squadcaster-316d_2_09-02-2026_154121No. No
host-4ha0_2_09-02-2026_154122Are you afraid that the serving person won't accept it?
squadcaster-316d_2_09-02-2026_154121No, I'm just saying I won't touch the damn things
host-4ha0_2_09-02-2026_154122I'll tell you something. This was a great week for older people. This was a week to remember. This was the week when Senator Ed Markey of Massachusetts overwhelmingly defeated his Democratic challenger Seth Moulton in an election watched all over the country. I guess it says a lot. It says to me that Markey is a very attractive candidate. He's a handsome guy. He's- got a good record as a member of Congress. While 80-year-old Senator Markey was working around to get elected 80-year-old President Trump was working so hard to screw up the coming elections the midterm elections and the November elections. And he's trying his darndest to do that, which is,
squadcaster-316d_2_09-02-2026_154121which is his number one priority other than that of builder-in-chief, or tearing downer of chief. It seems to me he's spending more time in Washington DC in his own image than he is in trying to solve the major problems that are, bothering this nation or that are brutalizing the world far. I don't know, this is not anything that I thought we'd see in the president of the United States, let alone the president of the United States in a flailing economy and in the midst of basically two wars. But that's all he's doing. He's taking time out now pitch for the Save America Act by trying, for whatever reason in there, we can talk about what they are, by trying to create chaos and confusion prior to the midterm elections. So if the midterms don't go the way he wants them to go, he can then yell, "Foul. Foul. See? Look. Look. It-- We've had all of this voting fraud and these elections are fraudulent too." This is weird. I'm sorry.
host-4ha0_2_09-02-2026_154122I think that's what, I think that's what this is all about. He's afraid that that the Democrats will win the November and midterms and the November elections and gain a majority in in the Senate and the House. And worse than that, embarrass him, make him,
squadcaster-316d_2_09-02-2026_154121get
host-4ha0_2_09-02-2026_154122make-- that's to him, that's much worse. So he's doing everything he can and it's going to be hell, for somebody who just wants to vote, like the, the regular voter, gonna have a really h- hard time under the Trump rules if they are,
squadcaster-316d_2_09-02-2026_154121if they
host-4ha0_2_09-02-2026_154122if they get approved by the court
squadcaster-316d_2_09-02-2026_154121Exactly, but I'm not at all sure, quite frankly, that's the major priority. I'm beginning to think that the major priority in all that he's doing to impose these strict and somewhat stupid rules on mail voting is more to create confusion and chaos, and then he can say, "Ah, a national emergency." I don't think he... not at all sure he's gonna wait until the votes are counted to move to gain tighter control over the voting process. And the mere thought of the United States Postal Service a gatekeeper,- having the weighty responsibility of who gets to vote who doesn't, who gets the mail-in ballot, it, and who doesn't, is stupid as hell. Not to mention inefficient as hell. So I don't
host-4ha0_2_09-02-2026_154122George
squadcaster-316d_2_09-02-2026_154121that the vote itself, to begin with anyway, w- he will wait until the votes are counted to start screaming
host-4ha0_2_09-02-2026_154122I agree that's what could happen. I think that someone who's a really a, a expert on all this, Professor Joyce Vance, called it an attack, on free and fair elections. I think that really puts it well, and that's how America sh- should start thinking about what's happening. This is happening right now Sherry? This isn't-- we're not talking three months down the road.
squadcaster-316d_2_09-02-2026_1541214th, two days from now, the first a- absentee vote by mail ballots will go out from the first state, I believe it's North Carolina. The demand that the postal service the design of each state's mail-in ballot, wait a minute, this is less than two months before the election, days before the first envelopes go out. That is lunatic. I don't know any other words. I'm just gonna keep screaming through this entire podcast. Stupid, autocratic, unconstitutional, illegal.
host-4ha0_2_09-02-2026_154122Probably illegal. You know how it's going to work, and I think this is definitely gonna cause confusion in households all over the country, is that, these ballots come in they're cast, and then they go to some sort of accounting center. They come in, let's call them batches. Call them batches or boxes, whatever you wanna call them, but there's a bunch of ballots. Now,, the vote counters will have a list of people who are eligible. Now, if there is a name in the, among those ballots in this huge ba- batches of ballots, if there's a name that does not match the name that was submitted by the post office or by DHS they have a say in this too then the whole batch will be thrown out. In other words, one mistaken ballot invalidates a whole bunch of ballots. That's enough to cost an election or to tilt an election, to tilt an election toward President Trump
squadcaster-316d_2_09-02-2026_154121We're talking about the midterms right
host-4ha0_2_09-02-2026_154122Right
squadcaster-316d_2_09-02-2026_154121Apparently he also thinks he's running in the midterms because he just put out a new ad for the midterms to play in significant states, which is basically a political ad President Donald Trump. I, I think in the one, one iteration of the ad that I saw, there was a speaking, but all he was saying was that how wonderful President Trump was. And I kept thinking, "Is this an ad for that candidate or is it an ad for Trump?"
host-4ha0_2_09-02-2026_154122Yeah
squadcaster-316d_2_09-02-2026_154121I, go back to the receipt of, the lists from the states. first of all, we've said this before, and we'll say it again, the post office, the entire executive branch has no business, no responsibility r- regarding elections in this country. It is the pr- provisions that were put set aside, unless Congress made some tweaks in those provisions, by the states and localities. I, what the... Here I'm telling you again. and here's what's really rancid about it. This new portal, this federal portal which will be established in the states... Would, if this becomes real, have to send all voter information through that portal the postal service, and there's some very private information on those those names that are just gonna be sent to the US Postal Service. I think that violates privacy, don't you? Which is also, to violate privacy is unconstitutional, at least most cases. And who gets to decide? Not the election officials. It's whoever looks at those names and them with the information that the US has. And suppose you moved and forgot to change your address. "Oops," the mail, we ain't delivering this." you m- if you married and you haven't-- And you have changed your name, and there's, no evidence that your maiden name is and they can't find your name because you're still under your maiden name, out. I, it appears to me... I'm still trying settle this in my own mind as to what the actual motivation is for Trump and the Trump administration to put together this really ridiculous system of doing what?
host-4ha0_2_09-02-2026_154122What?
squadcaster-316d_2_09-02-2026_154121People from casting their votes
host-4ha0_2_09-02-2026_154122Let's substitute s- let's substitute the word diabolical,
squadcaster-316d_2_09-02-2026_154121Okay?
host-4ha0_2_09-02-2026_154122stupid
squadcaster-316d_2_09-02-2026_154121It's not either/or, my dear. It is both diabolical and and it may happen. Excuse me
host-4ha0_2_09-02-2026_154122And I think the reason he wants to do it, to get back to what I was saying earlier, is to take away votes from Democrats. Cut down the Democratic vote. And there's a real good example of that's happening in Texas, in Tarrant County, where 30% of the polling places in Democratic areas are being closed down. In other words, that's 30% of the voters in that county who are Democrats will not be able to vote. That's enough to tilt an election, and the Republicans know that. They're going about this vote by vote, figuring out what can we do here and what can we do there. And their goal is to cut down the Democratic vote so that Trump or whoever his successor is will win
squadcaster-316d_2_09-02-2026_154121No the Democratic vote, yes, and most particularly the vote of people of color. There are a few Republican polling sites that have been taken off the map, but there were far more Democratic-leaning sites within Tarrant County that are no longer being in use. There was one elderly woman who was interviewed who said, "I, I can't vote now. I have no way to get to a voting place that's 15 miles my home. I'm used to voting a voting site that's less than two miles from my home." all of this is just so obvious, and yet it appears to be happening, and it's not only wrong, it's unconstitutional, it's illegal, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. Now, we haven't reached the conclusion of this story yet. Everything's gonna go right back up to the Supreme Court, but nonetheless, that's the way it looks right now. I... I'm
host-4ha0_2_09-02-2026_154122Court is,
squadcaster-316d_2_09-02-2026_154121to say. I'm sorry, go ahead
host-4ha0_2_09-02-2026_154122I was just gonna say the Supreme Court is, so s- slow-moving on this matter. And the and the Trump administration,
squadcaster-316d_2_09-02-2026_154121him to read the goddamn Constitution.
host-4ha0_2_09-02-2026_154122They don't care about that. I think that they're slowly moving toward whatever conclusion they reach. Meanwhile, Tr- Trump, amazing running for an 80-year-old, is racing toward eliminating as many votes as possible.
squadcaster-316d_2_09-02-2026_154121I would not if I would
host-4ha0_2_09-02-2026_154122and they can do that. They look at the White House, that's bringing up a little different subject, but, the, s- still all this litigation about remodeling the White House and the ballroom and all that. Meanwhile, the w- workers are working 20 hours a day seven days a week completing the remodeling job. It will be long completed before the courts ever make a decision on this. And I'm afraid the election will be long over till the courts slowly grind their way to some sort of a decision. Somebody asked one of the administration people, "What about if we wanted to tear down the Statue of Liberty? Could the court stop that?" And the person said, probably not.". The Statue of Liberty could go, just like the White House. So I think we're up against something that we've never seen before
squadcaster-316d_2_09-02-2026_154121says just a bit far-fetched. I don't know who actually has control, I'll have to look that up, of the statue and of the area on which it is located. You do know that the statue is actually in New Jersey? The New Jersey side of the river.
host-4ha0_2_09-02-2026_154122Oh, is it?
squadcaster-316d_2_09-02-2026_154121ha. Oh, yeah. Check it out, people. I think I'm absolutely right 'cause I'm a Jersey girl and I know these things Yeah.
host-4ha0_2_09-02-2026_154122The one question that should occur to people even at this early date in September is how am I gonna vote?
squadcaster-316d_2_09-02-2026_154121Not so early.
host-4ha0_2_09-02-2026_154122What, how, where should I vote? How should I vote? Will I get a mailed ballot? Should I prepare to walk to my polling place? Are we returning to the old days where we, walked down the street to the polling booth or drove there and voted and then chatted with our neighbors and then got a little sticker to put on our shirt that said, "I voted"?
squadcaster-316d_2_09-02-2026_154121still get that in the mail
host-4ha0_2_09-02-2026_154122are we ever gonna return to those days? No. Or if you wanna be sure, I'm saying this, if you wanna be sure that your vote is gonna be counted in this coming election, go down to the polling place and put it in the box yourself
squadcaster-316d_2_09-02-2026_154121Or to one of the voting centers, and I assume California is still going to have voting centers. Ironically, I decided to try that in the 2025 elections. I vote from mail all the time. So I walked myself down... actually I drove, this is Los Angeles, to one of the voting centers, which is maybe five minutes from my home drive. You can't walk because we have very few sidewalks. I handed the ballot one of the, I assume, volunteers at the tables running. It was in a hotel, in the ballroom upstairs, and they at least had the presence of mind to put one of the volunteers at the front door so he could show you where to get the elevator to go upstairs to drop off your ballot, and I did. And I got home, and I got an email that said "We can't find your ballot." I said, "What? I gave it hand to one of the clerks." "Oh, We'll let you know." Finally, they did. I don't know where or how, but they discovered it, but they discovered it and sent me an e- email saying, "Your vote has been counted."
host-4ha0_2_09-02-2026_154122That's good
squadcaster-316d_2_09-02-2026_154121That doesn't give me a whole lot of c- confidence in almost kind of electoral system these days you know what, though? thinking because of what's happening and because of the attack on election officials at every level, state, federal,- and agencies and institutions, people are beginning to pay attention politically to offices way down ballot. Because much of this is being fought not only by officials on the state's level, but officials that have election responsibility on the county and district and lower levels of government. And I don't think that's such a bad thing. I think it's pretty cool that people remember that, not only does your vote or let me say, has your vote counted on a national and state level. It counts if you think about it's to decide on who gets to run elections to make the decisions on the down ballot levels. I think... And that's interesting
host-4ha0_2_09-02-2026_154122Yeah. This may not go as smoothly as Trump wants even with the addition... Oh, I didn't me- we didn't mention this. The even with the addition of a few thousand Department of Homeland Security troops in various
squadcaster-316d_2_09-02-2026_154121Oh,
host-4ha0_2_09-02-2026_154122areas,
squadcaster-316d_2_09-02-2026_154121about that.
host-4ha0_2_09-02-2026_154122Going to the polling places. What about that?
squadcaster-316d_2_09-02-2026_154121Apparently the Trump administration, the DHS has said, "No, we are not gonna assign ICE or federal agents to the polling place, but if there is evidence of a need to deploy them, will. If there is, some kind of a brouhaha, some chaos, whatever." And don't you know, there's no definition of when, how they will activate federal agents if they choose to do so.
host-4ha0_2_09-02-2026_154122There's no limit
squadcaster-316d_2_09-02-2026_154121one guy throws a sandwich to an ICE person, does that create an opening?
host-4ha0_2_09-02-2026_154122There's no reason why they can't. There's nothing will prevent them from doing s- doing so unless the courts take a stand
squadcaster-316d_2_09-02-2026_154121You can't be-- You know, according to the Supreme Court, that wouldn't be ripe. You would have to wait not only, I think, probably. until the sandwich hit the ice guy in his face because we haven't established any harm I think it's just... I don't know. I don't know. I am losing all kinds of hope in where we are going electorally and And what really angers me the most, Bill, is the fact that the Trump administration just keeps on doing it. Even when there was an injunction against preparing for the role of, the US Post Office in all of this, electoral reform, quote, unquote., The work went on disobeying, ignoring the judicial injunction to stop work From what I have read so far, and I haven't read enough, I will tell you that right now, more than once the Trump administration and/or related agency, the post office, et cetera disobeyed either the law or a judge's ruling. Ah, I'm sorry. I'm in a very bad mood these
host-4ha0_2_09-02-2026_154122what the, this leaves a a huge not opportunity. This leaves a huge task with the Democrats to make sure that people vote. We've talked a bit about, what's the cure for this electoral madness that we're in now in the midst of. And we've concluded that one cure is to vote. And I remember saying that kind of scoffing at that and saying, "Is that really enough?" But of course, it is the cure. And it's really going to be up to the candidates and the parties to get people out on television and in the neighborhoods with this message of they're trying to take away your vote. Now, that will have an impact, I think, because no one's really had that message for a long time. When was the last time we did that with when we dif- disenfranchised African American people during and after the Civil War?
squadcaster-316d_2_09-02-2026_154121but, if you don't have a majority, you don't have a majority, and it doesn't get instituted. think you're right in that this is one time where everybody needs to move out and to vote. And what's, what I'm hearing more and more often is vote in person, vote early, and that I think makes some sense. Although heaven only knows, I cannot believe that in two months they're going to have reliable, effective, legitimate method system of rooting out non-voters who are voting. If they do, it will go against all of the quality control initiatives that are usually followed when you're a new software, a new program, whatever. A- as far as I can tell, there's been very little testing to the reality, the a- the accuracy, the effectiveness of the new system.
host-4ha0_2_09-02-2026_154122The point that a whistleblower was making in his communication to Senator Blumenthal was that there is not
squadcaster-316d_2_09-02-2026_154121tell us what the bottom line conclusion of this whistleblower was,
host-4ha0_2_09-02-2026_154122He said they,
squadcaster-316d_2_09-02-2026_154121then
host-4ha0_2_09-02-2026_154122He said what you just said. There's no time, there's no time to install, to test, to work out any kind of a system the administration is talking about. But that, of course, is assuming that the administration wants a system that works.
squadcaster-316d_2_09-02-2026_154121That's right. Got it
host-4ha0_2_09-02-2026_154122and I say they don't
squadcaster-316d_2_09-02-2026_154121I don't think you're very far from the truth. I think the whole in all of this meshugenah, nut, stupid, movement is to create confusion, to create chaos. And I will never, rule out the possibility that somewhere there, somebody's looking at the dynamic of what they can do to initiate a national emergency even before the elections are held.
host-4ha0_2_09-02-2026_154122That's certainly the way Trump is going. And, what really makes me mad is that all this is ha- happening, this is like a revolution in our country, and all this is happening and it's treated in such a matter-of-fact way when you watch television or when you-- even when you read the newspapers, even a paper that's kicking ass on this subject like The New York Times. But everything is done in such a reasoned matter-of-fact, oh, it'll work out way.
squadcaster-316d_2_09-02-2026_154121By who?
host-4ha0_2_09-02-2026_154122nobody's
squadcaster-316d_2_09-02-2026_154121the media?
host-4ha0_2_09-02-2026_154122Angry. Where's the anger?
squadcaster-316d_2_09-02-2026_154121That's, here it is. I got it. Not that it's going to make any difference as the how this comes apart, but that was the question I was gonna ask you, what's the role of the media in all of this? I do think we are at a fulcrum here. This is it.
host-4ha0_2_09-02-2026_154122The role of the media is to nail Trump, to say that Trump is trying to steal this election that's their game plan. He's trying to steal the election, and we've got to stop him. That's it.
squadcaster-316d_2_09-02-2026_154121Is
host-4ha0_2_09-02-2026_154122Now that's a that's a simple, that's a pretty simple message
squadcaster-316d_2_09-02-2026_154121I have to think that one over as little trust as we now have in Trump and/or his administration, there is far less trust the voters have. They have also no trust in the media, particularly the mainstream media. And then here we have to go into the whole dynamic of social media. on the social media, some of them will say, "Trump is right. This is not about suppressing votes. This is about election integrity. And others will say, "Be careful. No, this is dangerous," and will make our decisions
host-4ha0_2_09-02-2026_154122I don't wanna wait for that. I think that if I were in charge of a campaign, which I'm not luckily, or any campaign, if I were in charge I'd just make my message pretty clear. Trump wants to steal this election.-- And this is what he wants to do, and I wouldn't go beyond that. I'd try to keep it simple, and I'd hammer it over and over again, and so people would get tired of it. Trump's trying to steal this election. We've got--
squadcaster-316d_2_09-02-2026_154121of it. They said stay home."
host-4ha0_2_09-02-2026_154122we've got to stop him. We've got to stop Trump and his steal. Stop the Trump steal. And keep it very simple. That's how I'd do it. And I'd send people all over the community, and I'd be on television, and I'd be on social media. I'd be everywhere with that simple message
squadcaster-316d_2_09-02-2026_154121You mean as a candidate? As a, as, as an elected official? As a candidate? I don't know.
host-4ha0_2_09-02-2026_154122That's
squadcaster-316d_2_09-02-2026_154121would you hire Robert De Niro to give that message to people?
host-4ha0_2_09-02-2026_154122He'd be good actually. I was just watching him the other night. I think that I'd hire-- I'd have my candidates say that. I'd like to h- I wanna hear your Adam Schiffs say that. I wanna say, I wanna see the, I wanna see the candidates for for office, I wanna see Newsom talk that way. I'd like to see
squadcaster-316d_2_09-02-2026_154121He already
host-4ha0_2_09-02-2026_154122Karen Bass talk that way. I'd like to hear something from Raman on that. I'd like to hear some strong affirmation, not affirmation, but some strong rally to fight this Trump and his election steal
squadcaster-316d_2_09-02-2026_154121Okay. again you can do it differently if you're running for a, a statewide or senatorial office, but you gotta pay attention to your district if you're running for a seat in the California Legislature or in Congress, every I assume is gonna approach this in a very different way. There's some indication now, the Trumpalooza midterm election, a midterm convention that's being held, I think, next week, and Politico went out interviewing, asking, Republican congresspeople, "Are you going?" There isn't a tidal wave of support already elected congresspeople running in the November elections. And of those who said, when they were asked why aren't you gonna be there?" A of them said, "It costs $25,000 for an elected buy a ticket." Okay. But then there were excuses far more ludicrous oh, it's the old, "Oh, I would, but I gotta wash my hair," or, "I have a fundraiser," "I have to be in my district," which is true. They need to be in their districts running,
host-4ha0_2_09-02-2026_154122They need to be running, but they've gotta have something to say. And among the things that they should be saying is what I've been saying. They've gotta have a, a...
squadcaster-316d_2_09-02-2026_154121district? No
host-4ha0_2_09-02-2026_154122my with my Democratic precinct walkers.
squadcaster-316d_2_09-02-2026_154121What?
host-4ha0_2_09-02-2026_154122The Republicans are so hopeless, Sherry. They don't have, they don't have the, the guts to, they don't have the ability or the initiative to fry an egg,
squadcaster-316d_2_09-02-2026_154121I don't know that I would lay that on as much as they're reacting as, A, as one would do in a cult. B, as one would do if you wanted to hang on to your office, to the power you perceive you have. I don't know whether it is gutless if, particularly if you look at it from the Democratic or Independent point of view, and the polls are showing But, if your district is a Trump district and you know it, you're... why the Republicans are so nervous right now, I think, because in districts that they should be able to hold, they're not in terms of nominees and in terms of special elections. what do you do then?
host-4ha0_2_09-02-2026_154122You don't punt anyway. All you can do if is, do what you can.
squadcaster-316d_2_09-02-2026_154121You gotta
host-4ha0_2_09-02-2026_154122you have a platform.
squadcaster-316d_2_09-02-2026_154121vote early. I said you gotta vote, and
host-4ha0_2_09-02-2026_154122Vote, vote early. Make sure your vote is counted. Make sure that everybody you know is go- going to the polling place. Hey, let's let's continue this next week. We also have to talk about the
squadcaster-316d_2_09-02-2026_154121haven't even gotten to whatever topic we were gonna get to after we solved the problem of Trump administration's grab of the voting So we've got a lot next week. We'll talk a bit more because I want to talk about, and I'll make this real quick, we as much as is careening around the pots in national politics, is there a gubernatorial campaign in California is the LA mayor's race? Everybody is focused on the lunacy of Washington
host-4ha0_2_09-02-2026_154122well, that's on our shoulders, which is something we ought to do next week. Talk about that for sure. Well-
squadcaster-316d_2_09-02-2026_154121we'll have at least a poll,
host-4ha0_2_09-02-2026_154122Yeah
squadcaster-316d_2_09-02-2026_154121but I don't know why we don't yet. It's getting pretty close. And I'll close on this. Interestingly, the prediction markets basically have both campaigns in stay status. The gubernatorial race hasn't changed in terms of chance to win. is 95% sure, Hilton 5%, and mayor's race the same thing, same... Just a flat line with B- Bass 65% and Raman somewhere around 35, 36% and they're almost identical. This is a wild election season
host-4ha0_2_09-02-2026_154122It is. Okay. Talk to you in a week or so
squadcaster-316d_2_09-02-2026_154121Right? And everyone cheers.
host-4ha0_2_09-02-2026_154122Cheers to all. Bye-bye
