SPEAKER_02

Hello, and welcome to the third episode of Som and Summer. I am Floyd. And I am Aaron. And today we're going to talk about what supplies, meaning wine, spirits, beer, would you have stocked up if you were locked in your house? You couldn't go out. You couldn't go to a movie theater. Couldn't go anywhere. What would you need to have stocked up in your house in order to survive?

SPEAKER_01

On that note, Floyd, you look a little feverish.

SPEAKER_02

Well, I did just uh, you know, sniffle and cough everything into the microphone, so you know, before we recorded. So that is gonna be our topic for today. We're gonna talk about that and we're gonna try to get down to what do you need to have in your house to survive? Just for sanity purposes, not like, you know, there's zombies running around.

SPEAKER_01

No, we're not talking about Purell or toilet.

SPEAKER_02

No, we're not talking about that stuff. We're talking about what do you need when it comes to either wine, beer, spirits. What would you need to have in order to survive this lockdown that we're going through right now? So do you want me to start or do you want to start, Aaron? Because I have an idea. I know what I know what I would do. But I'm gonna hear. No, no, no. I think I think you should go first, because I always talk first. You can't spend the entire episode going back and forth on a socialist.

SPEAKER_01

Can't triple stamp a double stamp. The first thing I'm gonna say is Heineken. Heineken. Heineken. A 12 pack at least.

SPEAKER_02

So Heineken.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Got you. So you would start off with you have to have Heineken in your house, stocked up, ready to go. Yes. And I'll tell you why.

SPEAKER_01

It's not thin like.

SPEAKER_02

Because it's one it I wouldn't have that in my house. There's no way I would have Heineken.

SPEAKER_01

I don't know what your problem is. Are you a racist?

SPEAKER_02

I'm not a racist. I'm a Heinekenist. I just won't have Heineken.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, so what's your problem with Heineken?

SPEAKER_02

I I'm just not a big fan. I think it just has an aftertaste that just I I just don't agree with. It's like anything Heineken, Heineken light, anything like that. I just there's this aftertaste that gets me that I just can't drink it.

SPEAKER_01

I was in the craft beer scene for a hot minute, and I don't know. I kind of got over it really fast because I think that a lot of these double, triple hopped IPAs are just a little bit too much. Same time, Coors Light, Bud Light, Miller Light, they're just no character. They're flooding the market. They're everywhere. They're flooding the market. I call them beer chip. I mean, sorry, whiskey chasers. Kind of like you have a shot of uh Jameson, you have a shot of tequila, and then you have a Bud Light or Miller Light. Heineken's nice because you sip at it, it's got a little bit of like a distinct profile to it. I'm not saying it's the wine drinker's beer or the Scotch drinker's beer, but I I would go with that as my go-to beer during a lockdown.

SPEAKER_02

See, I I'm totally into Guinness. Guinness would be the one thing I would say. You know what? I have to have Guinness stocked up. I have to make sure I have it. It's something that to me is refreshing. It's light. It's breakfast. But a lot of people say it's heavy. It's too heavy for them. They come out of the house.

SPEAKER_01

Oh no, you have that with some eggs and some bacon, you have an Irish breakfast.

SPEAKER_02

Well, I I just think people have this wrong image of Guinness. Like, with everything that was going on in Jersey and around the country, like I said, you know what? I'm gonna stock up with some some beer. And I went and I bought Guinness, and I bought their blonde Guinness. So I was like, I'm gonna have at least Guinness in the house. How's the blonde? Haven't had it yet. I've never had the blonde in in my entire life. I've never had it, never tried it, never thought about trying it. I've always had regular Guinness, and that was it. Um, so this time I said, you know, I'm gonna buy the blonde and see how that goes, and if I really like it, if I wanna and I and now everything with Guinness is like four packs, you know, the ones that you crack open and you pour the cans. So I think Guinness would probably be my beer of choice. I I I agree with you. I think everything is hoppy IPAs. Everything is like an IPA, an IPA with this, an IPA with that. I think we're flooded over, we're saturated with IPAs.

SPEAKER_01

We're saturated with this whole idea of it's gotta be craft, it's gotta be something I haven't had any f before. You know, people don't know how to have just like a good ale or a good lager. They have to have like Pop Tart, like it's gotta be, it's gotta be something inventive or creative, but like beer should just be beer.

SPEAKER_02

It should be. It's exactly. I appreciate like PBR, Pap's Blue Ribbon. I appreciate beers like that.

SPEAKER_01

It's like paint thinner to me, man.

SPEAKER_02

To me, it's like I can go to a dive bar and have PBR all day. I love it. It's just beer to me should be inexpensive and should just be cheap. Like that uh like how I talk about wine, like where wine shouldn't be cheap, it should be the opposite. Like beer to me is craziness because it's like four packs for like $18.99 of like this IPA that's made with like um you know, cinnamon and eggs. I think I smell cinnamon and eggs, but it's it's like everything that I see now on the market just drives me crazy because it's just plums, peach, you know, cinnamon, you know, eggnog. It's like all these crazy flavors that go into these beers now that you're defeating the purpose of beer. It's like when I first met you and I talked to you, I said, How do you have your coffee? And you were like, Black. Black.

SPEAKER_01

Why? Always but why? Because coffee's coffee, man. You shouldn't have uh you shouldn't have all these crazy flavors in the morning. You shouldn't have whipped cream and nutmeg and maple syrup and cinnamon all in your coffee at once. But does that dis for you, does that destroy the flavor? Yeah, of course it does. Coffee should be just the beans. You should get the best expression of the beans. It's like we talk about wine all the time. It should just be wine, it shouldn't be wine aged in fucking bourbon barrels. I hate that. I hate that. So I think that what we're talking about are just staples here. Like, if you want a good staple beer, yours is Guinness, mine is Heineken. So let's let's let's go on to the first time. In a time of crisis, yes.

SPEAKER_02

Like in a time of where I can't go anywhere, I need to have it in my house, I'm not going out. Perfect time.

SPEAKER_01

So, what's one of your go-to spirits after that? Let's just say that you uh I don't know. You've done your reading, you've done your uh internet search list, whatever that may be, you've done your cleaning and your chores for the day, you've gotten out to the park, you're back in your quarantined home. Yeah, you need that stiff drink.

SPEAKER_02

What are you having? I think one of the drinks that I definitely would try to say everybody should get a bottle of it is Cody Road. What we're drinking now, actually. We we opened a bottle of Cody Road, it's a bourbon, um, and we popped it open, we poured ourselves a glass, we're drinking it now as we talk to you guys. I think that's a solid bourbon. It's really good. I I don't like the bottle, it's old, it looks like a saloon bottle. You know I love shitting on your recommendations. Uh most of the time, yes. When it comes to when it comes to this is really good, really good. Yes, but that's because now you're a bourbon person.

SPEAKER_01

Like you weren't before. No, no, no, no. If you blind poured this from me, I would know it's bourbon, yeah, but it's almost got like this versatile taste to it. It's not like a sweet stuff.

SPEAKER_02

It's no mellow corn, but it is shut up, it's really solid, but it's a really solid bourbon, and I think for the price, it's really good. So it's something we just open right now, we're drinking as we talk to you guys, but it's a bourbon that just has a lot of character. Like I said, I think the bottle is the only thing that throws me off, but I think what's inside the bottle is just really good stuff, and that's what we're talking about now. I think if I was to pick a spirit that I would need to have in my house, it definitely would have to be like a scotch or it's gonna be a bourbon whiskey. One or the other. Tequila, I know tequilas are big now. I know they're getting a big reputation, they're like the new, you know, put a cube in it, drink it. But I would say something more on that bourbon, that scotch side, I I definitely would go with. My problem is I can't pick just one. I'm a person that just loves to drink something good. Like I know if I tried something, I might go back to it, but I might try something different. So I'm not a person that has a specific one. So I'm very, I'm very, I'm very open to things. So I couldn't have one specific. What about Bombay Sapphire? I can't drink gin. Oh god, you're one of those people? I I I just to me that juniper just overdoes it.

SPEAKER_01

Let me guess, you had a bad experience with it years ago.

SPEAKER_02

No, I it's not a bad I've had more, I've had worse experiences with tequila. And I I drink tequila now, like by the by the glass with a cube. Like I gin to me, I just don't like that juniper floral flavor. I it's just something about that that note. It's more of that. It's like it's just something I don't agree with. I don't like, but if like if I was to have a martini, it would be a vodka martini. It wouldn't be a gin martini, it would be a vodka martini. Gin, just to me, is just something I just never really latched on to. A lot of people like gin. I just I have not been that person.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, so so far we got Floyd's got Guinness, Cody Rhodes bourbon, not scotch, bourbon. Yeah, bourbon. And he's got some vodka.

unknown

Okay.

SPEAKER_01

Martinis. I would definitely have a bottle of vodka to make martinis. Okay, so I have my bottle of Bombay Sapphire. I'm kind of undecided. I I Cody Rhodes' a really good option because honestly, you said, what, 30 bucks you paid for this?

SPEAKER_02

Like 30, 35, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Decent bourbon starts at $30. This this I would have guessed $40, $45. I would have said the same thing for just blind tasting. And uh I would go with Heineken just because you know I think it's just a good go-to to have during the day. Um what else? Give me a wild card. Because remember, you don't know how long we're gonna be stuck. No, but you wait a minute, wait, wait, wait, wait. Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.

SPEAKER_02

So I've given you a beer and a spirit. You've given me a beer, and where would you go?

SPEAKER_01

In terms of just to be clear, we're not talking about toilet paper, pure elle, or food or water, right? No, we're talking about it.

SPEAKER_02

We're talking about the essentials. We're talking about the essentials. Like see, and just to give the you know, the people listening out there a little uh detail, and Aaron is single, I'm married with two kids. So when I'm trapped in my house, I need to wife too. And so yeah, I I need to have the necessities. So you need to have spirits, you need to have wine, you need to have beer, you need to have it all. With food, but you need to have all that stuff. Just a you're trapped in a house, you're not going anywhere, you need those essentials. Aaron's gonna look at it very differently because it's it's Aaron and just Aaron. Yeah, I gotta I gotta seduce myself.

SPEAKER_01

I gotta talk to myself, so I gotta get even stronger stuff to make it worse. Would you put in the glass with a couple of cubes? Alright, so this is my question. Are we working off a budget here? Or are we saying that like somehow we just emptied our bank accounts or we extended our credit lines and we're just we're just you know, again, the essentials.

SPEAKER_02

I would say, look, if you were going out shopping, let's say it was like, you know, they said you have to be in your house by Wednesday, it's Tuesday. What would you do? What would you grab going to the store? Let's say you're on a budget, let's say you're not, just anything. Like I know if I was going out one.

SPEAKER_01

I want one really good wine. All right. One really good wine. And I feel like I'd spend up to a hundred bucks for it. For me. I feel like I would get Camus. And I know that sounds like a cop-out thing that you probably never hear me say because I'm a Bordeaux freak. Yeah. But Caemas. Because it'd be my way of kind of thinking, I'm treating myself, it's a it's one of Napa's great cabernets, and it's that excuse to grill a steak. That's one way I'd go.

SPEAKER_02

Alright, so that would be that would be like my specialty. That would be your specialty idea. Exactly. If you're shopping for three things. Because at first when we talked about this, we were like, oh, what do you what what what should we talk about? Should it be one specific thing? Like it should it be. Oh, we're talking about stocking up. Exactly. So we were uh initially thinking about like, should it be just like a wine, a spirit, a beer, or it should be like a bunch of different things. So I think we're talking like, okay, we need to stock up. So Aaron has his wine, his beer. So where would you go next?

SPEAKER_01

You got that hundred, you got that expensive bottle of wine. I just hope that by the time that we actually have people listening to us, if they haven't already, like, you know, I think people have slit their throats.

SPEAKER_02

They're gonna have enough, they're gonna people are gonna have enough time.

unknown

Okay.

SPEAKER_01

But uh but I I I think that you know, write these things down. Yeah, this is a shopping list. You know? Kahlua.

SPEAKER_02

Alright, so you want Kahlua, so you're making mixed drinks. You're doing it all by yourself. So you're hunkered down, you're watching TV making mixed drinks. I'm looking at myself in the mirror. While I'm shaking a martini glass, I'm making a martini, pouring in my glass, you're actually making a Kahua. Shaking a martini. That sounds like a lot of work. Well, shaking a martini is good. I don't like it stirred, you know. Okay.

SPEAKER_01

But where where the way, uh that movie is being pushed out to the fall.

SPEAKER_02

I think every movie. I think even Black Widow, they said they were gonna push back.

SPEAKER_01

Rise of Skywalker, the best movie to come out. They actually uh released that early, and Frozen 2's out early on uh. I don't watch Frozen 2. I was about to say that. Yes, you do.

SPEAKER_00

I was about to say that. I did not watch that movie. You were looking forward to Frozen 2. I know I was. I am a Frozen 2 aficionado.

SPEAKER_02

I have a daughter, so we definitely were gonna watch Frozen 2 tonight. Yeah. So that was one of our things. But me and my imaginary date at home are gonna be watching Frozen 2 with a bottle of Kahlua.

SPEAKER_01

Kahlua straight. And some spaghettios.

SPEAKER_02

And Purel. See, so like I would have like I would have that Guinness, right? So the Guinness would be my beer option. If I was to have a wine, this is what I always, there's this little thing in me that always says, okay, I'm trapped inside. What am I gonna eat? Am I gonna eat a lot of like meat dishes during this time? Am I gonna eat a lot of like fish? This, that, this. Fish, obviously, you have to get it fresh. You don't want to really store that too long, so fish is not really an option. So whites kind of a little bit go out the door. But I think reds. Like, I'm totally going Pinot Noir or wine right now. We're talking about wine right now. If I because I already said I would have Guinness as my beer option, what would I have as my wine option? I think I would go cabs and pinot noirs. I think Pinot Noir is like, look, I can go sit outside. I'm avoiding going to big, you know, places that are just like infested with people. So if I was just to go outside, hang out, get a you know, some fresh air, I would have a glass of Pinot Noir. But later that night, if I'm making some some food, making pasta, anything with some meat, I'm definitely bringing out a cab. So I would definitely have to have a cab with a Pinot Noir. Just or at least like a whole set of those things to make sure that you know what, that's the right option. It's gonna go with all the food I have that I stocked up on. So I would always go with those options. So it's always tough to kind of like really bring it to like that solid middle point. But I think that I would definitely have to have like a Pinot Noir and a cab. Definitely to drink if I'm stocked up ready for this, whatever's coming, that I gotta be trapped at home and locked in.

SPEAKER_01

So far, I feel like we've tackled half a shelf. Seriously. Alright. Again, end of times. End of times is different. No, man, coronavirus, it's gonna get you. Are we talking walking dead? Walking dead, that's totally different. No, no. I think we're talking about two to four weeks. A lot can happen in two to four weeks.

SPEAKER_02

A lot more cabs and a lot more Pinot Noir.

SPEAKER_01

I got me, myself, and I think about lockdown. Um I think you gotta get one bottle of bubbly.

SPEAKER_02

See, I'm not a big bubbly person. I don't I don't drink a lot of champagne per seco. I don't have it. Is your wife? No, she's not. She's not a she's not a white wine drinker. She doesn't drink a lot of white wines. She's not gonna want to have one celebratory. Like maybe celebrating.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, this is the last day of quarantine. We gotta have this.

SPEAKER_02

No, not celebratory. I would have whites, but more for the fact that if I'm just hanging out outside. I think it's to me, it's like if I'm having something that goes with white wine, or if I'm just gonna sit outside and have a just sit outside on a chair, beautiful day, I'm gonna have a white wine. Or rose if it was rose season. But to me, at this point, if I'm locked down, it's all reds because I figure, look, you're inside, what are you making for dinner? What are you doing for that night? I would stock up on reds. I definitely would. I I know myself, I know my wife only drinks reds.

SPEAKER_01

I would focus on Chianti's, I would focus on uh Rioja's. For sure.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, but as you know, I'm not a big Cabernet, though, like it's a little bit. See, but Italian wines, you know me in Italian wines. It's too dry for me. It's way too dry. What do you cook? On the reg. I do a lot of like, you know, if we have pasta with meatballs, and I know Chianti's really should go with like pasta sauces because of that same flavor profile. But I'm just a cabernet drinker. I'm just a person that likes Cabernets and likes drinking them. I just think they're just they're more versatile to me versus like Chianti's. But that's like I said, that's my way of thinking. I like Cabernets, I like those oaky, I like that, you know, cigar box, I like that dark cherry.

SPEAKER_01

But that's not versatile to me, though. That's special. That's like that to me is like if you're making steak dinner. Like if you're making like that special lamb shot. No, but I'm saying if you're making lamb, if you're making duck, I I don't really make duck, but I'm saying making steak. Hold on for a second. Let me go make some duck. I'm gonna make some duck and come right back. But I'm thinking like you gotta have these everydays that are like the blends, the chiantes, the riojas.

SPEAKER_02

Definitely blends, riojas are totally see. I think that's my style. I think my style is leaning towards like the Riojas, because they're kind of similar to Cabs, but they're not, but they're similar in some profiles. Blends, Bordeaux blends, like those are like my wines that I always pick. Picking like a chianti is like never my top choice. It's more of like, alright, we're gonna have some pasta with some tomato sauce, I'm gonna make some eggplant, throw it in there with some zucchini, some vegetables. You know, if if I was having Sunday gravy as they call it, I would have like, you know, a chianti.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

But it's like I don't eat most of those dishes, so to me it's kind of like I really wouldn't be my first choice.

SPEAKER_01

So for me, on a regular basis, if I'm stuck in quarantine, if I don't feel like actually cooking, you know, I got kid cuisine in my freezer, and I'll have that with some, you know, cocktail or a beer. If I want to go and say, listen, you know, gotta keep my mind going and make something really good, yeah, I make Sunday sauce. I make uh the what, the uh Brajol.

SPEAKER_02

Brajol is it like you throw brijol?

SPEAKER_01

It's uh it's like a plethora of like But if I'm making something like that, I'm having like the everyday Chianti. Yeah, for me, it's like if you could ask me to have one go-to wine in the house during this time, it would probably be Chianti.

SPEAKER_02

Wow. See, I I never would do that.

SPEAKER_01

Like I this is these are emergency times.

SPEAKER_02

We are living in a strange way. Emergency times for me, it's cabs. It's you gotta have cabs, you gotta have Pinot Noirs, you gotta be stocked. You're fancier than I am. Well, you gotta have something light and you gotta have something heavy. Like, I'm always thinking like that. I know during the day, because it's five o'clock anywhere, it's drinking time anywhere, at five o'clock, Pinot Noir. Start out the day Pinot Noir. At the end of the night, have a nice meat dish, get a cab. Chianti's to me, like I said, is just it's so earthy. It just it it's I need more time to cook something that goes with it.

SPEAKER_01

Alright, so we're running out of time, but I think that let's wrap up with that one.

SPEAKER_02

Why are you trying to kill the show? We have plenty of time. You don't want to talk anymore about the apocalypse? Scary. It's scary. You're just trying to go home.

SPEAKER_01

No, it's trying to go home before you cough in my face, bro. No, that one last specialty thing. I'm not talking about wine. I'm not talking about a tur certain kind of beer, but I'm saying what's that one special offbeat thing that you'd have in your stock?

SPEAKER_02

You have to give me a little bit more time. Well, apparently we have enough time. We have plenty of time, but I have to think about it. So let me ask you that question. So let's reverse it. You answer that question.

SPEAKER_01

We've covered some staples.

SPEAKER_02

So you got your you got Caemas. I think that was like your major thing. You said like that's my stake. But what's but what is your like one thing? And as you describe that, I will look deeply into your eyes as you discuss and get that out of your point. And as you are talking, I will figure out what I would say. Okay.

SPEAKER_01

So I'll throw one more wild card in there. Oh, no more wild cards. Oh wild. We gotta get you out of the house. Dark rum. Without getting too graphic, some of the best times I've had when I've been snowed in or trapped in. You know, again, let's by yourself. Let's pretend somebody else was there. By yourself. Let's call her Agnes.

SPEAKER_00

That's good. I like that. By yourself.

SPEAKER_01

You like that. I like I like that. Dark rum. Dark rum. You can mix it with Coke, like Coca-Cola. Yeah. By itself. See, I Floyd's thinking anything.

SPEAKER_02

No, no. I see to me I would just Good dark rum. Yeah. See, I wouldn't see dark rum. I my college drink was rum and cokes. So like as I got older, I went so far away from rum, like rum. I just went away. It was like my drink of choice back in college. Everything was rum. Anytime I went to a bar, rum and coke. Anytime I went to this place, rum and coke. So as I graduated and got older, it just got more, you know, more sophisticated in a way. Like it was just like, okay, what are we drinking tonight? Oh, we're gonna drink uh, let's have a glass of scotch at the end of the night. Let's have a glass of uh, you know, some Irish whiskey, something. And I think now if I was to have a solid spirit, I definitely would have to have vodka because I'm a martini drinker. I would definitely have to have kettle one. Because I I honestly I think I I just like kettle one. Like I would have to have kettle one because I would have to make a martini. I know myself and I would have to have a gallon of olive juice because I like dirty martinis. That would probably be like my one spirit that I would have to keep in the house and make sure that I'm totally stocked up on.

SPEAKER_01

Okay.

SPEAKER_02

I would definitely have to have, like I said, Pinot Noir Cabernets for wines stocked up, and goodness for beer. It's those are like that would be my necessity. And I and I'm talking as somebody that would have to share the wine with the wife. So I would have to say, I need enough wine for me and my wife.

SPEAKER_01

So she's a Pinot Noir, and she's I do socialize with other human beings beyond this podcast, by the way.

SPEAKER_02

Just making sure. We're not just talking about stuffed animals after your last story. You're like, oh, you know, it's trapped inside my house. Yeah. This uh little doll that I share my wine with. I have to have rum. So I it's just there's too many things to drink and there's too many things to think about. So when people go to like it's interesting when you go to uh let's say a liquor store and you see what people are buying in a time of crisis. What do people buy? What are people going for? And it is so interesting to see shopping habits from people because I know when I went, I didn't see a lot of you know, like wine. I saw a lot of beer. Beer was moving nonstop. And I was very shocked because I was like, oh, you know, I would stock up on wine. There's this wine, there's that one. There's so much wine. Right. Everybody was stocking up on beer. And I I don't know if it's more of like it's an affordability thing, but everybody had to have their beer. Corona was flying out the door despite everything with Corona. But that was flying out. Can't say Corona anymore. Can't say COVID-19. You're a xenophobe. Yeah, exactly. Got the woo-fluo. You're woke. That's what it is. But um can't have corona anymore. But to end it Modello sales must be skyrocketing. I would have to say modellos is up there because nobody's gonna touch Corona. But to on a to end it on a uh positive note, I think that despite everything that's going on, I think that we are just trying to make a positive way of looking at everything. Trying to distract yourself. Just trying to distract you, guys, from what's going on.

SPEAKER_01

You can't play Candyland and Monopoly sober. Exactly.

SPEAKER_02

And you can't watch Frozen 2, you know, the whole weekend.

SPEAKER_01

I can watch Frozen 2 all day long, Floyd.

SPEAKER_02

With a glass of rum. But I think that's what's great is like, you know what, despite everything that's going on, right? What do we all have in common? And it's, you know, a time to think about, you know, some good things that are going on. We're all gonna be with our family, all gonna be with our friends. And what spirits, what wine, me with my imaginary friends, you with your imaginary friend. But me with my family trapped in here. So we're we're trying to make light of a you know a situation, but I think there's some really cool things out there for people to look at before they hunker down and you know, stay in their house for like I think it's like two weeks. I think everybody's gonna be doing two years. But I think wine is great to have, and my recommendations would be cab Pinot Noir for wine. I think if you're doing a spirit, make sure you, if you're a martini person, have that vodka ready, and then have a bottle of you know your go-to bourbon or scotch. I think it's it's a solid way to go just to kind of close out a night. And then for beer, for me, I like Guinness and I think it's great.

And I know Aaron has a yeah, I'm not gonna I'm not gonna repeat all my picks like Floyd didn't, um, but I will say that uh this Cody Road, which Floyd does not sell. So I'm thinking about selling it. No, remember that was we we talk about this though. Floyd is not shamelessly just pumping his own products. Cody Road is something he does not yet put on his shelves. And I will say, it is a quality bourbon for the price. I mean, you think about most bourbons, there's a grace between 35 to 50 bucks for really good quality. 30 bucks. Not bad. I like it a lot.
