A Window-Seat Guide To Flying Over The Belize Blue Hole

A perfect circle of deep blue in the middle of the Caribbean Sea sounds unreal until you see it from a window seat. We’re on the ground at San Pedro Airport in Belize, moments from boarding a Tropic Air flight tour to the famous Belize Blue Hole, a vast marine sinkhole set within the Belize Barrier Reef, a protected UNESCO World Heritage site. If you’re planning a Belize holiday and want a high-impact experience that fits into a tight schedule, this short Travel Wise vignette is built to help you decide quickly and travel smarter.

Phil Blizzard talks to Roanne Badillo, Tropic Air’s Director of Sales and Customer Engagement, who walks us through what makes this aerial sightseeing trip special: flying out from San Pedro gives you bonus scenery over smaller islands and reef formations before you even reach the main event. Once you arrive, the captain turns the aircraft on both sides so everyone gets a clean view for photos and video, and you may even spot a nearby shipwreck and Half Moon Caye. It’s a visual feast of shifting blues and greens that you simply can’t understand from sea level.

We also dig into the practical details travellers actually care about, including the small aircraft set-up and why the Blue Hole tour caps passenger numbers so everyone gets a window seat. Plus, if you want to mix reef views with ancient history, we touch on Tropic Air’s Lamanai tour towards Orange Walk, combining a flight with a river journey and time exploring Maya temples.

At San Pedro Airport For Take-off

SPEAKER_03

Breaking travel news from the conference hall, around and about in Belize. I'm at San Pedro Airport. Why? Because I'm going to get on board one of these aircraft for an exciting tour. And to tell us about it and the airline. Hello, what's your name?

SPEAKER_01

My name is Rowani. I'm the director of sales and customer engagement at Tropic Air.

SPEAKER_03

Well, this is a very exciting uh excursion tour. We're going off to one of the iconic uh places to visit in

What You’ll See Over The Blue Hole

SPEAKER_03

Belize. That's right. The Blue Pool.

SPEAKER_01

The Blue Hole.

SPEAKER_03

Blue Hole. That's part of the uh Belize uh barrier reef, isn't it?

SPEAKER_01

That's correct. So it's actually a sinkhole that's in the middle of the ocean. It was an outer water cave that sunk in, so it's a beauty to see from the air.

SPEAKER_03

So, what can we expect to see on the flight from uh San Pedro to the reef?

SPEAKER_01

Okay, so well luckily you're leaving from San Pedro, so you get to fly over some of the smaller islands. Uh you do get to fly over the barrier reef as well. You see some of the attractions along the way until you get to the blue hole. Once you're there, our captain will turn the aircraft on both sides so everybody gets a clear view of the blue hole itself. You'll have super great pictures and videos. After that, you may see as well the shipwreck that's nearby, and there's an island half moon key that's nearby as well, so you may be able to see that as well.

SPEAKER_03

What I'm wondering is that it's a lot of passengers, it's a small aircraft. Does everyone get a window seat?

SPEAKER_01

Everybody gets a window seat. So the aircraft actually holds 14 passengers. For the tour, we only do 11 for that same reason that we want everybody to have a perfect view of the blue hole. So everybody has a window seat.

SPEAKER_03

So that aircraft just arrived. There's another one coming this way, but it is taxing a lot, but it's a very busy airport, isn't it?

SPEAKER_01

It is. It is San Centro, it's one of our busiest airports, so we have multitudes of airplanes coming in through the day. We have flights from the International Airport and the city Paris all coming in through the day. So it's a busy airport.

SPEAKER_03

This aircraft just coming in, it's taxing around, I think, probably taking the next load of passengers there.

SPEAKER_01

Probably will.

SPEAKER_03

So how many aircraft do you have in the fleet?

SPEAKER_01

So we have 15. A little loud. Yes, yes.

SPEAKER_03

So let's uh Right, it's moving up the runway now, so let's uh carry on from that point. Sure. So, how many aircraft in the fleet?

SPEAKER_01

So we have 15 Cesar caravans in our fleet. We are a full caravan fleet.

SPEAKER_03

Okay, well, we're talking about the Blue Hole Tour.

Other Tropic Air Tours And Tips

SPEAKER_03

What other tours and excursions and destinations do you operate to?

SPEAKER_01

So we do offer the Lamanai tour as well. So that is one of the Maya temples located in the Orange Walk district. So that the aircraft also leaves from San Pedro, heads over to Orange Walk. You do have a river tour until you get to the temple. You have a little hike, of course, you get to have lunch at the temple, you can climb and explore, and then you're back out here by 2 2 30 in the afternoon.

SPEAKER_03

Okay, what advice have you got for people who want to go onto one of the tours? The blue hole is so popular, I guess.

SPEAKER_01

So the blue hole, really and truly, it's an amazing sight to see. It's a one-of-a-kind sight. Um I've I've seen it many times from I was a little girl, but on a boat, it's a very different experience when you see it from the air. It's very beautiful, you get to see different shades of blues and greens of the sea, you get to see the reefs, and it's actually something that you can't really see anywhere else. So I would suggest that everybody do it once you're hearing Belize.

SPEAKER_03

I can't wait to get over there and get some really good uh video clips for our viewers also.

SPEAKER_01

I hope you have a great time.

SPEAKER_03

Breaking travel news. I'll tell you what, can you do something for me? I've been talking to you. Can you just hold this around so I can say something to the camera? That's it. Am I in the picture? I'm looking forward to this so much. Remember, if you're coming to Belize here in the Caribbean, this is one trip you've got to go on. And hopefully, after we take it off and get over the blue hole, I'll be able to show you on video what it's actually like. I'm Phil Blizzard from Breaking Travel News London here in Belize.
