Memory · Voices From the Atelier PDB'21

André Cruz Season 1 Episode 26

We are what we do, especially what we do to change what we are, wrote Eduardo Galleano on his Voices of Time book.

Memory is directly linked to imagination. We are shaped by the memory of ancient practices, habits and modes of living. Facing a dark scenario regarding what living in our cities might be in a very near future, many people are looking back at old practices and also moving to rural environments. Design is based on memories, whether visual, physical, sensory, ethnographic and cultural. It has been an important tool in the assertion of identities but also, we must not ignore the role that design has played in sustaining civilizational models where justice is anything but blind. Focusing on this aspect of design, I invited the designer and professor Paul Sahre and the cultural researcher, designer and editor of DEEM Journal, Alice Grandoit.
