Phil joined the United States Marine Corps (USMC) during college in 2004 and commissioned as an officer in 2005. He served for 4 years as a Public Affairs Officer (PAO).
In this episode he talks about going through Officer Candidate School, The Basic School (TBS) and the process of joining up. He also talks about becoming a PAO and the build up training for deployment, before heading out to Iraq.
Phil goes on to share his time on deployment in Iraq, and his transition back to civilian life, where he has become a writer; releasing the award winning book called Redeployment in 2014, and one of Barrack Obama’s favourite books in 2020, called Missionaries.
