People can say detrimental things to their dreams, to their possibilities, even inadvertently. The subconscious mind hears everything. And so when you say, Oh boy, I I never can, I never win at these things. I try, I never win at these things. And your subconscious mind starts processing that I never win idea. And so our mobs have such power that one of the great foundations for change is to determine what you say about yourself. Be deliberate about it and say only good things about yourself.
SPEAKER_00Episode 191. Welcome, new and old listeners. This is your host, Sandy B, and I invite you to enjoy this episode. Hello and welcome to the 90-day wins every dot block entrepreneur of excellence series. I'm your host, Coach Sandy B, and today I am with Dr. Herbert Harris. Hello, Dr. Harris.
SPEAKER_01How are you, Coach Sandy B?
SPEAKER_00I am well. Thank you for being here. I'm so excited to talk with you today.
SPEAKER_01My pleasure. You know, I've been looking forward to it. I love the work that you all are doing, and Jimmy and the whole organization is just doing incredible stuff.
SPEAKER_00Yes. So before we get started with my questions, I want you to share a little bit about yourself, and then we'll go into my specific questions.
SPEAKER_01Sure. Sure. Well, you know, I am a retired attorney and a network marketing expert, entrepreneur. I'm also a co-minister at the Unity Church here in Wilmington. I've written eight books, and the most famous is uh The 12 Universal Laws of Success. And my first book was a book called How to Make Money in Music when I was in the music industry. And so those two books, between the two of Solo Gamillion of Copies. So my work now is really to let the people know that it's never too late. That you can always start over, that you can create a new ending. You can't change the beginning, but you can change a new ending. And so I do that through the 12 Universal Laws of Success. We have a success mentorship mastermind group that meets every Saturday morning at 8 a.m. And uh we have different speakers, but it's a a center for people with ideas and with not just ideas but with messages. So it's it's it's been a whole new awakening for me, and I look at my job as being a guide to help others be, do, and have anything they can imagine.
SPEAKER_00I love it. Tell me what encouraged you to start this work now. You talk about being retired and all the experience from the music industry. You've had an amazing career. So why is this important to you at this moment?
SPEAKER_01Well, a number of reasons. Number one, I'm a baby boomer. People say, Well, how old are you, doctor? And I test their mathematical ability. I tell them I was born in 1944. And they calculate from there. And what I find is that people are living longer. Yes. That there are the baby boomers, the people who are 50, 60, 70 years old, many of them have uh retired and really almost run out of life. And so what I'm saying to them is it's never too late to be great. You reinvent yourself. Yeah. And then we have the younger people, you know. Um, my message to younger people is if I can show you the way, I can cut down your learning curve. I can get you to a point of profitability, effectiveness much quicker because you don't have to make the mistakes I made. Yes, sir. And then for those people who are looking, you know, that many people come to a point in their lives where they're just not sure where to go, what to next. And some people call it, what's it, the that 40s, that uh that midlife crisis. Yes. And so I want to say to them that they are at the peak of their possibilities. They're relatively young, their health is good, their earning capacity is in a good place, and so why not go for it? Why not look at what you love doing? Now look at what you're good at. That may not be your profession, but that says now there's time to make a mid-course correction and go for your dreams.
SPEAKER_00I love it. I love it. So I want to go deeper into your bio based on what I've learned. So you began your career as an attorney, and then you transitioned into writing, teaching, and personal development. So, what inspired that shift, and how does your legal background still influence the way you teach success today?
SPEAKER_01Well, let's go backwards. The legal background always provides a structure for how to approach a challenge. You know, one of my specialties in law was writing briefs. And then a brief, you basically state your conclusion, and then so the person knows where you're going, and then you you lay out your reasoning and the law to get you to that conclusion. Yeah. And so in life, if I can help you see where you're going, then now we can develop a strategy, a plan, and how to execute that plan to get you there. So the law is always uh a nice approach to things. The reasoning, though, is that I came to a point in my life where I was always a student. Yes, and it excited me about learning. So I traveled to Egypt with Dr. Ben because I wanted to see the pyramids, and I wanted to study with a man who saw it from my perspective. I traveled to different countries because I always wanted to see. And it seems that the more I learned, the more excited I got about learning. Yeah. And I realized that there are a lot of people like that. And I wanted to say, hey, if you were the smartest one in your group, you're in the wrong group.
SPEAKER_00Wrong group. That's it. That's it. You're absolutely correct.
SPEAKER_01So my goal is to help people like just dream a little bit. Don't accept what you are, but consider what you can be.
SPEAKER_00I love it. So let's talk about the power of universal laws. Your book, The 12 Universal Laws of Success, has impacted readers worldwide and sold over 800,000 copies.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_00Which of those laws do you believe is most overlooked in today's fast-paced world, and why does it matter now more than ever? You know, it's interesting.
SPEAKER_01The law of command, okay, is the fourth law of success. And the law of command says basically you have whatever you say. That you speak the world into existence. You know, they says in the beginning was the word in the Bible. In your life, in the beginning is your word. And so people can say detrimental things to their dreams, to their possibilities, even inadvertently. Yes. The subconscious mind hears everything. And so when you say, Oh boy, I I never can, I never win at these things. You know, I try, I never win at these things. And your subconscious mind starts processing that I never win idea. Yeah. And so our mobs have such power that one of the great foundations for change is to determine what you say about yourself. Yeah. Be deliberate about it, and say only good things about yourself. Say only things that are congruent with where you want to be, what you want to do, who you want to become. Yes, sir. And so that now, and I say that because there's so much information on the internet. There's so much talking, talking, talking that to realize that what you say has such power that you can create your world based on what you say to yourself.
SPEAKER_00Yes. So what do you tell yourself?
SPEAKER_01I tell myself I am incredibly great. I'm absolutely brilliant, that I am a healthy, happy, rich author, speaker, teacher, spiritual guide that uplifts the lives of everybody on the planet.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. That's good. I like that. So let's talk about mentorship and legacy. As a former director under Reven Ike at the Science of Living Institute, you were exposed to a powerful philosophy of prosperity and transformation. What's the greatest lesson you carry forward from the mentorship into your own work? The greatest lesson for mentorship is the vision.
SPEAKER_01I once had a coach, and as a network marketer, you know how people always tell you, oh, you want a six-figure income. And he said, Well, what are your goals for this business? I had come into the business, had an incredible first month. My first month, I made$16,000. I mean, I came in smoking. And uh I was cruising along at about$20,000 a month. And uh I'm thinking, man, I have arrived. So he says, What are your goals for this business? I says, I want to make a million dollars a year. And I had calculated it all out. I said, that's uh$84,000 a month. And he said, interesting. And I thought he would be impressed and go, like, yay, go, go, go. You know what he said? Why not make a million dollars a month? And he said that, Sandy. So I had no vision of what my life would be when making a million dollars a month. And then I understood that that's why I wasn't making a million dollars a month. You can see it. You can see it. That's good. That's very good. And so that's sort of a demonstration of mentorship. If he had never said that, I may never have had that realization. So mentorship is important to help you see beyond your own perspective. There's an African proverb that says, man who has never left home thinks his mother is the best. So the mentorship gives you a bigger vision, not just of yourself, but of what's possible. So uh that mentorship piece is critical to help you see more, which and then help you be more. And from a functional operational point of view, how to do more efficiently and effectively. So when you have a mentor that can say to you, listen, if you don't lay out your your plan the night before, yeah, you're gonna spend half of the day trying to figure out what to do. But if you lay out your plan the night before, and if you schedule, don't just make a list of things, yeah, but put a time limit on, a time to be done, a time to be completed. Yeah. And if you do that one simple thing, you will increase your effectiveness exponentially.
SPEAKER_00That's it. That's some good, good advice. So let's talk about courage in conversation. In your book, Solving the Race Issue in America, you tackle one of the most complex and emotional issues of our time. How do you balance addressing systematic challenges while also empowering individuals to take personal responsibility for growth and change? Well, Sandy, that especially now, is uh such a challenge.
SPEAKER_01One of the blessings about living a long time is that you get a chance to see the cycles. Yes, sir. And so you can see I lived through the era of segregation, where it was the official law of the land, where it was sanctioned by the courts, by the government, and it was said it was alright. Yeah. Even the Supreme Court up until 1954 said it was alright. And so when we talk about that today, I can say I experienced it and it's not alright. And when you try to sugarcoat it, yeah, it's a very damaging thing because the Bible says know the truth, and the truth will set you free. If you don't recognize the past, recognize that which has transpired, then you'll never overcome it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And so you can be stuck in that that mindset that created segregation, that mindset that created racism. And if you never face it, it stays there in the soul of the country and the soul of the people. Many people have no idea who they really are because they don't know who they are. You know, as a as a minister, as a person who operates on all levels of diversity. Yeah. Many times I'll be talking to people of different races, and when I share my experience, they go, if it were not my experience, they would deny it altogether. Yeah. You know, I remember a man challenging me in a speech, and he says, Well, how do you know about the marcha in Washington? He'd heard it was basically a bunch of rabble rousers, and it was and it wasn't even significant. Well, how do you know? I said, Well, I was there. I saw a half million people. And not only was I there for that, I was there for the for the uh million man marsh of the inauguration of President Obama. So I could physically compare the crowds. So I don't have to worry about what somebody says. Yes. And so when you have that first-hand experience, it gives you sometimes more patience. Yes, sir. It gives you authority. They treat you badly. You don't get uh good food. You have to sleep in the basement, you have to work in the yard from sunup to sunup. If you tell me that's your experience and it's terrible, I'm gonna believe you because I know you. I can't comment on it because I hadn't seen it, but I know that you're a good person. And so when you tell me that's what it is, I'm gonna accept it. But yet when I tell you about my situation, about the impact of racism, you want me to document it. You want to know where did I hear this? If I have enough respect to believe you based on my relationship with you, then why don't you have enough respect for me to believe me based on my your relationship with me? Good point. And so it's it's walking that that that reality of understanding how deep this issue is, this divisive issue. It was it was a big issue in the Declaration of Independence. If that matter had been dealt with in the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson said, if we introduce the issue of slavery, then we can't have a a country because they could not agree on that. The southern planters and the northern businessmen, no way. And so that's why it was not mentioned in the Constitution. It didn't come out against slavery. And so that entire paradigm, that mindset was incorporated into the growth of the country as there's a seed planted in the garden. Yeah. And it continues to grow in the Civil War. More people died in the Civil War than died in the Vietnamese War. Hundred thousand people died in the Civil War. And so this issue was very important for that many people to die over, and yet it has not been resolved. The challenge is this, Sandy, when we talk about vision, can, and and I think all Americans are gonna have to have this realization that if we had a common vision of what America could be without racism, without these things that have been there as a cancer on the consciousness, can you imagine what America would be?
SPEAKER_00Your passion should already be paying you. If you're tired of watching the months roll by without the progress, you know you're capable of it's time to make a move. It's my private community where you will take action and we'll do it together. It's free to join, and it's where the real connection and accountability happens. Join today.
SPEAKER_01If the ladies who worked in the hidden figures, those black women who were mathematicians and scientists, yeah, if they could really have worked with all the resources out in the open, they didn't have to be hidden, what could they have invented? Yeah. If the lady who invented, who developed right now what we're doing, cellular, the uh satellite technology, yeah, the global positioning. They finally acknowledge her, okay? But can you imagine if if she were encouraged and uplifted, what her mind could have created? Yes. So to imagine America where we live up to our creed, where we live up to what we say we're about. Can you imagine where this country would be? We would truly be the city on the hill, and the world would look up to us with such admiration and dignity. Yeah. And our level of success would be beyond our wildest imagination.
SPEAKER_00Wow. That's so much to think about. And think about what we want, what is the future we want. You know, like I have a I have a 19 year old, and I remember at 19 all the things that I was excited about experiencing and excited about having opportunity to. Try go to school and experience these things. And you know, current day, it seems so difficult. It seems so hard. Things that I know I took for granted. What future will there be for her? What can I do? What little part can I do to help in creating that future that I want, even with all the noise around? So it's it's a lot to think about, but there's something you said before, and it brings me back to why every dot black is so important to me and why I'm glad to be a part of this organization, because you so beautifully exemplified why this organization is so important, because we get to have conversations with people like you've shared, you've gone before, you've seen so much, right? And in seeing that you can help people like me who's saying, I don't know, I don't know, Dr. Harris, it seems really tough. It's like, you know, how can I be encouraged to tell my daughter that it'll be okay because certain things, things that you've lived through in your life, I haven't lived through, right? So that's why, in being in community with people like you, people that are in every dot black, I can have that foundation, right? I can get to that grounding, know that, you know, the people that I'm connected with within this community have a understanding that, you know, we've been through some tough times as a community, and we can keep the faith, we can believe, we can truly be grounded in the truth of who we are.
SPEAKER_01Yes, yes. That's so powerful because every dot black is a foundation and can provide infrastructure. You you know, there is is an assault on uh education, sir and so we have to take uh responsibility to educate ourselves and to educate our children. Malcolm X said, Why would you want your children educated by your oppressor? And having gone to the integration court and watched it up close, the same people in my county, the Supreme Court decision was in 1954, they didn't integrate till 1968. In other words, they fought it for 18 for 14 years in the courts. So then when they pre when the government prevailed and said you must integrate, the school was still run by the same people that had fought it. And so how it was implemented was still questionable. So knowing that when we look at the current situation, it is important that organizations like Every Dot Black, and this is like the economic church, the church. The church was always the infrastructure on which our people have depended. After the Civil War, when they were trying to bring the country together, the only infrastructure in place for the slaves, the the former slaves of former enslaved people to be communicated with was the church. So when you travel through the South, you'll see an AME or an AME Zion Church every every 20 miles. Yes. You're like, why is that? Say, well, before car people had cars, they had to walk church. And so right now with these present challenges we have, one of our most important things that we must do is to take responsibility for educating ourselves. Yes. Take responsibility, Jim in yourself and all the others who've been around to take responsibility to share and perpetuate the knowledge that we have, yeah, so that our children will know what to do. And in addition to develop a new vision. Yeah. The scripture says where there's no vision, the people perish. The people perish, yes. You know. And it may not be the one that brings us good tidings. And so a vision, yeah, a new vision is necessary that is not just a black vision, not just a white vision, but it's an American vision that's true to the creed in which we say we want to be.
SPEAKER_00Yes. I believe it's a new day. So let's talk about success in the digital era. Through your success mentorship network, you've embraced the digital space to reach people globally. What excites you the most about how technology is shaping personal development and wealth creation for the next generation of entrepreneurs?
SPEAKER_01Well, number one, you have got to embrace it. It's like the the cell phone. When the I remember when the when the cell phone was first created, only a few of us had the they were the car phones. They weren't even cell phones, they were car phones. They cost about$400 a month, and they were big, they were huge. Well, the car phones, you had a whole big device in your truck, and you know, there were very few people you could call because the the service was terrible. Once you left the city limits, you were out of luck. And then that and and I know a lot of folks say, man, this is too expensive, it's not gonna catch you. And wasn't worse. Yes, and where is it? Then next thing came the bag phone. Yeah. And you carried it under your arm. And you started making calls and and it has evolved. Yes. Well, AI is like that. Yeah. It's just that it's evolving on steroids. Yes. The cell phones took 20 years. Okay. Yeah, in 20 months has dominated and impacted the world like the cell phone took 20 years to do. And so to exist, not just in the entrepreneur world, but in the world, period, you're gonna have to embrace it. Yes. If you n if you notice now that no very few newspapers, you hear the news, they say, oh, go online to get the full story. Yes. And so you're automatically sucked into this digital age. And so now the question is, how do you make it work for you? Exactly. How do you embrace it so that it can help uplift your life? You can embrace it that help you uh build your business more efficiently. And so as a network marketer, now instead of waiting in the parking lots, and I remember I was doing a training in New York in the Empire State Building. I was training some network marketers, yeah, and that and their lunch assignment was to go out and bring back 10 business cards. They were stopping people in the restaurants on the street. Yeah. Now you can have a funeral. You do a post on Facebook or Instagram. You gotta have something that catches people's attention, and their attention span is short now, and boom, you got their attention in the first five seconds.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01They take a look, you offer them something free, you get the free thing. Now they have your email address, your cell phone number, they start communicating with you. So now you can see that your computer, I I have a funnel going for one of my businesses, and I have over the weekend 24 new prospects. And one of the things I offer is a free A or seven ways to make money quickly and AI. Nice. Using AI. Yeah, yeah. So uh if you don't embrace it, you'll be standing, and now then nobody's standing on the corners anymore. People are staying home in droves. And so you must embrace that technology. Totally.
SPEAKER_00Before I let you go, tell us what are you excited about? I mean, you definitely keep yourself busy with all of these amazing initiatives that you have. So talk to me about what you're excited about. What are you looking forward to when you think about the future and what you're doing?
SPEAKER_01Well, my next is to get my message out. Okay. Because somebody has to say to people, number one, that there's greatness within you. Yes. And it's never too late. And even in the current climate of, you know, this um division and insecurity, even this will pass away. Yes, sir. That no matter how dark the night, the sun always rises. Thank you, Lord. And with our people, we've been here before. We've been through all of this before. And so we know that God, good, always prevail us. Amen. It goes in cycles. You see, the universe is there was a movie called O God, and George Burns, one of the old time actors, a young man, was asking him, he said, Well, if you're God, why do these terrible things happen in the world? And and he said, You know, I'm God, but I never could figure out how to create a art without a down. How to create light without darkness. And so this duality always exists. And so to give people heart that even this will pass away, stay the course. Get yourself, make yourself better. Yeah. Get more patient but more understanding, and always be ready to act. Always be ready to take action at the proper time and in the proper vibration. I'm excited about bringing the message to people that say it ain't over till it's over. Yeah, yeah. If you want to stay healthy, you want to stay viable, and change that mindset from how you're supposed to be at 75 or 80 and give you a new vision of yourself, skipping and dipping. I love it.
SPEAKER_00That is a word, Dr. Harris. That is a word, and you are a living example of this. And this is why I'm so grateful that I'm in connection. I'm in proximity to you because this episode has been a blessing to me personally. I can't wait for everyone else to hear it. So I'm so grateful we had this time.
