Hello and welcome to the HOTLCast.

Good morning.

Sorry, that was my gula, or afternoon, or

whenever you're listening to this, or evening.

Yeah. Do you know, we're almost at 10,000 listens on this podcast.

Nice.

Yeah, it's good. I don't know why that matters, but I noticed that the other day.

That's neat. Yeah, actually

it's cool.

So, um, yeah, we have guests here. Oh, this is Cyle. I should say who I am. This

is Matt. This is Mark,

uh, this is Ryan. And Ryan is preaching Sunday at the Jackson campus.

Yes,

he is at 10:30 AM You should go listen to him. I mean, you're gonna listen to him. He'll listen to him.

Well, he won't. No, he won't. He won't be there.

Yeah.

Mark's getting married.

Yep. Yep. I'll be married.

You, you will be. Yeah. You're getting married tomorrow. He's getting hitched, so, yep. Mark's not gonna be at church Sunday, so, um, so Ryan's preaching, Matt will be there at Jackson. I'll be in Brooklyn preaching, but we have a kids program Sunday, so I'm excited.

So yeah,

I get to preach, uh, well for

the two, two of the services, two of the kids program services.

Yeah. So we're, we're excited about that. But lots going on. It's Christmas. I was just in New Orleans, uh, or Nolins. Yeah. Did you know what it's called? S Lins. Nas Nolins.

I have never heard that before.

Nolins.

Well, that's what they, they call it Nolins. So yeah. I went and saw, I, so I, there's a thing in life I hate and it's parades. I really don't like parades. They're the most boring. It's like hunting for me.

Oh, come on. I love a parade.

Yeah. So, but they're, they're boring. And uh, I went and watched an hour and 45 minute parade and I enjoyed every bit of it.

So I realized why I like parades and why I don't like parades.

Well, in New Orleans though, the food is incredible while you're standing there watching a parade though, too.

Nope. No food while I was watching parade.

Really?

Yeah. You're just standing on the street. But here's what I like about parades now.

Free stuff. They give free stuff. Are we talking

about beads or No?

Beads. Cups. They give so much stuff free. Everything gave away free stuff. And you know how like here, um, they don't let us even give away candy. Like you can, you have to hand it to people. They chuck the stuff into trees, they chuck it on the road, and watching the cleanup from the parade was just as much fun as watching the parade.

It was chaos. They were whipping around with the, the, the scrubbers on the streets flying around. Two of them like doing EYs. And then people are coming with like, um, uh, what do they call 'em? The air guns.

Like a leaf blower

or something. Leaf blowers. They got leaf blowers, like huge leaf blowers, just blowing stuff into the street.

They're blowing beads and cups and uh, you know, whatever was thrown off the, the footballs. And then you've got people coming up, scooping it, and then they're just, you know, doing whatever they can. They, they're cleaning it up so fast, but there were. Thousands and thousands and thousands of beads laying in the streets.

Oh my goodness. Because if they hit the ground, they bust. So nobody, nobody picks 'em up. Yeah. So they were just, and they're hanging from trees and they cleaned it up so fast at this hour and 45 minute prey. But I, we got beads, I got cups, I got stickers. I got, uh, they gave, like, they give away candy, but I don't want any candy.

Um, and it just was really cool. We got footballs, we got little rubber ducks like for the Jeep Ducks. We got all kinds of stuff, but they were just, they were giving away like Santa hats. And you just name it. It was like, this is, this stuff's expensive, they're giving away. So I was having a blast. So, but nobody wants to give it to me because I was just staying there with carver's.

Like all the kids around me were just getting all the, all the cool, really cool stuff. Like, come on, give me the cool stuff. They didn't give me any cool stuff. I was around to be kids, but I had a great time and, and, and, and Nolins. Yeah. I don't know that I'll ever go back, but. It was an interesting time.

I've not been there, but I've heard that the food in that area is incredible. The food was incredible. Yeah.

I don't, so I don't like grits either, but I had the best shrimp and grits I've ever had in my life, and now I will eat grits because I've never had something so tasty.

Now are you like a jumbo or gumbo fan?

I had

jambalaya and red beans. Uh, didn't have any gumbo. Just we were out of time to try everything.

Yeah.

Um, carver and I would get order something different and then split it.

Okay.

So that was kind of, that's a solid plan. So we could try both things. Yeah, because there's a lot to try. We didn't do oysters or gumbo, but we did crawfish, we did all kinds of stuff.

So it was, it was fun.

That does sound

like fun. I wasn't there that long, so I didn't have time to eat everything.

How long were you there?

Uh, three days.

Okay.

Had a lot of beignets though.

What's a beye? Three

beignets a day. Keeps the doctor away.

What is a beignet?

I not sure that's right. It's probably the opposite.

It's, it's a donut. Oh. It's a very powdery donut. Oh, covered in powdered sugar. I was gonna bring some beignets back for you guys, and I, I was gonna like stick 'em in my, my carryon and car was like, I don't think you should do that with all that powdered sugar. I'm like, yeah, they would think that's, that's cocaine.

So that's all I need to get arrested at the airport for bringing in, I mean, racks or cocaine. You

would totally be on the flight and be like, you know, mark doesn't really need one. And then that one's gone. And then Matt doesn't really want one and he'll eat that one too.

Here's the, here's the funniest thing about the

news.

Cody doesn't need one,

so. We had extra beignets from the night before. 'cause what, for whatever reason, the conference I was at, you got a $10 credit at the hotel every day. So you spend it or you lose it. So I'm like, I'm spending it, I'm gonna spend every bit of that $10. Uh, but everything in the store was like really expensive, so it was always like $15 to spend the $10.

So I'm one of those people. But they sold beignets. So we got beignets like at night 'cause we wanted to spend our $10. We ate half of 'em had 'em in the morning. So I ate two of them for breakfast and then we went and got beignets and coffee before we leave. And I'm like, Carver, let's just order one thing of beignets and we'll split it so we have, 'cause I had beignets, so like Carver said, sure, whatever.

And uh, he thought I ate his beignets and my beignets in the hotel. He is like, and you're, and you're eating half the beignet. I ate one Benet and he got two. And so the whole time he's sitting there thinking. He all those beignets in the hotel and now he's eating my bi, one of my benets. And we get back to the hotel and I was like, Hey, finish your beignets from last night.

He's like, I thought you ate all those. He said the whole thing at breakfast. He was just sitting there mad thinking I was, I ate all the beignets. So the parade,

they really need to be throwing out insulin. It's really what it sounds like. Yeah. Benets. I goodness you need some

insulin for beignets. But it

was good.

But I do, I'm, I'm a fan of Beignets now. I really am so and chicory and my coffee. Have you ever had chicory in your coffee?

I don't even know what that is. Chicory

is a root. What about you? I don't drink coffee. You

like chew on it as you're drinking it or

no? No, it's just, it's, it's in the coffee. They were poor and GNAs.

So, so like they ground it up like they mixed ground root and with the coffee to like, oh. To like double it.

I'm just imagining like an entire, like plant root just dropped right into a couple. No, no, it's like, it was like two because they didn't have the money to buy

all the coffee. So like, but as long as you really tasty.

We enjoyed it. So Yeah. But Cafe Dumond sells chicory coffee. So that's my new GNAs experience. Food, and I prayed.

Yeah. And not enough free stuff.

Oh no. I got lots of free stuff because I went to conference too, and the conference expo. Oh, gotcha. So I got free stuff at the parade. Free stuff at the expo.

Then I found a lot of free samples.

What was your best thing that you got to bring home? From the conference, anything, anything in the free stuff that you got was, what was the best? Oh,

I didn't bring, I ate everything. That was free. Free. I got lots of beads, which, uh, those were cool. Um, I would say we got a little, I think the football, we got a little, little mini football that was like.

Mardi Gras collars. It was kind of cool. Nice.

Honestly, if Kyle walked away from an event and he's like, I got a free car, I would not be surprised, like if he just like managed it. Yeah. I won an iPad one time

at a pastor's conference. Oh wow.

Yeah. Yeah, you did. I remember that. Yeah. Yep. I did sign up for a lot of free stuff.

But then I made Carver sign up. I like sign up for the Amazon gift card. So you get two of them. He's just signing up. He doesn't, I don't think he realizes yet. He's gonna be just blitzed with email. They're like, why do you wanna sign up? I said, nah, he signed up. We're good. So he's gonna have so many emails this week.

Oh my goodness. Yeah. He's gonna be like, dad, I can't believe you did that to me. I was like, ah, you gotta learn. Don't sign up for those things.

That's why you need to have a dedicated email address just for that stuff. Yeah, that's

right. Yeah. So that's, that was the fun part of it. But we had a good time. We went, I went to a camp conference.

It was really just a ministry conference, really was great. Um, just connected, got some, some ideas, um, some leadership ideas were really cool. So more, more coming on that soon. But, uh, I'm back. And so Cody preached this week at, at, uh, Brooklyn. And you preached at Jackson? I did, yeah. So, and now this week Ryan's preaching.

So Ryan, can you give us like, uh, a little like. Um,

teaser trailer teaser. Something teaser.

Yeah.

Oh man, I don't wanna spoil it for everybody.

Old Testament or New Testament?

Uh, new Testament for most part New Testament. Um, yeah, no, just, uh, you know, I mean, a, a lot of kinda what I've been been thinking about studying on kind of wrestling with is just this idea of slowing down.

Right? You know, the, the idea that when we, when we really look at Jesus, we see that he is. Always has somebody pushing him to go somewhere.

Right.

But he's always stopping helping people along the way and he always gets where he is going.

So, yeah, that's true.

You know, so that's kinda what we're looking at.

So

slow down. Yeah. Smell the roses. See the people.

Yeah.

Yeah, that's good. Oh, that'll be fun. Hopefully we, if you want to go listen to Ryan, if you know who Ryan is, if you don't know who Ryan is, he'll be at 10 30 preaching at the Jackson campus. Go. Go this Sunday. If you listen to this many months later, then uh, it's, it'll be online on Facebook.

That's true. You can go back on, what is the date? Sunday? Um, the 14th. 14th, um, 12 14 25. So if you listen to this later, 'cause a lot of people do live into it later.

Well, it'll be the Oh, that's right. It'll on Hot Jackson Facebook page. Yeah. Yeah.

Do you guys put out YouTube too? No. No.

Just on Facebook. Right now.

On

Facebook. You had like nine hour reviews, like a week or two ago. What was that? Oh, did we? I think, I think so. Oh, wow. I was in, I was in Nolins watching, watching along.

And any excuse you can come up with to say Nolins?

It was, I was, but I, I was pretty sure you guys had like, maybe it was like six interviews, but it was a lot.

I was like, oh, cool, you guys have to check. But now that, that's good. I mean, we're growing, so that's awesome. And we, we had, let's talk about the, uh, Christmas party. We had 200 people here at a Christmas party. It was awesome.

Most of them, like over half, were new to Heart of the Lakes. I, I love it. Like this was their first Christmas party with Hoddle.

It was the best one ever. And I, I know I've said the last couple years, but they have just gotten better every year. But this one was great. Yeah, I was super smart. Country theme was fun. The, the skit was, oh my goodness. Hilarious. Yeah. So funny.

It was a blast. So

funny. Did you watch it on Sunday night for the youth group?

Uh, we did it for the youth group. Yeah. Did the same group we ran, we ran through it all again. Was it just as funny? Yeah, the kids had a fun, they didn't laugh as much, but they had uh, just as much fun. They

probably didn't get a lot the jokes.

Yeah. Probably not. Yeah, but it was a lot of fun. They had their whole skit where they did the competition to see who could prance around the fanciest from the students.

Yeah. So it was, it was really funny. The Judah was the one that got like, that, like fell off the stage for the one at youth group and he, like, he, he rolled down the stage. I thought he was gonna hurt himself. Yeah. He like full sent it. He accidentally went twice. 'cause he went too soon in the skit. Yeah. So we had to like call him back on stage and tell him, no, that's funny.

You gotta, you gotta do that later. Not yet. Which made it played into the skit. So.

Well, if you miss the Christmas party, it is always this first Friday of December. So put it in your calendar. You don't wanna miss it. It's fun. There's, if you don't like dancing, you don't have to dance. There's dancing at the end.

Some people go home, some people stay. And we did kind of like. The electric slide and the Chacha slide and it's fun. Just a good time to be church family. It's a couple hours. We do a gift exchange, have some just conversation. Get to meet new people. Here's the fun part. There were so many people there, like I've seen people's posts afterwards.

I'm like, I didn't see them at the, and I went to every table. Yeah. And I didn't. I was like, I didn't see everybody that was there. 'cause I was like that. I didn't see that person. I didn't see, so that's just how many people there were. It was really fun to just see where we've gone to and grown to as a church and what God's doing and seeing all the people that were there and having a good time.

So

I love the way they did the signing of the tables too. It was completely random where you would walk in and if your party was only two people, you know, you would draw this number and then you'd be sitting with. Whomever from the church. Mm-hmm. So it really gave people an opportunity to get connected with someone who maybe they've never even spoken to a church before.

Like that's one of the things where as we've been growing and as we've been starting to see, starting to see like the three services and things like that, we have people that don't know each other and this was a great opportunity to get to know them. Yeah.

We're gonna, I think, do more stuff like that. Uh, it's unfair 'cause I meet people at the door, so like.

I'm not worried about, like, my wife was like, are you worried about who we're gonna sit with us? No, I've met everybody.

Yeah.

So, but then I realized, oh, that's, that's not how everybody else feels. Yeah. So, uh, who did you guys sit with coincidentally?

We sat with Matt and Lisa. Oh. Oh yeah, that's right. You guys were together.

Yeah. So

did you break it? Matt

did what?

Did you rake it?

No.

No. That's cool. Tell Randy who else was with you. Were you the gold box?

No. Aaron and Megan? No. Aaron and Megan were at a different table. Um, I'm trying to think. I was really sick that night, so I'm trying to remember who it was. Do you remember?

I can't remember their names.

I know their kids. Brett

and, yeah.

Yeah. Um, I don't remember her name, but their kids go to youth group with, yeah, with our kids. Yeah.

I'm trying to think who it was at your table. I'll remember it later.

Yeah. So will we, but, but. The food was awesome too. Oh yeah. The food was great. The food was good. We had candy, but barbecue was amazing.

It was, I tell people missed.

They missed an event. They did. They really did. They missed an event. You didn't come, you missed an event. It was affordable. It was cheap. It was just a fun event. Um, I'm looking forward to next year, but then it's hard 'cause I know it's like, Amy's like, how are we gonna top this?

Yeah. So, yeah, because it was so good. Yeah,

last year was fantastic. I love last year and I kind of felt that way this year, but then I was like, oh, this is, this is totally different, but, but equally awesome. Yeah. So I'm looking forward to it. This was my

first, so I thought it was great.

Yeah, I mean, I, it's always hard to try to top.

The year before. And I don't, that's not necessarily to be the goal, but it, you know, it is definitely fun. So if Amy, if you're listening, we're sorry you don't have to top this show. It was a really good, good job guys and the team that, that participated in that. So, and one of the things is we're gonna have more of these type of events because as we are getting bigger with two campuses, three services, or four services now between the two campuses, we're going to be five.

At both between the two campuses, it just, people are spread out. So we're gonna do more of these type of events that connect people, intentionally connect people. So you get to know people across campuses, across services. And so Christmas allows us to do stuff like that. But to be paying attention, you're gonna see Amy on stage more this year kind of promoting some other opportunities mm-hmm.

That they're working through and ideas to get people connected. And I think that's what we're trying to do. Make the big church feel smaller, um, so you can feel like it's home and know people. And so that hopefully that's what we're doing as a church and. As we get into Christmas season, it's, it can be a really good season for people.

It can really, a really tough season for people, and you need your church community. To be there and go through hard times together. I've got a funeral Monday. We got a, we got a, a wedding this Thursday. Almost said funeral this Friday. Friday this Friday. Said funeral mark's. Funeral, um, this Friday. Ooh, what?

But, uh, no. Um, but, uh, said the wrong thing. That's why the groom wears black. So, but, uh, so that's a celebration, right? His wedding. But then we have, I have a funeral on Monday, so it's a hard season for people to, to go through loss and at a time like this. So we just need to be there for each other and.

Support each other. Um,

and we do have a bunch of people this year where this is the first Christmas, like there's a lot of that. We've had a rough year with people passing and there's a lot of people where this is gonna be the first Christmas without

Yeah. And I think about as we get, as we've gotten bigger to church, we, we just have more people, which means that's more likely that people are gonna be having hard situations that go through throughout the year.

And so. We need to be more intentional about being there and, and making those connections and those relationships so we can help each other through the tough times and the good times. We can have fun and laugh and enjoy, um, you know, a celebration together, but we also need to make sure we make the phone calls.

We encourage people as they're struggling through the, through the season. So, yeah. Yeah. So if you know somebody who this is a hard season or has lost somebody this year, reach out. Just encourage 'em just for no other reason, just to see how they're doing. You know, that those phone calls, I've been on the receiving side of that when we lost our daughter, um, that first year, the holidays, people would call, just ask how we're doing.

And it, it meant a lot that they cared enough to ask. Um, it didn't really change how I felt, but it did mean something that people, people saw me in my. In my grief.

Yeah, there's a couple that I was speaking to on Tuesday where they had lost their daughter earlier this year, and you know, it's one of those things where it's not the every day for most people.

For most people, if you're just friends with the family and you don't necessarily know the person, you walk through it and you're like, you know, you're right there in the grief. In the very beginning. It's just human nature that you kind of forget as those firsts are coming up for those people at times and making it a priority to be able to say, I want to be the person who kinda reaches out in those moments, that means the world to people because.

People look at that and they're like, okay, cool. Somebody remembered that this is a big deal for me. This is something that is not a regular holiday season. And people care enough to reach out and, you know, touch base,

be like, I see that you're hurting and yeah. I care about you. Exactly like that. It's not all just a painful memory for them that they're seen and they're known.

Mm-hmm. And they're loved. Mm-hmm.

Yeah. So I mean, I, I think that's important. That's, that's the ministry that is ministry. It's a ministry of the body is caring for each other. And you know, we could talk about all these different great things at Christmas, but if we're not loving people as we're loving God, we, we miss the mark for Christmas.

I mean, it's not about gifts and not about money and singing. Christmas carols is about Christ. And, and being, and being selfless. A light of Christ for each other. Yeah. Being selfless. So I think that's the, that's the part we have to remember. People matter. At the holidays. That's what we're, that's supposed supposed to be about that type of people.

And you know, even in this Sunday, Cody was talking about, um, the angel coming to Joseph. Uh, and so we're, we're actually our series in Brooklyn for the holidays. Is is the angel sightings kind of in the story. Uh, so, and this week we'll be talking about the angel coming to see Mary, and then we'll talk about the angel the shepherds next week.

Um. We're talking about this kind of, those kind of miraculous moments that led up to Jesus coming. But I think for, for us, those, those kind of special moments that we have now is when we can be kind of those messengers of God's love to each other, uh, in a real intangible way, in a season of not only joy, but a season of grief, season of sorrow, and season of where comfort's needed.

So I think we can, we can show the light of Christ in a powerful way. And you know, that's what we're hoping, I think people get from the series, that we can not only obey God and, and which is a big part of the story of Mary and Joseph and their kinda sightings angels, but also we can, we can bring that light to each other through how we interact with each other.

So what are you hoping to see this Christmas season?

Uh, the biggest thing that we've been doing is we're doing a sermon series called Selfless. Where we have been encouraging people to make this Christmas season, not about the merchandise, but instead about the memories where you can take some time with a loved one, a friend, a colleague, a neighbor, whatever.

And you can do something real low cost together. Maybe it's you take 'em out for, you know, a cup of hot chocolate over at Big B and you know, you talk about Christmas, you talk about life. You just, you spend this time together. And I had actually created with help from Lisa and Melinda and Mark a Christmas calendar from, for the entire month of December where.

Each week is filled with different opportunities of things that you can do that are either no cost or low cost in an effort to be able to kind of give people some ideas. We've had people who have been borrowing DVDs from the church and went out and bought a bunch of Christmas movies, and each week there's at least one night where it's, you know, watch a Christmas movie together.

The biggest thing that I wanna see from people this year is being able to take that time. And recognize that even if you are financially strapped, even if you're looking at Christmas and saying, man, I don't know how I'm gonna do presents this year. I don't know how I'm gonna make this happen or that happen.

It's not about that stuff, and it doesn't have to be, but it's kind of what people seem to be pushing toward typically. So removing that selfish mentality out of it and putting that selfless idea in is the the goal that I've had That's good for this holiday season's.

That's good. Yep. We've been trying to do that intentionally at home.

We've been playing a board game every day. As a family. 'cause you know, it becomes about the business and we're, we are busy, like, we're all involved in different ministries of the church and my family. So we are finding time to play the games is really a tough thing to do. But we just decided this year we're gonna do something different.

We have all these board games. We, we needed to take time intentionally to enjoy each other. Mm-hmm. And so last night we played a game, took three hours to play a game called Vantage last night. It was fun and all five of us are doing it. Not all five of us equally. Enjoy board games. AKA poor Patty. Patty.

Yeah. But it's, we laugh, we have fun, we get along, we drink tea, that's the thing. And we're gonna do it for all 25 days, all the way through Christmas and you know, of, of December. And it's been, it's been a real, I mean we're day 10 now and it's been a really good 10 days. So we even played in New Orleans Nolins.

Um, so we. Carver and I took games to play. They played at home. We're gonna, you know, we, we have a whole thing. So we're, we have a score and then the winner gets to buy whatever board game they want. I'll buy board game for the winter. It's kind of our thing that, it's something else we can do as a family.

So we'll buy another family game that somebody picks out and then we'll play that as a family. So it's just, it's kind of getting back to the roots of like people, yeah. Christmas is supposed to be about Christ and people. We love God, love people. We've made it too much about commercial things and spending money and doing all these things and really.

Um, you know, we're getting together with Ryan and his family on and, and on Christmas day, which was kind of fun. So like, Hey, what are you doing on Christmas Day? Uh, nothing. So, uh, we're gonna get together, have, I think, prime rib and just hang out on Christmas evening. So it'd be fun. Yeah. But

now if you, if you don't follow Kyle as dad venture on.

Any of the socials you need to because he is documenting this Advent Christmas board game thing that they're doing, and it is positively hilarious. Like once you're done listening to the Hoddle cast, go and look up dad adventurer because it's really funny, especially on the games where Kyle loses so.

That's always fun to watch. I

have lost, I'm ti currently tied for first place. There's a three-way time.

But Kylie destroyed you in your favorite game. Carcassone Yes. Did too badly. Which really made me laugh so badly. Destroyed me. That's sad. Yes.

Yeah. I was proud of her though. Proud dad. Moment. Patty not doing so well.

Patty is not doing so well. Well, a

GLA is coming though. 'cause that's what that might be. That might be tonight. That's her favorite, right? Yeah, it might

be tonight. So that, that she has a chance. So she has a chance. So, yeah, no, we're, we are, we're very excited about it. So I would say you don't have to play every night, but do something fun as a family.

If you're a family listening, you know, try to take intentional time to do something that your family enjoys together, uh, and do it regularly over the next couple weeks. You know, maybe do it once a week. And just see or just have dinner together. That's a big thing. Like people aren't having dinner together anymore.

Yeah. That's statistics. So

make it about your presence and not the presence. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. I like it. Yeah.

Or his presence. Oh

yeah. That's a solid Jesus joke. Nice. That was a solid Jesus Duke.

Yeah. So, um. I close after that. Like that was like the stamp up. So, um, but no, go enjoy Christmas. Uh, we'll catch you next week. Uh, maybe we have to have Ryan back and talk about the sermon, so.

Yeah. Yeah, that'd be good. I think we should,

you can share, if you wanna hear the insights, go listen to Ryan preach.

We won't let you say everything you preach about 'cause then they won't go listen to you preaches tonight. But, we'll, we'll have Ryan back next week if he can. So

I think I can make that happen.

All right. Cool. Sweet. All right. Well, Merry Christmas. Happy holiday days and we'll catch you next week.
